DRIVE TO VICTORY LANE
All season long, the 2010-11 University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team had its collective sights set on rolling into “Victory Lane” at the 30th running of the NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis, Ind. One lap short of making it to Indy, Tennessee’s hopes were side-swiped. Nevertheless, the 37th edition of a Pat Summitt coached squad produced a 34-3 overall record and for the second consecutive season produced the double-dip of capturing both the regular season Southeastern Conference crown and the coveted SEC Tournament title with a flawless record. “I am so proud of our team for going through the SEC regular season and tournament undefeated – that is not an easy thing to do with a huge target on your back all the time,” said Summitt. “It’s true, we advanced farther than the year before but we came up short of our goal… competing for a Final Four in Indianapolis. I am proud of how we played and competed all season long. With our schedule, winning 25 consecutive games was quite a feat,” said Summitt. Not to diminish the accomplishment of winning consecutive SEC Regular Season Championships and Tournaments, but the expectations at Tennessee are pretty high. The 2011 team was capable of getting to the Final Four but it fell just short of the goal with a loss in the NCAA Elite 8. Tennessee started the season on the road with a 63-50 win at Louisville and was part of the opening night festivities in front of 22,124 fans at the KFC Yum! Center. It was the 19th largest crowd the Lady Vols have ever played in front of and the biggest in BIG EAST history. The game was a coming out party for Lady Vol rookie guard Meighan Simmons who came off the bench to drop in 22 points for UT and a welcome back party for Vicki Baugh who scored her first points since tearing her anterior cruciate ligament for the second time on Feb. 3, 2009. By the next game, Simmons was in the starting line-up for the rest of the season -- becoming the 60th freshman ever to start a game for the Lady Vols -- and immediately celebrated with a 26-point performance over Chattanooga in a 103-43 win

in Knoxville. In that win, the Lady Vols broke the UT single-game records for three-pointers made (15) and attempted (33). UT senior Angie Bjorklund got into the scoring act with 26 points of her own in the win over Virginia (85-73) and junior running mate Shekinna Stricklen dropped in 18-points in the 80-64 victory over Arizona State. The Lady Vols jetted to the U.S. Virgin Islands for a Thanksgiving weekend at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, as the considered favorite. Missouri fell by the wayside rather easily, 82-44, and Georgia Tech hung in and battled with the Lady Vols but lost 66-42, as Glory Johnson had a monster game with 15 points and a career high 18 rebounds for Tennessee. The game with Tech gave new meaning to the term “lights out.” The power went out on the Island four times during the game for total stoppage of 43:15. There was nothing about a lights out Lady Vol squad the next night. UT showed up for the championship game and looked as if it was playing in broken flipflops in wet sand and dropped a disappointing 69-58 decision to BIG EAST foe and number 12/13-ranked Georgetown. It was the first time in three seasons that Tennessee had not led in a game at all. Back home on terra firma, Tennessee welcomed first time opponent Lamar to Knoxville and handed the visitors from Texas a 99-55 loss. It was due in large part to Simmons, from Cibolo, Texas, setting a UT single game record with eight three-pointers en route to a career high 28 points. Tennessee also tied its single game team record for threes made (15) and set the record for three-point attempts (36). Bjorklund also got into the act, breaking the record for career threepoint attempts, passing Shanna Zolman’s old mark of 626 set from 2002-06. In the next game, an Old Dominion record crowd of 7,774 fans filled the stands in Norfolk, Va., to watch the Lady Vols defeat the Lady Monarchs, 74-44 on Dec. 5. The mark eclipsed ODU’s old record of 7,758 set when UT traveled to Norfolk in 2003. Following that contest, the team was out of action for a week during final exams. The Lady Vols returned to the court and took an 8-1 record into the next game at number 21/24-ranked Texas. Bjorklund came out blazing on all cylinders and dropped in 20 first half points. Tennessee’s 9277 victory snapped the Longhorns 27-game nonconference home winning streak. The state of Texas road swing continued with a first time visit to Waco and a meeting with number 2/3-ranked Baylor. A record crowd of 10,569 jammed the Ferrell Center to see the two teams square off in a repeat of the 2010 Sweet 16 matchup. Despite owning the boards, 53-43, the Lady Vols fell 65-54 to the Lady Bears after shooting a miserable 25 percent from the field. Tennessee had to regroup in a hurry as they returned home with a 9-2 record to face number 3/2-ranked Stanford on Dec. 19. Down by six (63-57), UT went on an 8-0 run to take a two-point lead with 4:41 left and then forced the game into overtime tied at 70-all. The extra stanza was all Tennessee, outscoring the Cardinal 12-2 in overtime and forcing Stanford into 0-6 shooting from the field en route to the 82-72 win. Simmons led UT with 23 points…the fifth 20-point game of her young career. UT claimed its 11th win of 2010-11 with a 102-53 victory over East Tennessee State three days before Christmas. With a free throw at the 16:19 mark in the opening stanza, Stricklen became the 35th Lady Vol to score over 1,000 career points, and sophomore Taber Spani gift-wrapped her performance turning in her first career double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Before the Lady Vols closed the books on the 2010 portion of the schedule, it lost one of the program’s all-time leaders in Melissa McCray-Dukes (1985-89).

On Dec. 27, McCray-Dukes lost her long and hardfought battle with breast cancer at the age of 43 years old. Nicknamed “Emma” by her Tennessee teammates, McCray-Dukes played on four consecutive NCAA Final Four teams (1986-87-88-89) and started as a guard on coach Summitt’s first two national championship teams in 1987 and 1989. To honor McCray-Dukes, the Lady Vols displayed her uniform number, 35, on their game shorts beginning with the 87-51 win over Rutgers on Dec. 30. In that game, Bjorklund made her 267th career three-pointer at the 18:34 mark in the first half to set the Lady Vol career treys record breaking Zolman’s old record of 266. Simmons string of double-figure scoring games to open her rookie season was halted with just seven points. It ended at 13 games, leaving her one behind Chamique Holdsclaw’s record of 14 to start the 199596 season. UT entered 2011 and the conference slate with a 12-2 record. Picked as the favorite to repeat as SEC Champs, the target was bigger than ever as SEC play opened with a tough 73-65 win over LSU in the Bayou. In the game, Tennessee could not find the range from three-point land and failed to register a trey for the first time in 422 games. The last time the Lady Vols did not make a three-pointer was on Jan. 21, 1999, at Florida. UT’s treymaster, Bjorklund, was also held scoreless for the first time since March 5, 2009. Back in Knoxville for a pair of SEC games, Tennessee tore through Alabama, 110-45, as Simmons dished 11 assists, a Lady Vol freshman record. Three days later, Ole Miss was dispatched 86-46, with a UT crowd of 14,363 on hand. Off to a fast 3-0 start in conference play, the Big Orange headed to meet a streaking Florida squad sporting a nine game homecourt winning streak. The Gators had no bite on Jan. 13, 2011, as the Lady Vols handed UF a 43-point defeat, 83-40. So dominant on this night, UT had more three-pointers at the half (seven) than Florida had field goals (six). Tennessee hoops added another line to its unparalleled history, as ESPN College GameDay Driven by State Farm® series, rolled into Knoxville for its first-ever doubleheader on Jan 15. The Vols faced Vanderbilt at noon and drew 21,198 fans. The Lady Vols versus the Vandy women followed in the nightcap and a crowd of 17,853 was treated to a 68-56 victory by UT. Overall the two games drew 39,051and it was believed to have been a record for an on-campus men’s and women’s college basketball event.

