DAVE SERRANO HEAD COACH

SERRANO LEADS TEAM USA IN 2012

18

Fourth Season at Tennessee Overall Record: 378-236-1 (.614) Cerritos College, 1985 Trinity College & University, 2003

Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Tennessee Baseball Program, Head Coach Dave Serrano’s efforts to revitalize and return the Volunteers into a nationally elite competitor continue to hold strong. Along with renewing a sense of excitement and optimism among his players, staff and Volunteer Nation, Serrano has brought a winning atmosphere to Rocky Top and in 2014, he led Tennessee to its first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007 with a 31-23 record, the program’s best mark since 2010. Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success, made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program following a nationwide search after the 2010 campaign. A former UT assistant, he was officially welcomed back to the Big Orange family on June 15, 2011. Since his arrival, the baseball program has witnessed an improved emphasis on recruitment and development, with the head coach and his staff securing four consecutive Top-20 recruiting classes for Rocky Top since 2012. In four years, Serrano has brought Tennessee back into the ranks of a national Top-25 status and now looks to set his team’s sights on the postseason and beyond. The Orange and White’s first campaign under Serrano saw it record wins over half of the 2011 College World Series field, downing No. 16 Texas, No. 10 South Carolina, No. 4 Florida and Vanderbilt. The Vols roared out of the gates, winning their first seven games to get off to the then-second best start in school history. That 7-0 record also marked the best by any UT skipper to start his Tennessee managerial career, topping the previous record of 4-0 last attained over 100 years prior in 1911. Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. With the opportunity to coach elite college players from all parts of the country, he led the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal win at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands. When Serrano returned for his second season on Rocky Top, the 2013 Volunteers featured one of the youngest teams in the nation with a NCAA-leading 18 true freshmen on the roster. Nevertheless, UT posted a series victory over No. 13 Kentucky and wins over No. 14 Arkansas and perennial power No. 20 Arizona State. In 2014, Serrano made Tennessee history and led the Vols to their best season start in program history, going 12-0 to start the year. The team stayed the course, jumping into Top 25 rankings for several weeks, to finish with a 31-23 record and make their first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007. A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 12 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano entered his fourth season at Rocky Top with a career record of 366-223-1 (.621) in ten seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year with the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four seasons with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009. Having returned to the site of his first Division I job, Serrano served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97- 36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995. Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003). He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zach and Parker.

TWO PROGRAMS TO OMAHA Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is one of only 12 coaches in NCAA history to lead two programs to the College World Series. Larry Cochell Cal State LA, Fullerton, Oklahoma Augie Garrido Fullerton, Texas Mike Gillespie USC, UC Irvine Andy Lopez Pepperdine, Florida, Arizona Paul Mainieri Notre Dame, LSU Pat McMahon Mississippi State, Florida Tom Petroff Rider, Northern Colorado Ron Polk Georgia Southern, Miss. St., Georgia Dave Serrano UC Irvine, Fullerton Dave Snow Loyola Marymount, Long Beach State Jack Stallings Florida St., Georgia Southern Dave Van Horn Nebraska, Arkansas

Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team which he led to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands. After opening its training with 10 days in North Carolina where it played a selection of collegiate summer teams and participated in the second annual Prospect Classic with the USA Baseball 18U squad, Serrano then led the Collegiate National Team into uncharted territory as it became the first U.S. squad to travel to Cuba to take on its national team in 16 years. Despite playing a veteran Cuban squad which featured 12 players who have competed in the World Baseball Classic and four who have done so twice, the Collegiate National Team proved its mettle by bookending the five-game series at Latin American Stadium in Havana with victories. That series would continue in the Netherlands where they split two more decisions as the U.S. went 5-2 during Honkbal Week to claim the bronze.

