WELCOME TO 2012 FIRST SERVE

¢ This weekend marks the start of the 2012 season for the Lady Vols, who are coming off their first outright Southeastern Conference title in program history. The Orange & White posted a 28-4 overall mark, a 19-1 record in league play and reached the second round of the NCAA Championships last season. ¢ Tennessee has characteristically gotten off to a good start in season openers, with a 31-8 record alltime. The Lady Vols have not lost a season opener at home since 1978. ¢ Since 2001 - when the Big Orange really began playing matches in August - UT is 29-4 in the month, including an unbeaten 14-0 at home. ¢ Rob Patrick, now entering his 16th season as head coach, has made eight NCAA appearances with the Lady Vols, including the current stretch of four straight. ¢ Under Patrick, Tennessee is 34-6 in the annual Lady Vol Classic. Dating back to 2004, the squad’s only loss in their home event came in a five-set match against then-No. 17 Illinois. 2012 marks the 31st edition of the Lady Vols’ home tournament.

HISTORY IN HOME OPENERS

¢ The Lady Vols have amassed a 28-5 (.848) record in home openers, including a 3-2 triumph over Ohio last season. ¢ In the Rob Patrick era, Tennessee has been even better with a 14-1 (.933) record. IT’S GOOD TO BE HOME ¢ After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol Volleyball team is entering its fifth campaign playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River. ¢ The Big Orange has brought with it the tradition of home-court dominance that is displayed in Stokely, where it amassed an impressive 98-34 (.742) record following a multi-million dollar renovation that was completed prior to the 1998 season. ¢ Since beginning play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 50-9 (.847) in home matches, including a near-perfect 14-1 last season.

RECORD AT THOMPSON-BOLING ARENA

Year Record Pct. 2008 11-3 .786 2009 13-2 .867 2010 12-2 .857 2011 14-1 .933 All-Time 50-9 .847

WHO’S BACK? ¢ Tennessee is returning all six starters and its starting libero in 2012: seniors Leslie Cikra and DeeDee Harrison, junior Kelsey Robinson and sophomores Mary Pollmiller, Tiffany Baker and Shealyn Kolosky. Junior Ellen Mullins is the returning starting libero for the Orange & White. In addition, the Lady Vols also welcome back redshirt senior Kayla Jeter, who spent the 2011 campaign sidelined with a knee injury. ¢ Robinson set the tone for the Big Orange last season, earning AVCA Second Team All-American honors. The 6-foot-2 outside hitter became the first UT player to be named SEC Player of the Year after leading the league in kills (4.52/set), points (5.15/set) and double-doubles (23), while rating second in service aces (.35/set). She was also named a Volleyball Magazine All-American and earned AVCA All-South

Region honors. ¢ Harrison, Baker and Cikra all earned AVCA AllAmerican Honorable Mention honors last season after helping guide UT to its first outright SEC title. Harrison, a First Team All-SEC member and AVCA AllSouth Region honoree, led the conference in blocks (1.14/set). Baker was tabbed to the All-SEC Second Team and the SEC All-Freshman Team after averaging 2.48 kills/set. The 6-foot-4 outside hitter earned College Volleyball Update National Player of the Week honors on Nov. 1. Cikra was named First Team All-SEC and earned AVCA All-American Honorable Mention accolades after hitting a scorching .330 in league matches last season. Cikra was also named to the AVCA’s All-South Region squad. ¢ Pollmiller - the team’s 5-foot-10 setter - returns for her sophomore season after a record breaking freshman campaign. After leading the nation’s freshmen with 11.94 assists per set, she was named the 2011 SEC Freshman of the Year, the AVCA’s All-South Region Freshman of the Year, an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, to the AVCA All-South Region Team and to the All-SEC Second Team. Pollmiller rewrote the Tennessee record books, setting single-season marks in total assists (1,480) and assists per set (11.94) during the 25-point rally scoring era. She was just the second Lady Vol to be named the league’s rookie of the year (Nikki Fowler, 2007). ¢ After tearing her ACL in last season’s preseason practice, Jeter returns to the squad in 2012. The 5-foot-11 outside hitter earned 2011 Preseason All-SEC Team honors before being sidelined. In 2010, Jeter was named an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, to the AVCA All-South Region Team and First Team All-SEC. ¢ Also returning for UT is senior Jasmine Brown, sophomores Stephanie Stoll and Nikki Brice, and redshirt freshman Mercedes Vaughn.

