MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 2018 saw the completion of the Strategic Vision for the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, home of the US Open. The USTA National Campus continues to build momentum and provide the perfect location for showcasing collegiate matches, national tournaments, Pro Circuit events, and national trainings. We are so fortunate to have such great facilities available to use as we enjoy watching and participating in the sport we love. This year we want to focus on continued communication and education for our communities, providers, and players as we grow opportunities for play. Net Generation continues to add new offerings to attract and engage our youth. We will continue to partner schools with local providers so that young players will have the ability to continue to enjoy our sport after school hours. We will also have a renewed focus on all things adult - from Tennis on Campus, social play, and Cardio Tennis, to our more competitive adult leagues and tournament play. Adult social play will be an easy way to engage new players and welcome back those that “used to play”, building a larger pool of adult players of all ages. We couldn’t continue to grow and achieve these goals without strong leadership to guide us. A huge thanks to our current fabulous and passionate volunteers for continuing to support our communities in growing the game! Our volunteers help steer our direction and fuel our momentum. We have many opportunities for everyone to get involved and help shape the future of tennis in USTA Missouri Valley. Please contact your local CTA, NJTL or district office to find to find out how you can get involved. If you are already serving, please be intentional about identifying future volunteers in your community and help them get connected. You may also contact the section office and we can help you and your recruits find opportunities in your local tennis community.

We celebrate the wonderful successes and moments of 2018 and look forward to an exciting and rewarding 2019!

The following award was also presented, but is not pictured: Junior Recreational Player of the Year - Grant Dahl (St. Louis, Missouri) Ken D. Brown never set his sights on becoming a successful high school and college tennis coach growing up, but a college course changed that. Brown, after taking two tennis coaching courses at Fort Hays State, began teaching at Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas, where he was asked to resurrect the tennis team in 1968. He coached the college teams for 23 years, before becoming the head boys’ and girls’ coach at Independence High School in 1992, where he won state championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He coached there until 2014, and has directed the city recreation program for 35 years. He’s organized Junior Team Tennis, and other USTA youth programming since 1983.

2018 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Fred Johnson had an ability to break barriers when it came to getting diverse populations onto the tennis court. A protégé of Arthur Ashe, he was a manager and instructor for five sites of the Ashe-Bolliteri tennis program between 1990 and 1993, finding creative ways to promote the sport to as many people L-R: Brenda Johnson on behalf of Fred Johnson, Ken D. Brown, Pat as possible. Johnson joined the USTA Missouri Valley staff in Purcell and Kim Reser. Not pictured: Mark Platt 1996 as its diversity manager, and was an advocate for diversity and inclusion. He was the genesis behind “Tennis in the hood,” an outreach program which introduced tennis to over 40,000 kids in 11 different cities in the USTA Missouri Valley’s five-state area. That blueprint for success was transitioned into Tennis Block Parties, Rock N Rally’s and Tennis in the Neighborhood programs by the USTA. Mark Platt got his start in tennis by taking lessons from fellow USTA Missouri Valley Hall of Famer, Earl Buchholz Sr., in the 1960s. Platt started teaching tennis and directing the free University City tennis program in 1976. Almost a decade later, Platt started Beginner’s World Tennis in 1984. The program, which provides an all-encompassing program specifically geared to the beginner tennis player. Today, Platt has a staff of 10 assisting at 25 sites across St. Louis with over 10,000 participants annually. In 2002, Platt was named a Grassroots Champion of Tennis by Tennis Industry Magazine, and in 2016 the magazine named him a Community Tennis Local Hero. Platt has also been honored by the USTA. In 2004, he was the Eve Kraft Community Service Award winner, and in 2017 he was named the Janet Lauer USTA Junior Team Tennis National Organizer. Patricia Purcell has excelled as a player and organizer throughout her career. Purcell started playing the USTA Missouri Valley junior circuit in 1966 and became the no. 1 ranked player in St. Louis and the Missouri Valley. She went on to play at Washington University in St. Louis for four seasons, the first two of which were with the men’s team. She remained an active adult player through the 1980s before taking a 20-year hiatus from playing. When she returned, she found success. She’s won six USTA Gold Balls, and has been a member of two national USTA Cup Teams, the Maureen Connolly Cup in 2013 and Alice Marble Cup in 2017, both of which won its respective events. She finished 2017 as the no. 4 ranked player in singles and doubles in the USTA Women’s 60s rankings. Most recently, Purcell was a member of the 2018 Alice Marble Cup Team which competed in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Seniors World Team Championships. She was named the USTA Missouri Valley Player of the Year in 2016 and was also inducted into the USTA St. Louis Tennis Hall of Fame in 2016. Kim Reser learned to play tennis in Marshall, Missouri, before a long career of coaching and service within the game. Reser played collegiately at William Jewell University in Liberty, Missouri, before becoming the school’s head women’s coach. She also served as both a staff member and volunteer for the USTA Missouri Valley. She was the director of adult programs and championships for four years, and then spent 25 years as a volunteer including a decade as part of the USTA Missouri Valley’s Board of Directors. She was also a USTA umpire, and a linejudge for Springfield Lasers’ matches, USTA Pro Circuit events and officiated local events. At the national level, Reser has served on the following national committees: USTA Leagues, USTA Parks and USTA Awards. She is currently the Assistant Director of Parks for the Springfield - Greene County Park Board. 11

COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE

YOUTH TENNIS Net Generation is the USTA’s youth (ages 5-18) tennis brand, dedicated to welcoming millions of new players to the game by focusing on empowerment, unity, and play. Through a comprehensive program of adaptable curricula, teaching and learning tools, promotional and communications materials, and player and provider incentives, Net Generation aims to capture the imagination of kids of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels, and bring together parents, coaches, teachers, and volunteers all throughout the country. Net Generation provides a single registration platform for programs across the country and also requires all deliverers to have completed a background screen and an education program for working with minors. Net Generation will always be committed to the safety and wellbeing of all players with an emphasis on building character on and off the court. Net Generation will make tennis approachable, accessible, adaptable & fun. It contains curricula, resources, education & marketing support to help grow the game. The Youth Progression Player Pathway promotes play in red, orange, and green ball events and is structured in a way that will allow young players to remain at the appropriate level until they are granted advancement by way of age, results, or participation. Player’s advancement in orange and green ball is determined by the number of stars and trophies they have earned, which are awarded for playing in Youth Progression tournaments (Smashers), being on a 10 & Under Junior Team Tennis team and/or participation in Team Challenge events. Team Tennis offers girls and boys the opportunity to play on teams in local play opportunities that emphasizes character development, developing skills, play opportunities and fun. The following programs are offered under our USTA Net Generation Team Tennis umbrella: Team Challenge is an introduction to tennis competition offering a low-pressure team environment for children of all ages to develop their skills through level-based play, without an emphasis on instruction or results. Players are expected to drop hit serve from the service line over the net and sustain a modified rally (trapping or bumping). It is designed to be delivered as a single event or a series of up to six events, with the objective of providing a fun and social environment that highlights character and skill development. Team Tournament is an innovative way for children to enjoy tennis competition in a low-pressure team environment. This experience will encourage players of all ages to gain match experience, develop their skills through level-based play, and demonstrate good sportsmanship. Players are expected overarm serve into the appropriate service bo and sustain a hitting rally. It is designed to be delivered as a single event or a series of up to six events, with the objective of providing a fun and social environment that highlights character and skill development. In Junior Team Tennis teams and players are matched by similar age and ability using the Junior National Tennis Rating Program ( JNTRP). Players are expected to be able to serve, rally and score. A league consists of a minimum of two teams in the same division. Junior Tournaments give players the opportunity to advance their game by competing in match play situations against peers with similar skill levels. Competing in junior tournaments will help players learn the skill sets necessary to take their game to the next level – high school, college or the pros. There are many play opportunities available at the district, section and national levels. Junior competition includes events for everyone- from first time competitors to top level tournaments for more experienced competitors. Tournament play offers many different formats that give you multiple opportunities to compete. The round robin, feed-in championships and team events are just a few of the many options. The USTA National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) is a nation-wide network of community tennis organizations seeking to develop the character of young people through tennis and education. The NJTL mission is to reach out to those who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play the sport, while instilling in these young people the values of leadership and academic excellence. The program gives all kids (regardless of income, race, or gender) the opportunity to fully develop their tennis skills so that they can derive a life time of enjoyment from the sport. The NJTL program is a great way for kids to get exercise, make friends, and have fun in a, team-oriented, safe environment. NJTL offers a variety of on and off-court programming, emphasizing educational and life-skill components to enhance overall development. This curriculum is offered at little or no cost to the participant. NJTL chapters are divided into differen’t levels, within the USTA, based on size and programming the chapter is able to provide.

