USTA League Tennis is one of the most successful recreational sports programs in the country. Players can make friends and compete not only in matches against players with similar abilities, but also as part of a team. USTA Leagues has more than 20,000 participants in the Missouri Valley and includes more than 800,000 players from all across the nation, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. In addition to competing locally, you can vie for district, section and even national championships – just as long as your team keeps winning. Players range in age from 18 to 90 (and beyond), so there’s a team for you to play singles, doubles or mixed. USTA Flex Leagues packages all the thrills of organized league tennis into a fl xible schedule so everyone, regardless of time constraints and ability, can play. With Flex Leagues, it’s your call. Flex Leagues can be either singles or doubles, within NTRP ratings or by gender, ensuring fair and competitive matches. Go to ustafl x.com.
There are many adult and senior tournaments offered at the district and section level. These tournaments are for players of all levels and players can enter to compete in either singles or doubles. These tournaments match players by skill level or age and they are a great way to maintain or improve your tennis skills playing against new competitors who are on your level. Find a list of adult and senior tournaments in your area on TennisLink. The USTA Tennis on Campus program is a natural extension to a college or university’s physical education tennis classes, intramurals/extramurals program or recreational league. USTA Tennis on Campus programs offer students and faculty the chance to compete in a friendly and competitive playing environment. The playing format of USTA Tennis on Campus is designed to be fl xible, so that it will work on any campus and incorporate players of all ability levels and teams of all sizes. Beginning players may elect to concentrate more on skill building and the social aspects of tennis, while more advanced players might opt to form a sport club team and compete against nearby schools. Players who choose the more competitive route will have the opportunity to compete against Tennis on Campus teams from not only across the Missouri Valley section, but the country as well. This includes university hosted invitationals, the Missouri Valley Fall Invitational and Section Championship, and a National Championship event. This provides a great opportunity for players to compete against and form friendships with competitors from universities across the country. Visit tennisoncampus.com for a list of schools and details on how to start a team. There are three associations governing collegiate athletics: the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Each association sponsors a season-ending National Championship for its divisions. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. The ITA administers a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program. The goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching. Visit www.itatennis.com for more information on the ITA.

COMMUNITY TENNIS
YOUTH PROGRAMS 10 and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized courts and kid-sized equipment. With 10 and Under Tennis, balls bounce lower, don’t move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Racquets are sized for small hands while courts are smaller and easier to cover. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration. The new rules require that 10 and Under Tennis tournaments be played using slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls, on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter racquets, which is incorporated into the Missouri Valley’s “ROGY Player Pathway.” The ROGY Player Pathway promotes play in red, orange, and green ball events and is structured in a way that will allow young players to remain at the appropriate level until they are granted advancement by way of age, results, or participation. Players advancement is determined by the amount of participation credits they have earned, which are awarded for playing in tournaments and/or being on a Junior Team Tennis team. For more information, visit missourivalley.usta.com/Juniors/10_and_under_tennis. Junior Team Tennis offers girls and boys age 8 to 18 the opportunity to play on teams in local competitions that emphasize fun, fitness and friends Leagues match players of similar age and ability using the Junior National Tennis Rating Program (JNTRP). Teams play against each other in one of the following divisions based on age and skill level: • 8 & under: 10 and Under Tennis • 10 & under: 10 and Under Tennis • 12 & under - Eligible to advance to section championships • 14 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced Eligible to advance to section and national championships • 18 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced A league consists of a minimum of two teams in the same division, with at least three boys and three girls on each team. Visit USTA.com/Youth-Tennis/Team-Tennis/ for more information.

