MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

WHAT AN EXCITING TIME TO BE INVOLVED IN TENNIS! The USTA is in its final stages of remodeling the US Open to become the best venue for tennis in the world, to be completed in 2018. The success of the US Open will allow the funding to help grow the game throughout the country. The recent completion of the home of US tennis, the USTA National Campus in Orlando, with 100 courts for recreational and high performance training will change the way the world views US tennis. The possibilities are endless. We could easily be on the verge of another tennis boom. The youth initiative with modified equipment is already showing results with our up and coming touring pros. Look for exciting announcements in 2017 to take our youth brand to the next level, add more flexibility to Adult league and tournament play and the digital transformation to a new single USTA website! USTA Missouri Valley is fortunate to have a great working relationship with the staff and volunteers. Our relationship with the delivery system, the teaching pro organizations continues to grow. This year the USPTA Missouri Valley division held their Board meeting during our Section Annual meeting in December. The districts continue to be successful and can take pride as everyone is working toward the common goal to promote and develop the grow of tennis in the USTA Missouri Valley Section. The USTA has something for everyone, whether you are six or 96. Whether you are a weekend recreational player or a serious tournament player there is some form of organized play that lets you choose what you want from tennis, whether you prefer to play on a team as in Junior Team Tennis and Adult leagues or as an individual in tournaments. We always need more volunteers. Whether you have a little time or a lot please consider joining the USTA Missouri Valley team. Players with a passion for the game can help others by channeling that burn to getting others involved. Spread the word and check with your local CTA or District office to get involved. Or, call the USTA Missouri Valley office.

Community Tennis Guide YOUTH TENNIS 10 and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kidsized courts and kid-sized equipment. With 10 and Under Tennis, balls bounce lower, don’t move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Racquets are sized for small hands while courts are smaller and easier to cover. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration. The rules require that 10 and Under Tennis tournaments be played using slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls, on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter racquets, which is incorporated into the Missouri Valley’s “Youth Progression Player Pathway.” The Youth Progression Player Pathway promotes play in red, orange, and green ball events and is structured in a way that will allow young players to remain at the appropriate level until they are granted advancement by way of age, results, or participation. Player’s advancement in orange and green ball is determined by the amount of stars and trophies they have earned, which are awarded for playing in Youth Progression tournaments, being on a Junior Team Tennis team and/or participation in Youth Progression Play Days.

Play Days let kids experience the thrill of competition without the pressure. Kids are introduced to competition in a low-pressure setting where the emphasis is on FUN. Play Days allow kids to gain match-play experience with others of similar age and skill so they can transition to team tennis and tournaments. Play Days typically last two to three hours, and kids get to play multiple matches in a non-elimination setting—all with the goal of enhancing skills and making friends in a fun, social atmosphere. For both novices and experienced players, Play Days are a welcoming way for kids to experience the social and competitive aspects of tennis. Junior Team Tennis offers girls and boys age 8 to 18 the opportunity to play on teams in local league play that emphasizes developing skills, play opportunities and fun. Players are matched by similar age and ability using the Junior National Tennis Rating Program (JNTRP). A league consists of a minimum of two teams in the same division. Teams play against each other in one of the following divisions based on age and skill level: • 8 & under: Local Junior Team Tennis opportunities • 10 & under: Local Junior Team Tennis opportunities • 12 & under - Local & District Junior Team Tennis opportunities • 14 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced - Eligible to advance to section & national championships • 18 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced - Eligible to advance to section & national championships

