If you have want to learn more about youth tennis as a player, parent, coach, teacher or volunteer NETGENERATION.com is the place to go. We are uniting the industry under one brand, building a safe and secure environment for children to play tennis. We are building alignment across the country with consistent curriculums, assessment tools and defined competencies. Approved providers are uploading available programming and consumers can find those programs at NETGENERATION.com. Within our communities we are building relationships with providers and schools to offer after school tennis programs for k-12. We will continue to build on team play throughout the section, including Junior Team Tennis, Tennis on Campus, and Adult leagues. We are emphasizing flexibility in scoring formats and tournament formats for all ages. There is something for everyone’s age and schedule out there! To continue the growth of tennis in our communities, we need more volunteers. Whether you have a little time or a lot of time, please become a part of our team. Please spread the word and check with your local CTA, NJTL or District office to get involved. You may also call the USTA Missouri Valley office and we can help get you connected to a community near you!

COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE

YOUTH TENNIS Net Generation is a new kid-friendly approach to tennis that hopes to inspire the next generation of young tennis players, ages 5-18. Specifically in 10 and Under Tennis, balls bounce lower, don’t move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Racquets are sized for small hands while courts are smaller and easier to cover. Net Generation aims to make it easier for children and their parents to learn about tennis and get into the game in schools, parks and tennis clubs across the country. To ensure a safe environment, all Net Generation providers – including coaches, teachers, players and volunteers – must first go through a Safe Play Program, which involves a three-step process, including a background check. The Youth Progression Player Pathway promotes play in red, orange, and green ball events and is structured in a way that will allow young players to remain at the appropriate level until they are granted advancement by way of age, results, or participation. Player’s advancement in orange and green ball is determined by the amount of stars and trophies they have earned, which are awarded for playing in Youth Progression tournaments (Smashers), being on a 10 & Under Junior Team Tennis team and/ or participation in Tennis BASH events. Tennis BASH events are simple, clearly defined, turn-key and consistently fantastic tennis play experiences. These events allow let kids experience the thrill of competition without the pressure. Tennis BASH events introduce kids to a fun, low-pressure match play experience. Tennis BASH events last from 90 minutes to two hours, and kids get multiple match and point play in a non-elimination setting. The goal of these events is to enchance skills and make friends in a fun social atmosphere. For both beginning and experienced players, Tennis BASH events are a welcoming way for kids to experience social and competitive aspects of tennis.

Junior Team Tennis offers girls and boys age 6 to 18 the opportunity to play on teams in local league play that emphasizes developing skills, play opportunities and fun. Players are matched by similar age and ability using the Junior National Tennis Rating Program (JNTRP). A league consists of a minimum of two teams in the same division. Junior Tennis Team follows two tracks to provide opportunities to players of all abilities: Local Junior Team Tennis or Championship Junior Team Tennis. The local track allows kids and team organizers to play on local level with flexible structures, while the championship track provides teams the opportunity to advance to a national championship – the crown jewel of the USTA Junior Team Tennis season. Teams play against each other in one of the following divisions based on age and skill level: • 8 & under: Local Junior Team Tennis opportunities • 10 & under: Local Junior Team Tennis opportunities • 12 & under: Local, District and Section Junior Team Tennis opportunities Eligible to advance to section championship (12U Green) • 14 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced - Local, District and Section Junior Team Tennis opportunities Eligible to advance to section & national championships • 18 & under: Intermediate, or Advanced - Local, District and Section Junior Team Tennis opportunities Eligible to advance to section & national championships Junior Tournaments give players the opportunity to advance their game by competing in match play situations against peers with similar skill levels. Competing in junior tournaments will help players learn the skill sets necessary to take their game to the next level – high school, college or the pros. There are many play opportunities available at the district, section and national levels. Junior competition includes events for everyone- from first time competitors to top level tournaments for more experienced competitors. Tournament play offers many different formats that give you multiple opportunities to compete. The round robin, feed-in championships and team events are just a few of the many options. Find a junior tournament near you by using TennisLink.

Tennis in Schools is designed to introduce the sport to youth through PE classes and extracurricular activities. Children will learn the basics of tennis in PE class, then play games in afterschool programs. The USTA Missouri Valley can provide free teacher workshops that demonstrate lessons from the Net Generation tennis curriculum which has been vetted and approved by SHAPE America®, the leading organization who sets the national standards for physical education. This curriculum has been developed for teachers with large numbers of students in schools without traditional tennis courts. Schools with a USTA membership may access discounted equipment and grants for equipment or to initiate afterschool programming. Register your program in Net Generation and receive FREE school curriculum and equipment, plus other additional benefits.