Junior Tournaments give players the opportunity to advance their game by competing in match play situations against peers with similar skill levels. Competing in junior tournaments will help players learn the skill sets necessary to take their game to the next level – high school, college or the pros. There are many play opportunities available at the district, section and national levels. Junior competition includes events for everyone- from first time ompetitors to top level tournaments for more experienced competitors. Tournament play offers many different formats that give you multiple opportunities to compete. The round robin, feed-in championships and team events are just a few of the many options. Find a junior tournament near you by using the junior tournament search feature on the USTA Missouri Valley homepage! USTA School Tennis is designed to introduce the sport to youth through PE classes and extracurricular activities. Children will learn the basics of tennis in PE class, then play games in Kids’ Tennis Clubs. The USTA Missouri Valley can provide free teacher workshops that demonstrate lessons from the USTA’s tennis curriculum which was developed for teachers with large numbers of students in schools without traditional tennis courts. Schools with USTA membership may access discounted equipment and grants for equipment or to initiate a Kids’ Tennis Club. Register your program on the school registry at USTA.com/Youth-Tennis/Schools/ SchoolsHome and receive the Kids’ Tennis Club Playbook plus additional items.

The NJTL mission is to reach out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play the sport, while instilling in these young people the values of leadership and academic excellence. Flex Leagues is an innovative program that allows you to play when and where you want. Scott Kirsch tells CrossCourt why it’s how he finds himself in the game.
As wheelchair tennis opportunities continue to improve, three organizations in the USTA Missouri Valley have received national grants to grow their programs in 20 5.

ON COURT WITH...
FLEX LEAGUES PLAYER SCOTT KIRSCH By Andrew Robinson
For some tennis players, their schedule doesn’t always accommodate time for USTA League matches or the ability to play a lot of organized tennis. But luckily the USTA’s Flex Leagues are specifically designed to help you fit tennis into your busy life. USTA Flex League matches allow individuals to schedule matches when and where it’s most convenient. The program is great for new and returning players, players new to town or even players wanting to meet other players in the area. Local options include singles, doubles, mixed and co-ed divisions. Players typically receive a six to eight match schedule to be played over a two-month season. For Scott Kirsch of Belton, Mo., he’s found a way to play several singles matches and meet new players without having to join a club. Kirsch spoke with CrossCourt about his experiences in USTA Flex Leagues. y I got bumped up to 4.0 at the end of 2008, didn’t know a whole lot of 4.0 players. It’s been long enough I don’t remember how I heard about it. But I’ve played every session since. It’s been enjoyable. W y Meeting new players has been the biggest benefit and obviously matching up well with players who have different styles. You also have their contact information so you can play anytime after that. A y I would just say extra matches and an opportunity to meet different people. Never been a member of a club. Not my scene, it’s a good, affordable way to meet new people rather than playing in clubs and meeting folks that way. v y I think so, since I’m not a club member, I mostly play in the warm months. Assuming that you have nice weather, you can pretty much get out there every week. USTA Flex Leagues has been a big part of where I get my singles matches in terms of keeping me active and improving my game.

Granting Each summer, competitors from around the country gather in St. Louis to compete in the US Open USTA Wheelchair Championships. In its 32nd year, it’s the world’s oldest wheelchair tennis tournament. Opportunities for competitive wheelchair tennis players have only increased in the last 10 to 15 years. With its deep history in the USTA Missouri Valley, wheelchair tennis is poised to continue to grow across the section and recent grants from the USTA for three organizations in the section will ensure that growth. Dwight Davis Memorial Tennis Center in St. Louis, Sportability of Iowa in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Wheelchair Sports Inc., of Wichita, Kan., were among those to receive grants in 2014. The grants received by the three organizations in the USTA Missouri Valley were part of $86,000 total in grants awarded by the USTA to 20 wheelchair tennis programs nationwide. Grants were awarded to local organizations that promote and develop the growth of wheelchair tennis and use the sport of tennis to build stronger, healthier communities. Since the inaugural grants in 2008, the total pool of USTA Wheelchair Tennis grant money has increased each year, with 2014 being the year with the largest amount granted to wheelchair programming by the USTA. In 1997, the USTA assumed responsibility for wheelchair tennis in America from the National Foundation for Wheelchair Tennis. Since then, the USTA has become the first governing body of both Olympic and Paralympic tennis governing Paralympics, ParaPan American Games and World Team Cup events. In 2005, the US Open became the third grand slam to host a wheelchair tournament alongside its main event. While there are plenty of opportunities for top players through USTA and ITF tournaments, facilities and organizations are working at the grassroots level to introduce the game to people who may not have otherwise known the opportunities that existed. Jess Batchelor, director of tennis development at Dwight Davis Tennis Center, has about 12-15 regular wheelchair players there and she is hoping to use the USTA grant to give all the athletes the opportunity to train in tennis once or twice a week in either private lessons or small groups.

