Interview with Head Coach Jim Kelson About the new Mack & Jonnie Day Golf Practice Facility

“The facility turned out fabulous. It’s everything we wanted it to be. I can’t say enough about the job Mark Gossett, Jeff Wolfenbarger and Nick Farragut have done out there. Those guys have gone above and beyond in every way possible to make that facility as good as it could be, and they are the ones who deserve an enormous amount of credit for its shape and conditioning. “Obviously, we want to thank Mack and Jonnie Day of Palm City, Fla., for their tremendous generosity. We could not have begun construction without their amazing support. And there were many other boosters and donors who contributed significantly to this project. On behalf of all our student-athletes and the men’s and women’s coaching staffs here at the University of Tennessee, we wanted to say how much all their generosity has meant – not only to this facility but to our programs in general.”

About any pleasant surprises after the team’s initial time spent at the new facility

“I think the holes turned out to be a little bit more challenging than we thought. I think the greens on the three holes are probably a little bigger than we envisioned. We are using the three holes more extensively than we thought we would in terms of preparation, planning and practice – hitting shots into them – versus just playing the three holes. So those three practice holes were icing on the cake as far as the facility and have really turned out to be beneficial. “This facility is as big and expansive as any I’ve seen in collegiate golf. We really pride ourselves on teaching and developing players, and once we get our clubhouse constructed there will be two state-of-the-art video rooms where we will be able to enhance our instruction to an even higher level.”

About your coaching staff of Casey VanDamme and Randy Wylie

2010-2011

“We couldn’t have two more qualified people. Those guys are so bright and so knowledgeable in the game of golf. We are really fortunate to have Casey and Randy on our staff. I don’t see how you could get better than those two. Their skill level and instruction is phenomenal. “They’ve been a tremendous asset to our program with their attitudes, their personalities and the way they go about their work in a very professional manner. It’s something that is a strength of our program. Our players are very fortunate to be able to learn and develop their games under two guys like that.”

About senior captain Robin Wingardh

“I’ve been as proud of Robin as any player I’ve ever coached, and not only from a development standpoint. From where he came as a freshman to where he is now, he’s made strides in his game but most importantly in his maturity and responsibility levels. He’s our team captain this year and has taken that job very seriously. It’s just been tremendous to see the growth of the young man, and his golf game has flourished.

4 • Tennessee Volunteers Golf

HEAD COACH JIM KELSON has coached the Vols to 11 straight NCAA tournament bids, including five trips to the NCAA finals.

All credit to him as a result of a lot of hard work. He’s had to work very hard at developing traits and he’s one of those who really took advantage of everything that is offered here at the University of Tennessee. He’s a shining example of what can happen when somebody takes advantage of all the positive things we have to offer here.”

About juniors Garrick Porteous and Darren Renwick

“Both of those two men are coming along and rounding into really fine players. They have worked very hard this year toward developing their games and they are doing a really nice job for us. We look forward to them continuing to grow and develop and expect to see a lot of good golf from those two for the next year and a half.”

About sophomore Jay Vandeventer

“Jay is getting closer to fulfilling his potential. His short game is coming along and he’s worked at that. He’s always been a great ball-striker. Continuing to refine his approach and perspective is something that is going to pay him and our program huge dividends in the future.”

VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT RANDy WyLIE was named Tennessee’s PGA Section Teacher of the Year for 2010.

