OUTLOOK
WITH COACH JIM KELSON
ON GARRICK PORTEOUS AND DANNY KEDDIE... Kelson Says:
“I can’t say enough about the job Garrick (Porteous) and Danny (Keddie) have done for our program. They are the ultimate examples of guys who have come into our program and absorbed and taken advantage of all the resources we have to offer here at the University of Tennessee.
“Both of their records of improvement have been remarkable. They certainly have established themselves as some of collegiate golf’s premier players. To be certain, they have both earned their successes.”
ON THE SPRING SCHEDULE... Kelson Says:
“If this is not the best schedule we’ve ever played, it’s certainly one of the best. There are four new tournaments added to our schedule. We went to the Rod Myers, which was a very nice tournament. The Cabo tournament in Mexico – our players thoroughly enjoyed that. We didn’t play very well but it was a great event and a great experience. That was a way for us to reward our outgoing seniors with a trip like that. “The San Diego Intercollegiate is a new tournament co-sponsored by TaylorMade and Lamkin Grips being played at San Diego Country Club. It has super-fast greens and that will be one of the premier tournaments any of our players will have a chance to play in, so we’re really looking forward to that. “And the Collegiate Match Play will be a great tournament at a great golf course. We’ll have the opportunity to play some match play that, hopefully, will prove beneficial to us at the end of the year.”

ON THE FALL SEASON... Kelson Says:
“Obviously, we were very disappointed with our finish this fall. We began with a very fine showing at the Carpet Capital Collegiate and then we just did not play well after that. “We do believe, however, that this team is much improved from three months ago. We have had a couple of players who have made significant strides in their physical games. In short, we feel these changes should pay big dividends for our team.”
SEASON OUTLOOK OUTLOOK
ON THE MACK AND JONNIE DAY GOLF PRACTICE FACILITY... Kelson Says:
“With 28 acres available to practice on, we can create every conceivable shot in the game of golf. We use the three practice holes frequently during our practices to simulate hundreds of different shots and situations.”
COACHES THE VOLS
“This facility has turned out even better than expected. We give a great deal of credit to Mark Gossett and his staff (Nick Farragut, Jeff Wolfenbarger). These guys go above and beyond each day to make sure this facility stays in outstanding condition.
REVIEW HISTORY
Kelson Says:
“Our team’s primary goal is advancing to the NCAA Finals for a fourth consecutive year. Being able to set the school record of consecutive trips to the finals is very important to this team. Obviously for our program, achieving this goal would be a tremendous boost in a variety of ways. “Secondly, we are expecting our team to compete for the SEC championship. After coming so close last year, our team knows it is capable of competing against the best teams on that golf course.
NCAA Championship Finals Participants Each of Last Three Years Arizona State Duke Florida Georgia Tech Illinois Oklahoma State
San Diego Southern California TENNESSEE Texas Texas A&M UCLA
“Most importantly to us, however, is ensuring that our team is doing the right things on a daily basis to give ourselves the best chance to achieve these goals. We increased the difficulty level of our practices to ensure we are training our minds to complete and focus at our highest levels. Additionally, we have increased the intensity of our workouts to ensure our players are in top physical condition.”
ON THE SEC... Kelson Says:
“Our league is pretty much as it’s always been and obviously very strong. Arkansas and Alabama probably are in the top-eight in the country and then after that, there probably are six other teams that are right there from a rankings standpoint. “After finishing third last year, we feel like we really know that golf course well and it sets up for us really well. If we play like we’re capable of playing, we feel we can compete.”
FACILITIES
ON THE SPRING SEASON...
ON THE 2011 RECRUITING CLASS... Kelson Says:
“I said when they signed that this was the finest recruiting class I’ve been able to assemble in my coaching career, and I stand by that. They’re exactly what we are looking for in terms of their commitment, their work-ethic, and their talent is unquestionably there. You never know how it’s all going to turn out in the end, but for three players – I would definitely rank that recruiting class among the top five or six in the country. Hopefully, I prove to be right on this. “All three of those players are extremely long and they drive it very straight, which is a great combination. They have a passion for golf, they’re super-focused and they are coming to the University of Tennessee to win a national championship. Obviously that’s easy to say and extremely difficult to do, but I can’t think of a better mix to work with than these three players. “We’re really excited about them. They were raised very well, they know right from wrong and they are going to come in and absorb, take in our information and be very good listeners. There’s no question our future is bright with those three on board.” UTSPORTS.COM