“We want personalized training where they’re working with me, they’re conditioning, they’re working on personal toughness and doing it closely with coaches who genuinely want to get them further.” Dwight Davis hosts the US Open USTA Wheelchair Championships which helps provide awareness for the facility’s wheelchair programming. “It’s great to have Dwight Davis as a place for wheelchair tennis in the community because we’re able to give exposure to the sport,” Batchelor said. Some of the facility’s players drive as long as an hour to play, and Batchelor will use some of the USTA grant to increase outreach in the area. “We want to actually have sponsors,” she said. “That’s a huge goal.” At Wheelchair Sports Inc., in Wichita, Kan., the organization plans to host a two-day camp before a wheelchair tournament in June. Grady Landrum, president of Wheelchair Sports, said tennis has been a main focus for the organization since it was founded nearly 20 years ago. “It’s really my one sport passion,” Landrum said. “I’ve played for over 30 years now. Landrum expects participants from all over the country to attend its wheelchair tennis camp and subsequent tournament. “What we try to do with the camp is keep it as inexpensive as possible,” he said. Sportability of Iowa, which also received a grant, was founded in 2010 with the goal of providing recreational and competitive level athletic activities to people across eastern Iowa with physical disabilities and visual impairments. While the organization supports a number of sports, Barrett said it was interested in tennis because of the inclusion. “It is really huge for our organization,” Barrett said. “Inclusion is something we really believe in.” #playmovalley

By Andrew Robinson
With the grant money, Sportability will be launching a weekly tennis program that it hopes will be self-sustaining in the Cedar Rapids area. “All the equipment is on site and anyone can take part in it,” he said. “Hopefully, after that grows, we would like to have a yearly tennis tournament which gives those folks the opportunity to move to the next competitive level.”
“Inclusion is something we really believe in.”
Last fall, Sportability had about seven regular participants in its tennis programming, and Barrett is hopeful that number can reach 15 this year. But right now, he’s thankful for the support he’s getting from the USTA.
“We’ve never had the support we’ve gotten from the USTA from another sport’s governing body.” In addition to the US Open USTA Wheelchair Championships, at least two other wheelchair tournaments will be held in the USTA Missouri Valley this year. In April, Wheel it Forward, which works to provide a quality wheelchair tennis experience in adaptive sports for people with disabilities, will host its first Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament April 10 through 12 at Northland Racquet Club in North Kansas City, Mo. The event will be sanctioned by the USTA Heart of America and open to all USTA wheelchair players. August 7-9, the Capital City Wheelchair Tennis Classic will be held at Woods Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb.
RATZLAFF BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL PLAYER Casey Ratzlaff is among the rising stars in junior wheelchair tennis tournaments. The Wichita, Kan., native completed a successful 2014 with several accomplishments. Ratzlaff joined forces with Conner Stroud of Spindale, N.C. to win the Junior Open/A Doubles title at the PTR Wheelchair Championships in Hilton Head, S.C. The pair defeated Canadian Tomas Bourassa and Korean Im Ho Won. Ratzlaff also won the Junior Open/A Singles Consolation bracket by defeating no. 1 seed Auburn Smith 6-1, 6-2. Ratzlaff and Stroud also finished fourth after upsetting the top junior team in the world from the Netherlands in round-robin play in the 2014 BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Alphen, Netherlands. The juniors finished fifth in 2013.

