OPPONENTS AT A QUICK GLANCE

This weekend, the Lady Vols return home to face a pair of Southeastern Conference opponents in Alabama and Ole Miss after winning four conference matches on the road. Friday’s match against the Crimson Tide will be the annual “Dig for the Cure” match, which helps raise money for breast cancer research By starting the season a perfect 6-0 against SEC schools, the Lady Vols have now won nine straight matches this season and nine consecutive conference matches dating back to last season.

Last year, Tennessee won all but two home SEC matches in the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena.

Tennessee has had a lot of success against both Alabama and Ole Miss recently, as the team has won six straight over both the Crimson Tide and the Rebels.

Alabama and Ole Miss have not won in Knoxville since 2007. The Tide is coming off a midweek win over Alabama A&M, while Ole Miss most recently fell to Mississippi State in a match that went five sets. The two teams faced off against one another on Sept. 28, with UA prevailing 3-1.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Last weekend, the Lady Vols capped off a fourmatch road swing with victories over LSU and Arkansas. The wins kept UT perfect in the SEC, as the team is the lone squad in the conference not to have a league loss.

The win at LSU marked Tennessee’s first victory over the Tigers since 2008 and the first time the team defeated LSU in Baton Rouge since Oct. of 2000. By sweeping Arkansas, the Lady Vols have now defeated the Razorbacks in eight straight matches.

Juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie Cikra and sophomore Kelsey Robinson led the offensive attack, recording double digit kills in both matches.

Freshman Mary Pollmiller was named the SEC Freshman of the Week, as she notched a doubledouble of 50 assists and 13 digs in a win over LSU and her average of 12.43 assists per set ranks first in the SEC in that category.

Defensively, sophomore Carly Sahagian had a career-high 23 digs against the Tigers, while Ellen Mullins dug up 15 at LSU and registered a team-high 14 versus Arkansas.

THE SEC (HISTORICALLY SPEAKING) Tennessee has won at least 15 SEC matches each of the last three seasons leading up to 2011, finishing with 15 in 2008 and 2010 and 16 in 2009.

Rob Patrick is 150-90 in his career in the SEC. In 12 of his 14 seasons, he led the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record against the conference. In 2004, Tennessee stormed through the league with a 15-1 record, tying for first in the SEC and winning the SEC Tournament a week later.

PATRICK’S MILESTONE WINS

ROB PATRICK /// HEAD COACH Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 15 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in seven of the last nine campaigns. Prior

to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988.

Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford.

From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively.

During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

In July, former Iona College head coach Alan Edwards joined the UT staff as the team’s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

“I am very excited about adding Alan to our coaching staff,” Patrick said. “He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, both as a head coach and assistant coach from a number of Division-I programs, and is someone who I feel will be able to assimilate himself into our team very quickly.”

Edwards was most recently the head coach at Iona for the past five seasons, where he led the Gaels to a 75-79 overall record and four appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships.

During his time in New Rochelle, Edwards mentored one of the top defensive players in NCAA history in Allison Neiters. One of the top volleyball performers in Iona College and MAAC history, she shattered the Iona and conference career record for digs with 2,682, the fifth highest all-time total in the NCAA. Neiters was named the 2007 and 2008 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and 2009 MAAC Libero of the Year, as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week 17 times during her career. She was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Honor Roll member, two-time CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict selection and earned Iona’s Academic Merit Award for holding a 3.50 or above grade point average.

After a standout career at Mississippi State as a player and coaching the past three seasons as an assistant at ETSU, Rachel Cooper joined the Tenneessee staff in May. Prior to her time as an assistant coach at ETSU, Cooper served as a graduate assistant with the Buccaneers, where she assisted in recruiting and coordinated team travel and community service.

“The thing that most impresses me about Rachel is her work ethic,” Patrick said. “I’ve gotten to know her in recent years when she has come to work our camps and I am very excited that we have been able to add her to our coaching staff. She has experience in recruiting and understands the day-to-day responsibilities involved with running a high-level volleyball program.