Junior Tournaments give players the opportunity to advance their game by competing in match play situations against peers with similar skill levels. Competing in junior tournaments will help players learn the skill sets necessary to take their game to the next level – high school, college or the pros. There are many play opportunities available at the district, section and national levels. Junior competition includes events for everyone- from first time competitors to top level tournaments for more experienced competitors. Tournament play offers many different formats that give you multiple opportunities to compete. The round robin, feed-in championships and team events are just a few of the many options. Find a junior tournament near you by using TennisLink. USTA School Tennis is designed to introduce the sport to youth through PE classes and extracurricular activities. Children will learn the basics of tennis in PE class, then play games in Kids’ Tennis Clubs. The USTA Missouri Valley can provide free teacher workshops that demonstrate lessons from the USTA’s tennis curriculum which was developed for teachers with large numbers of students in schools without traditional tennis courts. The USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) is a nation-wide network of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. The NJTL mission is to reach out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play the sport, while instilling in these young people the values of leadership and academic excellence. The program gives all kids (regardless of income, race, or gender) the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so that they can derive a life time of enjoyment from the sport. The NJTL program is a great way for kids to get exercise, make friends, and have fun in a, team-oriented, safe environment. NJTL offers a variety of on and off-court programming, emphasizing educational and life-skill components to enhance overall development. This curriculum is offered at little or no cost to the participant. NJTL chapters are divided into differen’t levels, within the USTA, based on size and programming the chapter is able to provide.

ADULT TENNIS Varsity collegiate tennis in the United States provides opportunities for thousands of players to continue their tennis careers while also earning a college degree. There are three associations governing collegiate athletics: the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Each association sponsors a season-ending National Championship for its divisions. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. The ITA administers a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program. The goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching. The USTA Tennis on Campus program is a natural extension to a college or university’s physical education tennis classes, intramurals/extramurals program or recreational league. USTA Tennis on Campus programs offer students and faculty the chance to compete in a friendly and competitive playing environment. The playing format of USTA Tennis on Campus is designed to be flexible, so that it will work on any campus and incorporate players of all ability levels and teams of all sizes. Beginning players may elect to concentrate more on skill building and the social aspects of tennis, while more advanced players might opt to form a sport club team and compete against nearby schools. Players who choose the more competitive route will have the opportunity to compete against Tennis on Campus teams from not only across the Missouri Valley section, but the country as well. This includes university hosted invitationals, the Missouri Valley Fall Invitational and Section Championship, and a National Championship event. This provides a great opportunity for players to compete against and form friendships with competitors from universities across the country.

USTA League Tennis is one of the most successful recreational sports programs in the country. Players can make friends and compete not only in matches against players with similar abilities, but also as part of a team. USTA Leagues has more than 20,000 participants in the Missouri Valley and includes more than 800,000 players from all across the nation, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. In addition to competing locally, you can vie for district, section and even national championships – just as long as your team keeps winning. Players range in age from 18 to 90 (and beyond), so there’s a team for you to play singles, doubles or mixed. USTA Flex Leagues packages all the thrills of organized league tennis into a flexible schedule so everyone, regardless of time constraints and ability, can play. With Flex Leagues, it’s your call. The Flex League format groups players of similar ability together in an organized seven to ten week league that allows participants to schedule matches on their own terms. Flex Leagues can be either singles or doubles, within NTRP ratings or by gender, ensuring fair and competitive matches. There are many adult and senior tournaments offered at the district and section level. These tournaments are for players of all levels and players can enter to compete in either singles or doubles. These tournaments match players by skill level or age and they are a great way to maintain or improve your tennis skills playing against new competitors who are on your level. Find a list of adult and senior tournaments in your area on TennisLink.

professional TENNIS The USTA Pro Circuit was formed in 1979 to provide players with an opportunity to gain the professional ranking points needed to compete on the major pro tours. It also serves as the pathway to the US Open. Many of today’s top players began their professional tennis careers by competing on the USTA Pro Circuit – Jon Isner, Andy Murray, Jack Sock, Madison Keys, and Sloane Stephens, to name a few. In 2017, the USTA Pro Circuit will have five stops in USTA Missouri Valley. This gives our local communities the opportunity to see professional tennis players up close, and to become involved with the tournament activities. Our host sites rely on local tennis enthusiasts to help with many aspects of the tournament. In addition, most host sites provide community involvement events such as clinics run by the players, pro-ams, kids’ days, and more. Join the fun and excitement – find a tournament near you!

