INFORMATION

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR As we begin 2016, we remain focused on our Youth Imperative. We continue to promote tennis to our 10 and Under Tennis players using the Red, Orange and Green balls. This year we have introduced our Youth Progression system of tracking participation for 7-10 year old players from Orange to Green to “Mission Accomplished”. Young players will track their progression on their specially designed player page. Stars indicate participation and Trophies indicate winners and finalists. It’s a great way to keep the player engaged while promoting fun and participation as they develop their skills to progress towards the Yellow ball. Our biggest challenge is to tie all events together…Play Days, team tennis and tournaments so our players have choices on how they develop their passion for the sport. There is no ONE pathway but an opportunity for a player to choose what best fits them! You will see an emphasis this year on family play. While many of us know this is a sport for life, those trying our sport for the first time need to know that we welcome all ages and the entire family to participate. It’s all about the play experience, making it easy and flexible for all. Find a Play Day near you to begin your experience for life! We will continue to offer non-traditional events to fit the needs of today. You should see more one day events, shorter scoring formats, and 60’ court events for adults as we strive to “reimagine American tennis.” We want to bring back those former high school and collegiate players and create a community that provides fitness, is family friendly and promotes a healthy lifestyle. We want to reignite the passion! It takes a village of wonderful partnerships with our tennis professionals, our facilities, our Community Tennis Associations, our schools, our NJTL chapters and our districts to create a tennis community. We appreciate the continued support of each of our partners as we continue to grow. Please consider being a part of our team to guide us forward. We are always in need of volunteers, both in the leadership capacity as well as assisting with events. We can not stand still for a moment but must continually move forward and adjust to keep our sport relevant.

Let’s make some noise….

Let’s raise a racquet!

2015 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

In 2016, the USTA Missouri Valley will strive to continue to inspire and attract youth to tennis, and continue to reimagine American tennis by strengthening adult programming, rallying families, and growing a diverse and inclusive community.

INFORMATION

More than 200 people attended the USTA Missouri Valley Annual Conference December 4-5 at the Sheraton Hotel in Overland Park, Kan. The conference’s theme, “Find Your Place” set the tone for the weekend as speakers and workshops focused on engaging with volunteers, providers and players to find their place in the game whether it be as a player, volunteer, official, educator, or coach and continue to promote and develop the growth of tennis in the USTA Missouri Valley.

The opening session featured Michael McNulty, member of the USTA board of directors. McNulty spoke about the USTA’s top priorities, improvements to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, as well as an update on the new USTA National in Lake Nona, Florida. On Dec. 4, Bill Leong, Director of Diversity and Inclusion for the USTA, led participants in a session titled “Teamwork and Innovation through Cross Cultural Dexterity.” The session’s goal was to create awareness to recognize and develop skills for effectively responding to cultural differences. The USTA Missouri Valley honored its 2015 Hall of Fame class during a luncheon on Dec. 5. Inducted were the late Richard Hudlin (St. Louis, Mo.), Cornelia Salmon-Robertson (LeCompton, Kan.), Mark Rosewell (Maryville, Mo.), and Verne Weber (Bellevue, Neb.) The four new members of the USTA Missouri Valley Hall of Fame bring the total number of members to 120. See Page 12 for a full list of Hall of Fame members. Also honored Dec. 5 were more than 20 Missouri Valley award winners and 10 junior sportsmanship winners. See Pages 10 and 11 for the full list. The conference also included an Adult League Coordinator Training and Junior Team Tennis Training. Friday evening, an adult play day and dinner was hosted at Genesis Health Club - Overland Park. The 2016 USTA Missouri Valley Annual Conference will be held December 2-3, also at the Sheraton Hotel in Overland Park, Kansas.

Attendees Connie Robertson and Daniel Wellington discuss tennis in their communities.

Jane Hines and Kara Heim share a laugh during a break in the conference action.

COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE

COMMUNITY TENNIS

YOUTH TENNIS 10 and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized courts and kid-sized equipment. With 10 and Under Tennis, balls bounce lower, don’t move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Racquets are sized for small hands while courts are smaller and easier to cover. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration. The rules require that 10 and Under Tennis tournaments be played using slowermoving and lower-bouncing balls, on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter racquets, which is incorporated into the Missouri Valley’s “Youth Progression Player Pathway.” The Youth Progression Player Pathway promotes play in red, orange, and green ball events and is structured in a way that will allow young players to remain at the appropriate level until they are granted advancement by way of age, results, or participation. Player’s advancement in orange and green ball is determined by the amount of stars and trophies they have earned, which are awarded for playing in Youth Progression tournaments, being on a Junior Team Tennis team and/or participation in Youth Progression Play Days. missourivalley.usta.com/Juniors/10_and_under_tennis Play Days let kids experience the thrill of competition without the pressure. Kids are introduced to competition in a low-pressure setting where the emphasis is on FUN. Play Days allow kids to gain matchplay experience with others of similar age and skill so they can transition to team tennis and tournaments. Play Days typically last two to three hours, and kids get to play multiple matches in a non-elimination setting—all with the goal of enhancing skills and making friends in a fun, social atmosphere. For both novices and experienced players, Play Days are a welcoming way for kids to experience the social and competitive aspects of tennis. youthtennis.com Junior Team Tennis offers girls and boys age 8 to 18 the opportunity to play on teams in local competitions that emphasize fun, fitness and friends. Leagues match players of similar age and ability using the Junior National Tennis Rating Program (JNTRP). Teams play against each other in one of the following divisions based on age and skill level: • 8 & under: 10 and Under Tennis • 10 & under: 10 and Under Tennis • 12 & under - Eligible to advance to section championships • 14 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced - Eligible to advance to section & national championships • 18 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced - Eligible to advance to section & national championships A league consists of a minimum of two teams in the same division, with at least three boys and three girls on each team. USTA.com/Youth-Tennis/Team-Tennis Junior Tournaments give players the opportunity to advance their game by competing in match play situations against peers with similar skill levels. Competing in junior tournaments will help players learn the skill sets necessary to take their game to the next level – high school, college or the pros. There are many play opportunities available at the district, section and national levels. COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE

ADULT TENNIS Varsity collegiate tennis in the United States provides opportunities for thousands of players to continue their tennis careers while also earning a college degree. There are three associations governing collegiate athletics: the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Each association sponsors a seasonending National Championship for its divisions. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. The ITA administers a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program. The goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching. itatennis.com

COMMUNITY TENNIS

The USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) is a nation-wide network of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. The NJTL mission is to reach out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play the sport, while instilling in these young people the values of leadership and academic excellence. The program gives all kids (regardless of income, race, or gender) the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so that they can derive a life time of enjoyment from the sport. The NJTL program is a great way for kids to get exercise, make friends, and have fun in a, team-oriented, safe environment. NJTL offers a variety of on and off-court programming, emphasizing educational and life-skill components to enhance overall development. This curriculum is offered at little or no cost to the participant. NJTL chapters are divided into differen’t levels, within the USTA, based on size and programming the chapter is able to provide.

The USTA Tennis on Campus program is a natural extension to a college or university’s physical education tennis classes, intramurals/extramurals program or recreational league. USTA Tennis on Campus programs offer students and faculty the chance to compete in a friendly and competitive playing environment. The playing format of USTA Tennis on Campus is designed to be flexible, so that it will work on any campus and incorporate players of all ability levels and teams of all sizes. Beginning players may elect to concentrate more on skill building and the social aspects of tennis, while more advanced players might opt to form a sport club team and compete against nearby schools. Players who choose the more competitive route will have the opportunity to compete against Tennis on Campus teams from not only across the Missouri Valley section, but the country as well. This includes university hosted invitationals, the Missouri Valley Fall Invitational and Section Championship, and a National Championship event. This provides a great opportunity for players to compete against and form friendships with competitors from universities across the country. tennisoncampus.com