As for the game, Simmons led The Big Orange with 17 points in her 17th game in double-figures scoring while Bjorklund was the iron woman logging all 40 minutes while dropping in 14 points. Two road contests following the big win over the Commodores as the Lady Vols traveled to both South Carolina and Auburn and picked up challenging victories. UT defeated USC, 71-56, but it was just a five point game (57-52) with 4:57 left. Fortunately for the Lady Vols, Stricklen packed her defense, boards and scoring while registering a career-best 16 rebounds and a team high 18 points in the win. In the next outing, Tennessee claimed a 20-point win at Auburn, 73-53, to spoil the gathering of the largest crowd (7,536) ever to see a game at the Auburn Arena. UT’s bench came to play and outscored the homestanding team 26-6. Contributing to the bench bonanza was Baugh who scored nine points…the most since she suffered a torn ACL on Feb. 3, 2009. Finally back at home after 12 days, the Lady Vols celebrated by notching the 20th win on the season with an 81-55 decision over Mississippi State. It marked the 35th consecutive season that the Lady Vols had secured at least 20 victories. The Lady Bulldogs made a game of it in the first half and led 3735 at intermission. However, Summitt got her team’s attention at halftime and the Lady Vols opened the second half with 18 consecutive points and held State without a tally until 14:11 was left in the game. The win marked perhaps the best game of Johnson’s career tallying career bests in points (22), assists (seven) and blocks (four) and tied a career best with 18 boards. She got scoring help from Spani who celebrated her 20th birthday with 18 points in the game. Tennessee wrapped up the month of January traveling to Arkansas where a Stricklen homecoming game produced a 72-53 victory as she tied a careerbest with 26 points and 10 field goals and knocked in a career-best six three-pointers. The Morrilton, Ark., native had a strong cheering section from her hometown at the game as she made 10-of-15 shots and 6-of-9 treys. Spani had another great game tying a career-best with a trio of three-point buckets and scored 18 points in a career-high 39 minutes. The February portion of the schedule started against number 15/18-ranked Kentucky in Lexington. The Wildcats didn’t really care that UT was leading the SEC and jumped out to an early advantage after forcing 17 first-half turnovers. UK trailed by a point with 9:42 left before the Lady Vols stepped on the gas to pull away and record a 73-67 win. Despite a rough night committing nine turnovers, Simmons stayed tough and focused, scoring 15 points and making some big shots down the stretch. Her three with 4:25 left in the game put UT up 65-61. She also gave the Lady Vols a 71-67 advantage with two clutch free throws with 15 seconds left in the contest. After struggling in the win over the Wildcats, UT won the next two games kind of ugly. In defeating Florida 61-39 in Knoxville, the Lady Vols’ 61 points was an SEC-low for the squad in 2010-11 and held the Gators to an opponent season-low of 39 points. The victory was Tennessee’s 300th SEC league win alltime, dating back to the 1982-83 season. Three days later, a low energy UT team arrived in Nashville to face Vanderbilt for the second time in 2011. Tennessee was dismal in the opening stanza scoring just 15 points as the Commodores took a 13-point lead, 28-15. UT’s 15 points were the thirdlowest first half output all-time. Off the bench in the second half, UT rookie guard Lauren Avant scored six straight points in a 32-second span to pull the Big Orange within a point, 42-41, at the 7:33 mark. Fellow rookie Simmons’ trey gave UT a 44-42 advantage - its first lead since being up 5-2 at the 16:01 mark in the first half. The back-to-back close shaves got the team’s attention as they crushed South Carolina, 82-60 in Knoxville. Junior Alicia Manning came off the bench to spark the Lady Vols scoring a career-best 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting. She made her first three threepointers, tying a career high in treys. Fellow junior Lyssi Brewer also made her presence known and scored a season-best seven points – all in the game’s first 5:05 (She had seven of UT’s first 11 points). In her first start of 2011, she also added a season-best 10

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team cruised to an 86-53 exhibition victory over two-time defending NAIA champions Union (Tenn.) on Nov. 7 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Union hung tough for much of the first half and drew to within 21-18 before the Big Orange closed the half on an 18-3 run to take a 39-21 lead into the locker room. Tennessee was keyed by the play of sophomore Glory Johnson, who led Tennessee with 20 points and 11 rebounds, both game-highs. After being critical of her team’s defensive performance on Tuesday night against Carson-Newman, UT coach Pat Summitt spoke much more glowingly about today’s defensive effort, but emphasized that the team still has improvements to make. Tennessee got a spark from the return of Vicki Baugh. A junior forward, Baugh had not played since suffering a second torn ACL on Feb. 3, 2009. She entered the game to a standing ovation from the 11,252 fans at Thompson-Boling Arena, something she said really meant a lot to her. Three other Lady Volunteers scored in double figures, led by Alicia Manning’s 13 points. Taber Spani and Shekinna Stricklen added 10. UT pulled down 49 boards (20 offensive) to Union’s game total of 23 and forced 19 turnovers. Union head coach Mark Campbell said he was proud of his team’s effort. Kayla Hudson led the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points on 6-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-10 from way downtown.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Led by freshman guard Meighan Simmons’ 22 points off the bench before a record crowd, No. 4 Tennessee beat Louisville 63-50 on Nov. 12 in the first regular-season game at the new KFC Yum! Center. The game set a Big East women’s attendance mark of 22,124. That topped the 19,123 that then-No. 1 Connecticut drew in a visit to Freedom Hall on Jan. 12, 2008. Shekinna Stricklen scored 14 points for Tennessee, which improved to 34-3 in season openers in Summitt’s 37 seasons. Monique Reid had 19 points for Louisville in a loss that snapped a five-game winning streak in openers for the Cardinals. It was a sloppy, physical game as both teams struggled to hold onto the ball or find the basket. Louisville led 8-2 before Tennessee took the lead for good at 11-10 on a layup by Johnson. The Lady Vols wound up with 29 turnovers. Louisville had 22. Simmons got going in her own debut hit a jumper to cap a 10-0 spurt for a 15-10 lead midway through the first half. Louisville didn’t go away, not with that crowd ramping up the energy every time the Cardinals hit a big basket. Each time the Cardinals scored to trim the lead, Tennessee answered. Reid’s fastbreak layup pulled the Cardinals within 32-31 in the opening minutes of the second half, and Cain scored six straight buckets underneath for Tennessee. Becky Burke hit a 3 that pulled Louisville within 40-36 with 12:40 left. Simmons took over. She got the rebound of her own miss and scored. She then hit back-to-back 3s before Stricklen’s layup gave Tennessee its first double-digit lead at 55-44 with 5:11 to go. UTLADYVOLS.COM

HISTORY
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 4 Tennessee began a new women’s basketball season on Tuesday night, but a 11066 exhibition victory over Carson-Newman in ThompsonBoling Arena couldn’t silence coach Pat Summitt’s usual refrain. That’s defense and rebounding. The final score certainly wound up in Tennessee’s favor, and the Lady Vols never trailed. Tennessee shot 54 percent from the field, including a 61-percent mark from both the field and from 3-point range in the first half. Exhibition games are all about finding places to improve. And the Lady Vols were without three post players still nursing injuries - Alyssia Brewer, Kelley Cain and Vicki Baugh. That certainly altered UT’s front line, but even without those three (and senior Angie Bjorklund and freshman Lauren Avant) on the court, they still managed to outrebound the Lady Eagles 45-28. Freshman Meighan Simmons scored 11 points and led the team with five assists in her first game as a Lady Vol. Four other Lady Vols scored in double figures Tuesday night as well. Taber Spani hit four of her six 3-point attempts and finished with 22 points, while Shekinna Stricklen was 4-for5 beyond the 3-point line and had 15 points. Forward Alicia Manning didn’t have much trouble on the boards, grabbing 13 rebounds and scoring 15 points. Sydney Smallbone also reached double figures, scoring 10 points in 21 minutes.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee assistant coach Mickie DeMoss wrote on the board before the fourth-ranked Lady Vols took the court against Chattanooga, “If you’re open, do not hesitate.” Not a problem, coach. Meighan Simmons led four players in double-digit scoring with 26 points as Tennessee hit a school-record 15 3-pointers in a 103-43 romp over Chattanooga on Monday night. The freshman, who was rewarded for her 22-point performance in her first game as a Lady Vol with a starting role against Chattanooga, got things rolling with a 3-pointer 9 seconds into the game. The Lady Vols (2-0) never let up as they hit four more 3s during their opening 19-0 run. Smothered by Tennessee’s pressing defense, Chattanooga (0-2) didn’t score until 14:22 in the first, when Alex Black fought for a jump shot to make it 19-2. Simmons immediately answered with yet another 3-point shot, and the Lady Mocs went through another 4-minute scoring drought. Tennessee baited the Lady Mocs by going inside to its tall posts and then shooting the ball outside to whichever sharpshooter was wide open. The Lady Vols grabbed a 36-point lead off a Sydney Smallbone jumper with less than a minute to go before the break, but a free throw by Chattanooga’s Tenisha Townsend cut it to 51-16. By then the Lady Vols had shot 58.8 percent from the field, made 11 of 18 from behind the arc and had three players in double-digit scoring. Angie Bjorklund finished with 20 points, Taber Spani had 14 and Kamiko Williams added 12.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Lady Volunteers overcame sluggish defensive play with accurate shooting against a speedy Virginia team to capture an 85-73 win at Thompson-Boling Arena on Nov. 18. Strong shooting overcame the defensive woes as the Lady Vols shot 53.1 percent against the Cavaliers in the first half. Bjorklund, who scored 24 points in a win at Virginia a season ago, made six 3-pointers and scored 26 points while playing all 40 minutes. Shekinna Stricklen added 15 points for Tennessee, and Meighan Simmons had 12. Ariana Moorer led Virginia with 24 points, Paulisha Kellum added 18 and Telia McCall had 10 points and eight rebounds. Virginia got off to a quick start, hitting its first eight shots and used a 9-0 run to take a 17-9 lead with 15:45 in the first half. Tennessee switched between their typical man-to-man defense and a zone to slow the Cavaliers down and rally back. A 3-point basket by Stricklen tied the game at 32 with 6:42 in the first half, and the Lady Vols held a 41-39 lead at halftime. Bjorklund opened the second half with a 3-pointer, launching an 8-0 run that gave Tennessee a 49-39 lead with 15:36 left. Virginia didn’t score until a pair of free throws by Ataira Franklin with 14:39 to go. The shooting effort remained cool as the Cavaliers hit only 41.7 percent of their second-half shots. The Lady Vols pushed the margin to as many as 18 points -- enough to sustain a late run by Virginia.

