Your USPTA San Diego Division Board would like to keep you updated on a few thing of note, both locally and nationally.

NATIONAL: 1. On January 24, 2019, the US Professional Tennis Association received “full accreditation” from the USTA. We are the only fully accredited tennis teaching association. As many of you know, we are aligning more closely with the USTA now. They (USTA) are the accrediting agency, we (USPTA) are the certifying arm. Standards will be set for teaching professionals and certification procedures. Stay tuned. 2. We have mandatory continuing education credits. 6 CREDITS EVERY 3 YEARS are required in order to keep your certification and on court liability insurance. You can get all the education credits necessary by attending you San Diego Division Convention. DIVISION: 1. The US Professional Tennis Association Executive Committee meets semi-annually to do the business of the USPTA. We are a democratic association. Your SD Division sends 2 executive representatives to these meeting. The April meeting is at USPTA National Headquarters in Lake Nona Florida, 1 block from the new USTA National Tennis Center. The September meeting is held in conjunction with the World Conference on Tennis. This year the World Conference is in Las Vegas September 23-27. I hope many of you will be able to attend this fun and educational event - close to home! 2. The San Diego Division will be holding its annual SD Division Convention and Awards Luncheon on March 2 & 3 at the beautiful La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Attending is a wonderful way to: - network with your fellow San Diego teaching professionals - receive the education credits you need - learn from our expert presenters, and improve your teaching skills. HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

U30 Report

Committees

by Amanda Fink Diversity Jamie Jones

U30 is an exciting new initiative from the USPTA to empower and create a community for up-and-coming teaching professionals. The San Diego USPTA U30 has built a community with the common themes to network and learn the professional skills it takes to grow on and off the court. We hope members will learn new skills and be open to different information to better their business. This group also aims to inspire pros to reach for directorships, board positions and other forms of tennis involvement that may not be directly “on court” related. We have had a great time meeting new people, interacting with interesting guests and contributing events/ speakers to the USPTA calendar. Last year we met with several USPTA and USTA National Board members as well as leaders of tennis businesses here in San Diego! We ran a junior/coach pro am that sold out and participated in a USPTA WTT doubles event as well as TennisFest. This year we are adding a High School/Coach Pro Am in January as well as providing a speaker or two for this year's USPTA San Diego Convention. We look forward to adding more great networking and educational events with the help and ideas from upcoming pros!

What is RacquetFit? By Marc Assaraf

RacquetFit is an educational organization dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in tennis and how to know if your body is impacting your tennis performance. Using data taken from studying athletes, RacquetFit discovered how a properly functioning body allows an athlete to successfully play tennis in the most efficient way possible. Additionally, RacquetFit has analyzed how physical limitations in an athlete’s body can adversely affect the mechanics involved in tennis strokes and potentially lead to injury. RacquetFit is transforming how coaches and athletes approach tennis instruction through an in-depth understanding of The Body-Tennis relationship. RacquetFit Philosophy “We don’t believe there is one way to play tennis. We believe there are an infinite number of ways to play the game. But we do believe that there is one efficient way for

everyone to hit their ground strokes and their serve and it is based on what they can physically do.” How will this impact your athlete? In keeping with Players Edge Tennis School’s outstanding accomplishments, we are proud of Coach Marc’s new certification. Coach Marc has adopted the philosophy that there is no cookbook of coaching techniques that applies identically to each player. We emphasize the development of life skills and educate our players to understand that the ideas and concepts learned on the tennis court apply to their lives outside tennis. We take a global approach by addressing the physiological, psychological, tactical, and technical skills each player needs to reach his/her full potential. RacquetFit adds immensely to our philosophy of not having a one-size-fits-all tennis program. Marc has more than 40 years of experience as an International Teacher and Coach. He has coached numerous players in the top 100 ATP, WTA, ITF and has served as national coach for Tennis Canada. Marc served as Director/ Founder of Players Edge Tennis Academy in Toronto, Canada from 2001 until 2008. In 2016 Marc started ASSARAF TENNIS CONSULTING in San Diego at the San Diego Jewish Academy and in 2018 he cofounded Player's Edge Tennis School in San Diego.

San Diego Junior Team Tennis Spring 2019 Conan Lorenzo Junior tennis is available in many forms here in San Diego. Kids are able to participate in their tennis club’s programs, take private lessons and compete in local USTA tournaments. Junior Team Tennis (JTT) is also another avenue that represents junior tennis in such a wonderful direction. The concept is simple. Allow juniors to feel part of a team while competing in tennis. It is what soccer, basketball, baseball, football and more have been doing for years with much success. A team consists of six players with two singles and two doubles where the total amount of games won in all four spots determines the winner. The team style of play is what keeps kids in the game while creating so many indelible memories.

JTT has two seasons of fall and winter, with each season lasting seven to nine weeks. Juniors of ages eight to 18 are placed in categories of 10U, 12U, 14U and 18U. Levels of play range from the beginner novice to the most advanced open tournament level. Local area clubs, include but are not limited to Carmel Valley, Rancho Penasquitos Tennis Center, Barnes Tennis Center, Coronado, East County, La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, Bay Club, Surf and Turf and many more. If you would like to get more information, contact Conan Lorenzo, San Diego Junior Team Tennis Area League Coordinator at clorenzo@ljbtc.com. You may also reference our JTT website at www.sandiegoteamtennis.com.

RPTC 18U that won Sectionals Conan is the Director of Tennis at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. He is a USTA High Performance Development Coach, Certified Sport Science Coach, Master Racket Technician, and a Certified USTA Umpire. He was two-time Washington State High School champion and a four year member of the Washington State University tennis team.