SCOUTING THE TOURNAMENT FIELD TOURNAMENT CONNECTIONS

¢ There are all sorts of connections in the tournament field dating back to last season’s NCAA Tournament and beyond. Last season in the field of 64, Florida State made a run to its first national semifinal and eliminated Cincinnati and Iowa State in the process. After opening the event with a win over Albany, the Seminoles defeated the Bearcats in five sets in the second round and ousted the Cyclones in the regional final by the same margin. Florida State went on two lose in straight sets to eventual national champion UCLA in the Final Four. ¢ Molly Alvey - who’s entering her first season at the helm of the Cincinnati Bearcats - is a very familiar face for the Lady Vols. Alvery has played against UT every year since 2005 in multiple roles. She was the assistant and then associate head coach at Ole Miss from 2005-2009 and then spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Houston - who UT beat in five sets last season and shutout in 2010. ¢ Former high school teammates Tiffany Baker and Olivia Okoro - who were recently united at UT when Okoro transferred from UCLA - will be facing another former Hebron High School teammate at the event. Cincinnati’s Morgan Allred - a freshman outside hitter/ defensive specialist - played with the pair at Hebron and won a Texas State Championship in 2010.

#12 FLORIDA STATE

¢ The 12th-ranked Seminoles come into the 2012 season with just over half its 2011 National Semifinal roster returning. They return eight letterwinners from a season ago and welcome seven newcomers, highlighted by the No. 3 ranked recruiting class accoring to prepvolleyball.com. ¢ FSU posted a 28-7 overall record and won the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 18-2 league mark. The 'Noles finished the season ranked No. 7 nationally. ¢ FSU has three current student-athletes who have been part of both the Elite Eight in 2009 and last season's Final Four run. Mosher is a team captain for Florida State. ¢ Florida State head coach Chris Poole is entering his fifth season with the Seminoles and has claimed two ACC titles and made three NCAA appearances. She is tied for fifth in the UC record book with a .315 career hitting percentage and is a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection for the second consecutive year. She’s earned All-BIG EAST honors in 2010 and 2011. ¢ Joining Scott will be five seniors, including Becca Refenes, who led the squad in blocks with 150 last season. Scott and Refenes are the only two returning players that appeared in every set last season. ¢ Emily Hayden notched 273 kills and 86 blocks in 2011, while Megan Turner tallied 247 kills. ¢ Joining the deep senior class is junior defensive specialist Emily MacIntyre, who ranks 10th in the program’s record books in total digs (433) and digs per set (4.15). ¢ Enterin Alvey’s first season, Cincinnati was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST.

#10 IOWA STATE

¢ The 10th-ranked Iowa State Cyclones, who have made six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, return nine players, including three starters and its starting libero, from a team that reached the NCAA Regional Finals last season. It was the second time ISU had gone to the regional final in the last four year. ¢ ISU posted a 25-6 overall record and a 13-3 mark in Big 12 play to finish second in the league and No. 8 in the final national poll. ¢ The Cyclones were picked to finish second in the conference by perennial powerhouse and reigning Big 12 Champion Texas. Iowa State put three players on the Big 12 Preseason Team: Alison Landwehr, Kristen Hahn and Jamie Straube. ¢ ISU tied a program record for most wins over ranked opponents in a single season with five in 2011. ¢ Four Cyclones were named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America teams or honorable mention list: Alison Landwehr (first team), Carly Jenson (second team), Kristen Hahn (honorable mention) and Jamie Straube (honorable mention). It is the first honor for Landwehr, Jenson and Hahn and the second for Straube. Jenson (unanimous), Landwehr and Straube were all members of the All-Big 12 first team and Hahn was the conference’s top libero. Landwehr, Hahn and Straube all return for ISU. ¢ With a 12-3 road record, the 2011 Cyclones recorded the most road wins in a single season. ¢ Head Coach Christy Johnson-Lynch, who’s entering her eighth season at ISU, broke the record for most wins by a volleyball coach at Iowa State in 2011 and finished the season with a career record of 150-73.

The Bearcats defeated Samford in five sets to open last season’s NCAAs, but was topped by Florida State in the second round. ¢ The Bearcats will be looking to a strong senior class to fill the void of program-great Missy Harpenau.
