All hands play a role in keeping Big E cool, clean

USS ENTERPRISE, at Sea - The thermometer keeps rising as the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) continues operations in the 5th Fleet area of responsibility, with many crew members feeling the heat aboard the ship. High temperatures mixed with the stresses of working aboard a forward-deployed aircraft carrier can have a potentially dangerous effect on the Sailors and Marines embarked on the ship if proper measures aren’t kept to help keep them as cool as possible. One group of Sailors from Enterprise’s filter cleaning shop is helping to combat this by ensuring filters are kept clean and in good condition. Clean filters play a huge role in helping to circulate greater amounts of air throughout the ship, which helps keep the ship cooler and Sailors healthier. “Human skin is what primarily makes up dust, and filters block the dust from entering a space,” said Damage Controlman 1st Class (SW) Jacob L. Flippo, Enterprise damage control’s leading petty officer. “By cleaning the filters regularly it allows clean air to flow freely and ultimately create a cooler work environment.” Preventive Maintenance System cards require filters
to be cleaned once every quarter, but that is not always enough since filters can become caked with dust quickly. Though the filter shop cleans the filters, all Sailors performing maintenance aboard Enterprise are still responsible for checking the air filters in their spaces and doing the proper maintenance associated with them. When maintenance is required on filters, the maintenance person is required to bring the maintenance requirement card and all of the materials required to do the maintenance with them to the filter shop, including personal protective equipment and materials from the ship’s hazardous materials shop, said Damage Controlman Fireman Adrian A. Miranda, a damage control petty officer. Once everything is gathered and ready to go to the filter shop, it takes no more than 15 minutes for up to five filters to get cleaned. Filter shop attendants run the filters through a large filter-washing machine similar to the dishwashing machines used in the ship’s sculleries. After the filters are dried, attendants spray the filters down with a special oil designed to help trap greater amounts of dust to prevent it from entering

the ship and Sailors’ respiratory systems. The number of filters the attendants clean varies on a daily basis, however they tend to be much busier when in the ship is in warmer weather. “Sometimes there is a long line, but I don’t mind staying later in order to get the job done,” said Miranda. “When the filter shop is operational it is required to take filters to the shop. You can’t clean them in your shop’s deep sink.” There are no shortcuts when it comes to keeping filters clean, which is ultimately the responsibility of all hands aboard Big E to
help keep the ship cool and its Sailors in good shape to support Enterprise’s mission. “It’s all about air flow. Keep the air flowing across the cooling coils in the most efficient manner and everyone benefits. Clogged filters result in less air flow and warmer space temperatures,” said Lt. Cmdr. Roger Somero, the ship’s auxiliary division officer. Enterprise’s filter cleaning shop is located at 01-64-2Q and is open daily from 1300-1400 to assist with your air filter cleaning needs.

Alex R. Forster - Wasilla, Alaska
Mario E. McCoy - Franklin, Louisiana
MC3 Forster, a photographer and photolab work center supervisor assigned to Enterprise’s Media department, joined the Navy for its college benefits and valuable work experience. To Forster, the most rewarding aspect of his job is “the chance to see and do things that most people don’t get a chance to do.” Forster aspires to go to college, start his own photography business and become a better person each day. Forster enjoys writing, playing music, taking photos and reading during his free time.
PSSA McCoy, a personnel clerk assigned to the “Checkmates” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 211, joined the Navy one year ago to further his education and travel the world. To McCoy, the most rewarding aspect of his job is “customer service because I enjoy helping others.” After his naval career, McCoy plans on working in the television and film industries. When McCoy has some spare time, he enjoys doing “anything that makes my day better.”
