dm. Bill Gortney retired aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) during a ceremony held on the ship’s flight deck, June 13. The ceremony marked the end of Gortney’s 39 years of military service. “I must open with a deep thank you to the crew of the USS George Washington and their captain,” said Gortney. “To be able to conduct this time-honored ceremony on the deck of a warship which I spent most of my career means so much, not just to me, but to my Navy family. Now I will miss my Navy, but I will miss you who man the Navy, most of all.” During his career Gortney amassed more than 5,360 mishap-free flight hours, completed 1,265 carrierarrested landings and led at various

levels of naval aviation throughout the Navy. Gortney served as commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, andalso commanded forces in the U.S. Central Command area of operations, providing support to Maritime Security Operations and combat operations for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. He most recently served as Commander, North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command. “I am honored to have served with the very best of the youth of America represented by the Sailors and Marines who surround us today and who represent all the Sailors, Marines, Soldiers, Airman, Coastguardsmen, and civilians I had the opportunity to work with.” said Gortney. “The retirement ceremony

is about us, the Navy, an honorable and noble profession. This is not my retirement, but a ceremony honoring the Navy, the professionalism and the families that make the Navy great, and I thank you for coming to this ceremony honoring all of us.” During the ceremony Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John M. Richardson awarded Sherry Gortney, wife of Adm. Bill Gortney with the Distinguished Public Service Award for service and support to military members and their families. “No one is supported alone, we are all supported by a strong team at sea and at home,” said Richardson. “Sherry, you too have made a life of public service. This is a celebration for all of us, but no one more than you. You have made a tremendous impact on our Sailors and our families.”

PRAXIS NAVY’S DEFENSE AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT INNOVATIVE RESPONSE AND PREVENTION

S

ailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) hosted the Pure-Praxis theater group for an innovative Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) training event in the ship’s hangar bay June 9. Pure Praxis’ goal is to instill cultural awareness of the dangers of sexual assault through proactive training. Their performances use audience participation and improvisational theater to practice creating safe solutions in difficult life situations. “Pure Praxis is a social theater group dedicated to cultural change,” said Benji Kaufman, Pure Praxis facilitator. “We have participatory, hands-on sexual

assault prevention training that focuses on retaliation and reprisal of survivors who have filed an unrestricted report.” The performance featured a scene in which a group of Sailors ostracized Tory, a victim of sexual assault, for filing an unrestricted report against one of the group’s male members. It depicted Tory as dejected and hurt, while her peer group expressed anger and betrayal by her actions. Audience members were then called upon to interpret the scene and discuss options for safe, healthy solutions. The piece illuminated important topics about how sensitive incidents can affect social groups. “The mission of the Navy can not move forward if people do not feel safe,”

said Damon Pratt, Resiliency Counselor aboard Washington. “Sexual assault is against the Navy’s values. We are a family we need to look out for each other. SAPR tries to educate and reinforcement these principles. We are trying to do everything we can to stay safe so that we can move forward and complete the mission before us.” “It’s very informative, it’s an important subject,” said Culinary Specialist Seaman Noah Barden. “It is teaching a lot of people to not believe in every stereotype they have about men and women. I think that the acting and interaction is a unique performance and they are using our Navy jargon, which makes it easier to believe that this could happen to us.”

L. Caslen, Jr, 59th superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy. Team Navy competed in sitting volleyball matches on the morning of June 15 to determine the bracket for the upcoming competition for gold on June 21, but were defeated. “We put up a good fight, but in the end just got outplayed; however, we never got shut out,” said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Shane Gilley. “All of our games were close.” Gilley credits Navy Wounded Warrior - Safe Harbor as a tremendous support system on his path to recovery.

“Being stationed away from any military treatment facility after my accident, things were really confusing for my caregivers since they’ve never been in the military,” continued Gilley. “NWW helped guide the way for them and introduced me to adaptive sports.” That evening, the opening ceremonies officially kicked off the 2016 DoD Warrior Games at U.S. Military Academy’s Shea Stadium. Thirty-seven seriously wounded, ill and injured Sailors are competing on behalf of Team Navy this year. The Warrior Games are being held June 15-22. Approximately 250 wounded warrior athletes are participating in the competition. NWW, which sponsors Team Navy, is the Navy and Coast Guard’s wounded warrior support program. Team members have upper-body and/or lower-body injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairments, serious illnesses and post-traumatic stress.

Three Nations Set Sail for Exercise Malabar 2016 By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Ryan J. Batchelder, John C. Stennis Strike Group Public Affairs

SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- Ships from the Indian navy, Japanese Maritime SelfDefense Force (JMSDF) and U.S. Navy departed U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo to conduct the at-sea phase of Exercise Malabar 2016, June 14. A trilateral maritime exercise, Malabar is designed to enhance dynamic cooperation between Indian navy, JMSDF and U.S. Navy in the Indo-Asia-Pacific. The exercise allows for practical training while exchanging skills and cultures, and helps to increase the understanding of multinational operations. “At its core, originally, Exercise Malabar was started [in 1992] as a bilateral exercise between the Indian navy and the U.S.,” said Capt. Jason Gilbert, U.S. naval attache to India. “The Japanese (JMSDF) became a permanent partner in 2015, and we are now starting to see the benefits of Malabar being a trilateral exercise.” Ships will spend the at-sea phase of Malabar in the Philippine Sea to advance the participating nations’ military-to-

military coordination and capacity to plan and execute tactical operations in a multinational environment. “It’s great to see the details and planning from the harbor phase [of Malabar] come to fruition at sea,” said Lt. Cmdr. Brent Jackson, executive officer, guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay (CG 53). “It’s amazing to see thousands of tons of steel come together on the water and operate as seamlessly as we had planned.” Malabar 2016 builds on progress made during previous exercises, improving participating nations’ abilities to conduct joint operations, and improve trilateral coordination and capacity. “We have a variety of exercises planned for the at-sea phase of Malabar,” said Gilbert. “We are doing the full spectrum of things that you can possibly do at sea in a short period of time. The more we can understand how each nation works

together translates into easier facilitation of operations in the future.” Areas of proficiency that will be exercised include surface events; visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) exercises; subject matter and professional exchanges; maritime patrol and reconnaissance scenarios; and antisubmarine warfare operations. “Mobile Bay is out here to be a strong partner in supporting our allies in the exercises’ upcoming operations,” said Jackson. “Both during the harbor phase, and now at sea, we are part of a much larger team and we look forward to executing our mission together as professionals.”