SOPHOMORE JAy VANDEVENTER finished 14th at the Windon Memorial for his best collegiate showing. of the gate at North Shore Country Club near Chicago. UT shot 13-over-par 297 to finish at 888, or 36 over par. Through the opening four holes, Tennessee already stood 10 over par -- and that was counting only the four best scores out of five players. The Vols never recovered and posted their worst regular season finish in six years. Michigan claimed both the individual and team trophies. The Wolverines (854) shot 2-under 282 Monday to finish as wire-to-wire champions and hold off a hard-charging Ohio State (855) squad that shot 9 under for the day and finished one stroke back. Michigan’s Lion Kim (207) also led from start to finish, closing with a 4-under 67 that left him two strokes clear of Ohio State’s Bo Hoag (209). California (856) and Tulsa (862) were next in the team competition, followed by a tie for fifth between Indiana (868) and Purdue (868). Vandeventer, who was 4 over par himself at that early fourhole juncture, settled down to shoot a closing 2-over 73 that left him at 3-over-par 216 for the tournament. Vandeventer turned in Tennessee’s best back-nine score on Monday, firing a 35 on eight pars to go with a single birdie at the par-5 15th hole. The Bristol sophomore’s best previous UT showing was a tie for 22nd at last year’s SEC Championships. Robin Wingardh entered Monday’s play just two strokes out of the individual lead, but consecutive double bogeys at the second and third holes doomed his chances. The senior captain played even par the rest of the way to shoot 75 and tie for 19th place at 4-over-par 217. Darren Renwick continued his recovery from an openinground 86 to close with a 72 on the heels of his 73 in Sunday afternoon’s second round. The England junior carded 15 pars, one birdie and just two bogeys. Renwick climbed seven positions to tie for 76th place at 18-over-par 231. Brandon Rodgers shot 77 to round out the Tennessee scor-

ing. The freshman from Farragut actually was leading the way for UT at even par through four holes before stumbling with a stretch of 4-over through the next four. Rodgers finished in 85th place at 24-over-par 237. Justin Walker closed with a 79 to finish in a tie for 78th at 20-over 233. The last time Tennessee finished this poorly in a regular season event was Nov. 5-7, 2004, at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, where UT placed 15th out of 18 entries. But that squad rallied in the spring to finish fifth at the 2005 SEC Championships, second at the NCAA East Regional and 11th at the NCAA Championships in Owings Mills, Md.

hIstory

Fourteenth was Tennessee’s number Monday at the Windon Memorial Classic in Glenview, Ill. Good or bad, it just depended on the point of view. It was good for Jay Vandeventer, who battled back from a tough opening four holes to tie for 14th place and lead Tennessee’s final-round effort. The finish was Vandeventer’s best as a collegiate golfer. The same couldn’t be said for the Vols as a team. UT slumped five spots to 14th place after struggling mightily out

Tennessee finished right where it started Sunday at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in Rocky Face, Ga., tying for eighth place to open the 2010-11 men’s golf season. The Vols shot 10-over-par 298 in their third round to close at 16-over 880 and deadlocked with Chattanooga, which shot 305 on the final afternoon. Alabama (856) rallied Sunday to win the tournament ahead of Wake Forest (860), which had the day’s best score at 1-under 287, Georgia Tech (862) and second-round leader Clemson (862). The Tigers slumped to a closing 8-over-par 296. Auburn was alone in fifth at 3-over 867. Brandon Rodgers paced the Vols in the final round with his second consecutive 1-under-par 71. The Farragut freshman, starting at the 10th hole, birdied twice over his first nine holes against a lone double bogey at the par-3 13th. Rodgers then added birdies at Nos. 2 and 6 to offset a dropped shot at the difficult par-3 eighth, a hole he played 4 over for the tournament. Rodgers finished his collegiate debut at 6-over-par 222 and tied for 30th, quite the jump from his 54th-place standing after Friday’s round. Darren Renwick shot 74, matching five birdies with five bogeys and then a double bogey to account for the 2-over-par result. The junior had three pars over his first nine holes and two on the second nine to climb eight spots into a tie for 43rd at 11-over 227. Robin Wingardh double bogeyed that pesky eighth hole to finish with a 75. The senior captain made the turn at 2 over before birdieing the par-3 fifth hole to give him a shot at even par. His tournament score of 1-over 217 was good for a 15thplace tie. Jay Vandeventer fell to a 78 Sunday and was part of the group with Rodgers in 30th place at 6-over 222. The Bristol sophomore opened with his lone birdie of the afternoon at the par-4 10th hole, but finished 3 over par on each nine. Garrick Porteous closed with an 80 to join Renwick in a tie for 43rd at 11-over 227. The England junior never could find his rhythm, birdieing only the par-4 18th hole against four bogeys on the front and five on the back. Medalist honors went to Wake Forest’s Lee Bedford, who closed with a 68 to finish at 10-under-par 206 and edge teammate Evan Beck (208) by two strokes.

