Tennis is surging.
Once again, tennis is booming across the country and here in USTA Missouri Valley. After the surge in popularity in 2020, tennis continues to be a hot activity for athletes within our five-state area. According to the Physical Activity Council’s (PAC) participation report produced by Sports Marketing Surveys, which monitors more than 120 different sports and activities, more than 22.6 million people took to the courts nationwide in 2021, up approximately 1 million players and 4.5% from 2020.
WHAT ABOUT OUR SECTION?
One Million Players almost
Across USTA Missouri Valley, there were nearly 1 million tennis participants in 2021. The PAC study considers people ages six and up to be possible participants. Although we did see a slight dip from 2020, this still marks a 1.1% increase over the prepandemic numbers in 2019 and a 1% five-year increase.
Overall, about 5.7% (or 1 in every 18 people) of the eligible population (over 16 million people) played tennis in 2021.
4%
For reference, USTA Missouri Valley accounts for about 5% of the total U.S. population and about 4% of total U.S. tennis players. Not bad!

USTA Missouri Valley wants everyone to get into the game! Check out the calendar on the next page to find out how you can make tennis the sport you play for a lifetime.
SO WHO’S PLAYING? Men accounted for the majority of players in USTA Missouri Valley in 2021. 58% of our section’s players were male, while 42% were female. A little more than one-quarter of the tennis population were junior players, with 26% of the players falling in the 6-17 age range. An additional 30% of players were aged 18-34. USTA Missouri Valley actually skews slightly younger than the national average, so the future of tennis is in good shape in our section! Rounding out the age demographics, 32% of players were aged 35-54 and players 55 and older made up 11% of our players. Tennis truly is a sport for all ages! The study also found that 67% of players identified as Caucasian, down from 70% in 2020. The Hispanic/Latino population saw a huge jump in participation, from 11% in 2020 all the way up to 21% in 2021. African Americans accounted for 8% of players in our section and Asian American/Pacific Islanders made up 3% of the playing population. USTA Missouri Valley also tends to have more Hispanic/Latino and Asian players than the national average.

HOW MUCH IS EVERYONE PLAYING? AND WHERE? According to the study, 40% of players in USTA Missouri Valley are core players, or players who play 10 times or more in a year. That means that 60% of our players are considered casual players and play anywhere from one to nine times per year. The average number of days played for players in our section was 17 days last year. Our players played all over the place in 2021, but the most popular place was at a public park, accounting for 50% of all play. Other popular places to play were at school/college (19%), recreational or community center (11%), private clubs (8%) and country clubs (5%). Home was also a popular (not to mention convenient) place to play with 5% of play being at apartments/condos and even 2% coming at private residences. Just more proof that tennis is everywhere!
SO WHAT’S NEXT? Even with all these encouraging numbers and trends, there is still plenty of opportunity for growth across our section. According to the study, 5.5% of non-players expressed “high interest” in playing tennis today. That comes out to be around 870,000 people. And with a current playing population of about 960,000 in our section, we could nearly double in players! A huge part of that interest is thanks to the work that all of you are doing to promote tennis in your areas and get friends and family involved in the game you love. Let’s keep up the great work and keep sharing the joys of tennis with others. usta.com/ustamissourivalley

Tara & Darrel
Snyder Tara Snyder of Wichita has seen the upper reaches of tennis success. As a former junior powerhouse and WTA-ranked player who’s squared off against some of the heaviest hitters in the sport, she’s seen and experienced how far tenacity and dedication–as well as positive coaching–can take someone.
Tara’s first experience playing tennis was with her brother, Darren, and her father, Darrel, who would later become her coach. Darrel was a former high-level player himself, and as Tara’s father, he was able to walk that fine line between being an effective coach while also being “Dad.” He knew Tara’s style of play, how she reacted emotionally to wins and losses, and what tweaks needed to be made to her game to overcome any errors. But during those teenage years, when many teenagers begin to balk at their parents’ guidance, Tara’s father let her work with other coaches to see if their coaching styles would be a better fit–and it turned out to be what she needed to take her game to the next level. Working with a variety of coaches and playing against others with different skill sets can help mold you into a more complete player, as Tara found out. Because her father was able to see Tara the person and Tara the tennis player, and because he was able to take a step back and let his daughter thrive by working with other coaches who fit her needs at the time, it made a tremendous impact on Tara and how she now views the effect of positive coaching. Now a coach herself, Tara makes it a point to invest in the lives of her players. As many junior athletes can attest, they are often seen as machines expected to work hard and play even harder, which can take a toll on one’s mental health.