Mylan World TeamTennis always offers fans plenty of thrills, but it is extra exciting in the USTA Missouri Valley, home to the Springfield Lasers. For each of these groups, USTA Missouri Valley Adaptive Tennis provides grant money, equipment and resources for specifically-tailored programs that provide fun, fitness and a positive social experience for participants. Regional clinics and instructional programs are held throughout the country. The enjoyment, physical well-being and contact shared by participants have proven to be positive sources of self-esteem, helping open doors to a more positive lifestyle. USTA Adaptive Tennis program works to provide opportunities to all populations to enjoy and realize the benefits of tennis and its life changing opportunities. Wheelchair Tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, USTA offers programs geared toward the wheelchair player. Rules are the same as stand-up tennis, except the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces of the ball. USTA Wheelchair Tennis programs provide persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing USTA Wheelchair Tennis adds to the socialization and normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users can play and actively compete against stand-up players. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability. Diversity and Inclusion Statement: Embracing diversity and encouraging multicultural outreach efforts is essential to achieving the USTA Missouri Valley’s mission to grow the sport of tennis. We are committed to fostering a tennis environment that is more inclusive and inviting to all people. In working to expand the image of tennis, the USTA Missouri Valley is focused on broadening and increasing diverse participation in the sport and serving as a model for all organizations that aspire to successful growth and an inclusive environment. For more than 13 years, National Parks and Recreation Association (NPRA) has partnered with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to bring parks and recreation agencies, Tennis in the Parks (TIP). TIP is a strategic initiative designed to help you improve and expand opportunities in communities nationwide, for the public to learn and play the lifelong game of tennis. Tennis In the Parks (TIP) and all associated program resources are FREE to eligible agencies that are committed to growing and improving tennis programs and infrastructure in the community.

Granting Local Success

USTA Missouri Valley Schools Tennis Organizer, Carrie Hellerich, awards the $19,000 grant to North Kansas City School District.

The USTA Missouri Valley offers two different grants to tennis providers across its five-state area. The section has its Serving Up Tennis Grants which is intended to assist notfor-profit organizations in initiating or expanding their tennis programming activities. In 2016, there were a number of success stories throughout the USTA Missouri Valley. There were nearly 60 recipients of the Serving Up Tennis Grant, and grants totaled $36,000. One of the largest grant recipients was the North Kansas City School District in North Kansas City, Mo. The district had 19 elementary schools apply for grants and as a district received $19,000 in grants, which will assist in providing the resources needed to implement tennis into the physical education curriculum. “My elementary PE budget is pretty tight,” said Jason Fowler, physical education and health coordinator for the district.. “The grants make tennis a doable thing for our district.”

Whiteman Air Force Base, and the City of Audubon, Iowa., were also among those to receive grants as both organizations look to build its tennis programming. The Serving Up Tennis Grant may be used to start programs and/or leagues for players of all ages, abilities and populations. Those awarded grants will receive half up front and the second half upon completion of program and submission of accountability form. The USTA Missouri Valley also offers the Grow the Game Grant which provides funding for USTA Member providers that do not fall under the not-for-profit statues to help initiate or expand community tennis activities that address the following areas. • Youth imperative, specifically the 6-12 age group. • Junior development, specifically growing the middle the pyramid through local play and competition such as Junior Team Tennis and entry level tournaments as well as reaching out to middle and high school players. • Program opportunities for Millennials. There were six recipients of the Grow the Game Grant in 2016 with grants totaling $2,000. Contact Tara Williams (williams@movalley.usta.com) for more information.