GAME 4: ARIZONA STATE KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Junior Glory Johnson grabbed 15 rebounds and scored 14 points inside as the Lady Volunteers beat Arizona State 80-64 on Nov. 21. Both Tennessee and Arizona State used smothering defense in the first half, but the Sun Devils’ shooting efforts fell apart halfway through under pressure by the Lady Vols. The Sun Devils wouldn’t score again in the half after taking an 18-17 lead on a jumper by Adrianne Thomas with 8:38 to go. The Lady Vols used a 16-0 run during that time to grab a 33-18 lead heading into halftime. Tennessee (4-0) took advantage of 11 first-half turnovers by Arizona State, turning them into 12 points. Instead of relying on Angie Bjorklund, their senior shooting guard, the Lady Vols spread the ball around. Shekinna Stricklen led the team with 18 points, Kamiko Williams and Taber Spani each added 12 and Meighan Simmons had 10. The Sun Devils (2-1) have relied on their own defense and rebounding to carry them this season. They limited their first two opponents to 33 percent shooting from the field while forcing a combined 46 turnovers and outrebounding their opponents an average 53-30.5. Instead, it was Lady Vols who won the rebounding battle, 45-36, as they hit 45.6 percent of their shots from the field. Arizona State shot 51.9 percent in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to overcome their 28.6 percent first-half shooting, and the Lady Vols’ lead never dropped below 13 points after halftime.

ST. THOMAS, USVI -- The fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team got a taste of its own medicine on Saturday night at the University of the Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center in the final game of the “Reef Division” at the 2010 Paradise Jam. No. 12/13-ranked Georgetown forced the Lady Vols to commit 29 turnovers, resulting in 31 points en route to a 69-58 victory. Heading into this matchup, Tennessee had committed just 25 turnovers in two games on the island and forced the opposition (Missouri and Georgia Tech) into committing 49 turnovers that resulted in 60 points. Georgetown captured the “Reef Division” title behind the play of guard Sugar Rodgers, who scored 28 points against the Lady Vols and was named MVP. Joining her on the all-tournament team were RaeShara Brown, of Missouri, Alex Montgomery, of Georgia Tech, Monica McNutt, of Georgetown, and Tennessee’s Glory Johnson and Meighan Simmons. Johnson had her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 12 boards, while Simmons scored 11 points. Georgetown came into the game shooting just 27-percent from three, but hit three treys in the first two minutes, 15 seconds of the game and raced out to a 29-22 lead at halftime. Georgetown stretched the lead to as much as 17 points, 5942 in the second half when point guard Rubylee Wright found Alexa Roche for a layup on a backdoor play with 7:14 left in the game. The Lady Vols fought back to within nine, 65-56, with 59 seconds left in the game on a layup by Johnson, but the Hoyas, who never trailed, held on for the victory. UTLADYVOLS.COM

ST. THOMAS, USVI -- Just before the start of the second half on Friday night, the power went off and it took several minutes for the lights to come back on at the University of the Virgin Islands’ Sports and Fitness Center. With 11:28 remaining in the contest, they went out again. And again two more times in the second half. The fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team had already said good night to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets long before the first blackout, however, racing out to a 46-17 halftime lead en route to a 66-42 victory in the “Reef Division” of the Paradise Jam tournament in a game that gave new meaning to “Black Friday.” An island-wide power outage caused delays of 13:32, 11:30, 10:45 and 7:45 for a 43:15 total delay. Relying heavily on its zone defense, Tennessee (6-0) held the Yellow Jackets (3-4) to just one field goal over a 13-minute, 28-second span of the first half and rattled off a 27-2 spurt before the halftime buzzer. No Yellow Jacket reached double figures in scoring and junior forward Glory Johnson grabbed a career-best 18 boards and scored a game-high 15 points. Tennessee led 12-11 before junior point guard Shekinna Stricklen blocked a Tyuanna Marshall layup, grabbed the rebound, pushed the ball past half court and pulled up for a three-pointer to spark the 27-2 run. Freshman Meighan Simmons continued her stellar start, scoring 14 points.

ST. THOMAS, USVI -- The fourth-ranked University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first five minutes, 15 seconds of the opening stanza and never looked back, racing to an 82-44 victory over Missouri in its first game of the “Reef Division” at the 2010 Paradise Jam tournament at the University of the Virgin Islands’ Sports and Fitness Center. The Lady Vols improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Tigers drop to 1-2. All 10 Lady Vols that played made a basket, and Meighan Simmons was UT’s leading scorer with 14 points. The 5-9 freshman from Cibolo, Texas, has now started her career off by reaching double figures in her first five collegiate games. Raeshara Brown, of Missouri, led all scorers with 18 points, but the rest of the Tigers couldn’t muster anything offensively. UT used stifling defense throughout the game to hamper Missouri’s attack throughout the game. The Tigers missed six of their first seven shot attempts, and committed 15 turnovers to just four for the Lady Vols in the first half. After racing out to an 11-2 lead behind three buckets by 6-6 junior center Kelley Cain, the Lady Vols allowed six straight Tigers’ points. Tennessee answered by going on a 17-3 run to take a commanding 28-11 lead. The Lady Vols scored 10 straight points to open the second half, taking a 53-24 lead at the 17:19 mark. Tennessee finished the game shooting 50.8 percent, while holding the Tigers to 34.1 percent from the field.

GAME 9: OLD DOMINION
GAME 8: LAMAR KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Meighan Simmons opened the game with consecutive 3-pointers. When the final buzzer sounded, the freshman had broken Tennessee’s single-game record for 3s, most recently set by teammate Angie Bjorklund. Simmons, making her first career start at point guard, scored 28 points and sank her eighth and final 3 with 2:03 left as the Lady Volunteers (No. 8 ESPN/USA Today, No. 9 AP) beat Lamar 99-55 on Dec. 1. She surpassed the previous record of seven, most recently set by Bjorklund against Arkansas on Jan. 24, 2008. Tennessee (7-1) jumped out to a 12-0 lead. Lamar, a team that returned three starters from last year’s squad that reached the NCAA tournament, missed its first nine shots before Monique Whittaker hit a layup with 15:12 left in the half. Lamar had problems hanging onto the ball, committing 29 turnovers that led to 33 points for Tennessee, which also got 26 second-chance points by outrebounding the Lady Cardinals 5440. The Lady Vols’ early points came mostly from the perimeter and mostly from Simmons, who had 17 points by halftime on 6-of-10 shooting and five 3s. The Lady Cardinals (5-2) couldn’t keep up, and Tennessee took a 49-27 lead into halftime. After the break, Simmons cooled off a bit, giving her teammates a chance to light up the scoreboard. Shekinna Stricklen fought her way into the paint, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Kamiko Williams had 13 points, and Glory Johnson had 12 rebounds. Tennessee pulled away in the second half and led by as many as 45 with 2:10 left as Lamar shot 30.6 percent. Ang Green led the Lady Cardinals with 15 points.

NORFOLK, Va. -- Meighan Simmons tied Candace Parker by reaching double figures in her first nine collegiate games and the No. 9/8 Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team used a debilitating full-court pressure to rout Old Dominion, 74-44, on Dec. 5 in front a record crowd of 7,774 at the Ted Constant Center. The Lady Vols (8-1) made 13 steals, forced 22 turnovers and scored 20 points off of the Lady Monarchs’ (3-3) givebacks. Junior forward Alicia Manning and sophomore guard Kamiko Williams led the stellar defensive effort by recording three steals apiece, as ODU shot just 30.9 percent from the field. While Manning and Williams reeked havoc on the defensive end, Simmons continued her fantastic offensive play this season. The Cibolo, Texas, native made a fade-away jumper with her body angled behind the hoop before barely beating the halftime buzzer with a running bank shots to give her 11 at the intermission. She finished with 14 and is one game away from tying Glory Johnson, who started her career with 10 double-figure scoring games. Chamique Holdsclaw (14 games) is the only other Lady to start her career on such a prolific pace. Tennessee’s first basket of the second half didn’t come until the 16:34 mark when Angie Bjorklund drilled a threepointer to put Tennessee ahead 45-26. Bjorklund scored Tennessee’s first eight points of the second half. Old Dominion senior guard Jasmine Parker became the 28th Lady Monarch to score 1,000 career points. She scored a game-high 16 points.

GAME 10: TEXAS AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior guard Angie Bjorklund exploded for 20 points in the first half to lead the No. 8/7-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team to a 92-77 victory over No. 21/24 Texas in a run-and-gun affair at the Erwin Center. After missing her first four shot attempts, Bjorklund didn’t flinch. She made eight of her next 10 field goal tries, including four threes to lead UT to a 48-42 halftime advantage. At many times in the first half, it was Bjorklund and Texas’ Kathleen Nash, trading three-point bombs. Nash had 16 firsthalf points and also made four treys before the intermission. She finished with 21 points and five threes to pace the Longhorns, who used only seven players and tired in the second half. Texas kept in close early in the first half, tying the game at 11-11 five minutes into the contest, before a Bjorklund three ignited a 9-0 run and a lead UT would never relinquish. Bjorklund didn’t score after halftime, but the Lady Vols didn’t need her to, as Tennessee outrebounded Texas, 25-15 in the second half. Freshman Meighan Simmons scored 18 points in her return to her home state, while Kamiko Williams scored a season-high 14 points in a career-high 37 minutes and Glory Johnson tallied 13. Junior Shekinna Stricklin started the game at the four spot and finished with her third double-double of the season (10 pts, 11 rebs), but it was her behind-the-head no-look flick to Williams for a layup that sealed the win with three minutes left in the game, putting UT ahead 90-69.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Shekinna Stricklen became the 35th Lady Vol to score 1,000 career points and Angie Bjorklund tied the UT career three-pointers mark, as the No. 5/6-ranked Tennessee women’s basketball team ran away from ETSU with a dominant second half, 102-53, on Dec. 22. The Lady Vols led the Lady Bucs 46-32 at the intermission, but made 16 of their first 19 shots after halftime to blow the game open. UT shot a season-best 60 percent (21-35) in the second half and outscored ETSU, 56-21. Stricklen finished with seven points, and reached the 1,000-point plateau at the 16:19 mark in the first half. Bjorklund tied the Lady Vol career three-pointers record with her 266th trey at the 12:30 mark of the second half. She scored 16 points and made 4-of-6 from behind the arc, as six Lady Vols reached double figures and Tennessee won at home for the 25th consecutive time. Taber Spani scored a season-high 15 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds – doubling her previous career-best on the glass – for her first career double-double. Kelley Cain nabbed season-highs of 12 points, 10 boards and four blocks in 17 minutes. She tallied her first double-double of 2010-11 and the seventh of her career. Cain had four blocks in just over a minute late in the first half – from 2:05-:52. Also reaching double figures were Glory Johnson (15), Meighan Simmons (13) and Alica Manning (11). Tennessee opened the second half on a 7-0 run to stretch its lead to 53-32. ETSU didn’t make a shot in the second half until the 16:21 mark. A 13-0 run sparked by a Spani jumper at 14:43 in the second half and capped by a Spani layup (13:06) put UT up 72-40. UTLADYVOLS.COM