Vols Compete in Four Fall Tournaments

Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate Jonesborough (Oct. 15-17) 299-290-284--873

Tennessee’s best round of the year led to its best finish of the year, a tie for fifth Sunday at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Jonesborough. The Vols placed three of their four scoring golfers in red figures, led by Darren Renwick’s 69. The junior from Worthing, England, finished at 5-under-par 211 to tie for fourth -- his second top-five showing in as many seasons at The Ridges Golf and Country Club. “It’s quickly turning into one of my favorite courses,” Renwick said. “Like I said Friday, I feel at home in the sloping conditions with the ball above my feet and the ball below my feet. It’s like that here on pretty much every iron shot and I like inventing the different shots the way I do back home.” In six career rounds at The Ridges, Renwick owns an overall scoring average of 70.67. Only one of those six rounds, the very first one, was over par. “Today, I made a couple of putts,” he said. “Starting the Tennessee Volunteers Golf • 5

back nine, I made three birdies by draining a couple of long putts and it kept me on the right track. Other than that, I played pretty much exactly the same every day. I had my holes to attack and try to make birdies there, but on the other holes I made pars and was happy with that.” Sunday, Renwick had two birdies on the front nine and the three to start the back at Nos. 10, 12 and 13. He finished the weekend with 13 birdies against eight bogeys. Virginia stormed from behind to claim the team trophy. The Cavaliers, coached by former Vols assistant Bowen Sargent, combined for their second straight 10-under-par 278 to finish at 853. First- and second-day leader Kent State was next at 857, followed by Chattanooga at 864 and Wake Forest at 867. Michigan tied Tennessee for fifth place at 873. Kent State’s Mackenzie Hughes captured medalist honors by seven strokes, shooting 65 Sunday to finish at 13-under 203. Robin Wingardh also completed another excellent tournament for the Vols, tying for 12th to capture his third top-20 result in as many events to begin his senior season. The team captain carded his first eagle of the fall Sunday at the par-5 eighth hole. Wingardh added three birdies against four bogeys to finish at 1-under-par 215. Garrick Porteous scored his best round of the season, a 69 that improved his finish by 18 spots over the start of Sunday’s play. Porteous overcame a bogey at the second hole to card a pair of birdies on each nine and tie for 30th place at 5-overpar 221. Max Smith completed the UT scoring with a 75. The freshman’s two birdies Sunday came on the front-side par 5s, and Smith finished his first collegiate competition all alone in 52nd place at 10-over-par 226. Marshall Talkington, playing as an individual, shot a thirdround 78 to finish in a tie for 72nd place at 22-over 238. Jay Vandeventer closed with an 81 to finish 74th at 25-over-par 241.

Wingardh shot 75 and finished at 2-under 214. He made 15 birdies against eight bogeys for the tournament, in addition to the two Tuesday blemishes at Nos. 4 and 5. The second-place showing was his best since tying for medalist honors at the 2008 Ping/Golfweek Preview. Tennessee completed its fall season by dropping one position in the team standings to a tie for 11th place, closing with a 17-over-par 305 for a three-day total of 44-over 908. Fifth-ranked Alabama (884) won by two strokes over No. 9 LSU (886), with third-ranked Florida (894), Stanford (894), second-ranked Oklahoma State (895) and TCU (895) close behind. This year’s field at Isleworth Golf and Country Club included five teams rated by Golfweek/Sagarin in the top 10 and seven in the top 20. Freshman Max Smith helped Tennessee’s cause with his best round of the tournament, a 74 that bumped his finish to a tie for 37th place at 13-over 229. Smith improved in every round (79-76-74) and shot 1-over 37 in each of his last three

nines. Garrick Porteous tied Smith’s tournament score of 229 after shooting his second round of 76. The junior began Tuesday’s play with double-bogeys on two of his first three holes, but rallied to play even par over his last 15. Darren Renwick was just 1 over par through 10 but lost seven strokes over his final eight holes to shoot 80. The junior, who finished fourth last weekend at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, had three rounds this fall in the 80s and finished Isleworth in a tie for 61st at 22-over 238. Freshman Brandon Rodgers carded his second 86 in three days and finished in 74th place at 31-over 247. Tennessee resumes play Valentine’s weekend, returning to Battle at the Beach in Newport Coast, Calif., on Feb. 13-15. It is the first of five spring tournaments leading into the SEC Men’s Golf Championship, set for April 15-17 at St. Simons Island, Ga.

