ADP to the Rescue!

Tech-savvy Sailors on hand 24/7 to keep Big ‘E’ networking

ADP keeps Big ‘E’ Sailors connected, mission ready

USS ENTERPRISE, At sea – Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) count on today’s technologies to keep up with what is going on in the world and stay in touch with loved ones as they continue to support operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.

Many Sailors do not get to call home as much they would like to or have the time to watch news on TV, but thanks to the staff at the Automated Data Processing (ADP) office, they can still be in touch with worldly events by checking their shipspecific e-mail accounts and using Enterprise’s ship-wide local area network.

“ADP’s main goal is to provide critical support for our network and maintain the computers on board,” said Information System Technician (IT) 2nd Class Amanda L. Ward, an ADP help desk supervisor.

Twenty-four hours a day, ADP, a part of Combat Systems department’s CS-3 division, monitors the 12 servers that run the network, which consists of more than 5,000 users.

Help deck personnel are also available 24/7 to assist crew members with trouble calls.

really depend on e-mail, and it’s our job to keep it running smoothly,” said Information Systems Technician Seaman Dwan L. Metoyer, a system administrator.

ADP technicians also perform computer and server maintenance constantly to help keep the system running smoothly.

“We do preventive maintenance everyday to help keep the network from being bogged-down with documents that are no longer in use, outdated or are repeated,” said Metoyer.

By doing maintenance routinely, ITs help keep the ship’s morale up.

“I check my e-mail twice a day to stay in

touch with my friends and family back home,” said Hull Technician Fireman Rhonisha A. Jackson. “From my e-mail, the command can communicate what is going on, and I know what’s happening on the ship as well.”

ADP professionals play a crucial role in keeping Sailors connected to loved ones back home and to fellow Sailors throughout Enterprise to ensure important work-related items and information can be quickly sent and received on a moment’s notice.

“It’s vital and important for ADP to keep the ship’s network up at all costs because it is far

too detrimental to both the morale of the Sailors and the ship’s mission if we can not,” said Senior Chief Information Systems Technician (SW/ AW) Kentrick Sullivan, leading chief petty officer of CS-3 division.

Since Enterprise was designed in the late 1950s and commissioned long before the digital age, the entire system is an add-on.

Sailors in 1961 would not have believed that future Big ‘E’ Sailors would send a quick note home with the effort of a few minutes on a computer.

Thanks to ADP, the information gap is shorter than ever which makes all the difference in the world on deployment.