ADULT TENNIS Varsity collegiate tennis in the United States provides opportunities for thousands of players to continue their tennis careers while also earning a college degree. There are three associations governing collegiate athletics: the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Each association sponsors a season-ending National Championship for its divisions. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. The ITA administers a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program. The goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching. The USTA Tennis on Campus program is a natural extension to a college or university’s physical education tennis classes, intramurals/extramurals program or recreational league. USTA Tennis on Campus programs offer students and faculty the chance to compete in a friendly and competitive playing environment. The playing format of USTA Tennis on Campus is designed to be flexible, so that it will work on any campus and incorporate players of all ability levels and teams of all sizes. Beginning players may elect to concentrate more on skill building and the social aspects of tennis, while more advanced players might opt to form a sport club team and compete against nearby schools. Players who choose the more competitive route will have the opportunity to compete against Tennis on Campus teams from not only across the Missouri Valley section, but the country as well. This includes university hosted invitationals, the Missouri Valley Fall Invitational and Section Championship, and a National Championship event. This provides a great opportunity for players to compete against and form friendships with competitors from universities across the country.

COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE

The USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) is a nation-wide network of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. The NJTL mission is to reach out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play the sport, while instilling in these young people the values of leadership and academic excellence. The program gives all kids (regardless of income, race, or gender) the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so that they can derive a life time of enjoyment from the sport. The NJTL program is a great way for kids to get exercise, make friends, and have fun in a, team-oriented, safe environment. NJTL offers a variety of on and offcourt programming, emphasizing educational and life-skill components to enhance overall development. This curriculum is offered at little or no cost to the participant. NJTL chapters are divided into differen’t levels, within the USTA, based on size and programming the chapter is able to provide.

USTA League Tennis is one of the most successful recreational sports programs in the country. Players can make friends and compete not only in matches against players with similar abilities, but also as part of a team. USTA Leagues has more than 24,000 participants in the Missouri Valley and includes more than 930,000 players from all across the nation, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. In addition to competing locally, you can vie for district, section and even national championships – just as long as your team keeps winning. Players range in age from 18 to 90 (and beyond), so there’s a team for you to play singles, doubles or mixed. Adult Social Leagues are offered throughout the country, and can satisfy your desire for competition while keeping the focus on having fun, meeting new people and hanging out with friends. From “Sets in the City” to 18-39 young-adult leagues to mixed doubles and post-match happy hours, there are a variety of play options available. There are many adult and senior tournaments offered at the district and section level. These tournaments are for players of all levels and players can enter to compete in either singles or doubles. These tournaments match players by skill level or age and they are a great way to maintain or improve your tennis skills playing against new competitors who are on your level. Find a list of adult and senior tournaments in your area on TennisLink.

COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE

PROFESSIONAL TENNIS The USTA Pro Circuit was formed in 1979 to provide players with an opportunity to gain the professional ranking points needed to compete on the major pro tours. It also serves as the pathway to the US Open. Many of today’s top players began their professional tennis careers by competing on the USTA Pro Circuit – Jon Isner, Andy Murray, Jack Sock, Madison Keys, and Sloane Stephens, to name a few. In 2018, the USTA Pro Circuit will have six stops in USTA Missouri Valley. This gives our local communities the opportunity to see professional tennis players up close, and to become involved with the tournament activities. Our host sites rely on local tennis enthusiasts to help with many aspects of the tournament. In addition, most host sites provide community involvement events such as clinics run by the players, proams, kids’ days, and more. Join the fun and excitement – find a tournament near you! Mylan World TeamTennis always offers fans plenty of thrills, but it is extra exciting in the USTA Missouri Valley, home to the Springfield Lasers. The 2018 season will run from July 16 to August 5, with professional tennis players bringing some of the finest tennis around to our section. The USTA is a minority owner and promotional partner of Mylan World TeamTennis. wtt.com SpringfieldLasers.com