Jim Kelson has the Tennessee golf program climbing its way to national prominence. The Vols already are a major contender. Last spring, Tennessee was one of just 12 programs in the country to qualify for its third consecutive NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship. At the NCAA finals, UT has placed in the top 25 the last three seasons and six times overall, including a high of 12th in 2009. The current streak of three straight trips to the NCAA finals marks Tennessee’s best run since the Vols advanced to three consecutive from 1995-97. Since 2002, the Vols consistently have been ranked among the top 25 teams in the country. From 2007-09, Tennessee’s average national ranking was 14th. Kelson also has coached UT to 12 consecutive NCAA regionals, extending the school record, and a total of six NCAA finals since 2003. The Vols have captured multiple tournament titles in three of the last five years and four of the last seven. Included was the 2007 SEC Championship, Tennessee’s first league crown in 17 years.
LATE-SEASON SURGE
Last year, UT finished third at the SEC Championship as part of a late-season surge that saw the Vols playing their best golf when it mattered most. But Kelson isn’t settling for simply playing alongside the best programs in golf. 6

“We were proud of our team’s efforts last post-season and their advancement to the finals, but we expect better than 24th place,” Kelson said. “Our program must become significantly better and that is 100 percent my responsibility. “We will continue to make improvements to ensure our program stays on the path of becoming one of the elite teams in the country.” UT was the No. 6 seed at the 2011 NCAA Indiana-Central Regional. Needing a top-five finish to advance to the NCAA finals, the Vols rallied from seventh place and eight strokes behind on the final day to claim a berth in Stillwater, Okla.
NO. 1 RANKING
Kelson’s charges in the fall of 2009 captured the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate for the first time in school history and the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in a scorecard playoff. Those early results pushed the Vols to No. 1 in the Golfstat.com rankings. Kelson was hired in June 1998 has been building this program from the day he arrived on campus. The Vols have won 15 tournament championships in his 13-plus seasons. Five different campaigns produced multiple tourney titles -- 2001-02 (three), 2004-05 (three), 2006-07 (two), 2007-08 (two) and 2009-10 (two). UT also claimed hardware under Kelson in the 1998-99, 2000-01 and 2005-06 seasons. The Vols under Kelson own 44 top-three finishes. One of the highlights was capturing the 2007 SEC Champi-

TENNESSEE MEN’S GOLF /// 2011-12 YEARBOOK
Casey VanDamme arrived on the Tennessee golf scene and made immediate inroads. Now in his third season, VanDamme has helped the Vols equal their best postseason stretch in school history with three consecutive trips to the NCAA Championship Finals for the first time since the mid-1990s. VanDamme took over as assistant coach for the Vols after learning the trade under renowned golf instructor Jim McLean. VanDamme spent seven years at the Jim McLean Golf School in both Palm Springs, Calif., and Traverse City, Mich., becoming the youngest Master Instructor in school history. “Casey joined our staff as a very accomplished pro golf instructor,” Vols head coach Jim Kelson said. “Teaching and instruction have been focal points in our program for several years. These two components are really at the core of our program here at UT.” VanDamme’s teaching experience included working with some of the finest players on the PGA Tour, and he was an on-site teaching professional to a participant in the 2009 PGA Championship. “I continue to be impressed with Casey’s knowledge of the game and his understanding and expertise as a teacher of golf,” Kelson said. “He possesses a thorough and complex understanding of the mechanics of a golf swing, but his methods of teaching and development are simplified for his students. “This unique ability ideally qualifies Casey to be a member of our staff.” VanDamme brought a dozen years of golf instruction to the Vols. In his UT debut season, VanDamme coached three golfers to postseason SEC honors. David Holmes and Robin Wingardh were named to the All-SEC second team, while Jay Vandeventer was a Freshman All-SEC selection. Last year, Wingardh again was named All-SEC second team and Danny Keddie earned Freshman All-SEC honors. VanDamme debuted as a collegiate golfer at Marquette before finishing at Northern Michigan, where he graduated in 2000. He began his tenure under Jim McLean in 1998 while
still playing for the Wildcats. He also played professionally on the NGA Hooters Tour from 2003-04. VanDamme served from 2006-09 as athletics director at Mid Peninsula High School in Rock, Mich., while spending summers since 2005 with the CVD Golf Academy in Glad-

“We’re really excited about them. They were raised very well, they know right from wrong and they are going to come in and absorb, take in our information and be very good listeners. There’s no question our future is bright with those three on board.”

