Keeping Big ‘E’ spot-on with spot checks
By MC3 Michael L. Croft USS Enterprise Public Affairs
USS ENTERPRISE, At sea – Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65), are coming up with new ways to make maintenance and spot checks fun and rewarding May 14, as they prepare for the upcoming Maintenance Material Management (3M) inspection next month. Big ‘E’s 3M office has started a Big E “top performer” competition that will challenge all maintenance personnel on board to do their best when spot checks are performed on maintenance they have done in the past. To qualify for the competition, the spot check must be conducted by a chief petty officer or above. Big E “Top Performer” will consist of four rounds, with the last round beginning June 17. “We started this competition to reward good spot checks and as an incentive to learn 3M and succeed in the 3M program,” said Lt. George V. Bodine, Enterprise’s 3M officer. “We don’t want maintenance people and spot checkers to become complacent when doing maintenance or spot checks. I believe this competition will help everyone do better.” Round one of the competition is currently in

full swing and the results will be available to the crew June 4. The top 20 percent of maintenance personnel will advance to round two. Round two will start June 5 and will run until June 12. For the second round of the “Top Performer” competition, all spot checks are required to be observed by a 3M training team member. Points will be tallied on June 12 and the top 48 maintenance personnel will advance to round three. Round three will start June 13 and will run until June 16. The same rules that were in effect for round 2 will be used for
round three. The top 12 maintenance personnel will advance to round four. Round four will test the maintenance person’s work center preventive maintenance system binders and their work center supervisor’s last 10 work candidates submitted. The binder audit and work candidate review score will be added to the maintenance person’s score. In the event of a tie, Bodine will give a level of knowledge question-andanswer test to determine the winner. The top 12 performers will get to choose from
different prizes to include a two-night stay in their own stateroom, a 96-hour liberty pass or a duty-free chit for one month. They will choose prizes based on the order they finish in the competition. “The maintenance that each and every Sailor conducts ensures the safety of everyone on board and keeps this fine warship at sea doing what she does best,” said Enterprise’s executive officer Capt. Greg Huffman. “This challenge allows Enterprise Sailors who maintain their equipment day in and day out to be recognized for their hard work.”
