Enterprise Sailors Set to Remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

By Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Gregory White

The aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) is scheduled to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy Monday, Jan. 23rd at 6 p.m. The Big E’s Multicultural Heritage Committee is responsible for planning, preparing and organizing the event as well as other events observing cultural diversity throughout the year. “This month we are celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Judith L. Wesley, the ship’s independent duty corpsman and president of the Multicultural Heritage Committee. “It’s a day that we celebrate unity and

bring everybody together to make the world a better place,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Tamara M. Porter, a member of the Multicultural Heritage Committee. The committee has been working on planning this event for several months and held a meeting Friday to start finalizing the order of events for the celebration. “Our strike group commander, Admiral Carter, will come out to speak and commemorate the event, and the commanding officer will say a few words,” said Cmdr. Anthony S. Kelly, a member of the Multicultural Heritage Committee and the ship’s AIMD officer. “It’s great that our leaders will come out to help us recognize the man (King) and his dream.” Wesley said that a benediction will be

offered and that Enterprise’s Gospel Choir is scheduled to sing. She also said that Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech will be recited by a diverse group of people. “People are going to recite key parts of his famous “I Have a Dream” speech and reflect on all the great things he did for this country; not just for African Americans but for everybody,” said Porter. “He did so much to improve our knowledge and equality,” said Wesley. “He realized that life is not about race, but rather about knowledge.” The committee would also like to see some other talent at the celebration. They discussed possibly having instrumental performances, poetry readings, dramatic MLK continued on Page 3

U.S. To Withdraw About 7,000 Troops From Europe Navy Aircrew Assists By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

The United States plans to withdraw about 7,000 US troops of the 81,000 troops based in Europe, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. In an interview with the Armed Forces Press Service, Panetta said two brigade combat teams, or roughly 7,000 U.S. troops, would be withdrawn from Europe, but rotational units would still maintain strong military presence in the region. “The Secretary and other senior Department officials have consulted closely with our European allies on our new strategic guidance,” Pentagon spokesman George Little said in an email. “Our security commitments to Europe and to NATO are unwavering,” he added. The move is part of a 10-year defense strategy that President Barack Obama presented on January 5, giving strategic priority to the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. “We will continue to maintain our presence both in the Middle East and Asia,” Panetta said, according to the Armed Forces Press Service, an in-house Defense Department news service. “Yes, we’ll have the Navy and the Air Force, but in my experience, in any conflict you need to have the potential use of ground forces.” Each combat brigade consists of around 3,500 troops. According to Pentagon figures, there were 81,000 U.S. MLK continued acts or other forms of art presented by crewmembers at the event. Wesley said she would like to make this event as interesting as possible by not only looking at the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., but also the perspectives and thoughts of people today. “He was able to bring millions of people to Washington to hear him speak,” said Wesley. “That is a lot of power and a lot of stress for one man,

troops based in Europe as of late last year. Obama unveiled the new military strategy earlier this month for a leaner U.S. military focused on countering China’s rising power and signaling a shift away from large ground wars against insurgents. The plan calls for preparing for possible challenges from Iran and China, emphasizing air and naval power, while discounting future long-term, counter-insurgency campaigns like those conducted in Iraq and Afghanistan. The “defense strategic review” sets out an approach for the U.S. military in a looming era of austerity, as Obama’s administration prepares for $487 billion in defense cuts over the next 10 years. “Our budget is, basically, designed to reinforce the new missions we are talking about and that agile, deployable and ready force that has to move quickly,” Panetta said in the interview with Armed Forces Press Service. “The example I’ve used is if we are in a land war in Korea and Iran does something in the Strait of Hormuz -- to go after that and to deal with that threat is largely going to be the responsibility of the Air Force and Navy,” Panetta told the publication. Anticipating attacks from his Republican rivals in an election year, Obama said earlier this month that reductions would be limited and would not come at the expense of America’s military might.

but he took it around the world to make sure that everyone knew what his fight was for. It wasn’t for the importance of race. It was for the importance of everybody.” “I think it will be a great time to reflect on the struggles that he went through to make sure everyone has equal rights,” said Kelly. “I hope everyone gets the message that Martin Luther King had a dream and that dream became reality.”

NAPLES, Italy (NNS) -- An aircrew assigned to Patrol Squadron 47, operating from Naval Air Station Sigonella, Sicily, sprang into action to help rescue 68 people adrift on a powerless raft in the Mediterranean Sea, Jan. 15, more than 80 miles from the southwest coast of Malta. Responding to a request for assistance from Malta’s Rescue Coordination Center to search for a reported vessel in distress, crews made initial preparations and boarded their P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft for the mission, at approximately an hour before sunset, Jan. 14. Within an hour the Orion’s crew of eight was already on station, searching a 30 x 60 nautical mile area southwest of the island nation. Minutes after arriving, the crew spotted a drifting raft and contacted a civilian merchant vessel, the M/V Sunfish, to render assistance. M/V Sunfish found the raft was empty, while the U.S. Navy aircrew continued their search. Now, flying in the dark skies over the Mediterranean, the crew found another raft drifting in the open water. The rubber raft had 68 men, women, children of Somali origin, packed aboard the vessel with no shelter from the wind, water, or chilling temperatures. The VP-47 aircrew immediately deployed relief supplies of water, food, and flashlights to the stricken raft, and searched for other vessels in the area that could immediately render assistance. The Panamanian-flagged M/V Verona, over 60 miles away, responded and made its way toward the raft. Meanwhile, the P-3 crew remained in the area above the raft, reassuring its passengers that help was on the way. Finally, just before 1 a.m. today, the M/V Verona rendezvoused with the raft, taking all 68 passengers on board. Once all 68 passengers were safely on board the merchant vessel, and arrangements made to transfer the migrants to dry land, P-3 aircrew returned to their Sigonella air field, after an 11-hour mission.