Tennis in Schools is designed to introduce the sport to youth through PE classes and extracurricular activities. Children will learn the basics of tennis in PE class, then play games in afterschool programs. The USTA Missouri Valley can provide free teacher workshops that demonstrate lessons from the Net Generation tennis curriculum which has been vetted and approved by SHAPE America®, the leading organization who sets the national standards for physical education. This curriculum has been developed for teachers with large numbers of students in schools without traditional tennis courts. Register your program in Net Generation and receive FREE school curriculum and resources, plus other additional benefits. Once you are registered in Net Generation, our section staff can help connect you with a School Partner to receive free equipment and help provide your students with continued opportunities in tennis. Schools with a USTA membership may access additional discounted equipment and grants for equipment or to initiate afterschool programming.

ADULT TENNIS Varsity Collegiate Tennis in the United States provides opportunities for thousands of players to continue their tennis careers while also earning a college degree. There are three associations governing collegiate athletics: the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Each association sponsors a season-ending National Championship for its divisions. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) serves as the governing body of collegiate tennis in the United States. The ITA administers a comprehensive calendar of tournaments and events and a far-reaching awards program. The goal of the ITA is to improve the level of intercollegiate tennis competition and the quality of college tennis coaching. The USTA Tennis on Campus program is a natural extension to a college or university’s physical education tennis classes, intramurals/extramurals program or recreational league. USTA Tennis on Campus programs offer students and faculty the chance to compete in a friendly and competitive playing environment. The playing format of USTA Tennis on Campus is designed to be flexible, so that it will work on any campus and incorporate players of all ability levels and teams of all sizes. Beginning players may elect to concentrate more on skill building and the social aspects of tennis, while more advanced players might opt to form a sport club team and compete against nearby schools. Players who choose the more competitive route will have the opportunity to compete against Tennis on Campus teams from not only across the USTA Missouri Valley, but the country as well. This includes university hosted invitationals, the Missouri Valley Fall Invitational and Section Championship, and a National Championship event. This provides a great opportunity for players to compete against and form friendships with competitors from universities across the country. USTA League Tennis is one of the most successful recreational sports programs in the country. Players can make friends and compete not only in matches against players with similar abilities, but also as part of a team. USTA Leagues has more than 24,000 participants in the Missouri Valley and includes more than 930,000 players from all across the nation, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league. In addition to competing locally, you can vie for district, section and even national championships – just as long as your team keeps winning. Players range in age from 18 to 90 (and beyond), so there’s a team for you to play singles, doubles or mixed. Adult Social Leagues are offered throughout the country, and can satisfy your desire for competition while keeping the focus on having fun, meeting new people and hanging out with friends. From “Sets in the City” to 1839 young-adult leagues to mixed doubles and post-match happy hours, there are a variety of play options available.

15

There are many adult and senior tournaments offered at the district and section level. These tournaments are for players of all levels and players can enter to compete in either singles or doubles. These tournaments match players by skill level or age and they are a great way to maintain or improve your tennis skills playing against new competitors who are on your level. You can even play in NTRP Section Qualifying tournaments for your chance to compete at the national level. Find a list of adult and senior tournaments in your area on TennisLink.

COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE

PROFESSIONAL TENNIS The USTA Pro Circuit was formed in 1979 to provide players with an opportunity to gain the professional ranking points they need to compete on the major pro tours. Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2019, it has since grown into the largest developmental tennis circuit in the world, consisting of approximately 100 tournaments and offering nearly $3 million in prize money. Many of today’s top players began their professional tennis careers by competing on the USTA Pro Circuit – Jon Isner, Jack Sock, Madison Keys, and Sloane Stephens, to name a few. In 2019, the USTA Pro Circuit has eight tournaments scheduled in USTA Missouri Valley. This gives our local communities the opportunity to see professional tennis players up close, and to become involved with the tournament activities. Our host sites rely on local tennis enthusiasts to help with many aspects of the tournament. In addition, most host sites provide community involvement events such as clinics run by the players, pro-ams, kids’ days, and more. Join the fun and excitement – find a tournament near you! The Springfield Lasers, the 2018 World TeamTennis Champions, are ready for another great year of tennis! The 2019 season will run from July 14 to August 3, with professional tennis players bringing some of the finest tennis around to our section. The USTA is a minority owner and promotional partner of World TeamTennis. wtt.com SpringfieldLasers.com

