By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Gregory White
The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) is scheduled to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy Monday, Jan. 23rd at 6 p.m. The Big E’s Multicultural Heritage Committee is responsible for planning, preparing and organizing the event as well as other events observing cultural diversity throughout the year. “This month we are celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Judith L. Wesley, the ship’s independent duty corpsman and president of the Multicultural Heritage Committee. “It’s a day that we celebrate unity and
bring everybody together to make the world a better place,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Tamara M. Porter, a member of the Multicultural Heritage Committee. The committee has been working on planning this event for several months and held a meeting Friday to start finalizing the order of events for the celebration. “Our strike group commander, Admiral Carter, will come out to speak and commemorate the event, and the commanding officer will say a few words,” said Cmdr. Anthony S. Kelly, a member of the Multicultural Heritage Committee and the ship’s AIMD officer. “It’s great that our leaders will come out to help us recognize the man (King) and his dream.” Wesley said that a benediction will be
offered and that Enterprise’s Gospel Choir is scheduled to sing. She also said that Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech will be recited by a diverse group of people. “People are going to recite key parts of his famous “I Have a Dream” speech and reflect on all the great things he did for this country; not just for African Americans but for everybody,” said Porter. “He did so much to improve our knowledge and equality,” said Wesley. “He realized that life is not about race, but rather about knowledge.” The committee would also like to see some other talent at the celebration. They discussed possibly having instrumental performances, poetry readings, dramatic MLK continued on Page 3