Windermere, Fla. 288-282-291--861

Robin Wingardh couldn’t hold off a charging Bank Vongvanij of Florida and the Tennessee senior finished second at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla. Tuesday’s final round saw Wingardh carrying a four-stroke lead with just six holes to play. He was 2 under for the day and 7 under for the tournament before carding 7-5-5 -- triplebogey, double-bogey, bogey -- over the middle three holes of his second nine. Vongvanij took advantage by shooting the best round of the day, 68, for a winning total of 4-under-par ROBIN WINGARDH finished second at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational. The senior’s second-round 68 pushed him into the 212. lead and was his low score for the fall.

And Kelson guided UT to consecutive NCAA Championship berths over the last two seasons – a first for the Vols since they went to three straight (1995-97) during the Tiger Woods collegiate era of the mid-1990s. It was Tennessee’s fifth NCAA Championship berth under Kelson since 2003. The Vols also advanced to regional play for a school-record 11th consecutive season. But Kelson doesn’t appear to be settling for simply making an appearance. “Obviously, it was a big goal to get to the NCAA Championship,” Kelson said. “I’m proud of our efforts and the kids did a good job last year. Now, we’ve just got to keep getting better to jump up into that next level of teams that content and compete.” Kelson’s charges in the fall of 2010 captured the prestigious Carpet Capital Collegiate for the first time in school history and the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in a scorecard playoff. The Vols were a topfive finisher in seven of last season’s 12 tournaments and earned a No. 4 seed at the NCAA San Diego Regional, where they tied for third to advance to the NCAA Championship round in Ooltewah. Kelson was hired in June 1998 has been building this program from the day he arrived on campus. The Vols have won 15 tournament championships in his 12-plus seasons. Five different campaigns produced multiple tourney titles -- 2001-02 (three), 2004-05 (three), 2006-07 (two), 2007-08 (two) and 2009-10 (two). UT also claimed hardware under Kelson in the 1998-99, 2000-01 and 2005-06 seasons. One of the highlights was capturing the 2007 SEC Championship, Tennessee’s first league crown in 17 years. At the event, UT finished with three players in the top-10, including two tied for second. “The coaches were very proud of that team. We set this goal at the beginning of that year and worked hard at achieving it,” Kelson said. “They paid the price to be successful and they deserved to win that

championship. Their efforts, desire and their great team chemistry were a big part of our win.” Tennessee’s SEC victory that year by two strokes over Alabama led to a plethora of well-deserved postseason awards. Kelson was honored with his first SEC Coach of the Year award, Philip Pettitt earned All-SEC first team honors, while Charlie Ford and Chris Paisley were named to the All-SEC second team. Kelson’s first tournament championship as Vols head coach came in that first fall of 1998 at the Crown Classic in Lufkin, Texas. It was UT’s first title since 1996. Under Kelson’s instruction, six golfers posted collegiate bests and he also led sophomore Matt McWilliams and freshman Andrew Black to individual crowns. Those victories were the Vols’ first since 1996. Kelson’s guidance continues to produce individual awards for his student-athletes both on and off the course. Five members of the 2009-10 roster – James Brannen, David Holmes, Cameron Lawrence, Darren Renwick and Justin Walker – made Academic All-SEC. Holmes also was an All-SEC second-team honoree, joining Robin Wingardh on that squad, and Jay Vandeventer received Freshman All-SEC recognition. Two more Vols earned All-America certificates under Kelson in 2008-09, with Chris Paisley and David Holmes being named to the Ping honorable mention squad. Kelson coached David Skinns, Ross McGowan and Charlie Ford to previous All-America accolades. Paisley earned a European spot on the most recent Walker Cup team that played at Pennsylvania’s Merion Country Club, and joined teammate Wingardh on the victorious Palmer Cup squad that competed at Cherry Hills Country Club outside Denver. Kelson, 47, hails from Dallas and graduated in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama. He earned his master’s in exercise and sports science from the University of Florida in 1992. Kelson’s first head coach assignment was leading Augusta State’s

