Naval Term of the Day
By-and-Large: This phrase has come to mean “generally speaking” or “under all conditions.” It is a term which was derived from the sailing terms “by the wind” (close-hauled) and “sailing large” (running free). The term “at large” also stems from that usage.

Father, son re-unite for duty aboard Big ‘E’ By MC3 Peter D. Melkus USS Enterprise Public Affairs
USS ENTERPRISE, At Sea - As the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) steams into its 67th day of deployment March 21, many young Big ‘E’ Sailors may have begun to find mother or father figures aboard the ship—senior Sailors they can look-up to for mentorship and advice. But for 19-year-old Masterat-Arms Seaman Recruit Caleb Donald, his at-sea father figure is, in fact, his own father. Donald, a member of Enterprise’s security force, reported aboard the carrier March 10, joining his father, Senior Chief Aviation Ordnanceman (AW) Damian R. Donald, the leading chief petty officer of Weapons department’s G-1 division, who has been stationed with the ship since last November. “Having my dad aboard the same ship definitely keeps me in check,” said Caleb. “I’m always doing what I’m supposed to be doing, but it feels good to know that if something goes wrong, I have someone I’m close with around to help point me in the right direction.” Enterprise is the first duty station for Caleb, a thirdgeneration Sailor whose grandfather served as a Chief Electronics Technician. Caleb joined the Navy seven months ago to carry on his family’s proud naval heritage and

to use his Master-at-Arms experience as a stepping stone to a post-naval career in law enforcement. As he neared the completion of his post-boot camp technical job training, or A-School, Caleb said he was excited to discover that Enterprise was one of the open billets available to his class. He immediately contacted his father and asked if it would be a good idea to complete Enterprise’s last tours together. “I couldn’t have been more proud or excited when I heard the news,” said Damian, a 23-year Navy veteran. “I didn’t try to persuade him at all [to choose Enterprise]. Caleb brought up the idea to me, and his timing was good. It’s definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Damian said he’s enjoyed playing the ‘dual role’ of both leader and father since his son’s arrival aboard Big ‘E.’ “I already have a division of 60 to 70 Sailors that I look after, and now Caleb is one more added to the list,” said Damian. Though he frequently gives his son career advice, Damian said that he barely had to help Caleb acclimate to life at sea aboard his first ship. “I like it out here,” said Caleb. “It’s not as much of a shock as I thought it would be - I must have that sea-gene in me.” “He’s been around me and hearing about being out to sea all his life, so he should be used to it,” said Damian. Since they work in different departments, the Donalds do not have many opportunities to work together, but that does not
stop them from meeting-up at least once a day to discuss their daily projects and even share a little study time, as they’re both working toward attaining their Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist pins. “It’s great to be able to get advice from someone who I know has my best interests at heart and personally wants to see me succeed,” said Caleb. “He’s been up through the ranks and really knows what he’s talking about.” This marks the first time a father and son duo have deployed together as part of ship’s company. “Our family has been really excited for us,” said Caleb, who has four brothers and one sister back home. “But I think my siblings are kind of envious since I’m still able to be close to dad out here.” Both Donalds will still be stationed aboard Enterprise when Damian is scheduled to be commissioned as Chief Warrant Officer in September 2012. At the end of the ceremony, Caleb will be the first to ceremoniously salute his father in the time-honored naval tradition. “I know he’s worked really hard to get to where he is today and I’m very proud of him,” said Caleb. “Not a lot of people get to say they have served with a family member, let alone their own father, and that’s something special that I’ll never forget.”