Notes on the Vols... MIDWEEK RECAP

¢ Following a one hour and 48 minute delayed start due to heavy rain, the Tennessee Volunteers battled back from an early deficit to beat the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 7-4, on Wednesday night at Tomlinson Stadium. ¢ Tennessee’s offense collected 12 hits on the Red Wolves and got on the boards early, as leadoff man Nick Senzel knocked a double to left field and scored on an RBI-single from shorstop A.J. Simcox in the first. Senzel went on to go 4-for-5 on the night against the Red Wolves, while Simcox (2-for-5, RBI) recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season. ¢ With one out, third baseman Jared Pruett put down a perfect squeeze bunt, as Stewart charged home on the pitch. With the successful squeeze, Pruett recorded his first RBI of the year and gave the Vols a 5-4 lead in his first start as a Volunteer. ¢ Junior left fielder Christin Stewart put the Vols back on top in the fifth, sailing a three-run home run over the right field fence to make it a 4-3 advantage for Tennessee. In the eighth, Stewart put another big swing on one and sent his second home run of the night over the right-center field wall, giving Tennessee a 7-4 advantage. With the home run, Stewart became the first Vol to hit two home runs in the game since Ethan Bennett did so against Alabama A&M on March 15, 2011. ¢ Tennessee starting pitcher Hunter Martin (1-1) went 4.0 innings in his Wednesday start, allowing three runs on five hits to receive no decision. Righthander Peter Lenstrohm entered the game in the fifth and tossed 2.1 innings before righty Bret Marks made his first appearance of the season in relief. ¢ After starting the game at first base, Andrew Lee finished the game for the Vols on the mound, striking out two of his three batters faced in the ninth.

LAY IT DOWN AND MOVE

¢ Tennessee ranks second in the SEC in sacrifice bunts with 32 on the season, trailing only Mississippi State with 33. The Vols’ small ball has also been put to work between the bases, as the squad rank tied for sixth in the league with 48 stolen bases attempts. ¢ Juniors A.J. Simcox (6) and Jeff Moberg (5) are among the Top 10 in the SEC in sac bunts. ¢ Entering the season, Simcox ranked second in UT history for career sacrifice bunts with 28. After the first week of non-conference competition, Simcox surpassed Zach Osborne (29) for first all-time in Tennessee history, now with 32 career sac bunts.

 The organization tabbed the highly-touted Serrano 10th on its list of sophomores. PG also tabbed the right-hander as the No. 16 draft prospect for the 2016 MLB Draft. Last season, Serrano also ranked as the No. 1 freshman in the SEC and the No. 4 freshman right-hander in the nation.  The Southeastern Conference announced its 2015 Preseason All-SEC teams, chosen by the 14 head baseball coaches within the league. Outfielder Christin Stewart received First Team honors, while 2014 Freshman All-American and All-SEC player Nick Senzel was selected as a Second Team Preseason All-SEC player.

MOTHER NATURE RULES

¢ Tennessee Baseball has endured record-setting winter weather conditions in 2015, with eight originally-scheduled home games resulting in cancellation, postponement or relocation from Knoxville. ¢ All but two of the eight games have been rescheduled, with the exception of Tennessee Tech (2/18) and MTSU (3/3).

¢ Tennessee is 7-2 in grey uniforms this year. ¢ With a loss in Tennessee’s last Sunday home game against Georgia (3/22), Tennessee snapped a nine-game win streak in games when wearing the ‘VolStros’ orange striped uniforms (9-1). ¢ The Volunteers currently hold a 3-1 record in home games played while wearing the solid white uniforms with the ‘Vols’ script. ¢ The Vols introduced a new uniform into the rotation on March 25 vs. Cincinnati, adding an orange top with a faded Power T and script ‘Tennessee’. UT is 1-1 in the new uniforms.

STREAKS & TRENDS

¢ Junior DH/RHP Andrew Lee has reached base safely in a team-best 11 straight games entering tonight’s game at Ole Miss. Shortstop A.J. Simcox is close behind, currently riding a streak of nine games reaching base safely. ¢ Simcox leads the Volunteers entering tonight’s matchup in Oxford, Miss., with an active nine-game hitting streak. ¢ Simcox is also leading the Vols’ squad with five multi-RBI games this year, all two-RBI games. ¢ With a 4-for-5 performance on Wednesday night at Arkansas State, sophomore Nick Senzel now has 12 multi-hit games on the year, which is tops on the Vols squad.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

¢ Tennessee began a stretch of eight-straight road games (March 27 - April 7) last weekend with a threegame series in Nashville, Tenn. ¢ Following their series at Vanderbilt, the Vols visited Arkansas State (W, 7-4) before traveling to face Ole Miss for three games in Oxford, Miss. (April 3-5). ¢ The Volunteers travel to take on Western Carolina on Tuesday, April 7 before returning home to Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Thursday, April 9 to host Missouri.

