Strike Group Sailors named Maintenance Persons of the Week

By MCSN Anna Wade USS Bulkeley Public Affairs

GULF OF ADEN (MAY 18, 2011) – Six Enterprise Carrier Strike Group Sailors have recently been recognized as “Maintenance Persons of the Week” (MPOW) by Commander Naval Surface Forces Atlantic (SURFLANT), May 23. Cryptological Technician (Maintenance) 3rd Class Dustin Carter, Cryptologic Technician (Maintenance) 1st Class Daniel Foote, and Fire Controlman 3rd Class Anibal RodriguezBerrocales aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Bulkeley (DDG 84), and Gas Turbine System Technician (Mechanical) 3rd Class Jacob Ansell, Fire Controlman 1st Class (SW) Darryl Smith, and Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Jeremy Minnifield aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) distinguished themselves as some of SURFLANT’s first MPOW winners. SURFLANT began the MPOW program to recognize Sailors who have distinguished themselves in the outstanding conduct of shipboard maintenance and contributions to materiel readiness. “Each piece of equipment aboard the ship contributes to the wellness of a system, and each system contributes to the war fighting capability and

survivability of our ships,” said Rear Adm. David Thomas, commander, SURFLANT. “It takes extraordinary effort, time, and resources to maintain our critical shipboard systems. Our Sailors are meeting that challenge head on—I appreciate your efforts, shipmates!” MPOW nominees show initiative and hard work in the execution of what may be considered routine maintenance. The nomination write-up includes description of the superbly-performed task and how it improved the overall combat readiness of the command. Petty Officer Carter, one of the recent winners, was chosen for MPOW for his perseverance in overcoming the hurdles

involved in repairing a prototype cryptological collection suite, dedicating himself to ensuring the full restoration of the antenna system capability. “This recognition speaks to not only the incredible talent onboard Bulkeley, but to the mindset of self-sufficiency and determination to fix things ourselves, especially impressive given the logistics challenge of remote deployment operations,” said Cmdr. Sean Anderson, commanding officer aboard Bulkeley. Aboard Leyte Gulf, Ansell led a team that removed and replaced a valve hydraulic pump, skillfully removing the old pump, and installing, connecting and

operationally testing the new pump in minimal time without jeopardizing safety. “GSM3 Ansell is a hard charger and hot runner,” said Senior Chief Gas Turbine System Technician Atley Vickers, leading chief petty officer of the Engineering department aboard Leyte Gulf. “He has done a lot more corrective and preventive maintenance than this one specific task and I think this program is a great way to get Sailors immediate recognition for performing corrective maintenance and keeping the ship battle ready.” The SURFLANT program began April 8 and recognizes six Sailors weekly from ships in the Atlantic fleet, deployed and in port.

FC3 Garcia, an advanced combat direction system technician for Enterprise’s Combat Systems Department, joined the Navy because family ties convinced him the Navy was a good choice. Garcia says the most rewarding aspect of his job is “knowing that I am doing it all for a bigger cause, and that I have family and friends who are proud of me back home.” Garcia aspires to become a commissioned officer and “live a financially stable life.” In his spare time, Garcia likes to hang out with everybody is his shop.

AM2 Noetzel, a flight deck troubleshooter for Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 11, joined the Navy nine years ago to “travel the world and provide for my family.” Noetzel says the most rewarding aspect of his job is “having a sense of accomplishment and seeing your hard work fly off the deck on a daily basis.” Noetzel aspires to advance to first class petty officer and continue his career in the Navy. When he returns from deployment, Noetzel plans to spend time with his wife and two boys.