professional TENNIS The USTA Pro Circuit was formed in 1979 to provide players with an opportunity to gain the professional ranking points needed to compete on the major pro tours. With approximately 90 tournaments hosted annually throughout the country, and prize money ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, it is the pathway to the US Open and tour-level competition for aspiring professional tennis players, and a frequent battleground for established professionals. In 2016, the USTA Pro Circuit will have four stops in Missouri Valley. The USTA Pro Circuit has launched the careers of such current stars as John Isner, Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova and Caroline Wozniacki. The past few years have seen breakout performances by a number of USTA Pro Circuit players, including Sloane Stephens, Jack Sock and Madison Keys. Many tournaments conduct community involvement activities while the tournament is in progress to create awareness of the USTA Pro Circuit, and to provide a fun experience for people in the community. These events also provide an opportunity for people to try tennis and join a program. The official mobile app for the USTA Pro Circuit is now available, and can be downloaded by searching “procircuit in the iTunes App Store or Google Play. procircuit.usta.com Mylan World TeamTennis always offers fans plenty of thrills, but it is extra exciting in the USTA Missouri Valley, home to the Springfield Lasers. For each of these groups, USTA Missouri Valley Adaptive Tennis provides grant money, equipment and resources for specifically-tailored programs that provide fun, fitness and a positive social experience for participants. USTA Adaptive Tennis program works to provide opportunities to all populations to enjoy and realize the benefits of tennis and its life changing opportunities. Wheelchair Tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, USTA offers programs geared toward the wheelchair player. Rules are the same as stand-up tennis, except the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces of the ball. USTA Wheelchair Tennis programs provide persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing USTA Wheelchair Tennis adds to the socialization and normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users can play and actively compete against stand-up players. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability. For more than 10 years, National Parks and Recreation Association (NPRA) has partnered with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to bring parks and recreation agencies, Tennis in the Parks (TIP). TIP is a strategic initiative designed to help you improve and expand opportunities in communities nationwide, for the public to learn and play the lifelong game of tennis. Tennis In the Parks (TIP) and all associated program resources are FREE to eligible agencies that are committed to growing and improving tennis programs and infrastructure in the community. 10 & Under Tennis Players Now Aspiring for Stars and Trophies Using an online videogame-like experience to reflect on-court achievement, the United States Tennis Association Missouri Valley is hoping it can provide the appropriate pathway in order to produce the tennis stars of tomorrow. The United States Tennis Association and its sections have created a “Youth Progression Pathway” that serves as a guide for coaches, parents and players to help ensure that kids 10 and under participate in events using the appropriate ball and court for their skill level. Bottom line, the more kids play, the more stars and trophies they earn. Best of all, they improve their skills along the way. Tournaments began in January across the USTA Missouri Valley. Players will compete at appropriate levels of play as they progress through stages based on age, participation and achievement. Participants in orange-ball tournaments play on 60foot courts, using tennis balls with 50 percent of the compression of a regulation tennis ball, while participants in greenball tournaments play on a regulation-sized court using tennis balls with 75 percent of the compression of a regulation tennis ball. A child can advance to another level by earning the required amount of virtual participation stars and trophies. Players will have to collect a combination of 20 stars and/or trophies to advance to the next level. “Players and parents are no longer seeing the basic match results when they log-in,” said Amanda Pratzel, Youth Pathway Coordinator for USTA Missouri Valley. “They’re seeing the stars and trophies." The program also taps into the popularity of video games and mobile gaming among children. According to the Entertainment Software Association, 63 percent of parents say video games are a positive part of their child’s life. Combine the popular gaming with an active outlet such as tennis and the goal is to engage children while helping them fall in love with tennis. The USTA Missouri Valley has over 150 Youth Progression tournaments scheduled for 2016 so far across its five-state area in which children can participate. Participation in tennis tournaments for children 10 and under across the USTA Missouri Valley increased by 13 percent in 2015 from the previous year, which is higher than the 5 percent increase nationally. Rallying the Family Wickhams Throw Their Own Tournament, Build Traditions

By Andrew Robinson

4 MISSOURIVALLEY.USTA.COM SPRING 2016

It was the 1970s and tennis in the United States was as popular as it had ever been. Stan Smith, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe all won US Open titles during the decade. Tom Wickham of Dubuque, Iowa was just falling in love with the game. Wickham, standing at 6-foot, 6-inches tall, had been a successful basketball player but competitive play opportunities were dwindling and he needed something to keep his competitive spark going. So he turned to tennis. He started playing tournaments in the mid 1970s and would continue to do so until a few years ago, most recently winning the 75s Doubles Division in the Mississippi Valley Open held in the Quad Cities in 2014. Wickham was named the USTA Adult Player of the Year in 2001. He finished 2015 ranked no. 1 in the USTA Missouri Valley 75+ Singles rankings. But it isn’t just Wickham’s playing career that he’s most proud of. Wickham has created a tennis dynasty with his family.