OTHER PROGRAMS Diversity and Inclusion Statement: Embracing diversity and encouraging multicultural outreach efforts is essential to achieving the USTA Missouri Valley’s mission to grow the sport of tennis. We are committed to fostering a tennis environment that is more inclusive and inviting to all people. In working to expand the image of tennis, the USTA Missouri Valley is focused on broadening and increasing diverse participation in the sport and serving as a model for all organizations that aspire to successful growth and an inclusive environment. Adaptive Tennis recognizes four main categories of disabilities: 1) Developmentally disabled (learning disabilities, Autism, Down Syndrome, intellectual disabilities). 2) Physically disabled (birth defects, Multiple Sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, Muscular Dystrophy, hearing impaired, stroke, etc.) 3) Consumers of mental health services (psychiatrically disabled, emotionally disturbed). 4) At risk/environmentally disabled (substance abusers, mentally and physically abused, homeless, HIV positive individuals, persons within the juvenile justice system, etc.). For each of these groups, USTA Missouri Valley Adaptive Tennis provides grant money, equipment and resources for specifically-tailored programs that provide fun, fitness and a positive social experience for participants. Regional clinics and instructional programs are held throughout the country. The enjoyment, physical well-being and contact shared by participants have proven to be positive sources of self-esteem, helping open doors to a more positive lifestyle. USTA Adaptive Tennis program works to provide opportunities to all populations to enjoy and realize the benefits of tennis and its life changing opportunities.

Wheelchair Tennis is one of the fastest growing and most challenging of all wheelchair sports. To meet this demand, USTA offers programs geared toward the wheelchair player. Rules are the same as stand-up tennis, except the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces of the ball. USTA Wheelchair Tennis programs provide persons with disabilities the opportunity to share in activities with their peers, whether able-bodied or disabled. Playing USTA Wheelchair Tennis adds to the socialization and normalization of life after sustaining a disabling injury. Proficient wheelchair users can play and actively compete against stand-up players. Learning mobility on the court is exciting and challenging, and helps build strength and cardiovascular ability.

The thousands of public parks in local communities across the U.S. have long been hotbeds for the growth of tennis. Indeed, many of the game’s greatest players got their starts playing in public parks. Recognizing the importance of public parks in the long-term health and growth of the sport, the USTA’s Tennis in the Parks initiative provides resources designed to help establish, grow and sustain tennis programming in public parks across the nation. Tennis In the Parks (TIP) and all associated program resources are free to eligible agencies that are committed to growing and improving tennis programs and infrastructure in their community. Here are some resources available to help you grow the game in your park!

USTA MISSOURI VALLEY RESOURCES USTA Missouri Valley hosts hundreds of tournaments a year and none of them would be possible without the use of officials. If you are interested in becoming an official, there is an on-going program for the recruitment and training of new officials that offers an opportunity for tennis enthusiasts to become involved in a variety of officiating roles. These roles range from overseeing local junior/senior tournaments and collegiate events, to officiating on-court at the US Open. There are numerous volunteer opportunities within the USTA. Volunteers may serve on committees, assist at tournaments and events and assist in many more ways. Every district has different needs and different volunteer opportunities. Whatever your interests or talents, there is definitely a volunteer opportunity for you.

COMMUNITY TENNIS GUIDE

Community Tennis Associations (CTAs) are not-for-profit, volunteer-based organizations supporting programs that grow the game of tennis. They are located in towns across the section and are great entry points if you’re looking to get started in the game, to play more often or to give back to our lifetime sport. First and foremost, CTAs work to coordinate and maintain tennis programs and services, guaranteeing that they are open and accessible to everyone. Those who run CTAs are tennis enthusiasts who act as advocates, program administrators, promoters or fundraisers – and sometimes as all of these things at once. Community Tennis Associations partner with their communities to help grow tennis at the local level. Some benefits available to CTAs include:

Coaching: You’ve already got the love for the game. We’ll give you the ideas, activities and tools you need to help your students improve their games and you advance your programs. Players and aspiring players turn to coaches to learn the basics of tennis, refine their swings, fine-tune their serves and advance their skills as they continue their development and personal pursuito f our lifetime sport. Visit USTA.com and click on the Coach tab for resources, training and professional associations. Grants: Tennis opportunities at the most grassroots level are critical to keeping the sport vibrant and growing. USTA and USTA Missouri Valley offer a variety of grants to help grow the game of tennis in many ways. The Section offers two different section grants to tennis providers across its five-state area. Our Serving Up Tennis grant is intended to assist not-for-profit organizations in initiating or expanding their tennis programming activities, and our Grow the Game grant provides funding for USTA Member providers that do not fall under the not-for-profit status to help initiate or expand community tennis activities. Connect with your Tennis Service Representative (TSR) to learn about available grants in your program area. Madam President