POSITION TRANSITIONS

 The Volunteers’ pitching staff has witnessed a fluid shifting of roles in 2015, with several starters now serving in relief roles and vice versa.  Junior lefty Drake Owenby has served as the Vols’ Saturday starter to start the 2015 season, while he led the team’s staff with five saves last season. Owenby has seven career saves for the Vols, which ranks T-9th for the most in school history.  Fellow lefthander Andy Cox began this year as Tennessee’s go-to reliever, despite having led the Volunteers with 70 strikeouts as a member of the starting rotation in 2014. Cox is expected to work back into a starting role while recovering from an offseason setback.  After beginning the year as Tennessee’s Sunday starter, sophomore righthander Kyle Serrano moves into the Vols’ bullpen this month.  Second baseman Nick Senzel moves into his permenant home in the infield, having been UT’s primary designated hitter in 2014 as a true freshman. While working behind currently Detroit Tigers minor leaguer Will Maddox at second, Senzel managed a .315 average with 14 stolen bases and a .419 OBP, earning Freshman All-American and All-SEC honors.  With the addition of freshman Brodie Leftridge, Tennessee has also experimented with outfield positional switches, putting Leftridge in center and junior Vincent Jackson in right field.

A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD  By Perfect Game reports, Tennessee’s 2015 signing class is ranked 12th in the nation. At the first of the year, the Vols’ 2014-15 recruitment class was ranked 13th in the nation by Perfect Game. The previous season, Baseball America listed Tennessee’s 2013-14 class as No. 15 overall, while Serrano’s first recruitment class was ranked 20th overall by Baseball America in 2012: - 2015 Class: Ranked No. 12 - 2014 Class: Ranked No. 13 - 2013 Class: Ranked No. 12 - 2012 Class: Ranked No. 20

YOUTH MOVEMENT

 The Volunteers have witnessed seven true freshmen make their debuts for UT in 2015, including outfielder Brodie Leftridge, infielder Brett Langhorne, catcher Benito Santiago and pitchers Zach Reid, Quint Robinson and Jacob Westphal. Lefty Zach Warren also made his first official collegiate start on March 11 against Morehead State (ND).  Redshirt freshman Andrew Plunkett has also made an impact through Tennessee’s first eight games, having started three games in the designated hitter spot of the order and blasting a tworun homer as part of a 12-10 victory over UC Irvine on Saturday, Feb. 28.

FIRST-YEAR PLAYER INTROS

 Tennessee’s roster boasts 10 true freshmen, two of which were ranked as Top 100 in their class by Perfect Game this offseason: catcher Benito Santiago and left-hander Zach Warren.  Of the Vols’ 10 true freshmen in 2015, two were drafted by Major League organizations following their senior year of high school: Benito Santiago (38th round, San Francisco) and Zach Warren (23rd round, Pittsburgh),  Two new Vols are joining the roster from junior colleges in 2014, including right-handed pitcher Steven Kane and infielder Jared Pruett.  Pruett made his first career start as a Volunteer at third base on April 1 at Arkansas State, going 0-for-3 with a perfectly executed squeeze bunt for an RBI, scoring Christin Stewart from third.  Outfielder Chris Hall debuts in his first season on Rocky Top following an NAIA National Championship season with Cumberland University. In 2014, Hall served as Cumberland’s leadoff man and led the team for total times hit by a pitch (20).

A VOLUNTEER CAST

FATHER/SON-COACH/PLAYER DUOS  With sophomore right-hander Kyle Serrano, who’s expected to start on Sunday, returning to join his father and Vols head coach Dave Serrano at UT, they remain just the third father/son-coach/ player duo in program history.  Since 2012, Tennessee’s current batboys are also the sons of Associate Head Coach Greg Bergeron (Brooks), Assistant Coach Aric Thomas (Brett) and Head Coach Dave Serrano (Parker).  Playing for his father during his freshman campaign last season, Kyle Serrano appeared in 19 games, including nine starts, and threw 4.0 scoreless innings in the Vols’ SEC Tournament game against Vanderbilt (May 22, 2014).  From 2006-07, Tony Delmonico - another Farragut grad - played for his father and longtime Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico. An infielder, Tony hit .329 with 142 hits and 85 RBIs over his career. Rod Delmonico coached the Vols for 18 seasons (1990-2007), amassing 699 wins and three College World Series appearances.  The program’s longest tenured coach at 18 seasons (1963-1981), Bill Wright coached his son Barry Wright from 1979-80.