Larry Knows Best

By Andrew Robinson

Larry Haugness knows what it takes to grow the game of tennis. Haugness, the new USTA Missouri Valley president, who is the community tennis director at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo., has been involved with the USTA for nearly four decades and is serving a two-year term as president of the USTA Missouri Valley. His involvement has spanned three different sections within the USTA including USTA Intermountain and USTA Texas. He’ll be looking to carry momentum from a successful 2016 in which Tennis Industry Magazine named the USTA Missouri Valley its Section of the Year and USTA also honored three facilities within the section as Outstanding Facilities. “We’ve got a base to work from and we can move up from there,” Hugeness said. “I see some great opportunities within the districts to communicate with each other and share ideas and grow as an entire section.” Haugness is becoming president at a time in which the USTA Missouri Valley continues to successfully grow its Youth Progression tournaments as well as continue to maintain its successful USTA League program and junior programs. But among Haugness’ biggest goals is unity among the seven districts within the USTA Missouri Valley. “I see teamwork as a big deal,” he said. “There are opportunities to share ideas, issues, and solutions among the districts. With the leadership we have, there’s so much knowledge and information there that can be put to good use.” Haugness started playing tennis at age 14 as a way to spend more time with friends. After a successful high school career, he went on to play at Boise State University. Shortly after graduation, he wanted to find ways to start giving back and did so as a volunteer. Hugeness has served as president of USTA Missouri, USTA Wyoming, USTA Idaho and the district in El Paso, Texas. At Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, which has 17 outdoor courts and 12 indoor courts, the facility’s outreach programs serve approximately 8,000 people annually.

“I see some great opportunities within the districts to share ideas and grow as an entire section.”

When Haugness’ two year term is up in 2018, he hopes he leaves the leadership in such a manner that they have different issues than we have now. “And I certainly want more people playing tennis,” he said.

How PREPared Are You For Your Match? P R E - M AT C H P R E PA R AT I O N

BLISTER CARE

HAVE I WARMED UP?

ARE MY FEET DRY?

• Approximately 30-40 minutes prior to start of match, you should raise your core temperature to prevent injury. Example: Light jog, stationary bike, dynamic stretching

• Make sure your feet are dry before putting your socks and shoes on

HOW ARE MY TOES?

DO I HAVE ENOUGH ENERGY?

• Powder between toes will decrease moisture in the skin and decrease the chance of blisters

• At least 30 minutes prior to the start of the match, you should have a snack • If you are not scheduled for the first match of the day, you should snack approximately every hour after you eat the first meal of the day

HOW ARE MY SOCKS?

DO I HAVE ENOUGH FUEL FOR THE COURT?

• During changeovers, you should snack every 10-20 minutes to maintain energy during the match, especially if it extends into three sets • Snack examples – a bite of sports bar, pretzels, sports gel, banana, peanut butter crackers

DO I HAVE ENOUGH FLUID?

• You need to drink both anti-doping approved sports drinks and water during the match to maintain proper hydration and energy levels • 3:2 ratio of sports drink to water is recommended

• If you’re wearing two pairs of socks, put on the first pair inside out and the second pair right side out to prevent blisters due to the nubby side of the sock • Change socks frequently during the match to prevent moisture buildup

HOW ARE MY SHOES?

• Make sure your shoes fit properly • The shoe should fit your foot; your foot should not fit the shoe

AM I A SLIDER?

• Place Vaseline on the outside of the inside sock to cut down on friction • See SMT (Sports Medicine Therapist) for lacing techniques to limit slide in shoes

DO I HAVE TWO CHANGES OF CLOTHES?

• Dry clothes help remove heat from the body and prevent heat illness

P O S T- M AT C H R E C OV E RY

DO I HAVE SUNSCREEN?

• Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to the match to work most effectively

WHEN IS MY NEXT MATCH? IS IT TODAY? IS IT TOMORROW?

DO I HAVE A HAT?

• Adjust food intake to the time between matches, a few hours vs. a day

• A hat will help keep you cooler and protect skin from the sun

HAVE I HAD MY RECOVERY SNACK?

H E AT I L L N E S S P R E V E N T I O N HAVE I BEEN DRINKING ENOUGH FLUIDS PRIOR TO MY MATCH? • It is very important to hydrate both the day before the match and the day of the match

IS MY URINE CLEAR?

• Urine should be pale yellow or clear when properly hydrated, unless taking a multi-vitamin

DO I HAVE LIGHT-COLORED CLOTHING?

HAVE I COOLED DOWN?