By Andrew Robinson

Lisa Minihan of Edmond, Oklahoma, is the new USTA Missouri Valley president. Minihan will serve a two-year term and oversee the section’s efforts to continue to grow the game. We recently sat down with Minihan to get to know her with five fast questions for her. How did you first get your start in tennis? I first got my start in tennis because my father was a tennis coach, so I was literally born into the sport. I have photos of me with a tennis racket in my hands before I could even walk. What's your greatest tennis accomplishment? I'm not sure it's my greatest tennis accomplishment, but the one I appreciate the most is the Blue Ribbon Tournament Director award because it was an award for doing something that I love to do. Why is tennis so important to you and your family? Tennis has been really important to our family because it has created such a great quality of life. With my husband and I both working in the industry, we were allowed to work full time and still be there for all of our kids' activities. They grew up right alongside us in the pro shop, ringing up customers and entering tournament scores. Plus, we have also really appreciated the tennis centered occasions we have gone on such as the U.S. Open and the International Tennis Hall of Fame. As President, what's your biggest priority? I'm really happy with the direction the section is going right now. With this time of great positive growth and successes for the Missouri Valley, I really want to spend the next two years working on opportunities to review our policies and our processes, and continue to get our organization set for the future. One of my biggest priorities is recruiting new volunteers for leadership. What’s your biggest tennis bucket list item?

Minihan’s family was named 2018 USTA Missouri Valley Tennis Family of the Year. She is pictured with her husband David and their daughters, Chloe and Aspen.

My family and I have really enjoyed going to the U.S. Open in the past few years, and I think all of us would love to go to any of the other Grand Slams.

Challenge Accepted By Andrew Robinson

A new program from the USTA is providing promising results when it comes to getting youth players on the court in a noncompetitive setting. After a pilot program in 2018, Team Challenges and Team Events are officially part of USTA programs in 2019. Mike Saniuk, Director of Tennis at Miracle Hills Tennis Center in Omaha, Nebraska, was on board early with the program and saw the immediate success. Team Challenges are an introduction to tennis competition offering a low-pressure team environment for children of all ages to develop their skills through level-based play, without an emphasis on instruction or results. It is designed to be delivered as a single event or a series of up to six events, with the objective of providing a fun and social environment that highlights character and skill development. Team challenges can be played with red, orange or green tennis balls. Too often young players find themselves taking lesson after lesson with little opportunity to go out and just play whether it’s in a competitive setting or not, Saniuk said. But that changes with Team Challenges. “It’s more of a social atmosphere,” he said. “It’s rally based, they can just go out and play the game. Instead of learning proper technique in a clinic setting, it’s a play opportunity to use what they’ve been learning.”

4

Saniuk bought in last year when the USTA was piloting the program, and this year he expects his facility will host over 100 of the one-hour Team Challenge events. He’s found kids are more engaged during the events than they are during lessons and parents couldn’t be happier as well. The USTA is also introducing Team Tournaments this year, which are up to a half day. A team match consists of one singles and one doubles played simultaneously with substitutions. Team scores are tracked and the winning team is recognized at the end of the event. “The biggest benefit in my eyes is giving them a chance to play,” Saniuk said. “A lot of facilities will clinic, clinic, clinic and try to increase revenue. They forget kids want a chance to play and this fits perfectly and really grows the game from a playing standpoint.” Saniuk looks forward to continuing to work with the USTA, and Omaha Tennis Association to grow the popularity of the events within the area and encourages other providers to implement the events into their facilities.

“I’d say it’s a no-brainer, If you offer kids a chance to play, they will play. It’s our job to give them that opportunity. ”

Spotlight on... Drawing on Experience By Andrew Robinson

USTA Missouri Valley assists in running hundreds of junior tournaments over the course of a year and none of them would be possible without tournament directors. Across the section, there are dedicated volunteers who spend countless hours and weekends working to make sure each tournament is organized and well-run. The USTA Missouri Valley is continuing to increase the number of tournament directors and in 2018 offered a tournament director mentoring program. Three tournament directors, Lisa Minihan, Kevin Heim and Carobeth Kelly, completed the program offering guidance and mentorship to tournament directors during much of 2018.