HISTORY
“All three of those players are extremely long and they drive it very straight, which is a great combination. They have a passion for golf, they’re superfocused and they are coming to the University of Tennessee to win a national championship. Obviously that’s easy to say and extremely difficult to do, but I can’t think of a better mix to work with than these three players.

REVIEW
“I said when they signed that this was the finest recruiting class I’ve been able to assemble in my coaching career, and I stand by that. They’re exactly what we are looking for in terms of their commitment, their work-ethic, and their talent is unquestionably there. You never know how it’s all going to turn out in the end, but for three players – I would definitely rank that recruiting class among the top five or six in the country. Hopefully, I prove to be right on this.

Golf Again Tops UT Men’s Team GPA
The Tennessee golf program made it back-to-back semesters with the highest grade-point average of all nine UT varsity teams. UT golfers had a 3.41 GPA for spring 2011 and a 3.45 average in the fall. Also as a squad, Tennessee golf earned All-Academic Team recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America. Two golfers, Justin Walker and Darren Renwick, were named to the SEC’s Spring Academic Honor Roll. Walker, a management major, was on the list for the third time in addition to his inclusion on the SEC’s Freshman Academic Honor Roll after his redshirt season of 2008. Renwick, majoring in logistics, was honored for the second time, also in addition to being on the 2009 freshman academic listing. Renwick later was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for 2011 by the Golf Coaches Association of America. All three of Tennessee’s 2010-11 freshmen -- Danny Keddie, Brandon Rodgers and Marshall Talkington -- were named to the 2011 First-Year SEC Academic Honor Roll. Twice is Nice It’s been more than 20 years, and Eric Rebmann remains the only Vol to earn Academic All-America honors twice, doing so in 1986 and 1987. Rebmann, who majored in finance, lettered for the Vols from 1984-87 and was Academic All-Southeastern Conference three times. He was no slouch with the golf clubs either. As a sophomore in 1985, he fired a 205 to win the Chris Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. He also earned second-team All-SEC honors that season. After his senior year, he finished runner-up at the U.S. Amateur.

The Tennessee Volunteers golf team is fortunate to have playing privileges at three of the top clubs in Knoxville: Holston Hills Country Club, Fox Den Country Club and Cherokee Country Club.
Additionally, the Vols have their choice of several other facilities within an hour of campus.
HOLSTON HILLS COUNTRY CLUB YARDAGE: 7,082 PAR: 72 Located just east of campus on the banks of the Holston River, Holston Hills Country Club is as well-preserved of a Donald Ross course as can be found. Built in 1927, it immediately was recognized as the finest course in the state and retains its lofty status today. It features more than 100 bunkers scattered across the 150-acre property with its Bermuda rough and fast, tricky bentgrass greens. Holston Hills has a long history of hosting prestigious events including the men’s NCAA Championship in 1955 and 1965, USGA Women’s MidAmateur Championship in 2004, the Southern Amateur four times and numerous state competitions. Holston Hills recently was restored to its original design and Golf Digest ranks it as one of America’s top classical courses. 28

Fox Den boasts rollings hills, beautiful wooded areas and long fairway stretches. A complete redesign took place in 2004 to enhance the bentgrass greens and tree-lined, well-bunkered fairways. Water hazards are a factor on the closing 13th, 16th and 18th greens.