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- An ice-in-the-veins three-pointer by freshman guard Meighan Simmons with 48 seconds sent the sixth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team to its 41st all-time overtime contest where it would not be denied, defeating No. 3/2 Stanford, 82-72, in front of 14,197 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Tennessee redshirt junior center Kelley Cain missed a pair of free throws with just under three minutes remaining in the extra period, but she rebounded her own miss and put back a layup to put the Lady Vols up 75-70 in what turned out to be a pivotal play of the game as the Lady Vols outscored the Cardinal 12-2 and forced the team into 0-for-6 shooting from the field in the bonus frame Coincidentally, UT’s previous two overtime games had come against Stanford with the Lady Vols taking down the Cardinal in the last matchup in Knoxville, 79-69, on Dec. 21, 2008. Tennessee raced out to a 16-6 lead and made five of its first six three-point attempts to go up by as much as 14 points in the first half (30-16). However, Stanford fought back behind senior guard Jeanette Pohlen, who scored a game-high 24 points and made six treys before fouling out in overtime. Pohlen made four threes in the second half, including a trey that put the Cardinal, which shot 62.5 percent in the second half, ahead, 59-55, with 8:12 left in the game. Stanford stretched its lead to 63-57 before Tennessee used an 8-0 run to take a 65-63 lead on a layup by sophomore Taber Spani with 4:41 left. Pohlen hit her sixth three to put Stanford up 70-67 with 1:07 remaing, but Simmons answered on UT’s next possession and the Lady Vols’ defense stepped up in overtime. Simmons finished with 23, while senior Angie Bjorklund (16), junior Shekinna Stricklen (15) and Spani (10) also reached double figures.

WACO, Texas -- The No. 6-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team was held to a season-low 25.0 percent shooting from the field, as No. 2/3 Baylor slugged out a 65-54 victory in front of a sold-out crowd at the Ferrell Center. Despite making just 18-of-72 shot attempts, the Lady Vols were within nine points of the Lady Bears until the last minute of the game thanks to a 53-43 edge on the boards. The Lady Vols dominated the glass, but could not contain Baylor’s sophomore star Brittney Griner. The 6-8 center scored 16 points, grabbed five boards and tallied six blocks by halftime. Baylor led 23-21 before going on an 11-0 run to end the first half. The Lady Bears held the Lady Vols without a field goal the final 5:23 of the first stanza to take a commandeing 34-21 lead. After intermission, UT came out fighting, scoring the first six points of the quarter on a Glory Johnson free throw, a layup by freshman Meighan Simmons and a three by Simmons. UT’s last ditch effort came when Simmons was fouled twice while attempting threes in the last two minutes. She made all six free throws to cut Baylor’s lead to 62-53. However, the Lady Vols didn’t hit another field goal the rest of the way. Simmons scored 22 points on 6-of-21 shooting, while senior Angie Bjorklund was the only other Lady Vol to reach double figures, scoring 10, as UT recorded season-lows for points (54) and assists (5). Junior Shekinna Stricklen had 11 boards, but shot 1-of-9 from the field and committed six turnovers. Griner finished with 21 points, seven boards and nine blocks for Baylor, while freshman Odyssey Sims scored a career-best 24.

GAME 14: RUTGERS KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 5/6-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team got record-setting performances from senior guard Angie Bjorklund and sophomore forward Taber Spani, as UT paid tribute to Melissa McCray-Dukes with a dominating 8751 win over Rutgers on Dec. 30 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Bjorklund set the Lady Vol career record for three-pointers with her 267th trey at the 18:34 mark in the first half. She finished with 11 points and increased her career-leading mark to 268 treys. Spani scored a career-high 22 points in her fifth start of the season. Tennessee improved to 11-0 all-time when Spani reaching double figures. The story of the game, however, was the Lady Vols’ tribute to Melissa McCray-Dukes. McCray-Dukes, who was a starter on Tennessee’s first two national championship teams in 1987 and 1989, passed away on Dec. 27 after a hard fought battle with breast cancer. For the Rutgers game, the Lady Vols wore black No. 35 patches on their shorts honoring McCray-Dukes. Tennessee came out playing with an intensity that would’ve made McCray-Dukes, a tenacious defender in her day, proud. UT jumped out to a 30-12 lead at the 9:23 mark after three consecutive layups by junior forward Alicia Manning and a three by Spani. After Rutgers fought back behind the play of April Sykes (15 points) to make the score 40-29 at the intermission, Tennessee came out on fire to start the second half. The Lady Vols scored the first nine points after halftime and never looked back, shooting 57.7 percent for the final 20 minutes. UT’s depth was especially impressive as the Lady Vol bench held a 24-1 scoring advantage against the undermanned Scarlet Knights, who dressed only nine players and were without Sykes for much of the second half because of cramps. 72
BATON ROUGE, La. -- Depth was the difference for No. 5/6 Tennessee in the 73-65 win over LSU on Jan. 2 in the Southeastern Conference season opener at the PMAC. Despite not making a three-pointer in a game for the first time in 422 games - a streak that dated back to Jan. 21, 1999, the Lady Vols got 40 bench points and shot 50 percent overall from the field for the third consecutive game. Leading the way off the bench for UT was junior forward Glory Johnson. The 6-3 Knoxville, Tenn., native was one rebound shy of a double-double at halftime and finished with a season-best 19 points and 15 boards. She made 8-of13 shots and combined with redshirt junior Kelley Cain for Tennessee’s finest post performance of the season. Cain, who started, made 9-of-13 field goals to tie a career-high with 19 points, while adding eight boards and four blocks. The play of sophomore guard Kamiko Williams (13 points) and junior forward Alicia Manning (eight points, four offensive boards) was vital for the Lady Vols, as starters Angie Bjorklund and Taber Spani were both held scoreless. While the Lady Vols went 0-fo-7 from behind the arc, they were stellar from the free throw line shooting a season-best 82.6 percent (19-23). Tennessee held LSU scoreless for a nearly four-minute stretch of the first half (9:05 to 5:15), going on a 13-0 run to take a 27-20 lead. Trailing 20-14, Johnson scored seven straight points to propel the run. Cain capped the run with a layup with 5:33 left before halftime. LSU went on a 6-2 run after halftime to come within two points, but Tennessee answered with a 12-0 run started by back-to-back Cain buckets.

GAME 16: ALABAMA KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- A perfect shooting night from senior Angie Bjorklund and a Lady Vol freshman assists record from Meighan Simmons keyed the No. 5/6-ranked Tennessee women’s basketball team’s highest scoring output since 2002, as UT routed Alabama, 110-45, on Jan. 6 at Thompson-Boling Arena. After being held scoreless at LSU on Jan. 2, Bjorklund exploded for 16 first-half points on 5-of-5 shooting, including four treys, to lead the Lady Vols to a commanding 58-22 halftime advantage. Alabama actually held the lead - briefly - in the game when Erica Russell made a three to put UA up 3-2 at the 18:57 mark in the first half. Tennessee held the Crimson Tide scoreless for the next 6:57, however, as Bjorklund made a trio of treys to spark a 22-0 Big Orange run that put Tennessee ahead, 24-3, just eight minutes into the contest. Simmons had five assists in the game-breaking run, nine at halftime and finished with 11 dimes, becoming the first Lady Vol rookie to reach double figures in shares. She added 15 points to become just the 10th Lady Vol to record a points-assists doubledouble. With Simmons wheeling and dealing and Bjorklund, as well as sophomore Taber Spani, hitting nothing but net in the first half, Tennessee set season bests for points (58) and shooting percentage (59.4) before the intermission. Spani finished with 15 points and a career-best five assists, including a full court bomb to Simmons for a layup in the second half. Junior Alicia Manning had 11 points and went 9-of-9 from the free throw line, while classmate Glory Johnson scored a seasonhigh 19 points off the bench for the second straight game. Sophomore Kamiko Williams swatted four shots and Kelley Cain had three blocks as UT recorded a season-high 12 putbacks. Led by Manning, Tennessee made 31-of-37 free throws for a season-best 83.8 percentage.