Did you have a mentor when you first started as a TD? Heim: Yes, I did have a couple mentors when I first began as a tournament director. Jeff Shock and Curt Smith were really helpful with me to learn the ropes to being a tournament director. Kelly: I really didn’t have a mentor, and my only experience with tennis was adult league play. So I had to learn about how to run Junior tournaments on my own. Kevin Heim Lincoln, Nebraska

They offered their expertise and perspective on dealing with customers, the technical side of running and tournament as well as assisting their mentees with learning the rules and regulations. We recently sat down with each of these dedicated tournament directors to learn more about why they enjoy running tournaments and how rewarding it can be. How long have you been running tournaments? Heim: I’ve been running tournaments since approximately 2010.

Carobeth Kelly St. Louis, Missouri

Kelly: I started running tournaments in 2010, when I opened a new indoor tennis club. And by necessity to create business for the tennis club, I learned to run tournaments. Minihan: I’m not sure exactly, but I believe I have been running tournaments about 17 to 18 years. Lisa Minihan Edmond, Oklahoma 6

SPRING SERVE 2019

Minihan: I did actually have a mentor when I first started as a tournament director. My husband had been running tournaments for several years before me and he got thrown in the fire without a mentor and kind of went through the growing pains of learning the ropes. And I was very lucky to have him with me when I started. Why did you decide to be a tournament director mentor? Heim: I chose to be a tournament director mentor because I see the importance of running more tournaments. We need more tournament directors and we need more tournament officials. And this was just a natural progression in that. Kelly: I believe in teaching others, and I feel like in St. Louis the number of tournament directors has declined over the years, so, to bring in new life to the program and ensure that there are tournament directors going forward, I feel like we should be training someone new every year. Minihan: I decided to be a part of the tournament director mentor program because this is an idea that has been thrown around USTA at all levels about creating a program. I was so excited to see Nikki Chambers really take on this project and create this program. I think it says a lot about her and her section when it comes to leadership and innovation.

What’s the most rewarding part about being a tournament director? Heim: The most rewarding part about being a tournament director is the interaction with the kids and the parents. The adults, if it’s an adult tournament. And really just providing that play opportunity for them. We don’t have a lot of play opportunities. It’s usually a lot of instruction or recreational play, so to have that, be able to provide that platform for them to compete against new people and just to meet others is very rewarding. Kelly: I enjoy teaching people, and I feel like there are people who love tennis and can give back to tennis, but they do need, you know, some help in learning the process, and I can make it easier for them than what I went through. I enjoy organizing tournaments and seeing the kids grow up and get better. I enjoy communicating and looking at it from the perspective of the parent as well as the player, so I find it very rewarding. Minihan: The most rewarding part about being a tournament director for me is running junior tournaments. I especially love it when I have kids at my tournament that are either having their very first tournament experience in the junior system or maybe they’re having the very last tournament before they go on to college. As far as the mentor program, what did you enjoy the most about being a mentor? Heim: What I enjoyed the most about being the tournament director mentor, was again, creating the relationship with Kaitlin Roselius, who was my mentee, she’s young, she’s a great person. It’s just fun being around someone with that energy and getting involved, who wants to give back to the game.

Minihan: What I enjoyed most about the tournament director mentor program was really at the end. All the mentees are required or asked to run their own tournaments towards the end of the program, and my mentee ran his this past October. Just seeing the positive feedback that he got in the great tournament evaluations made it fun to see the results of the work we had done. What advice would you give to someone considering being a tournament director? Heim: The advice that I would give someone who is wanting to become a tournament director, would be to reach out to someone who’s currently a tournament director first and really just, I think it has to be the right fit. It’s not for everyone, but the people it is for, I think can really thrive in that environment. And so just going over what some of the things are that are required to be a tournament director. And whether it be a social skill, organizational skill, and just making sure that you are able to share the message of what the expectations are in the tournament. Kelly: If they are an organized person, and enjoy watching tennis, and helping others enjoy the tennis sport, tennis, then I would encourage them to do it. Minihan: Probably the best advice I have for a new tournament director would just be communicate with everyone. Communicate with your staff, with your customers, with the district or the section. And I always make sure I have Starbucks!

Kelly: You know, you can help someone learn something faster than you can learn it on your own. And so, again, by helping them learn it as opposed to letting them struggle, I feel like it’s a smoother process, and they end up feeling a lot more comfortable.

If you’d like to participate in the Mentorship Program, either as a mentor or mentee, contact Nikki Chambers at 913-322-4832 or chambers@movalley.usta.com.