on Positive Coaching
By: Sydney Hamilton
Tara believes, much as her father did, in treating the player as a person–asking about their day, about their social lives, how their family is doing, and simply spending quality time with them before and after practices and matches–helps them feel like they’re seen, heard, and cared about, both on and off the court. And for junior players finding their footing in a competitive sport like tennis, this is crucial for them. It helps them learn to approach situations with optimism, which is, in turn, a boon for good sportsmanship and improved mental well-being.
“THAT’S THE POWER OF
POSITIVE
COACHING.” Click here to read the full story and for more information about positive coaching.

NET NOTES WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY (ST. LOUIS) TAKES 2022 TENNIS ON CAMPUS SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP The United States Tennis Association Missouri Valley Tennis On Campus Section Championship returned as a major success in 2022 after a one-year hiatus. Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo. hosted the event that saw 14 college club-tennis teams compete from March 3-5. Washington University stormed back from an early deficit to beat the University of Iowa in the finals to claim yet another title, the sixth in school history. Iowa State University earned a hard-fought victory over the University of Kansas in the third-place match, which proved important as the top three finishers all advanced to the Tennis On Campus National Championships in April. In addition to some great tennis, teams also exhibited wonderful sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the weekend. Players were constantly cheering on their teammates when they weren’t playing matches of their own, but Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville earned the team spirit award for their wonderful display of camaraderie and team support. No matter the results of matches, the team was constantly encouraging and cheering on their teammates throughout the tournament.

NET NOTES NICK TAYLOR WINS BRAD PARKS AWARD The awards just keep rolling in for Wichita’s Nick Taylor. In March, Taylor was honored with the Brad Parks Award at the USTA Annual Meeting. This award is given annually to recognize an individual’s outstanding contributions to the sport of wheelchair tennis. “[The award] is the biggest award in the sport of wheelchair tennis in the U.S. by far; one of a few that USTA National gives out, which is a massive honor,” said Taylor. “It means so much to me because, I guess to me, it means I did something right. I always felt it extremely important to give back to the sport. It completely changed my life, so to give that to other people [is wonderful].” Taylor, one of the most decorated tennis players in history, retired from tennis in 2021.

Summer Team Tournaments ARE BACK! The USTA is happy to announce that the USTA National Junior Tournament team events are returning this summer and will be held at the end of July. Due to a number of factors, the USTA Board of Directors has relaxed Regulation II.D. regarding the sanctioning of USTA Team Championships events so that these team events could be reformatted for 2022. The details of these new team tournaments are as follows. The 2022 USTA Zone Team Championships, scheduled for July 28-31, will be held for the 12s and 14s age divisions only and will be awarded Level 2 ranking points. Historically, the teams sent to Zonals have been teams of six (6) boys and six (6) girls composed of players from the same Section. This year, instead of having teams of players from the same Section, the players who are accepted into the tournament will be waterfalled onto teams based on their USTA National Standing. Players who participate in this event will be guaranteed four (4) singles and four (4) doubles matches over the course of the tournament. The locations for these tournaments will be announced at a later date. For the 16s and 18s age divisions, a new Level 1 Team Championship, called “The Battle of the Sections” will take place in locations near Kalamazoo, MI and San Diego, CA as a lead-in for the USTA National Championships. The dates are July 31 - August 3. Each USTA Sectional Association will send a team composed of eight (8) players, four (4) of which will be 16-and-under players and the remaining four (4) will be 18-and-under players. Together, these eight players will play as one team and participate in four (4) singles and (4) doubles matches over the course of the tournament. The USTA is excited to see the return of Level 1 and Level 2 Team Tournaments to the calendar this year!