GAME 19: VANDERBILT KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 5/6-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball won it’s 29th consecutive game at Thompson-Boling Arena in front of a season-high crowd of 17,853 when in-state rival Vanderbilt traveled to Knoxville on Jan. 15. In the nightcap of ESPN’s first-ever GameDay doubleheader, and on just one day of rest, the Lady Vols defeated the Commodores, 68-56. Junior Glory Johnson reached double figures for the seventh straight game, scoring 14 points and grabbing nine boards off the bench. Senior Angie Bjorklund also netted 14 points, while freshman Meighan Simmons tallied a team-best 17 points. The pair, however, combined to shoot just 11 of 31 from the field, including 8 for 26 from behind the arc. UT’s perimeter heavy offense allowed the Commodores back in the game late. Vanderbilt was down by as many as 22 in the second half, but cut Tennessee’s lead down to eight with just over a minute to go. VU outscored UT in the paint, 22-16, as junior center Kelley Cain was held to just four points on 1-for-5 shooting. Cain did, however, snag a season-best 13 rebounds and block four shots. Cain’s effort on the glass led the Lady Vols to a 52-39 edge on the boards. The Lady Vols raced out to a 21-5 lead at the 7:53 mark in the first half despite making just two of their first 13 shots. The Commodores started even worse from the field, missing 20 straight shots over a 9:23 span and allowing Tennessee to make an 18-0 run in the first half. Vanderbilt shot just 7-for-37 from the field in the first half for a shooting percentage of 18.9 percent – the worst by an opponent in the first half this season. For the game, Vandy shot 33.3 percent, as Tennessee held its seventh straight opponent below 40 percent shooting from the field.

HISTORY
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- After back-to-back blowout wins over SEC opponents in Knoxville, the No. 5/6 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team expected a stiffer test on the road against Florida. Instead, UT got more of the same, hammering Florida, 83-40, at the O’Connell Center. The Gator’s 40 points are the lowest scored by a UT opponent since San Francisco scored just 34 against the Lady Vols in Knoxville on Dec. 22, 2009. Tennessee raced to an 11-3 lead to start the game behind two quick baskets by redshirt junior Kelley Cain and a three and a layup from senior Angie Bjorklund, who scored all 16 of her points before intermission. Tennessee ended the first half on a 25-4 run over the last 11 minutes of the first half. Seven different Lady Vols scored during the run, which was capped by a three-pointer from Simmons just five seconds before the intermission buzzer. UT held Florida to just one field goal – a three pointer by Brittany Shine at the 2:49 mark – over that first half 11-minute stretch to take a commanding 47-15 lead into the break. The game was so lopsided at halftime that Tennessee had more three pointers (7) than Florida had field goals (6). The second half evoked more the same. UT scored 10 consecutive points after a Florida three to start the second stanza, and the route was on. In its last three games, Tennessee is outscoring its opponents by an average of 49.3 points per contest. Junior Shekinna Stricklen recorded her second straight double double with 11 points and 12 boards, as classmate Glory Johnson finished with 12 points, nine boards and three blocks.

THE SEC
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Shekinna Stricklen took her coach’s advice. After a one-on-one meeting with Lady Vol head coach Pat Summitt, where the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history told the 6-2 guard/forward she should be an All-American, Stricklen responded with her best effort of the season in leading No. 5/6 Tennessee to am 86-46 victory at Thompson-Boling Arena. Stricklen tied a season-high with 18 points and grabbed a season-best 13 rebounds for her 10th career double double and fourth of the 2010-11 campaign. Stricklen made 3-of-5 three-point attempts, and her performance on the offensive end and on the glass sparked Tennessee to its fifth consecutive 50.0 percent or better shooting performance and a resounding 53-31 advantage on the boards. The Lady Vols were stout on the defensive end from the opening tip, holding UM without a field goal until the 14:29 mark in the first half. The Lady Vols took some time to get going too, though. It wasn’t until 9:30 left in the first half that UT finally hit the gas pedal. After Ole Miss point guard Valencia McFarland’s jumper brought the Rebels within four, 16-12, the Lady Vols responded by scoring 12 straight points to go ahead 28-14 on a Kamiko Williams putback at the 5:35 mark. Leading 42-22 at halftime, Tennessee continued to dominate in the second half, as freshman Meighan Simmons contributed 16 of her 18 points after intermission, and UT held Ole Miss without a field goal for over five minutes (12:08-7:04). Perhaps the most impressive stat on the day for the Lady Vols, who won their 28th straight home game - both the nation’s fourthlongest streak and the fourth-longest streak in UT history, was 4-for-23. That’s what the Lady Vols held Ole Miss’ start guard Kayla Melson to from the field, holding the SEC’s fourth-leading scorer to just 10 points a game after erupting for a career-high 30 in a win over Vanderbilt.

GAME 20: SOUTH CAROLINA COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Do-it-all junior Shekinna Stricklen’s third double double in four games and a 16-point second-half explosion from star rookie Meighan Simmons led the No. 5/6-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team past a feisty South Carolina squad on Jan. 20 at Colonial Life Arena. The Lady Vols had six turnovers and shot just 2-of-8 in the first five minutes of the game, and were trailing 12-4, as the undersized Gamecocks applied relentless pressure. UT quickly righted its ship, however, holding USC scoreless for nearly seven minutes of the first half and using an 11-0 run to take a 15-12 lead on a Taber Spani trey with 9:22 remaining until intermission. In a seesaw first half, senior Angie Bjorklund sent the Lady Vols to locker room with a 33-26 halftime lead after drilling an off-thedribble three to beat the buzzer. After the break, Simmons’got rolling, scoring her first points of the game on an “And-1” layup three minutes into the final stanza to put UT ahead by double figures, 40-30, for the first time in the game. Simmons continued to light it up throughout the final 20 minutes, shooting 5-of-9, including 1-for-1 on treys and making all five of her free throw attempts in a tight game. South Carolina hung around till the game’s end, cutting UT’s lead to just five points, 57-52, when Markesia Grant pickpocketed Simmons for a fastbreak layup with 4:57 left in the game. Free throws from Simmons and putbacks from Stricklen and redshirt junior center Kelley Cain down the stretch kept the Lady Vols in control despite committing 24 turnovers. Stricklen finished with a season-high 18 points and a careerbest 16 boards. Cain joined her teammate with her eighth career double double (11 points and 11 boards) to go along with a season-best six blocks. Spani was huge in the first half, scoring all nine of her points on 3-for-4 shooting from downtown, as Tennessee’s 55.6 percent three-point shooting (5-9) for the game was its best this season.

GAME 21: AUBURN AUBURN, Ala. -- Playing in front of their largest crowd ever at Auburn Arena, the Auburn Tigers had no answer for No. 5/6-ranked Tennessee’s size and depth, losing 73-53 in front of 7,536 fans. The Lady Vols held a commanding 38-20 edge on the boards and scored 26 bench points. Junior forward Glory Johnson came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 13 rebounds for her fifth double double of the season, while classmate Shekinna Stricklen tied a season-best with 18 points for the second straight game. Redshirt junior Kelley Cain was her usual dominant self, punishing the Tigers to the tune of nine points and 10 boards in the first half. She didn’t score after the break, but finished with 12 boards, three blocks, three steals and three assists. The play of Cain, Johnson and Stricklen in the paint enabled UT to weather a poor shooting performance from its backcourt and a 6:37 first half stretch without a field goal. The Lady Vols’ top three guards, senior Angie Bjorklund, freshman Meighan Simmons and sophomore Kamiko Williams shot a combined 0-for-6 before the intermission. Bjorklund scored seven points in the second half, Simmons added five and Williams dished four assists, but the real star of the final 20 minutes was rs-junior Vicki Baugh. Baugh scored nine points in just seven minutes. It was the most points she had scored since Feb. 3, 2009. Stricklen paced the Lady Vols early on. She drilled her second three with 10:34 left in the first half to put Tennessee up, 22-12, and gave herself a dozen points after starting the game 5-of-6 from the field. However, UT didn’t make a field goal again until 3:57 to go in the first half. A 7-0 run sparked by a three from sophomore Taber Spani gave Tennessee a 34-19 lead at the break. After the intermission, UT quickly went ahead 46-26 on a bucket by Spani, but Auburn refused to be blown out. UT had another fantastic defensive effort, holding its ninth straight opponent below 40 percent shooting. The win was also UT’s 10th straight since falling at Baylor on Dec. 14.

GAME 22: MISSISSIPPI STATE KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Whatever Lady Vol head coach Pat Summitt said at halftime worked. After trailing at the break for just the third time this season, the No. 5/6-ranked Tennessee women’s basketball team exploded for 18 consecutive points after the intermission en route to an 8155 victory over Mississippi State on Jan. 27 at Thompson-Boling Arena. UT stayed perfect in the SEC (8-0) and at home (11-0) in 201011, while pushing its TBA winning streak to 30 games. With starters Angie Bjorklund (foot injury) and Kelley Cain (flu) out for the game, junior Glory Johnson was called to start for the first time since the ETSU game on Dec. 22. The 6-3 forward responded with the finest game of her career, tallying career bests in scoring (22 points), blocks (four) and assists (seven) while tying her best mark in rebounding (18). She had a double double in the first half (her sixth this season) and made 8-of-14 shots. Despite Johnson’s dominant performance, the Lady Vols struggled to defend in the first half. Mississippi State shot 58.3 percent from three in the first half and went ahead by as many as eight points, 33-25, on Porsha Porter’s third trey with 3:54 left in the first half. Tennessee opened the second half on an 18-0 run, while holding the Lady Bulldogs without a point for the first 5:49 of the second half. Freshman Meighan Simmons made a three 10 seconds after the break and UT never looked back. Simmons finished with 12 points on 5-of-17 shooting, while sophomore Taber Spani scored 18 on her 20th birthday. Sophomore Kamiko Williams scored 10 points and Shekinna Stricklen tallied her seventh double double of the season (10 pts and 10 boards) to go along with four steals. UT won its 20th game for the 35th straight season.

