Tennessee’s goal since September wasn’t a secret -- Make it to The Honors Course. Saturday in Santee, Calif., the Vols earned themselves back-to-back trips to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships for the first time under head coach Jim Kelson. UT climbed to third at the San Diego Regional, shooting an 8-over-par score of 296 for the second straight round and finishing in a three-way tie with California and UNLV at 886. “We are really proud of our team for the way they persevered this week,” said Kelson, who has led UT to the NCAA finals five times in the last eight seasons. “We’re excited about making it and feel we have a good team.” Top-seeded and top-ranked Oregon ran away with the region championship, closing with a 2-under-par round of 286 for a three-day total of 870. Augusta State was second at 880. Tennessee junior Robin Wingardh shot a 1-over 73 Saturday to finish all alone in 10th place at 3-over-par 219. Close behind him on the individual leaderboard was Vols sophomore Garrick Porteous, who led the UT final-round effort with a sparkling 71 for a three-day scorecard of 221 that tied him for 14th. Tennessee kept up its Honors Course trend of playing consistently inconsistent, and thus the Vols depart this year’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championship with a tie for 25th place. UT shot 7-over-par 295 here Thursday for a combined total of 20-over 884. The team’s best (292) and worst (297) scores of the tournament were within shouting distance of one another, yet the Vols never reached the level of play they expected. “It’s just really disappointing,” head coach Jim Kelson said. “It seemed like we would have some good things going and then we would give it back. And it seemed like that happened two or three times each round. “But the bottom line is we were ranked 23rd, 24th or 25th coming into this tournament and we’re going to end up around the same thing. Senior David Holmes capped his Big Orange career with another outstanding performance at the NCAA finals, shooting a third-round score of 2-under 70 to post 1 under par for the championship and a tie for 24th place. “I just played solid all week,” he said. “I played great Wednesday; I had three bad holes and I played them 4 over. Then I got that birdie this morning that kind of kick-started my day and I played really well today. I was 3 under with three to play and I unfortunately bogeyed No. 7. That is such a hard hole. “But I’m happy and it was fun. I have some good memories and it was a great way to go out. I didn’t play as well as I wanted to this year but I didn’t ever play bad. I know my game’s there. I can say I’m better than I’ve ever been. Every year it’s gotten better; every day it’s gotten better. I’m pretty happy.” Robin Wingardh shot 73 for UT on Thursday to finish at 3-over-par 219 and tied for 59th. The junior was 3 under through 11 thanks to a trio of birdies over four holes around the turn before finishing with four bogeys coming home. Garrick Porteous capped his quality postseason run with a finish just outside the top-50 despite a closing 75. The sophomore shot 2-over-par 218 and tied for 51st. Jay Vandeventer posted his second consecutive 77 and finished at 16-over 232 in a tie for 141st place. Darren Renwick shot 79 and tied for 154th place at 22-over-par 238. “Obviously, it was a big goal to get here,” Kelson said. I’m proud of our efforts and the kids did a good job this year. Now, we’ve just got to keep getting better to jump up into that next level of teams that contend and compete.”

Senior James Brannen led the way by earning his fourth consecutive Academic All-SEC nod. The Clarksville native majored in biochemistry and molecular biology while lettering four seasons for the Vols. David Holmes and Cameron Lawrence earned their third straight Academic All-SEC honors. Holmes is a Knoxville product who majored in enterprise management. Lawrence came to UT from Brentwood and majored in economics. Justin Walker was selected for the second consecutive year. The Greenbrier native is an enterprise management major. And Darren Renwick capped his sophomore season with
his first Academic All-SEC nod. The product of Worthing, England, who last year was named to the SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll, is majoring in sport management. Vols head coach Jim Kelson has placed 57 student-athletes on the SEC’s Academic Honor Roll since taking the Tennessee reins in the 1998-99 season. Twenty-two of those honorees have been named in the last four years. In addition to SEC honors, recent Vols selected for national honors include Holmes (2009), Tino Weiss (2007) and Andrew Pratt (2003), all of whom were selected Cleveland Golf/ Srixon All-America Scholars.

Twice is Nice It’s been more than 20 years, and Eric Rebmann remains the only Vol to earn Academic All-America honors twice, doing so in 1986 and 1987. Rebmann, who majored in finance, lettered for the Vols from 1984-87 and was Academic All-Southeastern Conference three times. He was no slouch with the golf clubs either. As a sophomore in 1985, he fired a 205 to win the Chris Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. He also earned second-team All-SEC honors that season. After his senior year, he finished runner-up at the U.S. Amateur.