His teams had 32 top-five finishes in 57 regular-season tournaments. Under Kelson’s leadership, the Jaguars won at least one team championship every year he coached at Augusta State. The Jaguars captured 11 tournaments during his seven years as coach -- including a remarkable five during his final ASU season of 1997-98. Kelson was named NCAA Division I North Coach of the Year in 1993. Prior to Augusta State, Kelson served as the assistant coach at Florida under former U.S. Amateur champion Buddy Alexander. Kelson helped recruit several of the golfers who helped the Gators finish runner-up at the 1993 NCAA Championships. “Working under Buddy Alexander was an invaluable experience for me,” Kelson said. “Buddy is regarded nationally as one of the finest coaches in collegiate golf, and his ability to relate to his players in a positive manner is something I always try to emulate.” Along with Alexander, Kelson also has worked with some of the most highly regarded teaching professionals in the world, including Conrad Rehling, Eddie Merrins, Bob Toski, Wally Armstrong, Chuck Cooke, Denis Pugh, Ernie Vaderson and Michael Shannon. Kelson spent a year on the mini-tour in the Orlando area before assuming his position at Florida. He served as Alexander’s assistant for three years before accepting the head coaching position at ASU. Kelson also served as assistant athletics director for compliance while at Augusta State. Along with Kelson’s studies at Alabama, he made time to compete on the links for the Crimson Tide for 2½ years. He transferred to Alabama after his sophomore year from Oklahoma, where he was a member of the strong Sooner program that competed in the 1983 NCAA Championship. His achievements on the course include winning the 1983 Oklahoma State Amateur and a third-place finish at the 1987 Bermuda Amateur, in addition to participating in the 1982 U.S. Amateur. VanDamme took over as assistant coach for the Vols after learning the trade under renowned golf instructor Jim McLean. VanDamme spent seven years at the Jim McLean Golf School in both Palm Springs, Calif., and Traverse City, Mich., becoming the youngest Master Instructor in school history. “Casey joined our staff as a very accomplished professional golf instructor,” UT head coach Jim Kelson said. “Teaching and instruction have been focal points in our program for several years. These two components are really at the core of our program here at Tennessee.” VanDamme’s teaching experience included working with some of the finest players on the PGA Tour, and he was an on-site teaching professional to a participant in the 2009 PGA Championship. “I was extremely impressed with Casey’s knowledge of the game and his keen understanding and expertise as a teacher of golf,” Kelson said. “He is one of those special instructors that can identify a player’s tendencies and then prioritize and simplify the instructional changes. He possesses a very thorough and complex understanding of the mechanics of a golf swing, but his methods of teaching and development are condensed and simplified for his students. “This unique ability ideally qualifies Casey to be a member of our staff.” VanDamme brought a dozen years of golf instruction to the Vols. In his UT debut season, VanDamme coached three golfers to postseason SEC honors. David Holmes and Robin Wingardh were named to the All-SEC second team, while Jay Vandeventer was a Freshman All-SEC selection. VanDamme debuted as a collegiate golfer at Marquette before finishing at Northern Michigan, where he graduated in 2000. He began his tenure under Jim McLean in 1998 while still playing for the Wildcats. He also played professionally on the NGA Hooters Tour from 2003-04. VanDamme has spent the last three years as athletics director at Mid Casey VanDamme Peninsula High School in Rock, Mich., while spending summers since 2005 with the CVD Golf Academy in Gladstone, Mich. He also served in 2008 as head golf professional at LochenHeath Golf Club in Traverse City. “We were very pleased that Casey VanDamme decided to join us,” Kelson said. “Our players and our program certainly are benefiting from his expertise.” VanDamme and his wife, the former Jill Gobert, both are natives of Escanaba, Mich. They live in Knoxville with their daughters, Madelyn, 4, and Claire, 3.