“Rachel was also an outstanding player in the SEC and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in our conference. Her personality is very engaging and inviting, and I expect that our players will be able to easily relate to her.”

A Roscoe, Ill., native, Cooper was a four-year letter winner and starting outside hitter for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. A two-year captain and team Most Valuable Player, Cooper was also the first Bulldog athlete ever named SEC Player of the Week. She finished her career third all-time in kills with 1,405.

WHO’S BACK? Tennessee is returning three starters and a libero from last year’s roster: juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie Cikra, sophomore Kelsey Robinson and sophomore libero Ellen Mullins.

Robinson was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection in her first season with the Lady Vols at outside hitter.

Additional returners include sophomore setter Kylann Scheidt, senior setter Kelsey Mahoney and sophomore outside hitter Carly Sahagian.

WHO’S NEW? For one, most of the coaching staff is new. Patrick added two new assistants in the offseason: Alan Edwards, who was head coach at Iona; and Rachel Cooper, who was as an assistant at East Tennessee State.

On the court, the Lady Vols feature plenty of new faces with the eighth-ranked recruiting class in the country. JETER OUT FOR SEASON Senior leader Kayla Jeter will miss the entire 2011 season with a knee injury, associate athletics director for sports medicine Jenny Moshak reported.

Jeter suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee at team practice Aug. 19. Recovery time is estimated between six and nine months.

Jeter enjoyed her best season as a junior in 2010, earning first-team All-SEC and AVCA All-America honorable mention honors. The Solon, Ohio, native ranked second on the squad with 340 kills (2.98/set) and led UT with 19 solo blocks.

SEC COACHES’ SURVEY SAYS The Southeastern Conference coaches selected Tennessee to finish second in the Eastern Division, and they picked up two votes to win the SEC regularseason title. MOVING UP THE RANKINGS By defeating LSU and Arkansas this past weekend, Tennessee climbed up four spots in the AVCA coaching poll to No. 19 after receiving 361 points. The squad returned to the top 25 on Sept. 26, as it was ranked 23rd following wins over South Carolina and No. 6 Florida on the road. Despite going 3-0 to start the season, the Big Orange dropped out of the poll after week one, as it was ranked 24th in the preseason.

The Lady Vols are off to a strong start this season and are currently in the midst of a nine-match winning streak.

Tennessee has not won nine in a row since 2008, and a win over Alabama on Friday would give UT its longest winning streak since 2004, when the team rattled off 14 straight victories.

Tennessee is currently one of just four teams nationally to have a streak of at least nine straight wins. Like UT, No. 6 Nebraska and No. 9 Hawaii are both currently at nine, while No. 1 Illinois remains undeafeated, winning its last 15 matches.

With a sweep over Georgia in the Southeastern Conference opener on Sept. 16, Tennessee Lady Vol head coach Rob Patrick recorded his 300th career win, all of which have come at UT. Patrick now has the highest winning percentage of any UT volleybal coach, along with the most victories.

A MONUMENTAL WIN By downing the No. 6 Gators on Sept. 25, Tennessee broke Florida’s streak of 24 straight SEC wins, which dated back to their last conference loss in 2009 — which was also against Tennessee.

It’s been seven years since the Lady Vols defeated Florida on its home court, as the 2004 squad topped Florida in the regular season finale, then returned a week later to win again in Gainesville to capture the SEC Tournament crown.

FLORIDA DOESN’T LOSE AT HOME Florida’s loss to Tennessee was just its 21st defeat at home since Head Coach Mary Wise took over the team in 1991, and just the 52nd loss at home in program history.

By being unofficially ranked No. 26 on Sunday, Tennessee is just the second unranked team to defeat Florida in Gainesville since 1991, and the first in 17 years.

Now with 3 victories in Gainesville, no other team has more wins over the Gators at home under Coach Wise than the Lady Vols.

CAN’T MISS TELEVISION Tennessee games have aired 7 times on an ESPN network over the years and the Lady Vols are 5-2 in those matches. Overall, the team has won 12 of their last 14 televised matches.