• Wearing light-colored clothing and wicking fabric decreases heat retention, keeping the body cooler • Change of clothes – dry shirts, skirts, shorts or dresses allow the body to release heat

• A light jog, stationary bike ride or a walk in the pool is recommended • You never want to transition from a high-intensity exercise to stationary, as this may lead to injury

DO I HAVE MY DRINKS?

HAVE I STRETCHED?

• You should have a 3:2 ratio of approved sports drink to water per match (i.e. three 16-20 ounce bottles of sports drink to two bottles of water)

HAVE I ADDED SALT TO MY DRINKS?

• Stretching is critical to prevent injury

HAVE I EATEN ENOUGH?

• Recommend ½ packet of salt for every 20 ounce bottle sports drink to help with electrolyte loss from sweating

AM I DRINKING?

• From the beginning of the match, drink one gulp of water for every gulp of sports drink at each changeover • If you’re thirsty, you may already be dehydrated

DO I HAVE MY ICE BAGS/ TOWELS?

• Start using from the beginning of the match to keep cool • Place on groin, underarms, back of neck and abdomen

• Eat a snack or have recovery drink no later than 30-40 minutes post-match • The snack should be a 4:1 ratio of carbohydrate to protein and 200-400 calories. Examples: - Chocolate milk - Recovery drinks - Fruit juices (cherry) - 1 medium banana and glass of low-fat milk - A bowl of granola with 1 cup low-fat milk - Low-fat yogurt with 1/2 cup of fresh berries - Almond butter on whole wheat toast - A bowl of whole grain cereal with low-fat milk

• If you’re done competing for the day, you should have a regular meal within one to two hours of your recovery snack • The meal should consist of easy to digest protein (fish, chicken, and turkey), carbs (rice, pasta bread) and low-fat • Red meat and high-fat foods require more water to digest and may actually limit recovery in high-heat conditions • You should have a light snack prior to bed to keep energy stores up

HAVE I URINATED ENOUGH?

• You should urinate 4-5 times prior to the next day’s match and urine should be close to clear

HAVE I SLEPT ENOUGH?

• It is important to get a full night of restful sleep

ASK A TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR

Fait h

In 2016, USTA Missouri Valley honored a junior tournament director each quarter. The winners have shared their insights into how to successfully run tournaments and why they enjoy it so much. Here’s a sampling of their best thoughts and advice on running tournaments.

Bl

Faith Bliss, first quarter: What is one thing you’ve learned as a tournament director? I played tournaments as kid so I knew the expectations and the rules, but I didn’t realize how many different groups of kids that coaches brought with them to tournaments. It was a little eye opening.

is s

What’s your advice to other tournament directors? Have fun with it. If you’re not having fun, the people in the facility aren’t having fun. It’s tennis — it’s a game, it’s a sport. It’s supposed to be fun.

Lisa: One of my things I’ve learned is how to handle conflict situations. You have a lot of parents or even kids for that matter that get upset or get cranky with a tournament director. I try to put myself in their shoes and try to find a way to diffuse the situation or make it better for the future. (continued on next page)

Li

sa

David

David and Lisa Minihan, second quarter: What is one thing you’ve learned as a tournament director? David: I think through the years, you learn that organization is the key to having a successful event. If you’re not organized as a tournament director or administrator, it’s going to be much more difficult. Lisa and I are both very type A personalities. We do everything in our power to make sure that nothing slips through the cracks. I learned my lesson early that you must be detail oriented, and make sure that you get everything done correctly and efficiently. We send a number of emails out and really make sure that the experience is a smooth one for players and parents.

an with their fam h i n il y Mi

C

What’s your advice to other tournament directors? David: Number one is customer service. You have to treat players, parents, whoever it may be like a customer just as you would treat a person who is visiting your pro shop. Tournament directors maybe get a reputation as coming across stern or intimidating. We have to do a good job to make the tournament a positive experience. I think new tournament directors must realize that they have a very important role in educating and making sure it is a very positive experience even if a player loses both of his or her matches.