OTHER PROGRAMS Diversity and Inclusion Statement: Embracing diversity and encouraging multicultural outreach efforts is essential to achieving the USTA Missouri Valley’s mission to grow the sport of tennis. We are committed to fostering a tennis environment that is more inclusive and inviting to all people. In working to expand the image of tennis, the USTA Missouri Valley is focused on broadening and increasing diverse participation in the sport and serving as a model for all organizations that aspire to successful growth and an inclusive environment. Adaptive Tennis recognizes four main categories of disabilities: 1) Developmentally disabled (learning disabilities, Autism, Down Syndrome, intellectual disabilities). 2) Physically disabled (birth defects, Multiple Sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, Muscular Dystrophy, hearing impaired, stroke, etc.) 3) Consumers of mental health services (psychiatrically disabled, emotionally disturbed). 4) At risk/environmentally disabled (substance abusers, mentally and physically abused, homeless, HIV positive individuals, persons within the juvenile justice system, etc.). For each of these groups, USTA Missouri Valley Adaptive Tennis provides grant money, equipment and resources for specifically-tailored programs that provide fun, fitness and a positive social experience for participants. Regional clinics and instructional programs are held throughout the country. The enjoyment, physical well-being and contact shared by participants have proven to be positive sources of self-esteem, helping open doors to a more positive lifestyle. USTA Adaptive Tennis program works to provide opportunities to all populations to enjoy and realize the benefits of tennis and its life changing opportunities. Wheelchair Tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, USTA offers programs geared toward the wheelchair player. Rules are the same as stand-up tennis, except the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces of the ball. USTA Wheelchair Tennis programs provide persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing USTA Wheelchair Tennis adds to the socialization and normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users can play and actively compete against stand-up players. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability. For more than 13 years, National Parks and Recreation Association (NPRA) has partnered with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to bring parks and recreation agencies, Tennis in the Parks (TIP). TIP is a strategic initiative designed to help you improve and expand opportunities in communities nationwide, for the public to learn and play the lifelong game of tennis. Tennis In the Parks (TIP) and all associated program resources are FREE to eligible agencies that are committed to growing and improving tennis programs and infrastructure in the community.

Community Tennis Associations (CTAs) are not-for-profit, volunteer-based organizations supporting programs that grow the game of tennis. They are located in towns across the section and are great entry points if you’re looking to get started in the game, to play more often or to give back to our lifetime sport. First and foremost, CTAs work to coordinate and maintain tennis programs and services, guaranteeing that they are open and accessible to everyone. Those who run CTAs are tennis enthusiasts who act as advocates, program administrators, promoters or fundraisers – and sometimes as all of these things at once. Community Tennis Associations partner with their communities to help grow tennis at the local level. Some benefits available to CTAs include:

USTA MISSOURI VALLEY RESOURCES USTA Missouri Valley hosts hundreds of tournaments a year and none of them would be possible without the use of officials. If you are interested in becoming an official, there is an on-going program for the recruitment and training of new officials that offers an opportunity for tennis enthusiasts to become involved in a variety of officiating roles. These roles range from overseeing local junior/senior tournaments and collegiate events, to officiating on-court at the US Open. There are numerous volunteer opportunities within the USTA. Volunteers may serve on committees, assist at tournaments and events and assist in many more ways. Every district has different needs and different volunteer opportunities. Whatever your interests or talents, there is definitely a volunteer opportunity for you. Coaching: You’ve already got the love for the game. We’ll give you the ideas, activities and tools you need to help your students improve their games and you advance your programs. Which youth play opportunity is right for you? In addition to competitive junior tournaments, there are a number of opportunities to hone your skills whether you’re just learning the game or trying to move up your high school ladder.

Smashers Tournaments (10 & Under Tennis)

10 and Under Tennis follows the same logic as other youth sports like baseball or soccer, which use kid-sized equipment. Kids learn to play baseball by first playing T-ball; they use shorter, lighter bats and larger, softer balls. Kids learning basketball shoot baskets with kidsized balls on lowered backboards and they play soccer on smaller fields with smaller goals. Red, orange, and green tennis balls bounce lower, they don't move as fast through the air and are easier to hit. Kids tennis racquets are sized for small hands and courts are smaller and easier to cover. By using this format, the benefits are immediate and within a short time kids are rallying, playing, and excited to keep playing. That means kids will have more fun and less frustration. They're playing real tennis and having real fun--and that's what is the most important.

A player just starting out will play someone equal to their ability. Players with more experience but less tournament play will be paired when possible with others of similar ability using the USTA NTRP. An effort is made to group everyone in with others of similar ability. Flights were grouped either by gender and age or grouping with NTRP ratings if players have them, so there could be some Co-Ed matches and matches with mixed age groups. Each player will be scheduled to have multiple matches, usually round robins, playing 2 or 3 matches and using the short set format. Any event involving 11 to 12 years of age players will use green balls. Older age groups will use yellow balls.