CHEROKEE COUNTRY CLUB YARDAGE: 6,472 PAR: 70 Founded in 1907 on hills overlooking the Tennessee River, Cherokee is Knoxville’s most exclusive golf club. Its current layout was designed in the early 1920s by Donald Ross during the pinnacle of his career, and since 2000 the club has restored the course to Ross’ architectural designs and philosophy. The fairways are tight and tree-lined, with fast undulating bentgrass greens. Six difficult par-3 holes provide players with a strong challenge. UTSPORTS.COM

COACHES
The University of Tennessee intends to be the preeminent public research and teaching university linking the people of Tennessee to the nation and the world.
The city has grown into a cosmopolitan area with numerous attractions and more than 500 restaurants. It serves as the headquarters to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the nation’s largest public utility, and is known as a technology corridor of the Southeast. Knoxville is located in the geographical center of the eastern United States and is within a day’s drive of half the nation’s population. TENNESSEE TRADITIONS
During the Mexican War, Gov. Aaron Brown issued a call requesting 2,800 volunteers for military service; he got 30,000 respondents. The Atlanta Constitution was the first to call UT athletes “Volunteers,” after a Tennessee-Georgia Tech football game. The name stuck. SMOKEY
No one is quite sure if UT picked Smokey or if Smokey picked UT. Back in 1953, the UT Pep Club sponsored a contest for a live mascot, and a bluetick hound responded to the crowd with a howl. Today, Smokey IX is famous for leading the Vols through the “T” prior to each home football game. A costumed version of Smokey emerged in the 1970s and was redesigned in 1982 to look more like the dog of today. Known to sport a tuxedo, overalls, or a Big Orange jersey, he’s a top collegiate mascot and a star both on and off the field. THE HILL
The hill is symbolic of higher education in the state. UT, founded in downtown Knoxville in 1794 as Blount College, moved to the Hill in 1828 and quickly grew around it. The main part of UT’s old campus stands on this rising bank above the north shore of the Tennessee River. SCHOOL COLORS
UT’s distinctive orange color was inspired by a small cluster of orange and white daisies on the Hill.

TENNESSEE MEN’S GOLF /// 2011-12 YEARBOOK
In 1889, UT athletics association president Charles Moore spotted the flowers and chose the school’s colors in homage. The colors soon
appeared on athletic uniforms and has permeated nearly every item in East Tennessee, from clothing to cars. THE VOLUNTEER STATUE
ROCKY TOP
UT’s official alma mater is “On a Hallowed Hill,” but its unofficial theme song is the everpopular “Rocky Top.”
The Volunteer Statue—more commonly known as the Torchbearer—is made of Knox dolomite and originated from a student contest held by the classes of 1928 through 1932.
Written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant in 1967, the couple also wrote hits such as Buddy Holly’s “Wake up, Little Susie” and the Everly Brothers’ “Bye, Bye Love.”
It was adopted as the official symbol of the university in 1932, but the Great Depression and World War II delayed the statue being cast and displayed until 1968. It bears the words of inspiration: “One that beareth a torch standeth in shadow to give light to others.”
First played by the UT Pride of the Southland Band in 1972, “Rocky Top” quickly became a staple of UT sporting events and was named one of the state’s official songs in 1982.
THE ROCK
Walk through campus and you’ll see a giant, 98ton, Knox dolomite rock serving as a communication hub and palette of expression for the UT community. Unearthed in the 1960s, the Rock is a geological message board of every color. It changes often with hellos and goodbyes, birthday wishes, sports championships, marriage proposals, and political endorsements. Pretty much anything goes. It is so iconic, even the independent campus radio station, WUTK-FM, shares its namesake. It’s called 90.3 The Rock, and it plays—what else?— rock music.
Wish that I was on ol’ ROCKY TOP, Down in the Tennessee hills; Ain’t no smoggy smoke on ROCKY TOP, Ain’t no telephone bills. Once I had a girl on ROCKY TOP, Half bear, the other half cat; Wild as mink, but sweet as soda pop, I still dream about that.
[Chorus] ROCKY TOP, you’ll always be Home sweet home to me; Good ol’ ROCKY TOP- ROCKY TOP Tennessee.
Once two strangers climbed ol’ ROCKY TOP Looking for a moonshine still; Strangers ain’t come down from ROCKY TOP, Reckon they never will. Corn won’t grow at all on ROCKY TOP, Dirt’s too rocky by far; That’s why all the folks on ROCKY TOP Get their corn from a jar.
[Chorus]

