Warfare Qualifications - Your Road Map To Excellence USS Enterprise (CVN 65) Public Affairs
Initial enlisted warfare
qualifications are mandatory for all Sailors per NAVADMIN 268-10. Warfare programs are essential in ensuring our Sailors understand and are able to effectively engage a casualty, operate equipment or platforms safely and ensure backup as needed. Warfare qualifications are about ship, shipmate and self, and ensure the safety and safe operation of each command and platform on a daily basis. “It’s a standard every Sailor must achieve. The warfare device itself is a symbol that the Sailors who are wearing it have a basic level of knowledge to ensure they are capable of fighting the ship, saving a shipmate and ensuring the safety of themselves at all times,” said Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON), Rick D. West. “Having every Sailor at or working toward that level will only strengthen the war-fighting ability of that command and the Navy.” According to the NAVADMIN, qualification and/or requalification is mandatory for all enlisted Sailors assigned to
designated warfare qualifying commands. Q&A With MCPON:
Q: What happens if a Sailor doesn’t qualify in time? - West stated that failure to qualify in the specific warfare program within the command’s prescribed time requirements shall immediately result in a special performance evaluation that removes promotion recommendation, but the promotion recommendation may be restored with a special performance evaluation when qualification is achieved.

Q: Will a Sailor be penalized if their command doesn’t offer the opportunity for warfare qualification? - According to West, Sailors without the opportunity to qualify in a warfare specialty will not be penalized. However, Sailors should look for follow-on opportunities to obtain a warfare
Q: Will having mandatory qualifications water down the existing programs? - West stated, quite the contrary; by mandating warfare qualifications for all enlisted personnel, it will significantly “raise the bar” across the command regarding level of knowledge of the command and the systems our Sailors operate. It
is incumbent on those that wear the warfare pin of the command to ensure the integrity and strength of the existing programs. Q: How will Sailors stand-out amongst peers if everyone is required to have a warfare pin? - According to West, Sailors stand out every day. Performance and the Sailor’s overall command support should be the biggest factors to “break out” individuals. “I often highlight efficient manning and future platforms as examples of the need to ensuring our Sailors have a good, basic understanding of the systems and fighting capabilities of the command to which they are assigned,” said West.

Rebecca L. Tate- Granite Falls, WA
Adam Chilson- Ulster, PA
AM3 (AW) Tate, the tire and night check supervisor for Enterprise’s Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department, joined the Navy four years ago to “fulfill a dream of serving my country like my stepfather and grandfather.” Tate says the most rewarding aspect of her job is fixing aircraft parts so plane may complete the mission as safely as possible. In the future, Tate plans to complete her master’s degree in forensic anthropology and become an officer so she can “ help identify the fallen so they may be sent home to their families.” When she returns home, Tate plans to spend time with her daughter.
ATAN Chilson, a troubleshooter, final checker and technican for Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 136, joined the Navy three years ago to “ travel the world and protect my friends and loved ones.” Chilson says the most rewarding aspect of his job is “knowing the plane will safely fly” after he performs a final check. Chilson wants to retire from the Navy after a full and succesful career. When he returns from deployment, Chilson plans to scuba dive, skeet shoot, hunt, go to the beach and spend time with friends and family.

Matthew John Hopkins- Greeley, CO
Cody Gregg Whipple, Lawrenceville, PA
AO3 Hopkins, a magazine supervisor for Enterprise’s Weapons Department, joined the Navy 17 months ago for the economic benefits and financial security it provides. Hopkins says the most rewarding aspect of his job is knowing he helps put ordnance to use in the field of battle. Hopkins is working hard to earn his enlisted air warfare specialist pin and wants to become ever more knowledgable in his rate. When he returns from deployment, Hopkins wants to rock climb, play hockey, snowboard and “spend time with my son.”
AOAN Whipple, who works in laundry and the chief petty officer berthings for Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 11, joined the Navy one year ago to “follow in my grandfather’s footsteps, see the world and gain a better understanding of what’s out there.” Whipple says the most rewarding aspect of his job is helping “save the lives of the men and women fighting on the ground.” Whipple is working hard to become a third class petty officer and wants to begin work on building his own home. In his spare time, Whipple studies for advancement, works on his qualifications and goes to the gym.
