Years of planning and persistence paid dividends Aug. 24 when a ribboncutting ceremony officially opened the new UT Martin Somerville Center in Fayette County. Elected and university officials and guests gathered at the center’s front entrance to open the facility in time to welcome students for fall 2017 classes.
The Tennessee Higher Education Commission selected UT Martin as one of six institutions to receive funding through the 2016 Veteran Reconnect program in the fall of 2016. The first of many new resources available to student veterans in 2017 was the creation of a dedicated veterans’ services coordinator.

Dr. Bob Smith achieved several milestone goals as UT Martin’s interim chancellor. The UT Board of Trustees recognized those accomplishments by removing the word “interim” from his title during the board’s spring meeting March 29 in Chattanooga. Smith is now officially listed as the university’s 10th chancellor, and Dr. Keith Carver, originally named the university’s 10th chancellor, is now the 11th to hold that title. Smith was also granted the honorary title of “chancellor emeritus” by the board.

Dozens of university faculty and staff, community members and veterans joined state officials May 26 as UT Martin was named a Tennessee Veterans Education Transition Support Campus, one of 20 Tennessee institutions to hold this designation from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. The event, held at 10:30 a.m. in the Boling University Center’s Duncan Ballroom, followed the university’s annual Memorial Day commemoration ceremony.

Chancellor Keith Carver’s “Cruisin’ with Carver” tour was a huge success. He and his travel team visited 17 cities in 13 counties between Jan. 5 and Feb. 23 and ultimately spent 46 hours on the road. The chancellor met with approximately 870 high school students at 19 schools, made stops at 11 regional businesses and hosted 15 donor events and public receptions across the region.
Looking forward to a wonderful day with the students @UTM_Parsons #beutmproud

Drs. Allana Hamilton and Keith Carver share much common ground in their first year of leading their respective institutions. Hamilton, Jackson State Community College president, welcomed Carver, UT Martin chancellor; Dr. Flora Tydings, chancellor, Tennessee Board of Regents; and Mike Krause, executive director, Tennessee Higher Education Commission, to the JSCC campus Aug. 23 to formalize a partnership though UT Martin’s Elam Transfer Promise scholarships that will benefit Tennessee Promise students who seek to complete their four-year degrees at UT Martin.
UT Martin is creating a new strategic plan to direct university efforts for the next five years. An email sent from Chancellor Carver to all faculty and staff urges employees to take an active role in this process and participate when asked to provide feedback on university goals.

utmartin Members of the UT Chancellor’s Roundtable, Ned Ray McWherter Institute board of directors, alumni council leadership, and university faculty and staff gathered April 21 to officially dedicate the UT Martin Solar Garden sculpture located between the Boling University Center and the Paul Meek Library. The sculpture was a collaborative project between students in the departments of engineering and visual and theatre arts. During the ceremony, Chancellor Keith Carver thanked university alum Bill Blankenship for his willingness to fund the project’s construction. Blankenship is a noted university donor, and the Blankenship Recital Hall, located inside the Fine Arts Building, is named for him and his late wife, Roberta. He has also matched gifts made during Captain’s Challenge events in previous years. 84

UT Martin’s Family Weekend, hosted Sept. 23-24, included the Bow Tie 5K Run/One-Mile Walk, a tailgate party and a Skyhawk football game vs. Tennessee State University. The weekend was a success and is intended to become an annual event.
The third-annual “I Heart UTM” week was held in April and included the Mike Munkel Barbeque with inflatables, Senior Walk, “Donuts for Donors” and Hump Day – complete with camel rides. Captain’s Challenge was held in conjunction with “I Heart UTM” festivities and raised more than $250,000 in five days.

More than 930 graduates participated in UT Martin’s spring and fall 2017 commencement ceremonies. Dr. Flora Tydings, Tennessee Board of Regents chancellor, spoke during the spring ceremony, and Meg Kinnard Hardee, a political and legal affairs reporter with The Associated Press, addressed graduates in the fall.
Homecoming 2017 took on a “pirates theme as the Skyhawks faced the Murray State Racers in Graham Stadium. The 13th-annual Quad City boasted more tents than ever before as students and alumni celebrated the UT Martin experience.
Homecoming would not be complete without the annual rope pull competitions among campus Greek organizations. Many student groups train throughout the semester to ensure success in the rope pull bracket.
The 49th-annual UT Martin Spring College Rodeo brought a capacity crowd to the Ned McWherter Agricultural Complex, which again was standing-room only for the Saturday night competition.
SOAR staff members guided approximately 1,054 first-time freshmen through Summer Orientation and Registration in 2017, an increase of just over 11 percent as compared to the fall 2016 class.
