Martin’s Teams Are High-Scoring, Too Valuing possessions, at least with Martin’s teams, has not come at the expense of offensive output ... After just one year at Missouri State, Martin led the Bears from last to first on the Missouri Valley Conference scoring offense chart ... And during the course of Martin’s three years at MSU, the program improved its scoring average nearly 9.0 ppg. Year 2008-09 Missouri State 2009-10 Missouri State 2010-11 Missouri State

Friendly Confines In 2010, Martin’s Missouri State team tied Kansas for the national Division I lead in home wins with 19 ... And MSU’s average home attendance increased more than 1,350 fans per game during Martin’s tenure there ... Those figures make for a tremendously exciting outlook of what his teams could accomplish in the friendly (and rabid) confines of Thompson-Boling Arena (21,678 capacity).

2011-12 TENNESSEE BASKETBALL 80 = The Tipping Point In his previous three seasons as a head coach, Cuonzo Martin’s teams are 11-0 when they score at least 80 points ... That’s not surprising given the emphasis Martin places on unrelenting defensive pressure, tenacity and technique. Grand Accomplishment Fifth-year senior Cameron Tatum is 194 points shy of becoming the 44th member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club ... Entering this season, the 6-7 guard from Lithonia, Ga., averaged 7.8 ppg while appearing in 104 career games as a Vol. What’s The Rotation? Head coach Cuonzo Martin has fielded plenty of preseason questions about how many players he’ll utilize in Tennessee’s rotation this year ... Martin has said that while he ideally hopes to trim the regular rotation to 8-9 players, he and his staff will use more players early in the season while evaluating their personnel in game situations. Summitt Rehabbing Wrist Injury Sophomore guard Tyler Summitt is the only player on Tennessee’s 17-man roster who is presently inactive ... The Knoxville, Tenn., native continues to rehab a left wrist injury ... Summitt underwent surgery on Aug. 24, and senior associate athletic trainer Chad Newman projects Summitt to return to full contact sometime in early November ... Newman has kept Summitt in shape running steps, performing strength and flexibility exercises and doing limited dribbling and shooting work Television Presence Strong Once Again Tennessee is scheduled to play 14 games on national television this season (on CBS and the ESPN family of networks) ... Another 15 contests will be telecast regionally on networks such as Fox Sports Net and the SEC Network ... That means 29 of Tennessee’s 31 regular-season game will be televised. Notes From The Weight Room Strength and conditioning coach Troy Wills on which Vols have made noticeable strides in the weight room: “Wes Washpun is one of the most athletic kids we’ve had in a while. He’s got a 41-inch vertical and recorded a time in the pro agility test that is comparable to a lot of the better defenders I’ve had an opportunity to work with in the past seven years.” ... “Trae Golden has put a concerted effort into his training, and the changes he’s made in his body and physical performance are evident. He’s lighter and stronger than he’s ever been, and he’s increased his vertical jump to higher than 35 inches, which is nearly three inches better than last year.” ... “Jeronne Maymon is by far our strongest player, with a bench press well over 300 pounds. Renaldo Woolridge is the most well-rounded athlete we have from a physical standpoint, being a top-three performer in every test. Specifically, he bench pressed 275 pounds, vertical jumps 38 inches and he ran the 3/4-court sprint in 3.03 seconds.”

