Big Orange Slices Kicking It Up A Notch The Vols and Lady Vols will see a spike in competition this weekend, as they compete in the Gold division races at the Brooks Paul Short Run. It is traditionally one of the best meets in the eastern United States. Seven ranked teams are among the men’s Gold field, including No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 12 Princeton, No. 15 Syracuse, No. 17 Providence, No. 18 Villanova, No. 19 Virginia and No. 22 Georgetown. In the women’s Gold race, there are also seven ranked squads among the entries. That group includes No. 1 Georgetown, No. 3 Providence, No. 5 Villanova, No. 9 Duke, No. 12 Syracuse, No. 15 North Carolina and No. 16 Virginia. Stepping To The Forefront Seniors Brittany Sheffey and Chris Bodary have stepped up to fill leadership roles for the Lady Vols and Vols, respectively, for the first time in their collegiate careers. Sheffey has paced Tennessee in both races this season, winning the Tennessee Invitational on Sept. 17 and finishing fourth at the Belmont-VU Opener on Sept. 2. She has scored in all 20 of her college races for the UT women. Bodary emerged for the men’s squad, posting runner-up finishes at both the Tennessee Invitational and Belmont-VU Opener. He has contributed to UT’s scoring tally in eight-straight races and on 14 of 19 occasions during his career. At this point, senior Chanelle Price and junior Ramzee Fondren appear to be UT’s No. 2 and No. 3 runners. Freshmen Jeremy Dickie and Austin Whitelaw have taken turns as the Vols’ No. 2 man in the first two outings this season, while sophomore Jake Rainey and senior Tom Gilmartin have each filled the No. 3 slot. Returning From Injury To Help The Team Brittany Sheffey and Kelsey Kane have returned from injury to aid the Lady Vol cause this season. Sheffey redshirted last season due to injury and has bounced back to lead UT in both of its races. Kane has battled injuries and recovery from surgery to move into UT’s scoring five this season in both races. She ran third on the team for the Lady Vols in the Belmont-VU Opener and fifth at the Tennessee Invitational. Familiar Faces In Familiar Places Lady Vol junior Kelsey Kane is the daughter of former Lady Vol runner and cross country coach Missy Kane and the step-daughter of former UT volunteer pole vault coach Jim Bemiller. Vol sophomore Daniel Tobin is the younger brother of Steve Tobin, who lettered in cross country at UT in 2005, 2007 and 2008, and was an All-SEC performer in 2007. Vol freshman Jeremy Dickie is the younger brother of former Vol Bob Dickie (1993-97) and Lady Vol great Sharon Dickie (1998, 2000-02). Sharon was an All-American and four-time All-SEC and AllSouth Region honoree. Bob, meanwhile, was All-SEC in 1994 and all-region in 1995 and 1997.
