DAVE SERRANO HEAD COACH

SERRANO LEADS TEAM USA IN 2012

18

Fourth Season at Tennessee Overall Record: 381-239-1 (.614) Cerritos College, 1985 Trinity College & University, 2003

Entering his fourth season at the helm of the Tennessee Baseball Program, Head Coach Dave Serrano’s efforts to revitalize and return the Volunteers into a nationally elite competitor continue to hold strong. Along with renewing a sense of excitement and optimism among his players, staff and Volunteer Nation, Serrano has brought a winning atmosphere to Rocky Top and in 2014, he led Tennessee to its first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007 with a 31-23 record, the program’s best mark since 2010. Serrano’s energy and passion for the University of Tennessee, combined with his impeccable track record of success, made him the choice to become the 24th head coach of the Volunteer baseball program following a nationwide search after the 2010 campaign. A former UT assistant, he was officially welcomed back to the Big Orange family on June 15, 2011. Since his arrival, the baseball program has witnessed an improved emphasis on recruitment and development, with the head coach and his staff securing four consecutive Top-20 recruiting classes for Rocky Top since 2012. In four years, Serrano has brought Tennessee back into the ranks of a national Top-25 status and now looks to set his team’s sights on the postseason and beyond. The Orange and White’s first campaign under Serrano saw it record wins over half of the 2011 College World Series field, downing No. 16 Texas, No. 10 South Carolina, No. 4 Florida and Vanderbilt. The Vols roared out of the gates, winning their first seven games to get off to the then-second best start in school history. That 7-0 record also marked the best by any UT skipper to start his Tennessee managerial career, topping the previous record of 4-0 last attained over 100 years prior in 1911. Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. With the opportunity to coach elite college players from all parts of the country, he led the squad to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal win at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands. When Serrano returned for his second season on Rocky Top, the 2013 Volunteers featured one of the youngest teams in the nation with a NCAA-leading 18 true freshmen on the roster. Nevertheless, UT posted a series victory over No. 13 Kentucky and wins over No. 14 Arkansas and perennial power No. 20 Arizona State. In 2014, Serrano made Tennessee history and led the Vols to their best season start in program history, going 12-0 to start the year. The team stayed the course, jumping into Top 25 rankings for several weeks, to finish with a 31-23 record and make their first SEC Tournament appearance since 2007. A veteran of seven College World Series and one of just 12 coaches to lead two different programs to Omaha, Serrano entered his fourth season at Rocky Top with a career record of 366-223-1 (.621) in ten seasons as a Division I head coach. After leading UC Irvine to the 2007 CWS in his third year with the Anteaters, he moved on to Cal State Fullerton where he averaged 43.75 wins per season in his four seasons with the Titans, including an appearance in Omaha in 2009. Having returned to the site of his first Division I job, Serrano served two seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee from 1995-96, following seven years at Cerritos Junior College. His first taste of Omaha came as a Volunteer as he helped lead a Big Orange squad featuring all-time UT greats Todd Helton and R.A. Dickey to the College World Series for the first time in over four decades in 1995. During Serrano’s first stint in Knoxville, Tennessee posted an impressive 97- 36 (.729) record, including a school-record 54 wins in 1995. Serrano holds a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and University (2003). He and his wife, Tracy, have three sons, Kyle, Zach and Parker.

TWO PROGRAMS TO OMAHA Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano is one of only 12 coaches in NCAA history to lead two programs to the College World Series. Larry Cochell Cal State LA, Fullerton, Oklahoma Augie Garrido Fullerton, Texas Mike Gillespie USC, UC Irvine Andy Lopez Pepperdine, Florida, Arizona Paul Mainieri Notre Dame, LSU Pat McMahon Mississippi State, Florida Tom Petroff Rider, Northern Colorado Ron Polk Georgia Southern, Miss. St., Georgia Dave Serrano UC Irvine, Fullerton Dave Snow Loyola Marymount, Long Beach State Jack Stallings Florida St., Georgia Southern Dave Van Horn Nebraska, Arkansas

Following his first season at Tennessee, Serrano was awarded the honor of serving as the head coach of the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team which he led to a 12-5 record and a bronze medal at Honkbal Week in the Netherlands. After opening its training with 10 days in North Carolina where it played a selection of collegiate summer teams and participated in the second annual Prospect Classic with the USA Baseball 18U squad, Serrano then led the Collegiate National Team into uncharted territory as it became the first U.S. squad to travel to Cuba to take on its national team in 16 years. Despite playing a veteran Cuban squad which featured 12 players who have competed in the World Baseball Classic and four who have done so twice, the Collegiate National Team proved its mettle by bookending the five-game series at Latin American Stadium in Havana with victories. That series would continue in the Netherlands where they split two more decisions as the U.S. went 5-2 during Honkbal Week to claim the bronze.

