Big Orange Slices Last Meet Before The Big Ones The Vols and Lady Vols will compete in their final tune-up meet of the season Saturday at the Crimson Classic. Sixteen days later, UT will host the SEC Championships at Lambert Acres. Among the 26 teams slated to be on hand in Tuscaloosa, the Big Orange will get to see four other conference foes, including Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Ole Miss. Measuring Stick Meet Lady Vol Brittany Sheffey owns the fourth best 6K time among SEC women this season at 21:19. Logan Waites of Ole Miss ranks second at 21:08.03. Their 5K times stand among the SEC’s top 20, as do those of three other women who will join them in running at the Crimson Classic. Vol Chris Bodary will test his mettle against a field that includes seven of the SEC’s top runners at 8K this season. Chief among them are Martin Kirui of Ole Miss (24:18.54) and Carison Kemei of Alabama (24:35.90). Bodary’s 8K best in 2011 is 25:24.52 on UT’s hilly Lambert Acres course. New Kid On The Block Freshman Kacey Nobert of St. Agnes Academy in Memphis has joined the squad and made her debut by crossing the line as Tennessee’s third finisher (189th, 22:56) at the Brooks Paul Short Run on Sept. 30. She is pursuing a pre-dental course of study at UT and was not planning on running in college until J.J. Clark discovered she was on campus. Nobert won TSSAA state titles in cross country in 2007 and 2008, and 3200m crowns on the oval in 2008 and 2011. Stepping It Up Seniors Brittany Sheffey and Chris Bodary have stepped up this season to fill leadership roles for the Lady Vols and Vols, respectively, for the first time in their collegiate careers. Sheffey has paced Tennessee in all three races this season, winning the Tennessee Invitational on Sept. 17, finishing fourth at the Belmont-VU Opener on Sept. 2 and placing 41st at the Brooks Paul Short Run. She has scored in all 21 of her college races for the UT women. Bodary emerged for the men’s squad, posting runner-up finishes at both the Tennessee Invitational and Belmont-VU Opener, and taking 90th at the Brooks Paul Short Run. He has contributed to UT’s scoring tally in nine-straight races and on 15 of 20 occasions during his career. Chanelle Price (Tennessee Invitational) and Amber Zimmerman (Brooks Paul Short Run) have filled UT’s No. 2 slot in the past two races, respectively. They should vie for that role at the SEC meet. Freshmen Jeremy Dickie and Austin Whitelaw, and senior Tom Gilmartin have taken turns as the Vols’ No. 2 man in the first three outings this season, while sophomore Jake Rainey, Gilmartin and Whitelaw have each filled the No. 3 slot during those meets. Rebounding From Injury Brittany Sheffey and Kelsey Kane have returned from injury to aid the Lady Vol cause this season. Sheffey redshirted last season due to injury and has bounced back to lead UT in all three races. Kane has battled injuries and recovery from surgery to move into UT’s scoring five this season in every race. She ran third on the team for the Lady Vols in the Belmont-VU Opener, fifth at the Tennessee Invitational and fourth at the Brooks Paul Short Run.

Chris Bodary, then a sophomore, was UT’s fifth finisher, placing 17th in 25:51.70. The Lady Vols also competed in the 2009 Crimson Classic, but for them it was their second meet of the campaign. UT’s women placed third behind Alabama and Auburn that season. Two Lady Vol returnees were among Tennessee’s top five that afternoon, including Brittany Sheffey and Elizabeth Tiller. Brittany Sheffey ran second for the Big Orange and was fifth overall in 17:44.10.
