NOTEWORTHY NOTES OFFENSE ON FIRE VS. MISSISSIPPI STATE

Tennessee posted a season-high 31 shots in the win, its most since shooting 36 times against Western Kentucky on Sept. 15, 2013. The team’s 14 shots on goal were its most since posting 15 shots on goal at MSU on Sept. 23, 2012.

STOPPING THE NATION’S #1 OFFENSE

On Sept. 21, Tennessee shut out ETSU, 3-0, in Johnson City. The UT defense locked down on an ETSU offense that ranked No. 1 in the nation in scoring offense (4.38 goals per game entering the game) and had the country’s top two goal scorers in Hannah Short and Simona Koren (1.50 goals-per-game average). Tennessee also ended a six-game ETSU home winning streak.

BRINGING THE FIGHT TO #2 VIRGINIA

On Sept. 12, Tennessee had a 1-0 lead on then-No. 2 Virginia for 40 minutes thanks to Hannah Wilkinson’s score in the 10th minute. Those 40 minutes marked the first time this season that Virginia had trailed in a game and the first time since Nov. 8, 2013, that UVa had trailed in a game. It ended an impressive 10-game streak in which the Cavaliers never trailed.

WILKINSON’S MATCH-WINNERS

Hannah Wilkinson’s goal against Western Kentucky was the eigth match-winner of her career, moving her into a tie for eighth place on UT’s all-time list with Emily Redberg (2004-07). Wilkinson scored two goals in that win, marking her second multi-goal game of her UT career. She last had two goals in UT’s 2-0 win over James Madison on Sept. 1, 2013.

BOUNCING BACK

When Tennessee defeated Western Kentucky, 2-0, it snapped a two-game losing streak. UT has not lost three games in a row since losing four straight from Sept. 4-17, 2010. UT has never lost three in a row under head coach Brian Pensky and Pensky has not lost three in a row as a head coach since 2009 at Maryland (Oct. 29, 2009, to Nov.4, 2009).

Tennessee is 15-4 (.789) all-time in home openers and 2-0 under head coach Brian Pensky. Over the years, UT has outscored its opponents 58-17 in home openers. SIRNA’S INCREDIBLE STREAK

Senior Allie Sirna played 64 minutes vs. Milwaukee and ended a remarkable 2,876-minute stretch of playing without being subbed out. She was previously last subbed out in a 6-0 rout of Mississippi State on Sept. 23, 2012. From that point on, the Tennessee back line staple played in 47 hours and 56 minutes over the span of Tennessee’s next 31 games without coming out of the game. Sirna played the full 91 minutes against Wisconsin on Aug. 24.

BALDWIN WITH U.S. U-20 TEAM Tennessee freshman Carlyn Baldwin arrived in Knoxville in mid August after playing for the U.S. U-20 Women’s National team at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada. Baldwin saw playing time off the bench in two contests, entering in the 74th minute vs. Germany on Aug. 5 and then in the 62nd minute vs. China on Aug. 12. TENNESSEE PICKED 5TH IN SEC PRESEASON POLL The Tennessee soccer team was picked to finish fifth in the Southeastern Conference in a preseason voting by the league’s 14 head coaches. Tennessee received 125 points and SEC coaches picked the Volunteers to finish behind Florida (164), Texas A&M (162), South Carolina (136) and Kentucky (129). WILKINSON NAMED TO HERMANN WATCH LIST Tennessee senior Hannah Wilkinson has been named to the 2014 Women’s MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Wilkinson is one of 35 NCAA Division I women’s soccer players recognized as preseason favorites for the 2014 MAC Hermann Trophy. Wilkinson is one of eight SEC players on the list. The 2012 NSCAA All-American has amassed 13 goals and six assists over 32 appearances in her previous two years at UT. Wilkinson was previously on the 2013 Watch List. Tennessee (1-0) enjoyed goals from Wilkinson in the eighth and 32nd minutes, a Milwaukee own goal in the 42nd minute, Neal’s goal in the 48th minute and a score by DeGooyer in the 70th minute. Sophomore Anna McClung had assists on Wilkinson’s second goal and Neal’s score. Junior goalkeeper Jamie Simmons earned her first Tennessee win and her first shutout as a Volunteer, making three saves along the way. The shutout was the 132nd in UT history. Tennessee’s five scores were its most since a 6-0 win at Mississippi State on Sept. 23, 2013. UT had a 12-10 advantage on shots in the game. UT’s five goals tied for its second-most in a season opener and its most since score five goals in the 2008 opener vs. Chattanooga. UT’s most goals in an opener came in a 7-0 win over Chattanooga in the first game in program history on Aug. 30, 1996. Tennessee also had five goals against Chattanooga in the 1998 opener. The Orange and White has scored three or more goals in all three of its season openers under Pensky (4-0 win vs. Samford in 2012, 3-1 win over Oklahoma in 2013). Tennessee was aggressive early on with several attacks in the first five minutes and strong possession. In the eighth minute, Wilkinson collected the ball off a UWM center back and ripped a shot to the right post for her first goal of the season. In the 32nd minute, Susan Ferguson played a ball forward to Anna McClung who found Wilkinson for a header score to the near post, giving Tennessee a 2-0 advantage. Carlyn Baldwin took a corner kick from the left side in the 42nd minute and the ball deflected off of Milwaukee’s Rachael Van Keulen, resulting in a UWM own goal and pushing UT’s lead to 3-0. Tennessee aggressive play early on was reflected in its 8-1 shot advantage in the first half. UT kept the offensive momentum going in the second half when Amy Neal headed in a cross from McClung in the 48th minute, scoring near the right post. Gracie DeGooyer broke past the goalkeeper in the 70th minute for a score near the right post. Cali Hutson set her up with beautiful ball played into the box from the left side. DeGooyer is the first UT freshman to score a goal since Amalie Thestrup scored in the 86th minute against Ole Miss on Oct. 4, 2013.

