Deployed Enterprise Sailors get face-time with loved ones By MCSN Gregory A. Pickett II USS Enterprise Public Affairs

USS ENTERPRISE, At sea – Sailors and Marines are preparing to celebrate Mother ’s Day aboard the deployed aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CVN 65) tomorrow, with Big ‘E’ helping to make the holiday special by providing valuable resources to keep families connected. Enterprise’s Religious Ministries Department (RMD) is giving crew members the opportunity to keep in touch throughout the carrier ’s 21st deployment with its video teleconferencing (VTC) and United Through Reading (UTR) programs. VTC participants are afforded 20 minutes of digital face time with their loved ones back home from the other side of the world. “We dial up using the pointto-point system,” said Electronics Technician 3rd Class Oren Cockman, an Enterprise VTC coordinator. “It’s as easy as using Skype.” Every department aboard Enterprise has a VTC coordinator

to schedule available times in the evening. “We schedule conferences in the evening because more families back home will be able to participate,” said Aviation Ordnanceman Airmen Melquawn I. Alexander, a Learning Multimedia Resource Center supervisor. Each VTC takes place in the ship’s war room (03-1342-Q) and Alexander suggests that participants arrive 15 minutes prior to appointments in order to keep the schedule running smoothly and to prevent delays. “Keeping morale up is so important while on deployment

because it allows Sailors not to worry about home so much, which is why we offer these great programs like VTC and UTR,” said Religious Programs Specialist 1st Class (FMF) Gustavo Ortiz, leading petty officer of RMD. The UTR program allows Sailors to record themselves reading a book to their children. The DVD is sent home so children can see and hear their mom or dad while enjoying a good book. “I really like the program because it allows my kid to still remember me even when I get home

and they want me to read the same book,” said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Lantz R. Codopony, an advance combat direction systems technician. Through the UTR program, military personnel can continue to be teachers and role models to their children, or a special child in their life, throughout a time of separation. Thanks to programs like UTR and VTC, Enterprise’s RMD can further its mission of delivering innovative, life-transforming services to Big ‘E’ Sailors and provide some special moments to remember.