“There was never pressure to win,” Jay Wickham said. “If you analyze our family, you’re not going to find any NCAA division one champions. But we’re all competitive, a few of us played in college. There was never pressure to win and be great but rather play and be competitive and I think that’s why we all still play today.” Tom and and his wife Brenda have also used his retirement as an opportunity to see all four of Tennis’ grand slams, visiting Melbourne earlier this year.

“There was never pressure to win...but rather play and be competitive. I think that’s why we all still play today.”

With eight children, and 22 grandchildren, the Wickhams are a near perfect picture of what it means to rally the family around the game of tennis.

The Wickhams were named the USTA Iowa and USTA Missouri Valley Family of the Year in 2006. Four of Tom and Brenda’s children have been teaching professionals or coaches, as well.

Afternoons in the Wickham home were frequently spent by gathering a few siblings and walking to nearby courts to hit for a few hours before returning home.

The Wickham family can be a model for families who want to find an activity in which everyone regardless of age can be involved. And the tennis industry has taken note of the need for more families to get on the court.

Jay Wickham, one of Tom’s six sons, began playing at age 7 and still remembers his first tournament vividly. More than that, he acknowledges that it is his father’s attitude that has been passed down from generation to generation that keeps family members playing.

tennis court. Other matches for the tournament are also held at nearby courts. For the first several years, the tournament was complete with various divisions. Tom and his wife would peel off the plaques from his old trophies and replace them with labels for the Welsh Open. “It has gotten a little more social over the years,” Jay Wickham said. The tournament included cookouts and t-shirts which listed each year’s champions. Because the tournament is held every other year, the family filled in the subsequent years with professionals’ names such as Pete Sampras or Andre Agassi. The tournament has become a tradition and family reunion for the Wickhams that remains a mainstay on the family’s calendar even as the family continues to grow larger and other demands pull them in different directions. When Jay Wickham reminisces on the game and what it has meant to him, he thinks of the opportunities it continues to provide. “You just enjoy it and you do it,” Jay Wickham said. “It’s really a bonding experience for us.”

The Wickhams have their own biannual way of rallying the family. For almost 20 years, the family has also held it’s own tennis tournament — The Welsh Open. Jay Wickham’s brother-in-law, Jimmy Welsh started the tournament in 1997 and hosts it at his backyard

The Tennis Industry Association has rolled out its “Rally the Family” campaign, which is a collaborative effort with the USTA, equipment manufacturers and other organizations designed to boost tennis activity and interest across the country. Industry officials found tennis participation was remaining flat and equipment sales were beginning to lag. The resulting discussion was a unified, collaborative focus on family tennis — an appeal to kids, parents, siblings and grandparents in a way that would get them out onto the court, creating regular and “core” tennis players. Facilities are encouraged to put a greater emphasis on family-oriented programming for players of all levels and abilities, but particularly for beginners to showcase the lifetime opportunities tennis offers. Tennis has had an estimated 70 million “samplers” people who have tried playing tennis a few times in their life but never really got in the game. Throughout the year, the USTA Missouri Valley hosts family-oriented events across its five state area. In May, it hosts the USTA National Husband Wife Mixed Hard Court Championship and Same Gender Couples Doubles tournament in Kansas City, and in July it will host the USTA Missouri Valley Section Family Championship in St. Louis, just to name a few.

