Enterprise News Excessive H20 use not just “water under the bridge”

USS ENTERPRISE, At sea – As Sailors aboard USS Enterprise (CVN 65) accustom themselves to feeling at home in a vast ocean of water, conservation of potable water remains a priority to mission accomplishment, from launching aircraft to propelling the ship.

For Big ‘E’ to meet its mission, each Sailor must use fewer than 35 gallons of potable water per day, and that number has been climbing with the days underway.

Enterprise has five distillation plants that are capable of producing 70,000 gallons of potable water each day needed to replenish the reactors that power the ship, launch aircraft, maintain sanitation and satisfy Sailors’ personal water needs.

“Potable water is essential to ensuring that the ship is capable of fulfilling its mission,” said Lt. Cmdr.

Thomas J. Cooper, a main propulsion technical assistant aboard Enterprise.

Each time an aircraft is launched, the steamgenerated catapults use approximately 200 gallons of water. If 60 aircraft were to launch twice in one day, they would consume nearly 24,000 gallons of water— almost 15 percent of the ship’s entire water supply.

In the medical department, potable water provides for

sterilization of medical equipment and sanitation of medical ward bedding, vital to minimizing the spread of viral diseases and germs.

Then, there’s also the often overused and underappreciated use of potable water: taking showers, brushing teeth, washing laundry and conducting other personal daily tasks. These are the types of water use easily controlled by Sailors, and it’s becoming more important than ever to exercise efficient water use.

“Currently our distillation plants run virtually 24/7, which is rough on a nearly 50-year-old ship,” said

As deployment continues, reactor personnel must begin taking the distillation plants down for preventive and corrective maintenance.

Without active water conservation, stricter water regulations may be imposed to take stress off of the presently over-worked and aging water distillation plants.

“If everyone does their part to conserve, we could do this without the crew even knowing, but if people continue to use water the way we have been, that could lead us to enforce

water hours,” said Miller.

“I don’t know if you’ve ever been on a ship on water hours, but it’s not fun.”

Enterprise’s water distillation plants require that all crew members use a maximum of 35 gallons of water per person per day in order to adequately produce enough water to sustain all of the ship’s primary and secondary water functions.

Updated graphs showing Enterprise’s personal water use for the day are available to view on the Big ‘E’ Net so crew members can see how close (or far) they are to reaching Enterprise’s goal of 35 gallons used per person, per day.

If the distillation plants can hardly keep-up with producing these excessive amounts of water, the secondary functions, like hygienic use, laundry, etc., will have to be regulated, which will undoubtedly make living conditions lessthan-comfortable for the majority of the Big ‘E’ crew.

All Sailors can play their role in the mission of water conservation by turning off the faucet when brushing their teeth, securing the shower water when lathering up, and most importantly, reporting all leaks, no matter the size, as soon as they are discovered.

Each drop saved is one less drop that doesn’t have to be remade.

ABEAN Musa, a waist catapult crewman assigned to Air department’s V-2 division, joined the Navy three years ago to see the world and serve his country. To Musa, the most rewarding aspect of his job is “seeing the results of my hard work as the aircraft are safely launched off the catapults.” Musa aspires to one day start a family of his own while continuing his naval career. During his free time, Musa enjoys hitting the gym and studying for advancement.

AZ3 (AW) DeMaria, a squadron maintenance administration PO assigned to the “Checkmates” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 211, joined the Navy four years ago to serve his country. To DeMaria, the most rewarding aspect of his job is “doing my part for team Checkmate to ensure our maintenance department stays on track.” DeMaria is working hard to advance to E-5 and aspires to earn a bachelors in professional aeronautics from Embry Riddle University. DeMaria enjoys playing video games in his spare time.