USTA LAUNCHES WHEELCHAIR TENNIS APP The USTA recently launched a new mobile app for wheelchair tennis participants. The app titled “Wheelchair Tennis Community” is available through web access, for iPhone and for Android. The app is designed to be a social hub for not only players, but tennis coaches, organizers, family members and fans, either disabled or able-bodied. Upon joining, community members are encouraged to share their stories, photos and videos, and can find where and when local wheelchair tennis events are happening. Some of the Wheelchair Tennis Community app’s features include: • A global activity feed, which is a quick way to share photos, comments, and check-in to see where wheelchair tennis is being played. • “Coaches’ Corner,” a tab where community members learn performance and health tips from many of the top wheelchair tennis coaches on the planet. • Surveying, where wheelchair tennis community members are invited and encouraged to provide feedback concerning the pertinent issues of the day. • Community spotlights, where select community members are spotlighted and fellow members can read about their backgrounds and see how they’re succeeding in making tennis a more inclusive sport. missourivalley.usta.com

40 DAYS OF NONVIOLENCE FOLLOW-UP:
40 Days of Non Violence campaign returns to East St. Louis; community receives grant to refurbish courts
USTA St. Louis introduced tennis to approximately 300 children ages 8-18 as part of the 40 Days of Non-Violence campaign in East St. Louis, Illinois this winter. Local members of the USTA organized six Saturday sessions in the gym at the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation through February to introduce tennis to area youth. “Breaking the Barriers: The ATA and Black Tennis Pioneers” from the International Tennis Hall of Fame was once again on display at East St. Louis City Hall for the duration of the 40 Days of Non-Violence campaign. As a result of last year’s tennis sessions during the 40 Days of Non-Violence, plans are in place to renovate the tennis courts at Lincoln Park and introduce tennis in East St. Louis Public Schools’ physical education programs. The park renovations are being supported by a grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. With the $237,000 grant provided by the State of Illinois, East St. Louis will have four courts re-furbished and the opportunity to play tennis on quality courts will once again be provided to the community where Jimmy Connors learned to play the game. The 40 Days of Non-Violence campaign is a faith-based and community-driven initiative, whose purpose is to deter and ultimately eliminate violence through education, awareness and job creation. The annual event provides violence-free activities and valuable information, resources and opportunities in the hopes that the community will continue the efforts after the event itself.
SPOTLIGHT ON:
OFFICIALS
Verne Weber has been a USTA official for the last 25 years, and is currently the chairman of officials in the USTA Missouri Valley. While the section has over 100 active officials, it is constantly looking to boost that number. Weber recently spoke with CrossCourt about the opportunities officiating provides and why it’s such a great way to give back to the game. e The standard ones are the cameraderies of working with other officials, a chance to give back to the game and do community service. They’re closely involved in the game itself if they have a passion for tennis. It gives them a chance to stay involved.” “There is some discussion within the USTA at the national level about putting a greater emphasis on sportsmanship with the players, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need umpires. Players will still have questions, they will still have scoring disputes, there will still be parents and kids who act up. So we certainly still need umpires in order to hold tournaments. d There are actually several routes. Everyone starts out as a roving official at local matches. You can go into collegiate umpiring or professional umpiring. Most officials have to start as a line official in pro events and they would start in lower level future events like the USTA Missouri Valley has and keep working their way up. A few officials who got to work the US Open had worked smaller USTA Pro Circuit events and then got to work the big event. Obviously, you have to have good vision, attention to detail and focus. A lot of it is having a good personality. You need to be able to step in and resolve issues and on the other hand we don’t want people who are overly aggressive, it takes some diplomacy, a lot of good skills. It takes constant self study of the rules to make sure you know what you’re doing. y v The best way to improve is to work and to get out and practice on the court. Also, work with a mentor. Find a mentor who can help them improve through working and studying and seeking more events such as Challenger events. Y
e y I think just working locally and watching the junior players develop and working with new umpires to get them started. A couple of years USTA Nebraska had the NCAA runner-up in Mary Weatherholt. It was always great umpiring her matches.” If you are interested in becoming an official, visit missourivalley.usta.com/Officials/officials/.

