CARSON-NEWMAN EXHIBITION The Lady Vols open the 2012-13 season with an exhibition contest against CarsonNewman College on Thursday night at Thompson-Boling Arena. This marks the ninth-consecutive year these two teams have met in an exhibition game. Tennessee reached the century mark in seven of the last eight meetings vs. the Lady Eagles. UT won by scores of 105-47, 101-55, 104-49, 135-55, 124-34, 110-66 and 105-40 in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011, respectively. The game will mark Holly Warlick’s debut as head coach at Tennessee after spending the past 27 years as an assistant and associate head coach for Pat Summitt. Following a diagnosis of early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type, in August 2011, Summitt stepped away from her post in April after 38 years at the helm and now serves as the program’s head coach emeritus.

UT will begin the campaign ranked No. 20 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll and No. 16 in the USA Today Sports/ESPN Top 25 Coaches Preseason Poll. It marks UT’s lowest preseason AP Poll position since not being ranked in the inaugural AP Poll in 1976-77, Holly Warlick’s freshman season at Tennessee. The last time the Lady Vols were ranked as low as 20th in an AP Poll was the 14th polling period of 1984-85, when UT stood 20th. The most recent low came when UT dropped to 19th in the 16th AP Poll of the 2008-09 campaign before finishing 18th. The Lady Vols concluded the 2011-12 campaign at No. 9 in the AP Poll and No. 7 in the USA Today/ESPN Poll. Carson-Newman is not ranked.

NEW FACES, NEW ROLES In addition to Holly Warlick filling the head coaching position and Pat Summitt working in the role of head coach emeritus, there are other changes to the staff. Former Lady Vol player (1996-2001) Kyra Elzy returned to UT as an assistant coach after spending the past four seasons coaching at Kentucky and serving as recruiting coordinator. Former Iowa standout and Harlem Globetrotter Jolette Law is UT’s second new assistant coach. Known as a key contributor to Rutgers’ success during her 12 seasons there, Law most recently served as head coach at Illinois from 2007-12. Elzy and Law fill the spots previously occupied by Warlick and Mickie DeMoss, who left after last season to take an assistant coaching job with the WNBA’s Indiana Fe-