GAME 25: FLORIDA KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Despite shooting just 38.5 percent from the field, the fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team was able to secure another blowout victory in the SEC with a 61-39 triumph over Florida on Feb. 10. Returning to Thompson-Boling Arena for the first time in two weeks, the Lady Vols came out flat, making just 9 of 27 field goals in the first half. Despite the poor shooting half, UT still led 27-18 at the break behind its strong defense. Florida shot just 21.9 percent in the first half and 25 percent for the game, as UT forced 24 turnovers and turned those miscues into 27 points. The Lady Vols held the Gators to a 2010-11 season opponent-low of 39 points - the lowest total by a UT opponent since San Francisco tallied just 34 points on Dec. 22, 2009. As has been the common thread for the team lately, junior Shekinna Stricklen and Glory Johnson led the Lady Vols in scoring with 17 and 16 points, respectively. Stricklen was instrumental in Tennessee’s two big runs that clinched the game. After Florida took a 7-4 lead on a Ndidi Madu layup at the 15:16 mark, the Lady Vols went on a 14-0 run sparked by treys from Stricklen and sophomore Taber Spani to take an 18-7 lead just over 10 minutes into the contest. UT’s stingy defense held the Gators scoreless until the 9:32 mark after the Madu layup - a five-minute, 44-second span. UT opened the second half on all cylinders, scoring 12 straight points right out of the break. Stricklen had a couple of steals and a pair of assists on Glory Johnson layups during the game-breaking spurt that put Tennessee ahead, 39-18 with 16:37 left in the game. Florida head coach Amanda Butler tried to stop the run with two timeouts in the first three minutes of the second fram, but it was all for naught, as UT cruised to 14th straight victory and moved to 11-0 in the SEC. Stricklen scored 12 of her game-high 17 in the first half, making 4-of-5 shots from the field. She added four assists and three secondhalf steals. Redshirt junior Vicki Baugh also had great game, grabbing seven boards and dishing three assists in just 13 minutes. Freshman Lauren Avant added a career-best seven points.

HISTORY
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team shook off 17 first half turnovers and used a hot shooting second stanza and a commanding edge on the glass to defeat the No. 15/18-ranked Kentucky Wildcats at Memorial Coliseum on Feb. 7. In their first game in over a week, the Lady Vols were flustered early on by Kentucky’s opportunistic frantic press in the game’s first 20 minutes. Led by reigning SEC Player of the Year Victoria Dunlap, who made her first three shots - including just her fourth trey of the season, the Wildcats jumped out to an 11-4 lead before the first media timeout. An 8-0 run just after the 15:30 mark in the first half sparked by a pair of double-clutch finishes from reserve guard Kamiko Williams placed the Lady Vols back into the game. A back and forth first half gave UK a 33-30 advantage at halftime, and the Wildcats led for the first three minutes of the second frame. That’s when junior guard/forward Shekinna Stricklen went to work, however. Stricklen gave UT its first lead, 38-36, of the second half on a three with 16:55 left in the game. After scoring just two points in the first half, Stricklen exploded for 18 after the break, notching her eighth double double of the season in the process with 20 points and 12 rebounds. She paced an offense that made 61.2 percent of it’s second half shots and a season-best 55.8 percent overall for the game. The bulk of Stricklen’s points came during a blistering 16-2 run by the Big Orange that gave the Lady Vols a 48-38 lead with just under 14 minutes remaining. Behind a season-high home crowd of 7,192, the Wildcats didn’t back down, though. In the blink of an eye, UK was back within one after A’dia Mathies made back-to-back three-pointers to make the score 54-53 with 9:43 left in the contest. UT, which held a ridiculous 45-23 edge on the glass, snatched up nearly every miss down the stretch. No board was bigger than Stricklen’s putback of her own miss that gave the Lady Vols a 67-61 lead with 2:15 left in the game. Still, Kentucky was within two points, 67-65, with 14.5 seconds remaining, but freshman Meighan Simmons made a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game. Simmons suffered nine turnovers, but didn’t wilt under the pressure, finishing with 15 points. Williams also tied a season-best with 14 points, while junior forward Glory Johnson nabbed her fourth straight double double.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Junior forward Shekinna Stricklen was glad to be home. The 6-2 Morrilton, Ark., native tied a career-high with 26 points, while leading the No. 5/6-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team to a 72-53 victory at Bud Walton Arena on Jan. 30. She finished 10-of-15 from the field and 6-of-9 from three to go along with four boards. Her 10 field goals tied a career best, while the six three-pointers set a new personal best. Sophomore wing Taber Spani also put on a show for family and friends who traveled from Lee’s Summitt, Mo., to see her play. She scored 18 points, including three treys. Sophomore Kamiko Williams added 10 points, while junior Glory Johnson recorded her third consecutive double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, as well as three steals. With close to 60 family and friends making the short drive to Fayetteville, Stricklen shot out of the start like a cannon, making her first four field goal attempts, including her first three trey tries. Her third trey of the game gave Tennessee a 16-12 lead with 11:21 remaining in the first half. Arkansas kept it close in the first half behind guard C’eira Ricketts (12 points) and center Sarah Watkins (15 points), but UT capped the first half with an impressive run. The Lady Vols exploded for eight straight points in under a minute towards the end of the first half to take a 39-27 lead into the break. A three-point swish from Spani at 2:13 sparked the run. She followed with another long jumper, before Stricklen capped the run with her fourth trey of the opening half with 1:17 to go before the intermission. Stricklen had 18 points in the first half which tied her previous season best. The Razorback made a brief run early in the second half, closing UT’s advantage to four points with 15:11 left in the game behind big three’s from Watkins and Lyndsay Harris. The Lady Vols answered with an 11-3 run, however, and held UA to just six second half paint points and 33.9 percent shooting for the game.

GAME 26: VANDERBILT NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer squad came out flat in its third game in seven days at Vanderbilt on Feb. 13, but still captured a 65-57 victory over the Commodores to improve to 12-0 in the SEC. UT scored just 15 points on 5-of-25 shooting (season-low 20 percent) in the first half and trailed Vanderbilt, 28-15. It was third lowest scoring half in Lady Vol history behind the 13 points UT scored at Rutgers on Jan. 3, 2009 and the 14 they managed versus Virginia in the NCAA Regional Finals on March 25, 1996. Tennessee came back and won both of those contests, as well. After an intense halftime speech from Summitt, the Lady Vols played much better in the second half, shooting 51.5 percent (17-for-33) and outscoring Vanderbilt, 50-29, over the final 20 minutes. The Lady Vols used a 16-3 run in the final frame to take control of the game after trailing by 13 at the break - tying for UT’s worst halftime deficit of the season that came at Baylor on Dec. 14. Freshman Lauren Avant, in only her 10th game of the season because of injury and illness setbacks, was the comeback’s catalyst, scoring six straight points over a 32-second span to pull UT within one point, 42-41 with 7:33 left in the contest. She also had three second-half steals in 17 minutes after the break and finished with a career-best 11 points in 20 minutes. Classmate Meighan Simmons hit a three-pointer with 5:54 left in the game and gave Tennessee a 44-42 advantage - its first lead since being up 5-2 four minutes into the game. The game-clinching play came from reserve junior post Lyssi Brewer. Like Avant, Brewer had missed over half the season’s games, but she came up big against the Commodores. Brewer made a layup and then poked the ball away from VU’s Jence Rhoads right to Simmons who found Brewer for the fastbreak score to put UT up 55-49 with 2:30 left in the game. Brewer finished with a season-best five points, while junior Shekina Stricklen tallied 14 points and nine boards and junior Glory Johnson recorded her ninth double-double (10 points and 11 boards) of the season.

GAME 27: SOUTH CAROLINA KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 4-ranked Tennessee clinched at least a share of its 16th SEC regular season championship with an 82-60 victory over South Carolina on Feb. 17 at Thompson-Boling Arena. The Lady Vols improved to 13-0 in the conference and 25-2 overall in a game that was never in doubt. Junior Lyssi Brewer, in her first start of the season, scored a season-best seven points in the game’s first five minutes and five seconds. She also ripped down a season-best 10 boards in 17 minutes. The real star for the Big Orange, however, was junior Alicia Manning. A-Town, her nickname on the team, scored a careerbest 22 points, including her first three trey attempts of the game. Manning hadn’t made a three this season heading into the game. She made 8-of-11 field goal attempts, grabbed five boards and made three steals in 26 minutes. Junior Shekinna Stricklen recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 boards, while Meighan Simmons dropped in 17 points and four assists. Tennessee held the Gamecocks without a field goal for eight minutes and 12 seconds of the first half. After Courtney Newton’s three at the 17:46 mark in the first half, USC didn’t score a bucket until Markeshia Grant hit a three with 9:34 remaining until the break. At that point, the Lady Vols led 21-10 after going on a 17-2 run, while South Carolina struggled from the field. Sophomore Kamiko Williams and Manning made back-to-back trifectas to cap the run. In the second half, UT used a 10-0 run to put the game away. Manning’s third three of the game was followed by a nifty behind-the-back pass from Simmons to Stricklen for a layup that extended Tennessee’s lead to 70-47 with 6:29 left in the game. The win marked UT’s 24th straight conference victory and 16th straight win this season.