Dan Matheson, a sports management and marketing lecturer at the University of Iowa, is assisting USTA Iowa with the recruitment and retention of tennis officials. In a undergraduate sports marketing course consisting largely of juniors and seniors, teams within the class will work during the spring semester toward developing a marketing campaign with the hopes of increasing the number of tennis officials. In early February, longtime USTA Missouri Valley official Donna Farley spoke with the class about the challenges of attracting and keeping tennis officials. Now, students are working on their campaigns and pitches until mid-April, at which time Farley will return to the class to hear the students’ ideas. Farley will then select one or two plans and see how they could possibly be implemented or developed into a new strategy for USTA Iowa. “In the meantime, they’ll be doing research and we’ll be continuing to progress in sports marketing,” Matheson said. “It’s a terrific opportunity to implement what they’re learning in class.” While not all the students were familiar with tennis or its officiating programs, Matheson was still pleased with the amount of interest from his class. “I was excited to see the level of enthusiasm with the students,” he said.

The Five Events You Must Have on Your Calendar in 2015 There are hundreds of events in the USTA Missouri Valley each year, whether it be Tennis Play Days, junior tournaments or adult leagues. But some events can carry more weight than others, provide more drama or be a venue for some of the best players in the world. We’ve narrowed down this year’s event calendar to fi e events you shouldn’t miss in the USTA Missouri Valley in 2015. Chance to see Champions: Let’s start with the Champions Cup presented by Woods Park Tennis as part of the Powershares Series. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on April 1 at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb. It will serve as a homecoming of sorts for Omaha, Neb.-native Andy Roddick. Roddick will be joined at the event by James Blake, Jim Courier and John McEnroe. Two one-set singles matches will be played with the winners advancing to play a one-set championship match later that evening. Tickets remain available and can be purchased at www.powersharesseries.com. USTA members receive a 10% discount with the promocode “USTA10”
Gold Ball Events: For amateur players, the most prestigious award is a USTA Gold Ball, and two events in the USTA Missouri Valley offer them. First, the USTA National Husband Wife Mixed Hard Court Championship takes place May 1-3 in Kansas City, Mo., and a trip to the US Open will be on the line during the US Open National Playoffs in Prairie Village, Kan. May 28-30. That event is open to any US Open member, and the winners advance to the US Open National Playoff Championships at Yale, with the winner of that tournament receiving a bid into the US Open qualifying tournament. The USTA National Women’s 65,75,85 Indoor Championships is June 22-28 in Overland Park, Kan.
The Sweetest in the Section: The Summer Sweet 16 tournament on June 16-21 offers a glimpse of the best in American tennis. The top 16 boys and girls players in the USTA Missouri Valley in four age divisions compete for a chance to play in the USTA National Championships. You never know when you could see a future grand slam champion at Sweet 16. Defending Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Doubles champion Jack Sock won the event in 2009.
Springfield Lasers As the summer hard court season heats up in July before the U.S. Open, World Team Tennis makes its annual stop in Springfield Mo., home of the Springfield asers. The Lasers, which won the Western Conference Championship in 2013 and 2014, will welcome a number of other high profile pla ers throughout the season. Andy Roddick, Martina Hingis, Martina Navratrilova, Lindsay Davenport, John McEnroe, Jimmy Conors and Anna Kournikova have all stopped in Springfield This year marks the Lasers’ 20th annniversary. Season tickets are on sale now and can be purcahsed by visiting springfieldlasers. om. The season runs July 12 through August 2.
US Open USTA Wheelchair Championships: One of the beautiful things about tennis is it’s truly a sport for anyone. Nowhere is that more evident in the USTA Missouri Valley than the US Open USTA Wheelchair Championships held September 1-6 in St. Louis. This year’s tournament will be the 32nd edition of the world’s oldest wheelchair tennis tournament and is held in conjunction with the USTA and the Gateway Confluen e Wheelchair Sports Foundation in St. Louis.