TAMING THE TIGERS AND GATORS By topping LSU last Friday and downing Florida Sept. 25, it is the first time in school history that Tennessee has beaten both the Gators and Tigers on the road in the same season. The Lady Vols had not won in Baton Rouge since 2000, while the last UT victory in Gainesville came in 2004.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS  ALABAMA Alabama posted a 1-1 record last week at home, defeating Mississippi (3-1) and losing to Mississippi State (0-3). Combined with its win at Georgia and the win over the Rebels, it marked back-to-back wins for the Alabama for the first time since the beginning of the 2009 SEC schedule. Alabama posted a .213 hitting percentage in its two matches and averaged 12.14 kills and 10.86 assists per set. Alabama had seven blocks against Mississippi State to post a season-high in a three-set match. With a team-high 37 assists last week, senior setter Stephanie Riley moved in to seventh place in the Alabama career annals with 1,636 assists. With 20 digs in two matches last week, Kelsey Anderson moved into eighth place in the Alabama record books with 951 career digs. Junior outside hitter Kayla Fitterer led the Tide in kills in both matches, and has now led Alabama in kills in 15 of 16 matches in 2011. Fitterer averages 4.30 kills and 4.81 points per set for the season to rank third in the SEC.

 OLE MISS Ole Miss enters the weekend coming off a pair of tough matches last week with a road loss at Alabama and a tight home contest with Mississippi State that the Rebels dropped 3-2. Senior middle blocker Regina Thomas continues to be a driving force for the Rebel offense, hitting .373 on the season for the second best percentage in the Southeastern Conference and leading the league in blocking with 1.22 blocks per set. Sophomore outside hitter Kara Morgan turned in a career performance against Mississippi State on Sunday, putting down 15 kills for a new career-high as she paced the Ole Miss offense in that match.

Senior libero Morgan Springer continues to set the tone for the back row defense for Ole Miss, coming up with 4.09 digs per set. It’s the fourth best average for a defensive player amongst the Southeastern Conference. The Rebels will travel to Lexington, Ky., to square off against the Wildcats, before Sunday’s match against the Lady Vols.

LAST SEASON VS. ALABAMA - 10/17/10 KNOXVILLE: The 24th-ranked University of Tennessee volleyball team finished off the first half of its conference schedule with a sweep, downing Alabama, 25-17, 25-21, 26-24, in front of 1,103 Orange and White faithful, the ninth-largest crowd in school history at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Leslie Cikra finished second on the team with nine putaways, while hitting at a solid .412 clip and blocking three Alabama attacks. Just behind her was fellow classmate DeeDee Harrison with a trio of blocks to go along with eight kills and a .400 attack average.

- 11/5/10 TUSCALOOSA: The No. 22 University of Tennessee volleyball team crossed the 20-win threshold for the third straight season and 18th time in school history, as it picked up a 25-17, 25-22, 2522, sweep over Alabam UT had six different players record at least four kills, as Robinson and Cikra each tallied nine.

LAST SEASON VS. OLE MISS - 10/1/10 KNOXVILLE: The No. 23 University of Tennessee volleyball team made quick work of a conference opponent, sweeping past Ole Miss in straight sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-22, at Thompson-Boling Arena.

The Big Orange was led by senior Nikki Fowler who registered her 45th career double-double with 10 kills on .375 hitting with a team-high 12 digs. Kayla Jeter hit at a .353 clip with a match-high 16 kills, nine digs and two blocks.

- 11/21/10 OXFORD: Propelled by the second double-double of Kayla Jeter’s career, the No. 21 University of Tennessee volleyball team fought off a gritty Ole Miss squad playing its final match of the regular season, downing the Rebels in four sets, 25-15, 1325, 25-20, 25-20.

Jeter paced the Big Orange attack, smashing out a team-high 13 kills on 39 swings. The Solon, Ohio, native also added 10 digs, a pair of blocks, an assist and a service ace to UT’s winning effort.

RECOGNIZING THE HELP For the second time in less than a month, Mary Pollmiller was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3 for her efforts at LSU and Arkansas. Against the Tigers and Razorbacks, Pollmiller had a hand in 80 percent of the kills, tallying 92 of Tennessee’s 102 assists and added five kills of her own.