Notes on the Vols... LAST WEEKEND’S RECAP

¢ Tennessee moves to 15-16 (.484) and 5-10 in SEC play after hosting No. 23-ranked Missouri (April 9-11) for a three-game set at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. ¢ Over their three games against Missouri, the Volunteers’ pitching staff combined to record 10plus strikeouts in each of their games this weekend: 12 on Thursday, 13 on Friday and 10 on Saturday. ¢ Against Missouri, Tennessee used a dominant performance by left-handed starter Andy Cox and a two-run homer by Christin Stewart to scratch past the Tigers on Thursday night, taking a 5-2 win in Game One. ¢ The Volunteers came out strong on Friday night and took an early two-run lead against Missouri, but the Tigers came back to plate six runs in the fifth and take an 8-3 decision. Starter Bret Marks’ outing ended in the fifth, when Missouri used six hits to push six runs across in the top of the frame. ¢ In the series finale of a three-game set against Missouri, the Tennessee Volunteers fell victim to four-run fifth and eighth innings and struggled to make up the deficit, taking a 10-1 loss to the Tigers on Saturday. Starting pitcher Drake Owenby surrendered five hits, including two triples and two home runs before exiting with a runner on first and one out.

LAY IT DOWN AND MOVE

¢ Tennessee ranks first in the SEC in sacrifice bunts with 38 on the season. ¢ Juniors A.J. Simcox (8), Brodie Leftridge (5) and Jeff Moberg (5) are among the Top 10 in the SEC in sac bunts. ¢ Entering the season, Simcox ranked second in UT history for career sacrifice bunts with 28. After the first week of non-conference competition, Simcox surpassed Zach Osborne (29) for first all-time in Tennessee history, now with 34 career sac bunts.

MOTHER NATURE RULES

¢ Tennessee Baseball has endured record-setting winter weather conditions in 2015, with eight originally-scheduled home games resulting in cancellation, postponement or relocation from Knoxville. ¢ Additionally, Tennessee’s April 7th matchup at Western Carolina was cancelled due to heavy rain. ¢ All but three of the nine total games have been rescheduled, with the exception of Tennessee Tech (2/18), MTSU (3/3) and WCU (4/7).

STYLE MATTERS

¢ Tennessee is 7-3 in grey uniforms this year. ¢ Tennessee’s best record comes when wearing the popular ‘VolStros’ throwback stripes, as the club is now 9-2 in the uniforms, which were introduced in 2014 for home games. ¢ The Volunteers currently hold a 4-2 record in home games played while wearing the solid white uniforms with the ‘Vols’ script. ¢ The Vols introduced a new uniform into the rotation on March 25 vs. Cincinnati, adding an orange top with a faded Power T and script ‘Tennessee’. POSITION TRANSITIONS

 The Volunteers’ pitching staff has witnessed a fluid shifting of roles in 2015, with several starters now serving in relief roles and vice versa.  Junior lefty Drake Owenby has served as the Vols’ Saturday starter to start the 2015 season, while he led the team’s staff with five saves last season. Owenby has seven career saves for the Vols, which ranks T-9th for the most in school history.  Fellow lefthander Andy Cox began this year as Tennessee’s go-to reliever, despite having led the Volunteers with 70 strikeouts as a member of the starting rotation in 2014.  After beginning the year as Tennessee’s Sunday starter, sophomore righthander Kyle Serrano moves into the Vols’ bullpen this month.  Second baseman Nick Senzel moves into his permenant home in the infield, having been UT’s primary designated hitter in 2014 as a true freshman. While working behind currently Detroit Tigers minor leaguer Will Maddox at second, Senzel managed a .315 average with 14 stolen bases and a .419 OBP, earning Freshman All-American and All-SEC honors.  With the addition of freshman Brodie Leftridge, Tennessee also experimented with outfield positional switches, putting Leftridge in center and junior Vincent Jackson in right field.