Net Notes Two Tulsa tennis players finished their 2014 season well, winning their respective divisions and earning a coveted USTA Gold Ball at the USTA National Winter Championships in Phoenix, Ariz. in December. William Genesen won the Boys’ 18s division, dropping just two sets in seven matches on his way to the title. The USTA National Winter Championships was the sixth tournament Genesen won in 2014. Morgan Coppoc won the Girls’ 16s division, dropping just three sets in seven matches. Coppoc also finished her 2014 season winning six USTA tournaments.

Two new representatives have joined the USTA Missouri Valley Executive Committee. Chris Carey from USTA Heart of America comes on as a vice president, while Lisa Minihan from USTA Oklahoma is the new treasurer. Scott Hanover wrapped up his four-year term as board president, making room for Stuart Dusenberry from USTA Iowa to take over the gavel. Hanover is now serving as the section delegate in addition to immediate past president. Rounding out the 2015-16 Executive Committee are Larry Haugness (First Vice President), Alex Lee (Vice President) and Susan True (Secretary). The USTA Missouri Valley thanks departing members Kim Reser, Shelley George and Barbara Fackel for their service to the section.

2015 DISTRICT JUNIOR RULES SINGLES/DOUBLES: The USTA Missouri Valley’s Missouri district encourages junior players to use the following guidelines in order to receive an annual singles and an annual doubles district ranking (determined by the TennisLink Ranking System). 1. Missouri District events with four or fewer participants will use a round robin format. 2. Be domiciled within the USTA Missouri district. 3. Hold a current USTA membership. 4. Must enter the age division for which player wants to be ranked. You are eligible to play in your age division until the month you age up (your birthday month).
5. To receive a USTA Missouri District ranking, a player must play at least one USTA Missouri District sanctioned tournaments. This would also include sanctioned one day events. 6. If a player plays more than fi e USTA Missouri District sanctioned tournaments, the player’s best fi e tournaments will be used to determine their ranking. 7. Player will be penalized if he or she withdraws from a tournament after the draw has been made, for any reason, except illness, injury, or death in family. The USTA Missouri Valley Section Suspension Point System will be in effect at sanctioned tournaments.
10. Doubles points will be counted as 15% of the Combined Ranking. The USTA Missouri District will be hosting all four of these Designated events with three of these also serving as our Endorsement tournaments and named a MO Futures Qualifie . The winner of each one of these Futures Qualifiers will get a automatic entry into two Futures. 2015 USTA MISSOURI DISTRICT DESIGNATED EVENTS April 17-18, 2015 MO BG 12-14 District Championship Joplin, MO MO BG 16-18 District Championship - Springfield MO June 26-27, 2015 MO BG 12-18 District Designated Championship - Columbia, MO
DISTRICTS
For example: If you are twelve years old and have a birthday in June, you must play in the 14s Division entering any tournament in the month of June. You may elect to play in an older age division before you are required to.
9. The 2015 Junior Schedule refl cts the philosophy of the USTA Player Development division, to have a more fair, easier, efficient and more conomical system for US tournament juniors. This new system will force players to play more locally as opposed to paying for points by traveling around the country. It is also designed to present a truer ranking for players. Each district is allowed four “Designated” tournaments for more points than a local event. These tournaments are closed to non-district players. All of these events qualify for Missouri Valley Level 4 points. Singles play in all these tournaments shall be the best of three sets with a 10 point tiebreak in lieu of the third set.
August 21-22, 2015 MO B 16-18 District Designated Championship - Springfield MO November 20-21, 2015 MO BG 12-14 District Championship - Joplin, M MO BG 16-18 District Designated Championship - Springfield MO
8. The 2015 USTA Missouri Valley Rules and Regulations as well as the 2015 Rules and Regulations set forth in the Friend at Court will apply.