RECAP MADISON, Wis. -- Sophomore Amy Neal scored an equalizer in the 63rd minute, but Tennessee fell to Wisconsin, 2-1, in overtime on Sunday after UW’s Kodee Williams knocked in the winner in the 92nd minute. Tennessee (1-1) had five shots to Wisconsin’s (2-0) 13. UT finished with four corner kicks to just one for UW. Jamie Simmons (1-1) made her second UT start in goal and made one save. Hannah Wilkinson had two shots in the loss. Wisconsin struck first in the 18th minute when Rose Lavelle fired a shot from the top of the box, low toward the right post for the first goal of the game. The goal was Lavelle’s first of the season. Tennessee came out of the gate with strong offensive pressure, attacking from both sides and holding possession through the first five minutes of the game. At the half, Wisconsin had five shots to UT’s two. Tennessee had six fouls to UW’s five at the break. UT had a good ball in in the 57th minute when Anna McClung sent a cross into the box from the far left side. Wilkinson sifted through traffic to get a header on it that went high. In the 63rd minute, Cheyenne Spade sent a high cross in from the left side and Neal scored on a header to the lower left post. The goal was Neal’s second score of the year. RECAP KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 23 BYU posted a 1-0 victory in Tennessee’s home opener at Regal Soccer Stadium on Friday night before 1,691 fans. The Cougars secured their first win of the season, standing at 1-0-2. Tennessee falls to 1-2-0. Elena Madeiros scored the game’s lone goal in the 17th minute off a pass from Niki Fernandes. She finished off a feed moving from the right side and scoring inside the left post. BYU outshot Tennessee, 13-6. Cougars keepers Katherine Snyder (two saves) and Hannah Clark shared the shutout. Jamie Simmons made two saves for Tennessee. After the BYU goal, Tennessee came back with strong attack in the 19th minute when Anna McClung fired a shot off the right post. McClung had another shot in the 39th minute that was saved by Snyder. UT had two more good looks late in the second half. With 20 minutes left, Brittney Wade sent a nice ball low through the middle of the box that Amy Neal couldn’t settle for a shot. In the 85th minute, Hannah Wilkinson ripped a shot wide left.