beth o r a

Kelly

Carobeth Kelly, third quarter: What’s your advice to new tournament directors? Communication is very important. I’ve always done the pretournament email and get parents involved from the very beginning and get them what they need to know. For example, at Dwight Davis we talk about things like parking. I communicate about the overall schedule, I explain scheduling, I just tell them as much as possible so if you’re not on schedule, people aren’t surprised. I encourage checking in 15 minutes early and I feel like by doing that, it just makes everyone’s stress go away. There’s no guessing game, no mystery behind it. I really feel like we have minimal issues. As far as sportsmanship, I’ve become an official and knowing the separate set of issues they can experience, I can give an even better pretournament speech to the kids discussing expectations. Has being an official been very beneficial as a tournament director? I would recommend becoming an official. By being one myself, I understand all the rules better and the things I can do at the tournament desk to make that person’s job easier.

bb

J

Jason Grubb, fourth quarter: What do you hope to improve this year in terms of running a tournament? I want to keep my streak alive of never having run behind in a tournament. That always seems to make the players and parents happy. Rather than hurry up and wait, I get really close to the rules as far as breaks go, but I always try to keep it moving.

Gr u n a so

What have you learned as a tournament director? Put in the preparation beforehand. It’s all about preparation, like anything. Get your volunteers organized, get your officials organized. Be able to schedule as many matches before the tournament starts.

Worth noting: Those days of registering at the last minute for USTA Missouri Valley adult tournaments are hopefully in the past. The USTA Missouri Valley has introduced a fee schedule for its adult tournaments. The later you register, the more expensive your tournament registration is likely to be. The hope with the fee schedule is that players will register earlier giving tournament directors a better idea as to how many players will be in a draw and can avoid making scheduling adjustments at the last minute. Also be on the look out for promo codes as the tournament you’re interested in registering for may offer one-time discounts. The first-year free program for millennial players will also return this year. If you are a Missouri Valley resident and a USTA Member between the ages of 18-39 and would like to play your first USTA Missouri Valley Adult Tournament, we have a deal for you! You may play your first Adult Section Tournament for free by contacting the section office Adult Competition Program Manager, Lori Therrien, at 913-322-4829 or therrien@movalley.usta.com to receive your coupon code for a free registration. Promotion is open to the first 50 new tournament participants. Registrations must be completed before the registration closed dates. Eligible events for this promotion are listed on the schedule above.

NET NOTES Tennis Industry Magazine named USTA Missouri Valley as the USTA Section of the Year for 2016. Some of the highlights mentioned in the article as to why the USTA Missouri Valley was awarded include its efforts in promoting Youth Progression, hispanic outreach as well as programs for the wheelchair and adaptive communities. Adult leagues have also grown in 2016. The publication also recognized the Oklahoma City Tennis Center as the Municipal Tennis Facility of the Year, and Scott Hanover as the Grassroots Champion of the Year in this year’s Champions of Tennis issue. The Oklahoma City Tennis Center was recognized for completing its addition of six indoor courts and youth courts in the past 18 months. Hanover was recognized for his desire to grow the game of tennis through grassroots program. At the Plaza Tennis Center, where Hanover is the Director of Tennis, he hosts a myriad of programs for all skill and age levels in an effort to introduce tennis to as many people as possible.

Jack Sock was a member of the U.S. Davis Cup team, which swept Switzerland in the World Group First Round. Sock claimed a win over Marco Chiudinelli and John Isner defeated Henri Laaksonenon Friday Those matched were followed by Sock and Steve Johnson's doubles triumph over Laaksonen and Bossel at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Center. The U.S. will next play in Australia, April 7-9, at a site to be determined by the Aussies. The U.S. is 26-20 all-time vs. Australia in a rivalry that dates back to 1905, winning their last meeting, 3-1, in Kooyong, Australia, in the 2016 World Group first round.

This year, there are over 150 tournaments scheduled throughout the USTA Missouri Valley. Players will compete at appropriate levels of play as they progress through stages based on age, participation and achievement. A child can advance to another level by earning the required amount of virtual participation stars and trophies.