She first earned SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept.

12 following her outstanding setting performance in Blacksburg, Va. She is one of just two freshmen currently in the SEC top 10 in assists per set, joining LSU’s Malorie Pardo. Pollmiller ranks first in the conference in assists, averaging 11.76 assists per set.

NIFTY 50 Freshman Mary Pollmiller’s first year in Orange and White is off to a fantastic start. Because of injuries at the setter position, she has played all but a handful of points. Her average of average of 11.76 assists per set is the best in the SEC and also ranks eighth nationally.

She has eight matches of at least 50 assists this season, the last one coming in the Lady Vols’ four-set win against LSU on the road. This season she has also produced four double-doubles, registering 50 or more assists in three of those performances.

OFF TO A FAST START After taking care of business at home, sweeping Georgia and Auburn in straight sets, and knocking off South Carolina, Florida, LSU and Arkansas on the road, the Tennessee Lady Vols are off to their best conference start since 2004.

Seven years ago, the 2004 squad registered 32 overall wins and only lost once during its SEC slate, as the team opened up confernce play with eight straight wins.

Sophomore Kelsey Robinson has been tremendous through 15 matches, producing nine performances of at least 20 kills so far this season.

In eight of those matches, she has also recorded a double-double. (The list of 20 kills & doubles doubles is in the box on the right.)

No Lady Vol had as many 20-kill matches in all of 2010. All-American Nikki Fowler reached the mark four times last year to lead the team.

Meanwhile, Robinson has already surpassed her double-double total from last season, when she had five matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs.

Perhaps not suprisingly, she is a national leader offensively. She leads the conference and ranks sixth in kills per set (4.73). She also ranks fourth in Division I in points per set (5.56).

LADY VOL DUO GETS REWARDED For the first time since Oct. 20, 2008, a pair of Lady Vols in junior DeeDee Harrison and sophomore Carly Sahagian were bestowed conference honors.

On Sept. 26. Carly Sahagian was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Harrison earned the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Sahagian was terrific against South Carolina and Florida, tallying 31 kills, 26 digs, three blocks and two services aces. She recorded double-doubles in both of those matches, and blasted a career-high 19 kills along with 13 digs at UF. Against USC, she registered 12 kills and 13 digs.

Against USC and UF, Harrison was a standout allaround performer. She blocked a total of 12 attacks, with an average of 1.33 blocks per set and set careerhighs in blocks assists and total blocks against the Gamecocks. Offensively, she notched double-digits in kills in both matches.

In 2008, former standout Nikki Fowler was the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, along with current Lady Vol Kelsey Mahoneybeing named the Freshman of the Week.

TOP 25 VOLLEYBALL CROWDS The Lady Vols had 10 of their top 25 highest crowds during the 2010 season, including a seasonhigh 1,431 against Florida on Sept. 19.

Nineteen of Tennessee’s top 26 highest crowds have come in the four years since Thompson-Boling Arena became the team’s primary venue.

After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its fourth year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River.

Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 41-7 in home matches, including a perfect 5-0 this season.  Record at Thompson-Boling Since 2008

With an average home attendance of 983 in 2010, the Lady Vols demolished the previous school record of 772 set the year before. UT also finished with a program record for total home attendance with 13,761 fans.

Through five matches this year, Tennessee is almost two-thirds of the way to match its 2008 total.

RECORD SETTER

NEW COURT To the casual observer, the Lady Vols’ court looks very much the same as always with the checkerboard orange and white beyond each baseline, but the playing surface is brand new.

The court was assembled for the first time in Thompson-Boling Arena last week and is slightly elevated off the ground, which makes for more spring on the court. The Lady Vols’ new practice court is also designed this way.

For their Saturday-night match against Maryland to wrap up the Lady Vol Classic, an announced crowd 1,938 fans were in attendance to see the five-set thriller, marking the second-highest attendance in program history.

The record crowd of 3,311 against Georgia in 2005 happened right before a basketball game.