GAME 28: GEORGIA KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The fourth-ranked Lady Vol basketball team captured its 16th SEC regular season championship in a dominant 77-44 victory over No. 22/rv Georgia on Feb. 21 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Tennessee improved to 14-0 in the conference with two games remaining. The Lady Bulldogs came into the contest with some momentum, having just moved back into the national rankings after a blowout victory over No. 20 Kentucky and sat second in the SEC standings, three games back of the Lady Vols. However, any question of whether UT would clinch the conference title outright was put to rest in the game’s first few minutes as the Lady Vols raced out to a 10-2 lead as freshman point guard Meighan Simmons drilled a pair of three-pointers in the opening minutes. Later in the first half, sophomore wing Taber Spani swished a 12-footer to cap a 12-3 Tennessee run and put the Lady Vols up, 27-12, with 7:45 left in the first half. The Big Orange effectively ended any hope of a Georgia comeback with an 11-0 run to start the second half that gave the Lady Vols a 51-21 lead after Spani nailed a trey with 15:34 remaining in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs missed their first five shots of the second half and didn’t score a point after the break until the 15:16 mark. Georgia finished the game with a 25.8 shooting percentage and was crushed on the boards, 49-33. Surely pumped up by the return of senior sharpshooter Angie Bjorklund, who missed six games with a foot sprain, the Lady Vols shot 50 percent from the field. Although Bjorklund only scored three points in 11 minutes, the Lady Vols collectively were a scoring force as 10 players made baskets. Simmons led the way with 14 points, while junior Shekinna Stricklen and Spani each tallied 11. Junior Glory Johnson had nine points and nine rebounds and became the 36th Lady Vol to score 1,000 career points on a free throw with 13:26 left in the game.

GAME 31: FLORIDA, SEC TOURNAMENT NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 1-seeded Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team, ranked No. 4/4, shot 69.2 percent in the second half and got a career-high 25 points from junior Glory Johnson en route to a 92-75 win over eighth-seeded Florida on March 4 in the SEC Tournament second round. The Lady Vols move on to the SEC Tourney semifinals on Saturday. The Gators connected on 43.9 percent of their shots and refused to go away, cutting UT’s lead to single-digits as late as under three minutes left in the game. Florida attacked the Lady Vols early in the first half, forcing four early turnovers and holding a 16-14 lead at the second media timeout on a three-pointer by Brittany Shine at 11:37. Back-to-back three-pointers by Stricklen and senior Angie Bjorklund gave the Lady Vols a 20-16 lead at the 10-minute mark in the first half, and Bjorklund’s second trey put the Lady Vols up 33-22 at the 6:20 mark in the first half. Florida scored 10 straight points, however, capped by a Deanna Allen three 2:38 before halftime. Stricklen’s “and-1” layup at 1:36 ended the run and kept the Lady Vols ahead, and UT took a 38-36 lead into the break. After the intermission, Johnson went to work, scoring the first three buckets of the final stanza before one minute and 30 seconds had even ticked off. Johnson’s start set the tone as Tennessee made 18-of-26 second half shots. Junior Alicia Manning had two three-point plays in a span of just over a minute, making an “and-1” layup with 10:51 left in the game and another one a 9:48 to put the Lady Vols up 66-51. Johnson added 11 boards for her 11th double-double of the season and Stricklen had 20 points and seven boards. Brewer had a season-best eight points, while Bjorklund went 3-of-3 from three for nine points. She has made seven consecutive treys.

HISTORY
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The fourth-ranked Lady Vol basketball team ran the table in Southeastern Conference league play, finishing 16-0 with an 80-60 “Senior Day”victory over LSU on Feb. 27 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Juniors Glory Johnson (15 points, 16 rebounds) and Shekinna Stricklen (17 points, 11 rebounds) each recorded their 10th double-doubles of the season, as UT completed an undefeated SEC league play slate for the ninth time in school history. The marksmanship of UT’s only two seniors - guards Angie Bjorklund and Sydney Smallbone - helped the Lady Vols shoot a season-best 9-of-16 (.563) from behind the arc. The pair was sensational in its final regular season home game, combining to go a perfect 6-for-6 on treys. Bjorklund scored 17 points and made all four of her three-point attempts. The Lady Vols’ all-time leading three-point shooter (288) also earned her 110th career start which ties for the 10th most all-time in a Lady Vol career. Smallbone made both her trifecta tries en route to a seasonbest six points. Her first three point swish put the Lady Vols up 7-1 three minutes into the game. The Lady Tigers missed their first six shots and started the contest 1-for-11. Bjorklund and Stricklen broke the game open with 12 straight points during a 1-minute, 30-second span midway through the first half. Bjorklund started the run with a three at the 9:20 mark in the first half and completed the spurt with a four-point play to give the Big Orange a 32-10 advantage with 7:56 left before the break. A little over five minutes later, junior Alicia Manning and Bjorklund connected on back-to-back treys to stretch UT’s lead to 44-20 at the 3:25 mark, but the Tigers capped the half on an 11-0 run. Adrienne Webb and LaSondra Barrett combined to hit three consecutive treys and Barrett made a pair of free throws to make the halftime score 44-31. LSU kept the game close throughout the second half and cut Tennessee’s lead to 67-57 on a three by Courtney Jones with 2:58 left in the game. Manning made two steals in the final minute, however, to seal the victory, which got a final exclamation point when Stricklen hit a three at the buzzer.

THE SEC
OXFORD, Miss. -- The Ole Miss Rebels couldn’t stop the fourth-ranked Lady Vol basketball team on Feb. 24 at the Tad Smith Coliseum. It took Mother Nature to do that. The Lady Vols defeated Mississippi 66-39 in a game that was called with 5:24 left after rain began leaking from the “Tad Pad” roof onto the court. High winds and severe storm conditions put a hole in the coliseum’s roof and the rain showed no signs of letting up when the game was halted. Tennessee was dominant in the paint, holding a 43-15 edge on the boards and a 34-12 edge on points in the paint. UT’s three-headed monster of true post players - Glory Johnson, Lyssi Brewer and Vicki Baugh - combined for 34 points on 13-of-17 shooting and 15 boards. Johnson was the most impressive with 18 points, nine boards and four steals, while Baugh scored a season-best 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting to go along with five boards. During a two-minute span in the second half, Baugh scored seven straight Lady Vol points, including a three-point play with 9:55 left in the game. Johnson scored or assisted on the Lady Vols’ first nine points, making a jumper in the lane and dishing three assists as UT took an early 9-0 lead - capped by a trey from junior Shekinna Stricklen at the 16:46 mark in the first half. Later in the initial frame, the Lady Vols used a 20-2 run to take a commanding 31-7 lead with 8:03 left before halftime. Stricklen sparked the run with her second three at the 15:10 mark in the first half. Johnson capped the run with a putback. Ole Miss cut the Lady Vols’lead to 16 points early in the second half after Shae Nelson hit a three and Valencia McFarland made a layup to make the score 45-29 with 17:53 left in the game. Tennessee responded by scoring four straight points on a jumper from sophomore Taber Spani and a layup by Johnson. Later Baugh had her mini-spurt, and the Lady Vol lead swelled to the point that the game was not in doubt when Johnson attempted a dunk for the second time this season with 7:20 left in the game. Johnson missed the slam, but did end up with AutoZone Player of the Game honors as UT won its 18th straight contest.

