As part of our ongoing promotion of the benefits of tennis, this fall we’re looking at the social and educational benefits associated with playing tennis. Across all ages, tennis provides an incredible social outlet that not all sports can match. From young children who gain social skills and confidence to older adults who are able to stay mentally sharp in part due to their on-court relationships, tennis truly does offer benefits for a lifetime. For children who are still in school, the social and educational benefits really go hand in hand. Studies show that 48 percent of youth who play tennis have an “A” average and spend more time studying. Much of this can be directly attributed to skills they learn on the court. Tennis increases brain power, alertness and tactical thinking. For young players this helps them perform better in the classroom. This benefit tends to be most prevalent in middle school students. “Middle school is when that social adjustment is the biggest contributor to academic adjustment, actually,” said Leslie Echols, USTA Missouri Executive Director and Associate Professor of Developmental Psychology at Missouri State University. Outside of the classroom tennis also helps kids improve their social skills. The etiquette and self-policing of tennis helps kids work on social interactions in a competitive environment. Tennis players learn from an early age how to problem solve and regulate their emotions on a court. These skills carry forward throughout their lives. “I think just the way the sport is played lends itself very well to opportunities to practice social skills,” Echols said. usta.com/ustamissourivalley

“Those exchanges in between games, when you’re changing sides of the court, those opportunities to practice your conflict resolution. Those are all skills that really are important for lifelong social adjustment.” On top of social skills, tennis also helps to build strong relationships. Tennis is the sport of a lifetime, but it also helps build friendships for a lifetime. The camaraderie that can be found across all levels of tennis is a special element that helps set tennis apart from other sports. This is very apparent when it comes to adults. Tennis is a great way for adults to maintain relationships and have a healthy social outlet. With offerings like tournament or USTA Leagues, adults have options to keep them active and social with their peers. These social interactions become especially important in older adults. “Well, honestly, I would say the social benefits of tennis are most important in older adulthood because that’s when the social and the cognitive, and these other aspects of our beings are so interconnected and really make a difference for lifespan and quality of life,” Echols said. She says that cognitive function in older adults is closely tied to loneliness and social interactions. So as they’re able to have more social interaction on the courts, it actually helps people live longer and maintain higher cognitive functions. According to the Mayo Clinic, tennis adds nearly 10 years to a person’s life. NET NOTES ADAPTIVE DOUBLES USTA Missouri Valley recently hosted the Adaptive Doubles Section Championships in Lincoln. Doubles teams from around the section showed up to battle for a trip to the National Championships. DIVERSITY DAY IN EDWARDSVILLE One of the highlights of the Edwardsville Pro Circuit every year is the Diversity Day celebration. Dave Lipe is incredibly passionate about getting young players from diverse backgrounds involved in the sport of tennis. Aside from getting kids on the court, one of the highlights for them is getting to see former University of Illinois and current professional player Kweisi Kenyatte. Kenyatte makes sure to come back for diversity day as often as possible to hit with the kids and talk to them about tennis. Young players from Community Tennis Associations and National Junior Tennis & Learning Centers around the St. Louis area came out to the event with their programs. View all the event photos here. With the assistance of tournament players and grants courtesy of USTA National, USTA Missouri Valley and USTA St. Louis, Tournament Director Mark Zolman said this year’s event was an “upgrade” from 2022. The tourney again featured both singles and doubles for A, B, C and D coed divisions as well as singles and doubles for the quad open and 18U A coed flights. L2 ST. LOUIS WHEELCHAIR INDOOR TOURNAMENT After a successful inaugural showing last year, the St. Louis Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Championships returned on August 4-6. The tourney — bumped up from a Level 4 in 2022 to a Level 2 this go-round — again took place at Chesterfield Athletic Club. This year’s tournament featured nearly 30 players, up from 18 last year.

NET NOTES NJTL GRANTS The USTA Foundation, the charitable arm of the United States Tennis Association Incorporated, (USTA) has awarded grants totaling more than $4 million to 148 National Junior Tennis & Learning chapters (NJTL), including nine in USTA Missouri Valley. The grants are designated to support under-resourced youth through tennis and education programs designed to give them the opportunity to improve their health, build their character and help them achieve academic excellence. Targeted towards community programs designated by the selected chapters, these grants are anticipated to support more than youth participants across the section. HALEY WAGGONER FROM NEBRASKA Earlier this summer, 32-year old Haley Waggoner of Lincoln was inducted into the Special Olympics Nebraska Hall of Fame for her work as an athlete and leader in the organization. Learn more about Haley and her career here.

BLOOD DRIVE USTA Missouri Valley staff recently collaborated with the American Red Cross to conduct a blood drive. We worked together to give back to the community in a truly life-changing way since each donation we collected can help save more than one life and will touch the lives of so many more. The American Red Cross Blood Drive was held on Monday, July 24 from 12 - 4 p.m. the USTA Missouri Valley office in Prairie Village, Kansas. All donors received gifts that included $20 off of a USTA League registration, USTA Missouri Valley gifts, a Discovery Channel Shark Week T-shirt and discounts from area businesses. Free used tennis balls were also available for donors to take home to their pets. 22 units of blood were donated-a donation that could help patients receiving treatment for cancer or blood disorders, those undergoing transplant surgery, mothers suffering from complications from childbirth, and premature babies. The American Red Cross continues to see a concerning trend – blood donations are being sent to hospitals faster than they are coming in. NET NOTES JUNIOR TEAM TENNIS SECTION CHAMPIONSHIPS The 2023 USTA Missouri Valley Junior Team Tennis Section Championships concluded July 19, 2023 at Edmond Center Court in Edmond, OK. Oklahoma teams had strong showings across the board, taking the top two spots in both the 18U and 14U age divisions. Edmond Center Court took the crown in the 18U division, while Tucker Tennis Academy emerged victorious in the 14U division. Read the full recap and check out the event photos here. NEW JTT DISTRICT COORDINATORS FOR IOWA AND MISSOURI USTA Missouri Valley recently hired two new staff members to run Junior Team Tennis Programming in USTA Iowa and USTA Missouri. These new positions will be very active in engaging with local facilities and coaches to help provide more JTT programs for junior players in those districts. Astrid Araya took the USTA Iowa position and Kseniya Zonova takes over for USTA Missouri. We’re very excited to have both on board. TOC INVITE RESULTS 16 collegiate club-tennis teams from across USTA Missouri Valley took a break from the classroom and took to the courts September 29-October 1 in Topeka to vie for USTA Missouri Valley Tennis On Campus top honors. For the third year in a row, the event was held at Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka, Kansas. After two long days of tennis, teamwork, and some schoolwork, the 2023 USTA Missouri Valley Tennis On Campus Fall Invite is officially ‘in the books’. The nearly 140 players displayed some amazing competition, camaraderie, and team spirit. The championship bracket matched St. Louis University against Iowa State University for the overall title. The Billikens knocked off the Cyclones to remain undefeated for the weekend and take home the top prize. Rounding out the championship bracket were in-state rivals University of Kansas and Kansas State University, with the Jayhawks (A-team) earning 3rd place honors by defeating, the Wildcats. The Team-Spirit Award for the most spirited team throughout the weekend went to Truman State University Bulldogs for the second year in a row.