Junior Team Tennis

The USTA Missouri Valley Junior Team Tennis program offers junior players the opportunity to join teammates and compete together. Leagues match players of similar age and ability using

NET Tournaments

A NET tournament is a Non-Elimination Tournament. These are half day events for ages 10 and under to 18 years. Junior NET events will offer beginning level of junior play to those who enter. The goal of NET events is to make this a fun and enjoyable experience for players.

the Junior National Tennis Rating Program. No matter your age, there’s a league for you! Throughout the five-state area, leagues are happening in the winter, spring, summer and fall! The competition culminates with the USTA Missouri Valley Junior Team Tennis Section Championship held annually at the end of July, where the champions earn a berth to the USTA Junior Team Tennis National Championships.

Serving Up Net Generation in Schools

By Andrew Robinson

First Serve OKC in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma has laid the foundation to create a robust network of after school tennis providers through Net Generation. Already, the NJTL chapter has partnered with seven area elementary schools and six high schools to become an afterschool tennis provider which means supporting the school through equipment, curriculum needs, or even offering transportation to at-risk students to get them to the Oklahoma City Tennis Center where First Serve OKC is based. The program is also beginning to offer scholarships to the NJTL’s summer programming. More than a dozen schools have completed partner agreements within the USTA Missouri Valley. The focus of this program is to create partnerships between schools, local School Partners and USTA section or district to give students the opportunity to learn, play, and enjoy the game of tennis. By signing up for the program, the school, School Partner and USTA section or district agree to partner with the United States Tennis Association to support Net Generation at the School. With continued support through Net Generation resources, Emmy Tigert, executive director, believes there’s more opportunity on the horizon.

4

“The Net Generation curriculum has been a game changer for what we can provide to our volunteer coaches,” she said. “I think what’s been a challenge for coaches is understanding the skill set. But the curriculum pretty much provides a framework for introducing tennis and character building.” Tigert has taken an approach of starting small by partnering with a few schools rather than trying to partner with an entire district, a tactic she says is key. “You have to have big goals but you have to start small,” she said. “You have a lot of credibility through the USTA and if you can just build a relationship one school at a time, there’s a domino effect.” At each of its partner schools, First Serve OKC is now the after-school tennis provider, but its influence goes far beyond teaching tennis. The organization works with schools to identify the highest-risk students and work with a volunteer to pick that child up and bring him or her to the Oklahoma Tennis Center for additional programming. Tigert’s early observations of the resources Net Generation provides has been positive. From the background checks to the mobile app offering curriculum and insturctional tips, Net Generation is giving First Serve OKC resources for its organization it hasn’t had in the past.

SPRING SERVE 2018

One of Tigert’s biggest takeaways she offers to other organizations is to not fear the time commitment surrounding Net Generation’s required background checks. The objective of Net Generation is to provide a safe connection to the sport, as well as a platform to celebrate individuality and self-expression. To ensure a safe environment, all Net Generation providers – including coaches, teachers, players and volunteers – must first go through a Safe Play Program, which involves a three-step process, including a background check, by registering on NetGeneration.com. With the USTA’s focus on childhood safety, this system will be the first of its kind in the sports landscape to require all providers to submit to a comprehensive screening and education program. “Volunteers have been really excited about the Net Generation process,” she said. “To them, it’s something they can add to their resume. Programs like mine rely heavily on volunteers. We approach it with a win-win attitude and that translates to volunteers who are excited about it, too.”

Spotlight on...

USTA Net Generation Ambassador Elliott McDermed By Andrew Robinson

There’s zero question that this year will be the year of Net Generation. The USTA’s new youth brand will officially roll out its consumer-facing features later this year. You’ve likely already seen the signage, whether it be around the grounds at the US Open, or in a local facility. Providers have been preparing for the launch for months, and two ambassadors for the program in the USTA Missouri Valley are embracing Net Generation to its core. Elliott McDermed, owner and director at Kansas City United Tennis, said he believes the resources Net Generation will provide and the ease at which players and parents will be able to find opportunities to play will make a big difference. “It’s a bit like Uber,” McDermed said. “It’s like matching up the drivers with the riders and that’s what I hope it does.”