ment each other.” Established in 1992, the UT mental training program’s mission is to provide Tennessee student-athletes and coaches with a comprehensive program for the development of competitive mental skills. Using the latest advances in sport psychology and centering on performance enhancement, the program offers a broad range of services aimed at helping student-athletes maximize their full mental and emotional management, competition planning, time management and visualization instruction. “Mental training anticipates the mental challenges of actual competition-- what we call the ‘mental moments,’” Wrisberg says. “It helps the athletes develop and rehearse proper responses to those moments.” Whitney and his wife, Laura, have one daughter, Samantha.

Tennessee volunteer assistant coach Randy Wylie was Tennessee’s Professional Golfers Association of America Section Teacher of the Year for 2010, as voted by the PGA membership throughout the state. Already the Knoxville area’s PGA Teacher of the Year for a second straight season and the third time since 2004, Wylie found himself in the running for national teacher honors. “The award is especially meaningful to me because it is given by a vote of my peers,” said Wylie, an instructor at Knoxville’s Fairways and Greens Golf Center. “I’m very honored to receive the award and certainly enjoy what I can do to promote the game I love.” Wylie has been named a Golf Digest “Best Teacher in Tennessee” for eight years running (2003-10). He began working with the Vols during two seasons (2000-01) spent as UT head coach Jim Kelson’s assistant. “It is very unusual that an instructor receives this award in consecutive years, and this speaks volumes to his level of expertise,” Kelson said. “Randy has played a huge role in our program’s development over the past 11 seasons. Roman serves the team in a wide range of areas, assisting with practice set-up, statistical analysis, equipment and clothing needs for both the coaches and student-athletes. “This is one of the best opportunities I’ve ever gotten,” Roman says. “Just to be here with Coach Kelson, learning about his leadership methods and watching him run an organization has been great. I want to help our team win a national championship, so I take care of all the little things.” The Reading, Pa., native graduated from the University of South Florida in 2006 with a degree in psychology. Mike Hamilton Director of Athletics

2010-2011

Appointed to the position of director of athletics in 2003, Mike Hamilton’s stewardship of the Tennessee brand continues to ascend to unprecedented new heights. While UT athletics shines brightly as a national standard of intercollegiate achievement, Hamilton has assured that the department’s impact reaches far beyond the fields of competition. In 2010-11, the benefits of Hamilton’s fiscal oversight took the form of $10.3 million in direct cash support to the general UT Knoxville campus—the largest such contribution by athletics in university history. The UT athletics department remains one only a handful of nationwide that receives no funds from state subsidies or taxes. Success on a national level has been a staple of Tennessee athletics, and under Hamilton’s watch, this trend has continued. The Vols have placed in the top 16 in the NACDA Director’s Cup six times in the last seven years, including two top-10 finishes. The competitive excellence exhibited by the Vols between the lines also has translated to the classroom, where in the spring of 2009, more than 51 percent of Tennessee’s student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or better. Operating as the CEO of an organization with a $100-million-plus annual budget, Volunteer success during Hamilton’s watch has not been limited to the athletic and academic arenas, as fundraising success has also been remarkable. Donations to UT athletics totaled $4 million when he arrived on Rocky Top in 1992. By the time he assumed the director of athletics position in 2003, that total had increased nearly 500 percent ($19.5 million). And by 2010, athletics development fundraising efforts had risen to $43.4 million, which is more than double the total when Hamilton assumed his current post. Additional financial highlights of Hamilton’s tenure thus far include athletics endowments of $32 million, a multimedia rights partnership with IMG College worth a minimum of $133 million through 2022, two adidas sponsorship deals totaling more than $40 million and $230 million in new or renovated facilities since 2003. Hamilton is married to the former Elizabeth Merrill, also from Brevard. They are parents of three sons—Matthew, Nate and Kiya— and two daughters—Madison and Kalu.