Vols Part Of Loaded Maui Invitational Field The Vols will make their second all-time appearance at the newly expanded EA SPORTS Maui Invitational this season ... Along with the perennial tournament host school, Chaminade, the field includes Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee and UCLA ... With expansion comes four additional Division I teams known as the “Mainland Teams.” ... Each of the eight Island Teams (excluding Chaminade) will play one game against a Mainland Team before traveling to Maui for the Championship Round ... The four Mainland Teams are Belmont, Middle Tennessee, UNC Greensboro and Towson ... Tennessee’s mainland opponent is UNC Greensboro (Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. in Knoxville [FS South]) ... The Vols previously competed in the Maui Invitational in 2004, finishing fourth. Martin Has History In Maui Cuonzo Martin has coaching experience at the Maui Invitational, as Purdue joined the field in 2006 ... The Boilermakers, with Martin on the bench just months before being promoted to associate head coach, fell to Georgia Tech before logging wins over Oklahoma and DePaul for a fifth-place finish ... It was during that year’s tournament that Martin’s son, Chase, celebrated his fifth birthday ... Now, in 2011, Chase Martin will celebrate his 10th birthday in Maui as well. Numerous Degrees Within Reach According to team academic counselor Fernandez West, three current Vols are on pace to earn their degree in May ... Those players are Tyler Summitt (Communications, with a Business minor), Cameron Tatum (Africana Studies) and Renaldo Woolridge (Sociology) ... In the past three seasons alone, 12 Tennessee basketball players have earned their degrees. High-Percentage Hall Junior forward Kenny Hall is Tennessee’s leading returner in terms of field-goal percentage from last season, having converted on 19 of 36 attempts from the floor (.528) ... Hall led the team in fieldgoal percentage as a freshman in 2009-10, shooting .578 (52 of 90) from the field—and .617 (29 of 47) in regular-season SEC play ... Hall shoots .563 for his career (71 of 126) ... More than half (36 of 71, .507) of Hall’s career field goals have been dunks; that’s as “high-percentage” as it gets.
Volunteers Boast The SEC’s Longest Active Streak Of NCAA Tournament Bids The Vols have the longest active NCAA Tournament streak in the Southeastern Conference, earning their sixth consecutive bid last season. Volunteers Dominant On State Circuit Tennessee State is the only Division I basketball program in the state the Volunteers have not faced since the 2005-06 season ... Over the past six years, the Vols have played—and beaten—every in-state Division I team except the Tigers … Those schools include Austin Peay, Belmont, Chattanooga, ETSU, Lipscomb, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, UT Martin and Vanderbilt … Dating to 200506, UT is 30-6 (.833) against in-state Division I teams, and the Vols are riding an eight-game win streak against in-state opposition. Longtime Hoops SID Bud Ford Retiring Longtime UT Media Relations Director Bud Ford in May announced his retirement effective at the end of December ... A Knoxville, Tenn., native and 45-year veteran of his profession, Ford is moving into the position of Athletics Department Historian beginning Jan. 1, 2012 ... Ford, hired at UT right out of college in June of 1966, was promoted to his current position of Associate Athletics Director for Media Relations in April 2000 ... Before that, Ford served as primary men’s basketball contact from 196685, during the Ray Mears and Don DeVoe eras ... Ford, 66, spent 13 years as UT’s Sports Information Director and then was promoted to Assistant AD for Sports Information ... Ford was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 2001 and later received the prestigious Arch Ward Award in 2006 for outstanding contributions to the field of sports information ... At Tennessee home games, Ford serves as the spotter for public address announcer Jeff Jarnigan and occupies a seat near center court at the scorer’s table. Familiar Faces From Abroad Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin was handpicked by USA Basketball to serve as an assistant coach with the 2011 USA Men’s World University Games Team this past summer in Shenzen, China ... Several of the players who were members of that fifth-place squad will be taking the floor against Martin and the Vols this season ... Those players include: Ashton Gibbs (guard, Pittsburgh), JaMychal Green (forward, Alabama), John Jenkins (guard, Vanderbilt) and Darius Miller (guard, Kentucky) ... Prior to the team’s trip to China, it spent a week training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. During that time, Jenkins spoke highly of Martin’s coaching style ... “The way he coaches is very unique,” Jenkins said. “If you mess up, he will tell you what you did wrong and how to fix it. This helps us out a lot, and it’s been keeping us trying to get better because most coaches don’t do it that way. His style is unique and I like it a lot.”

• Coach Martin has been impressed with Hall’s play during the preseason but said he’d like to see Hall play a bit more selfishly on offensive end. • His .528 field-goal percentage from a season ago makes him the Vols’ top returner in that category. • Exactly 46 percent of his career rebounds have been offensive boards (69 of 150). • Was Tennessee’s third center last season, as he played behind now-departed seniors John Fields and Brian Williams (both of whom went on to sign professional basketball contracts). • One of four Georgia natives on Tennessee’s roster (joining Trae Golden, Jordan McRae and Cameron Tatum). • Though Tennessee retired jersey No. 20 in honor of Allan Houston (1990-93), Houston gave Hall his blessing to finish his career wearing the number.