Already, more than 360 providers within the USTA Missouri Valley have registered with Net Generation, which gives them the opportunity to post programs, camps, leagues within the website, NETGENERATION.com. McDermed is hopeful that number continues to grow as providers realize the benefits Net Generation will offer. “First, I think every pro or every program should look at what they do and ask themselves if not getting involved is going to hurt their program. And then ask ‘is getting involved going to hurt their program’ or is getting involved going to improve their program?” McDermed said. “When you start to ask those questions and you start to explain that the upside is this is where the future of american tennis going and the downside is there’s a good possibility you’re going to be left behind.”

The USTA Missouri Valley hosted a training for certified teaching pros in December to review the curriculum and offer best practices for teaching. McDermed has been involved for over a year as an ambassador for the program with goals of working with providers to grow Net Generation in the USTA Missouri Valley. “I think the consumer being able to find quality programs and quality instruction in their area is going to make a big difference.” Stay tuned for the summer issue of Serve magazine when we feature our second Net Generation Ambassador, Mike Woody.

USTA Missouri Valley hosted an on-court Net Generation training at its Annual Conference in December 2017.

Consumers will be able to use search functions to find the program that’s right for them, whether it’s beginner lessons, Junior Team Tennis opportunities, or a one-week summer camp. Providers will also be armed with a specific curriculum to make sure players are developing correctly and learning the skills they need to continue to develop. “The work that went into putting that curriculum together is coming form some very experienced people who have taken time and research to make sure this is really the best resource out there,” McDermed said.

“It’s a bit like Uber. It’s like matching up the drivers with the riders and that’s what I hope it does.” SPRING SERVE 2018

Adult Tournaments By Andrew Robinson For 2018, the USTA is launching a new national adult tournament that leverages the NTRP rating system as a way to create level-based competition at the 18 & over and 50 & over age groups. NTRP national champions will be crowned in men’s and women’s singles and doubles at the 3.5, 4.0 and 4.5 levels in both 18 & over and 50 & over age groups. The NTRP National Championships will be held in the spring of 2018. One player in each division, from each section will be invited to attend. This is a tournament, not a USTA League Section Championship. So how do you qualify, if you are a tournament player in the USTA Missouri Valley? • The player that holds the #1 position on the 2018 final ranking lists for the USTA Missouri Valley, for each division will be invited to attend as the section representative. • To be listed on the USTA Missouri Valley ranking lists a player must play at least one section level adult tournament in each of the divisions they would like to be ranked. • Players may count a section-level and any other two tournaments they have played in the same division, in which they received points, to be included in the final rankings for 2017. The more you play, the better your chances at earning more points. The farther you make it through a tournament, the more points you earn! • Go to tennislink.usta.com/tournaments to check to see if you are currently ranked. Use the "Players Ranking Search." If you do not play tournaments, you will not be ranked. Check our Facebook page throughout the year for updated standings as players work to qualify for the NTRP National Championships. Visit tennislink.usta.com for more information or to register for an event.

NET NOTES - NEWS NEAR YOU Haugness & Platt Receive Tennis Industry Magazine Awards Larry Haugness, USTA Missouri Valley President, was named Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Member of the Year, while Mark Platt received the Youth Tennis Provider of the Year award. Haugness of Springfield, Mo., has a passion for not only making players better on the court, but also for making the teachers who train those players better. It’s for such dedication and service that Haugness is named TI’s 2017 PTR Member of the Year. Haugness has been a PTR member since 1989 and continues to be a PTR National Workshop clinician. “The PTR is Larry Haugness Mark Platt so personable and family-oriented, which makes it easy to stay involved with the organization,” he says. Haugness, who currently serves as president of the USTA Missouri Valley section, retired this year as community tennis director at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield. However, he continues to work toward leading other teaching pros to reach their potential. “Larry has played a key role in the growth of tennis," says PTR CEO Dan Santorum.” He has a tremendous amount of passion for this sport.” St. Louis, Mo., has a rich tennis history, but no one may be more successful in getting people on the court than Mark Platt. It’s Platt’s dedication to teaching youngsters that makes him TI’s 2017 Youth Tennis Provider of the Year. Platt created Beginner’s World Tennis in St. Louis in 1984 to encourage new tennis players and promote team tennis leagues and community events. More than 30 years later, it’s not uncommon for more than 1,000 people of all ages to participate in Platt’s programs and events at over 25 facilities throughout the St. Louis area. This summer, Platt’s programs will include at least 10 Junior Team Tennis squads. Beginner’s World Tennis has a staff of 10 who teach tennis and run all types of programming.