Dr. Jimmy G. Cheek became the seventh chancellor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on Feb. 1, 2009. Early in his tenure, Dr. Cheek worked closely with the university’s constituents to develop the strategic priorities for the campus, which he’s worked closely with others to advance. In response to a challenge from then Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, the chancellor set in motion the process to bring UT Knoxville into the ranks of the top 25 public research universities within 10 years. Dr. Cheek’s first year managing the Knoxville campus yielded positive momentum, despite unprecedented budget challenges. The 2009 freshman class was the most diverse in the institution’s history, and student access was enhanced through additional funding to institutional scholarships. The campus also has been recognized as a national leader in sustainable energy initiatives and cut more than $1 million in costs through energy saving policies and practices. Construction and renovations projects are currently underway to build a new Student Health Center, the Natalie Haslam School of Music Building and the Min Kao Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Building. Prior to his appointment as chancellor, Dr. Cheek served at the University of Florida for 34 years, holding numerous administrative roles. He was senior vice president of agricultural and natural resources, dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, assistant dean of the College of Agriculture and assistant chair of his department. Dr. Cheek earned his bachelor’s degree with high honors and his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. He received his master’s degree from Lamar University. A native of Texas, he is married to Ileen. They have two adult children and two grandchildren.

Brad Bertani Associate AD Compliance/Senior Golf Administrator Brad Bertani assumed the position of Associate Athletics Director for Compliance in February 2004. Bertani, 40, came to UT from Marshall, where he held the same position since January 2002. Prior to his Marshall employment, Bertani worked four years as an NCAA membership services representative. Bertani served as an athletics compliance and academic coordinator at Detroit from 1994-97, and before that as assistant to the compliance director at Ohio State. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Denison University in 1991 and played on the football team for four years. He then

completed a master’s in sports administration at Ohio University and his law degree at Capital University in 1994. Bertani oversees UT’s compliance program for all 20 men’s and women’s varsity sports. He also serves as sports administrator for the men’s golf program. In April 2006, Bertani was named one of the nine members serving on the NCAA Div. I Legislative Review and Interpretations Committee. He now serves as chair of that committee. Bertani is married to the former Gretchen Harris of Columbus, Ohio. They live in Knoxville with their three children: Lydia, 12, Joey, 8 and Lindsey, 6.

NCAA San Diego Regional Santee, Calif. (May 20-22) 294-296-296--886

2010-2011

Tennessee’s goal since September wasn’t a secret -- Make it to The Honors Course. Saturday in Santee, Calif., the Vols earned themselves back-to-back trips to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships for the first time under head coach Jim Kelson. UT climbed to third at the San Diego Regional, shooting an 8-over-par score of 296 for the second straight round and finishing in a three-way tie with California and UNLV at 886. “We are really proud of our team for the way they persevered this week,” said Kelson, who has led UT to the NCAA finals five times in the last eight seasons. “We’re excited about making it and feel we have a good team.” Top-seeded and top-ranked Oregon ran away with the region championship, closing with a 2-under-par round of 286 for a three-day total of 870. Augusta State was second at 880. Tennessee junior Robin Wingardh shot a 1-over 73 Saturday to finish all alone in 10th place at 3-over-par 219. Close behind him on the individual leaderboard was Vols sophomore Garrick Porteous, who led the UT final-round effort with a sparkling 71 for a three-day scorecard of 221 that tied him for 14th. Darren Renwick shot 75 and tied for 33rd place at 9-over-par 225. David Holmes finished in that same group at 225 after Saturday’s 77. Jay Vandeventer also shot 77 on Saturday. The

ROBIN WINGARDH led Tennessee in stroke average (72.89), rounds of par or better (18) and top-10 finishes (four). Bristol native’s NCAA tournament debut was a tie for 39th place at 10-over-par 226.

