VITA is a non-profit organization funded by the IRS to provide free tax consultation to military personnel who need it. The most common mistake Sailors make is trying to do their taxes without all the necessary paperwork on hand, Garland explained. “Don’t throw away anything important,” said Garland. “That’s what helps the most.” Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Equipment) Airman Jacob Blackmore, assigned to Enterprise, agreed with Garland on the importance of keeping records and added that those filing taxes online should keep conformation numbers given by websites as well. “Keeping records is
very important,” said Blackmore. “Take your time when you file your taxes, and start sooner rather than later.” After the tax return is filed by a VITA volunteer, Garland said Sailors can expect to see the results in their bank accounts within 10 days. When dealing with a VITA representative, the best thing to do is to be honest and answer all of the questions they ask, said Garland. “Since the program was set up by the IRS, every question your VITA representative asks you will be important to answer honestly,” said Garland. “Don’t be dishonest when you do your taxes. Uncle Sam will catch you eventually.”
