Vilmarie Castellvi 2003
Each year, Honda honors the most outstanding female collegiate athletes in the nation with the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program. Winners in each sport are selected annually. In 2003, Tennessee’s Vilmarie Castellvi brought home the prestigious award. Shown at the right, Castellvi was presented with the award and recognized at a home basketball game. Castellvi had a stellar year as a senior in 2003, also garnering ITA National Senior Player of the Year honors and becoming the first Lady Vol to be named SEC Player of the Year. Additionally, Castellvi earned singles and doubles All-American accolades, was First Team All-SEC and made the SEC Academic Honor Roll. Castellvi set the UT singleseason record, winning 45 singles matches to go 45-5, while playing a role in 26 doubles victories.

(S) SEC Tournament (R) NCAA Regional Round (N) NCAA (Round of 16 & up)
HOW THE SEC WAS WON
From 1980-81 and 1984-1989, the SEC Champion was determined by the accumulation of points in an individual flighted tournament. In 1982 and 1983, the SEC experimented with the team dual match format in women’s tennis for the conference tournament. The winner of the tournament was crowned SEC champion. However, after a two-year trial, the SEC went back to a points system in an individual flighted tournament to determine the SEC champion. In 1990, the SEC brought back the a team dual match format in women’s tennis for the conference tournament and a points system was put in place to determine the SEC champion. In 2000, the SEC changed the determination of its tennis champions to the team with the best winning percentage in conference regular-season dual matches (11 matches).