GAME 32: GEORGIA, SEC TOURNAMENT SEMIS
GAME 33: KENTUCKY, SEC CHAMPIONSHIP
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team advanced to its 20th SEC Tournament championship game with an 82-58 victory over Georgia on March 5 at Bridgestone Arena. UT, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, jumped out to a 16-2 lead on the Lady Bulldogs, who missed their first 14 field goal attempts, and received and 18-point, five-assist performance from freshman point guard Meighan Simmons en route to the semifinal victory. The win gave the Lady Vols 20 30-win seasons under head coach Pat Summitt and the opportunity to win their 15th SEC Tournament title. Tennessee’s mix-and-match defenses confused Georgia from the start and the Big Orange raced out to a 9-0 lead on a leaner from junior Shekinna Stricklen at the 16:09 mark in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs didn’t make a field goal until Khaalidah Miller buried a three-pointer with 9:52 left until halftime to make the score 16-5. The Lady Vols followed with a scoring drought of their own, however. After Spani’s three at 13:51, the Lady Vols didn’t score for seven minutes and four seconds. Senior Angie Bjorklund hit a jumper at 6:47 to stop the drought. Under 30 seconds later Bjorklund buried a three to put the Lady Vols up 21-9 6:10 before the break. Simmons’ second three put the Lady Vols up 30-13 with three minutes left in the first half and UT took a 35-22 lead into the break. Junior Glory Johnson carried the Lady Vols after the break, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven boards in the second half and finishing with 14 and 9. She made back-to-back “and-1” layups to make the score 63-42 with 10:30 left in the contest. Bjorklund also reached double figures with 10 points and made 2-of-3 three-pointers. She made her first two trey attempts of the game to stretch her streak to nine straight treys without miss before rimming out her third behind-the-arc attempt of the game. Redshirt junior Kelley Cain added three blocks and seven points.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Defense and rebounding wins championships, but sometimes red-hot three-point shooting can help the cause, too. Despite being outrebounded for just the second time this season, the fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team completed the SEC regular season and tournament sweep by burying a school and tournament record16 treys in a 90-65 win over No. 16 Kentucky on March 6 at Bridgestone Arena. The Lady Vols will head into the NCAA Tournament with 22 straight wins - tied for the third-most in program history - after bulldozing the SEC by going 16-0 in the regular season before cruising to the tournament title behind the play of Tournament MVP Shekinna Stricklen and all-tournament team members Glory Johnson and Angie Bjorklund. This marks just the third time the Lady Vols have gone undefeated in SEC league play and won the SEC Tournament, joining the 1993-94 team and 1997-98 squad. Tennessee has won 15 SEC Tournament Championships overall, and this was the first back-to-back run since 2005-06. UT has completed the “daring double” of winning both the regular season and conference titles eight times. Bjorklund went 7-of-8 from three and scored a game-high 23 points against the Wildcats, while Stricklen made 5-of-6 from behind the arc, as UT shot 16-of-21 from trey land and a season-best 56.4 percent overall from the field. UT made its first eight three-point attempts with freshman Meighan Simmons burying a trey for the game’s first points 20 seconds in. The Lady Vols didn’t miss a three until the 3:44 mark in the first half. Leading 39-30 at the half, UT shot 70.4 percent in the second half, opening the final frame with a trey from Stricklen and a fastbreak layup by Alyssia Brewer before 1:05 had elapsed. Stricklen’s fifth three at 13:14 gave Tennessee a 60-42 lead, as the Big Orange was 12-of-13 from behind the arc at that point. A Simmons’ three - Tennessee’s 14th - at 8:12 in the second half broke the SEC Tournament record and put UT up 72-53. Bjorklund’s seventh trey set a new Lady Vol mark of 16 with 2:35 remaining in the game. The previous record of 15 was set twice this season against UTC (Nov. 15) and Lamar (Dec. 1).

GAME 34: STETSON, NCAA FIRST ROUND KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 1-seeded Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team began its NCAA-record 30th consecutive NCAA Tournament run by doing to 16th-seeded Stetson what it had done to most of its opponents this season: dominated. Fourth-ranked Tennessee held the Atlantic Sun tournament champions to just 34 points - an all-time low for a Lady Vol opponent in NCAA Tournament games as well as a season low. The Hatters made just 12-of-66 field goals for 18.2 percent shooting. Stetson’s 12 field goals tied a UT opponent low for an NCAA game, as well. Stetson made it a game for the first five minutes. After Stetson guard Tiarra Brown’s three at 15:13 in the first half made the score, 10-9 in favor of the hosts, Tennessee scored 23 straight points over a four-minute, 23-second span. . Bjorklund started the burst with her second three at the 14:57 mark in the first half and Kelley Cain capped the run with a layup in the paint off a no-look pass from Alicia Manning at the 10:35 mark. The Hatters would go 11 minutes and 12 seconds between field goals in the first half, but were actually worse in the second half, scoring just 14 points on 5-of-34 shooting (14.7 percent). Four Lady Vols scored in double figures, led by 15 points from junior Shekinna Stricklen, as UT cruised to the second round. Junior Glory Johnson recorded a double-double (14 points and 10 boards), junior Lyssi Brewer had a season-high 10 points and senior Angie Bjorklund stayed red hot from three, making 4-of-5 from downtown en route to 13 points and capping spurt where she made 20 of 23 three attempts over five games. UT’s 55.7 percent shooting was just off its season-best, while its 63 rebounds were a 2010-11 high.

GAME 37: NOTRE DAME, DAYTON REGIONAL FINAL DAYTON, Ohio -- The No. 1-seeded Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team’s 2010-11 season came to an end on March 28 at the Dayton Regional Final, as Notre Dame defeated the Big Orange for the first time in 21 chances. The Fighting Irish, who made 18 of 22 free throws, were led by sophomore point guard Skylar Diggins’ 24 points. Both squads traded big runs in the first half. Notre Dame jumped out to an 11-4 lead when Diggins drilled a jumper at 15:40 in the first half. Tennessee followed with a 10-2 spurt to move ahead 14-13 on a Vicki Baugh free throw with 8:06 to go before the intermission. Baugh was a spark for the Big Orange off the bench in the first half with eight points on 3-of-4 shooting in eight minutes. The Irish used an 11-2 run to take a commanding 2719 lead on another Diggins’ jumper at the 2:13 mark. Sophomore Taber Spani swished a three at the buzzer to pull UT within five points, 29-24, at the half despite shooting just 33.3 percent (10-30) from the field in the first half. Diggins made a runner, followed with a trey and capped a 12-4 Notre Dame run with an assist to Natalie Novosel to put the Irish up 41-32 four minutes into the second half and forcedZ Lady Vol head coach Pat Summitt to burn a timeout with 15:49 left in the contest. Tennessee fought back and trailed by only four points when Kelley Cain was whistled for a technical foul at the 5:05 mark. Novosel hit both free throws to push ND’s lead to 53-47. Diggins drilled a three with 4:10 remaining in the game and Devereaux Peters added back-to-back buckets to give Notre Dame a 60-48 at the 3:37 mark. Junior Shekinna Stricklen and Spani each scored 13 points, while junior Glory Johnson collected her 13th double-double of the season. Senior Angie Bjorklund shot a combined 0-for-8 in two games in the Dayton Regional. Still, she capped her career as the Lady Vols’ all-time leader in three-pointers made (305) and attempted (738). HISTORY
DAYTON, Ohio -- Shekinna Stricklen scored 20 points to lead the top-seeded Tennessee Lady Volunteers to an 85-75 win over the fourth-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes in the Dayton Regional Semifinal on Saturday afternoon. Junior center Kelley Cain scored the Lady Vols’ first six points and ended with 16 to record her first doublefigure scoring game since Jan. 20, while freshman guard Meighan Simmons poured in 18 points, dished five assists and had two blocks, including a game-changing swat on an OSU breakaway in the winning effort. Ohio State was a scorching 16-24 (66.7%) from the field in the first half, including 4-7 from three-point range, but Tennessee held tough down the stretch in the opening frame as Stricklen nailed a jumper as the first half expired to cut the Buckeye lead to 42-40 at the break. The second half was a dominating inside performance for the Lady Volunteers. Holding just a 1512 rebound margin at the half, UT crashed the boards consistently in the second stanza, outrebounding OSU 31-17, while holding the Buckeyes to just three secondchance points on five offensive rebounds for the game. Samantha Prahalis led Ohio State with 22 points and seven assists, while Jantel Lavender closed out her OSU career with 19 points and a team-high 10 points to go with five assists and four blocked shots. Brittany Johnson had 16 points and was 4-8 from three-point range. Cain tied the game for the eighth and final time at 46all with 17:42 left in the game. Moments later, Prahalis pulled down a long rebound off a Tennessee miss and was off to the races for an easy layup until Simmons sprinted the length of the court to block the Prahalis layup and shift momentum UT’s way. Nine seconds later, Simmons hit a layup of her own to give the Lady Vols a lead they would never relinquish en route to the 10-point final margin. The UT bench outscored OSU’s by a 22-2 margin, while controlling points in the paint, 42-28, as Tennessee advanced to its 24th Elite Eight.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The first-seeded Tennessee Lady Vol basketball team got all it could handle from eightseeded Marquette in an NCAA Tournament second round contest on March 21 at Thompson-Boling Arena. The fourth-ranked Lady Vols never trailed but allowed the feisty No. 23/25-ranked Golden Eagles to hang around until the final buzzer thanks to timely three-pointers from guard Tatiyiana McMorris and driving scores by All-BIG EAST First Teamer Angel Robinson. A bucket by Robinson brought Marquette within a point, 63-62, with 6:15 left in the game. However, the Lady Vols answered with a 6-0 run. Senior Angie Bjorklund, who struggled for most of the game and shot 2-of-9, hit a crucial contested jumper right after Robinson’s score. Junior Shekinna Stricklen followed with a pair of free throws before classmate Glory Johnson made a layup at the 4:40 mark that forced Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell to take a timeout. With the Golden Eagles threatening down the stretch, UT held underrated opponents to just three field goals in their last 14 attempts of the night. Tennessee led 39-35 at halftime despite getting zero points from Stricklen, the SEC Player of the Year. The Morrilton, Ark., native stepped in the second half, though, finishing with a box score-stuffing 10 points, 10 boards, career-high five blocks, four assists and two steals. Johnson added 16 points, while freshman Meighan Simmons scored 18 points and junior reserve Alicia Manning had 11 points and seven rebounds. The streaky Simmons made three baskets in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the game and had two clutch three’s in the second half. Manning guarded Robinson one-on-one over the final two minutes of the game. On one crucial possession, the Woodstock, Ga., native forced a contested jumper, grabbed the rebounded, was fouled and made two free throws to put UT up, 73-65, with 1:07 left in the game. She added a clutch three in the final minute to seal the victory, Tennessee’s 24th straight - tying for the second most in UT history, and a 29th Sweet 16 appearance.
