Enterprise students write Enterprise Sailors By MC2 Jymyaka J. Braden USS Enterprise Public Affairs
– The USS Enterprise (CVN 65) First Class Petty Officer’s Mess and Elite Junior Sailors Organization (EJSO) are distributing letters and art work from Enterprise Elementary School students in Enterprise, Fla. Enterprise Elementary students wrote to USS Enterprise Sailors, expressing their curiosity, enthusiasm and pride for the crew in a school-wide letter writing exercise. The letters are being distributed to crew members who want to write back to the students. Some of the classes asked about what kind tools are used on the ship, if there is electricity, how Sailors eat, sleep and where they work. Some students submitted Navy pride art work and drawings of ships, including a detailed depiction of the imaginative battle between SS Losers and the USS Enterprise. “One ten-year-old boy drew of picture of the SS Losers and their boat was on fire. The little stick people were in the water being eaten by sharks. It was adorable,”said Interior Communications Technician 1st Class (SW/AW) Jessica Douglas. The legendary Enterprise conquered the SS
Losers. While a lot of the depictions were funny some of them were emotional. The students thanked the crew for being brave and fighting for them. They asked if they Sailors missed their families and what ship life was like. “Day in and day out we do our jobs out here. We muster, lead Sailors, do maintenance, provide a service, clean or whatever we’re told to do. Not a lot of people stop and think about how our little tiny part contributes to the whole Navy,” Douglas said. “It is not till we hear the prayer, or when the captain speaks over the 1MC, or until we see a letter from a kid saying that you for keeping us free that we think about how important our little tiny job is.” Aviation Boatswain’s Mate [Handling] Airman (AW) Derek Jackson of V-3 division, who is a member of EJSO said reading the letters made him feel really good. “It means a lot that people that you don’t even know appreciate what you do,” Jackson said. “Kids wondering and caring about you while you’re out fighting for them makes me appreciate my job more. I will be sure to write back. I was a kid once and I know how easily they can be

disappointed.” The letters have been distributed by Douglas and EJSO President LS2 (SW/ AW) Martina Diggs. Sailors who want to participate should email or go see Douglas or Diggs to pick up a letter. Attach the response to the original letter and return it to Douglas or Diggs who will mail it on behalf of the Sailor. “The biggest thing we want to emphasize is to only
take a letter if you’re going to write back. We want every child to get a letter back,” Diggs said. “When we respond with letters and pictures, I think this will become one of their fondest childhood memories. It will be a story they will share with friends and family for years.” Enterprise Sailors and Enterprise students are building a legendary friendship through letters.

MM2 (SW) Feldpausch, an engineering leading technician for Enterprise’s Reactor Department, joined the Navy five and a half years ago to better his life and earn educational benefits. Feldpausch says the most rewarding aspect of his job is “training new shipmates and watching them mature into the next leaders.” Feldpausch plans to honorably serve his time in the Navy before finishing his college education. When he returns home, Feldpausch plans to watch sports and play golf.
LS2 Garcia, a material clerk for Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 211, joined the Navy three years ago to “get a head start on my career and have my school paid for.” Garcia says the most rewarding aspect of his job is “providing for my family while serving my country.” Garcia wants to earn a college degree and gain employment that will allow him to raise his children “to the highest standards.” When he returns from deployment, Garcia plans to play sports and spend time with his family.
