Throughout much of western agricultural history, farms and ranches were relatively small, self-sustaining, diversified operations where most, if not all, needs could be met by an individual and a few neighbors. Modern advances in transportation, technology, and communication have allowed farms and ranches to become larger and more specialized. Agricultural commodities that were previously produced and consumed on-site, or within a local area, are now transported to other states and even other countries. Local agricultural producers also purchase products from a variety of distant sources. This high degree of commodity exchange between operations within the U.S. and the world creates a highly efficient mechanism for long-distance weed dispersal. No longer are farms and ranches exposed only to weeds from their local area, but are subject to invasion by non-native species from around the globe.