Adult Leagues Strive to Capitalize on Successful 2015 By Andrew Robinson

The days are beginning to get warmer, and your itch to get outside and be competitive is beginning to increase. USTA Adult League Tennis may be your answer for a healthy, competitive outlet. Captains are organizing teams now for the upcoming spring and summer seasons. For League participants, lifelong memories are made with their teammates during the season through social events, memorable matches and overall camaraderie. But when a team earns the opportunity to advance to the National Championships and plays well, it makes the experience all the better. Last year, five teams from USTA Missouri Valley returned from the National Championships with impressive results. Those results were highlighted by the 18 and over, 4.5 women’s team from Edmond, Okla., which won its National Championship. Co-captained by Nina Loeffler and Nicky Glover, the squad won 4-1 over USTA Southern California in the championship match at Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Four other teams from USTA Missouri Valley had a very strong showing at the National Championships. Those results include a second place finish by the 9.0 mixed doubles team from USTA Heart of America in Tucson, Ariz., (captain: Harrison Hill), a third place finish by the 18 & Over 3.0 women’s team from USTA Oklahoma (captain: Kristin Schenk), a third place finish by the 55 & Over 8.0 men’s team from USTA Kansas in Surprise, Ariz., (captain: James Pigg), and a fourth place finish by the 55 & Over 9.0 men’s team from USTA St. Louis in Surprise, Ariz. (captain: John Kinsella). While the teams that finished well at the USTA National Championships are a small portion of the 40 teams who represented the USTA Missouri Valley, it represents the increase in depth in Leagues across the section over the last several years. Local Leagues are consistently adding new players, which means better competition. In 2015, League participation was up five percent in the USTA Missouri Valley. Last year’s success for the aforementioned teams puts a good cap on the year, said Lori Therrien, Program Manager of Adult Competition for USTA Missouri Valley. “We wanted to provide a more positive experience, concentrate on good customer experience and reach out to younger adults which we feel resulted in increased participation,” Therrien said. Therrien believes if the player experience continues to improve, the retention of players will continue to improve. “Great Leagues are more enjoyable for everybody,” she said. Established in 1980, USTA Missouri Valley Leagues now has 20,000 participants across its seven districts. USTA League Tennis was established to provide adult recreational tennis players throughout the country with the opportunity to compete against players of similar ability levels. Players participate on teams in a league format, which is administered by the USTA through its 17 sections. If you’re interested in finding a USTA League near you, let us help you! We look forward to seeing you on the courts! Contact Lori Therrien, Program Manager for Adult Competition, at 913-322-4829, or see page 9 for a list of USTA League Tennis Coordinators by district. Tournament Players Always Hungry for

Competition By Andrew Robinson

Terry Jackson and Rick Friedrich are fiercely competitive. They met each other playing in leagues in the mid-2000s, and joined Kansas City Racquet Club. But for the last seven years, they’ve been playing USTA Adult Tournaments, working toward a district, section, and even national ranking. “It’s a prestige type of thing,” Jackson said. In 2015, Jackson and Friedrich finished second in the United States Tennis Association Missouri Valley 4.5 Doubles rankings, while finishing atop the Men’s 55 Doubles rankings. But for Jackson and Friedrich, it’s also about new experiences and new opponents who they wouldn’t otherwise see playing USTA Leagues or at a club. Adult tournaments are regularly held at local facilities across the five-state area of the USTA Missouri Valley. Draw types can vary from compass draws where participants are guaranteed a specific number of matches to single elimination tournaments. While USTA Adult Leagues continue to see growth in the USTA Missouri Valley, Jackson and Friedrich both agree that weekend tournaments offer the opportunity to complement their League efforts. 8 MISSOURIVALLEY.USTA.COM SPRING 2016

“We still play as many leagues as we can,” Jackson said. “But we’re a bit of an odd duck. Maybe it’s the competitive juices.” Friedrich said he’s observed more and more fatigue from players playing leagues and they have less interest in tournaments. But they hope that can be turned around as they both agree the best tournaments are those with large, competitive draws. “The bigger the draw is, the more fun it is,” Jackson said. League players are often concerned foremost with NTRP ratings, but the tournament rankings have no impact on ratings, even though NTRP ratings are often used to determine divisions. Tournaments don’t always last all weekend either. There’s a growing trend of alternative style tournaments, including tiebreaker tournaments which are played over half a day, or even just one-day tournaments that are completed over the course of a Saturday or Sunday. Wood racquet tournaments have also been held in the section, and in July, St. Louis will host the USTA Missouri Valley Family Section Championships, which includes several types of divisions.

Jackson and Friedrich have regularly traveled around the USTA Missouri Valley, playing tournaments in Omaha, Des Moines, St. Louis and Joplin. Some of their best memories have been made heading to USTA national tournaments, however. “If people can afford it, going to these national tournaments is great. It’s usually in a picturesque setting,” Jackson said. “The only trouble with the national tournament scene is that’s a week-long commitment.”

If you’re interested in trying tournaments, it’s possible you could play your first for free. If you are a USTA Missouri Valley resident and a USTA Member and would like to play in your first USTA Missouri Valley Adult Tournament, or if you have questions contact Lori Therrien, Adult Competition Program Manager at (913) 322-4829 or therrien@movalley.usta.com.