3RD SEC CHAMPIONSHIP I 4TH NCAA CENTRAL REGIONAL I 24TH NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
y VOLS CLOSE SEASON IN 24TH STILLWATER, Okla. - Tennessee fancied a better finish, but the Vols had to settle for their third straight top-25 result. UT played directly to its seeding of 24th out of 30 teams at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. “While we played better over the second and third rounds, unfortunately our first round just put us too far behind,” UT head coach Jim Kelson said. Tennessee shot 303 to tie for the 16th-best round of the final day at breezy Karsten Creek Golf Club. In the second round, the Vols also tied for the 16th best score. But it was starting in 27th place that sealed the team’s fate. “Obviously, this was not the finish we had hoped for,” Kelson said. The Vols closed the tournament with solid rounds of 73 from Garrick Porteous, 74 from Darren Renwick and 75 by Robin Wingardh, but couldn’t get that fourth wheel to stage a comeback that, realistically, was aiming only for a top-20 result. Jay Vandeventer closed out the UT scoring with an 81, and Danny Keddie added 82. “We were proud of our team’s efforts this post-season and their advancement to the finals, but we expect better than 24th place,” Kelson said. “Our program must become significantly better and that is 100 percent my responsibility. “We will continue to make improvements to ensure our program stays on the path of becoming one of the elite teams in the country.” This was Tennessee’s third straight trip to the NCAA finals, 34

matching the best three-year run in school history. Kelson now has coached the Vols to 12 consecutive NCAA regionals, extending the school record, and six NCAA finals since 2003.
y OKLAHOMA! VOLS RALLY FOR FINALS BERTH ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - Tennessee pulled into the Wolf Creek Golf Club for the NCAA Central Regional final round and almost immediately started mowing down the competition. Charlotte? Check. Stanford? Only took a few holes. Why, the Vols even chased down Iowa before the day was through and punched their ticket into the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship in Stillwater, Okla. “We are thrilled,” UT head coach Jim Kelson said. “This may have been the best we have played this year under the extreme circumstances we had here today. Under the gun, this was a great round.” OK, so it wasn’t quite an easy afternoon at the local pitch-andputt. But Tennessee burst from the gate on a treacherous golf course and made up an eight-stroke deficit with plenty to spare, rallying to an impressive fourth-place tie. Tennessee carded a 3-under-par 281 in the final round to finish at 13-over 865, even with Iowa (865) and four strokes clear of Stanford (869). The Cardinal entered the day in fifth place, eight strokes ahead of Tennessee, but shot a final-round 293 for its worse score of the tournament. The Vols entered the final round mired in seventh place and needing to play their best golf of the weekend. They did that and

more, mimicking a Peyton Manning and Indianapolis Colts’ two-minute drill -- only at the start of the day. “I think they knew this was a hard-enough golf course that we could make up eight shots,” said Kelson, who received a goodluck call before the tournament began from Manning, a Wolf Run member and proud Vols alumnus. “Typically, it’s pretty tough to make up eight shots on teams as good as Stanford or Iowa. But on a course this hard with just a little bit of wind, if you go out and play pretty well, you can make that up. “We needed a hot start and we got after it.”
y VOLS, WINGARDH CLAIM THIRD AT SEC GOLF Tennessee and senior captain Robin Wingardh held on to capture a pair of third-place finishes at the SEC Men’s Golf Championships in Sea Island, Ga.
2010-11 SEASON REVIEW
Wingardh already had been named to the 2011 Division I Ping All-Region Team, and earlier was selected to the All-SEC second team for the third straight year. “Robin worked so hard for us and we are very proud to have had him as a member of our program,” Vols head coach Jim Kelson said. Wingardh, who served as team captain for 2010-11, helped the Vols to NCAA finals appearances in each of his last three seasons in Knoxville to match the best three-year run in UT program history. Tennessee placed 12th, 25th and 24th nationally in those championship events. The Morarp, Sweden, native led UT in scoring average (72.36) and rounds of par or better (16). His high score of the year was 78 at the NCAA regional, and four times he turned in 68s for low round. At this year’s SEC Championship, Wingardh twice shot 69 and tied for third place -- part of a seven-tournament stretch in which he recorded five top-10s.
Renwick previously was named to the Academic All-SEC squad for the second time in two eligible seasons. The logistics major compiled a 74.69 stroke average for 36 competitive rounds in 2010-11, with one top-10 finish. ROUNDS OF PAR OR BETTER Tennessee combined for 50 individual rounds of par or better during the 2010-11 season. Senior captain Robin Wingardh led the way with 16.
