Navy Tradition of the Day

Chit “Chit” is a carry-over from the days when Hindu traders used slips of paper called “citthi” for money so they didn’t have to carry heavy bags of gold and silver. British Sailors shortened the word to “chit” and applied it to their mess vouchers.

Enterprise ‘Elite’ Sailor organization taking off during deployment By MCSN Jared M. King USS Enterprise Public Affairs

USS ENTERPRISE, Red Sea – For an elite group of Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) operating in the Red Sea March 10, performing above and beyond within their departments and divisions isn’t enough; they also strive to set personal examples for Sailors by representing the Navy’s core values ship-wide. The Elite Junior Sailor Organization (EJSO) is a group of Sailors handpicked by Enterprise’s chain of command, whose primary objective is to bring out the best in each Sailor aboard Big ‘E’. “This organization lets me to do work in a field I am passionate about (helping others) and allows me to become a better Sailor and leader,” said Information Systems Technician 2nd Class (SW/AW) Tamara Q. Mann, the EJSO president. “It makes me feel wonderful to know that I am a part of such a great organization that was formed by junior Sailors for junior Sailors.”

The EJSO grooms junior Sailors for the next step in their careers, including achieving warfare pins and making the next pay grade. They are also involved with shipboard and community activities, giving the Navy a positive image in the eyes of junior Sailors and community members. “I joined the EJSO to improve the morale of Sailors on Big ‘E’,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handling) Airman Desian M. Joseph. “I have collected canned goods and coats for the less fortunate in order to give communities a positive image of the Navy.”

In order to join this elite group of Sailors, there is a very strict process with high standards. This process includes routing a request chit through your chain of command to be approved by the command master chief (CMC). All prospective members must attend a screening board conducted by the EJSO board of advisors prior to the chit being approved by the CMC. All Sailors must include a copy of their most recent evaluation with the request chit. There can be no marks below 3.0 on their current evaluation. Any Sailor with a ‘must promote’ evaluation will need a written recommendation from an EJSO member in good standing with the organization. ‘Promotable’ Sailors are only considered on a

case-by-case basis. Applicants must have a minimum of six months aboard the ship, and they must be within height, weight and body fat standards, along with having passed their most recent physical fitness assessment. Finally, all applicants must have a clean military and civilian record for a minimum of one year and be up-to-date in all qualifications. While in port, EJSO Sailors focus on community relations projects and helping the elderly in an effort to give back to the community. Underway, they focus on boosting the crew’s morale and helping their shipmates by promoting wellness. “It brings joy to the members of the EJSO when we can successfully cater to the needs and wants of our peers enabling a better environment for all while out to sea and in port,” said Mann. EJSO also plays a major role in the warfare qualification program by holding training sessions within the group. Additionally, they offer pre-boards to anyone going up for their final qualification board. There are currently 95 Enterprise Sailors in the EJSO, but the organization is always looking for squared-away Sailors to apply.