NCAA National Championship Ooltewah (June 1-6) 297-292-295--884

Tennessee kept up its Honors Course trend of playing consistently inconsistent, and thus the Vols depart this year’s NCAA Men’s Golf Championship with a tie for 25th place. UT shot 7-over-par 295 here Thursday for a combined total of 20-over 884. The team’s best (292) and worst (297) scores of the tournament were within shouting distance of one another, yet the Vols never reached the level of play they expected. “It’s just really disappointing,” head coach Jim Kelson said. “It seemed like we would have some good things going and then we would give it back. And it seemed like that happened two or three times each round. “But the bottom line is we were ranked 23rd, 24th or 25th coming into this tournament and we’re going to end up around the same thing. We’ve just THE VOLS advanced through the San Diego Regional to earn consecutive NCAA Finals got to get better and be a consistently better team and higher-ranked team if berths for the first time since a three-year run from 1995-97. we’re going to finish higher at the end.”

Senior David Holmes capped his Big Orange career with another outstanding performance at the NCAA finals, shooting a third-round score of 2-under 70 to post 1 under par for the championship and a tie for 24th place. “I just played solid all week,” he said. “I played great Wednesday; I had three bad holes and I played them 4 over. Then I got that birdie this morning that kind of kick-started my day and I played really well today. I was 3 under with three to play and I unfortunately bogeyed No. 7. That is such a hard hole. “But I’m happy and it was fun. I have some good memories and it was a great way to go out. I didn’t play as well as I wanted to this year but I didn’t ever play bad. I know my game’s there. I can say I’m better than I’ve ever been. Every year it’s gotten better; every day it’s gotten better. I’m pretty happy.” Robin Wingardh shot 73 for UT on Thursday to finish at 3-over-par 219 and tied for 59th. The junior was 3 under through 11 thanks to a trio of birdies over four holes around the turn before finishing with four bogeys coming home. Garrick Porteous capped his quality postseason run with a finish just outside the top-50 despite a closing 75. The sophomore shot 2-over-par 218 and tied for 51st. Jay Vandeventer posted his second consecutive 77 and finished at 16-over 232 in a tie for 141st place. Darren Renwick shot 79 and tied for 154th place at 22-over-par 238. “Obviously, it was a big goal to get here,” Kelson said. I’m proud of our efforts and the kids did a good job this year. Now, we’ve just got to keep getting better to jump up into that next level of teams that contend and compete.”

Twice is Nice It’s been more than 20 years, and Eric Rebmann remains the only Vol to earn Academic All-America honors twice, doing so in 1986 and 1987. Rebmann, who majored in finance, lettered for the Vols from 1984-87 and was Academic All-Southeastern Conference three times. He was no slouch with the golf clubs either. As a sophomore in 1985, he fired a 205 to win the Chris Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. He also earned second-team All-SEC honors that season. After his senior year, he finished runner-up at the U.S. Amateur.

Southeastern Conference The Southeastern Conference, with its storied 77-year history, has built perhaps the greatest tradition of intercollegiate competition of any league in the country since its inception in 1933. The 2009-10 academic year was another season to remember for the SEC as conference teams captured four national titles and four national runner-up finishes. Since 1990, the SEC has won 135 national team championships for an average of more than six per year. The SEC finished in the top two in nine of its 20 sponsored sports and in the top five in 14 of the 20 sports. With 145 teams advancing to NCAA postseason competition, the SEC continued to solidify its place as the nation’s premier conference. In addition to the four team championships, 41 SEC student-athletes garnered individual national championships, while 440 individuals were awarded with First-Team All-American Honors. Studentathletes around the league continued to excel in the classroom as well with more than 2,300 earning recognition on the SEC Academic Honor Roll. On the national all-sport level, 11 SEC schools placed in the top 60 of the NACDA Director’s Cup rankings. Florida led the league with a second place finish. Tennessee placed 16th while LSU was 19th; Georgia finished 20th, Alabama 23rd, Auburn 26th, Kentucky 29th, South Carolina 41st, Arkansas 46th, Ole Miss 56th and Vanderbilt 59th to round out the league’s top-60 finishes. -- Courtesy of the SEC Tennessee Volunteers Golf • 41