Tennessee (3-2-0) posted its third shutout of the season with the win. Tulsa (5-1-0) suffered its first loss of the season. UT keeper Jamie Simmons (3-2-0) made one save and posted her third shutout of the season. On a free kick in the 32nd minute, Allen, making her first career start, rocketed a shot that grazed the head of Tulsa’s Alexa Sidorakis in the wall and over goalkeeper Courtney McKeon for a score in the center of the goal. The goal was the first of Allen’s collegiate career. Tennessee had an 11-7 edge on shots and five corner kicks to Tulsa’s four. Tulsa fired the first shot of the game in the 10th minute when Madison Smith sent one wide. Hannah Wilkinson had a header in the middle of the box get blocked in the 14th minute and Tulsa keeper Courtney McKeon (2-1-0) made a save on a shot from Cheyenne Spade a few seconds later. Virginia (6-0-0) had a 23-10 advantage on shots in the game. Tennessee was called on 15 fouls compared to eight for the Cavaliers. In the 18th minute, Tennessee was called for a foul outside the left side of the box. On the free kick, UT was called for another foul in the box, giving UVa a penalty kick. Danielle Colaprico took the PK for the Cavaliers and sent a shot wide left. In the 20th minute, Tennessee goalkeeper Jamie Simmons made a great save diving to her right to turn away a shot by Kaili Torres. Simmons (3-3-0) made four saves in the loss. At the half, Virginia had 11 shots to Tennessee’s three and four corner kicks to UT’s three. Tennessee was called for eight fouls to UVa’s five fouls in the first half. Tennessee’s 1-0 lead marked the first time this season that Virginia had trailed in a game. UT was aggressive to start the second half as Anna McClung had a header go wide in the first minute out of the break. Virginia evened the game at 1-1 in the 50th minute when Kristen McNabb scored from the left side of the box. McNabb sent a ball to the right post, low on the ground past a diving Simmons. Brittany Ratcliffe had the assist. The Cavaliers pulled ahead in the 57th minute when Colaprico scored from the left side of the box, placing the ball near the right post. Alexis Shaffer was on the assist. UT had a good look at the goal in the 69th minute when Wilkinson broke loose down the left side, crossed the ball over to McClung to draw the keeper out and Carlyn Baldwin fired a shot from outside the box that went high. Simmons made some big saves in the second half, including an impressive stab to her right to poke away a liner from Colaprico in the 72nd minute. Ratcliff had a shot hit the crossbar seconds later. Tennessee’s best look at a late second-half goal came in the 76th minute when Wilkinson sent a cross in from the right side to Michele Christy, whose header was blocked inside the box. In the 77th minute, Wilkinson had a cross into the box to Cheyenne Spade, but the shot was wide right.

RECAP CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --Anna McClung scored in the seventh and the 57th minutes and Aaran Parry rocketed in a goal in the 78th minute as Tennessee took a gritty 3-1 win over Richmond on Sunday. Tennessee (4-3-0) recorded its third multi-goal game of the year (all wins) and its third win my multiple scores. Richmond fell to 3-4-0. The Spiders had a 12-8 advantage on shots, but UT had a 6-5 edge in the second half. McClung, Hannah Wilkinson and Carlyn Baldwin were named to the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic All-Tournament Team. In the seventh minute, McClung dribbled the ball about 10 yards to the top of the 18 and fired a shot that hit the lower right post and bounced in for the first goal of her UT career. McClung is a sophomore transfer from Florida State and the goal was her first since scoring for the Seminoles against Pittsburgh on Oct. 13, 2013. Richmond evened the game at 1-1 in the 35th minute when Ashley Riefner ripped a shot from 25 yards out to the upper left corner. In the 52nd minute, Susan Ferguson stole the ball at midfield and sprinted up the field. Ferguson found McClung at the top of the 18 and, with two defenders draped on her, McClung whipped a shot to the far right post for her second score of the season. Tennessee had a nice look in the 61st minute when Cheyenne Spade connected with Wilkinson on a breakaway. Wilkinson took the ball to the left side of the box, breaking past two defenders and drawing goalkeeper Emily Kelly out. Kelly made a sliding deflection right at Wilkinson’s foot. Simmons came up with a spectacular save in the 72nd minute. With Richmond applying pressure, Emily Drummond connected on a ball served in for a header from 10 yards out and Simmons made a diving save to her left to deflect it. In the 78th minute, Michele Christy sent a ball in to the left side of the box, drawing the keeper out. Parry connected with the ball as it descended, firing a shot to the right side of the net for the first score of her Tennessee career.

Shea Groom had a hat trick for Texas A&M. UT keeper Jamie Simmons (4-4-0) made nine saves in the loss.Texas A&M keeper Renee McDermott had two saves and improved to 7-1-1 on the season. Texas A&M struck first in the 20th minute when Groom connected on a header in the six-yard box on a free kick by Karlie Mueller from outside the left side of the 18. Tennessee’s best look at a first-half goal was in the 24th minute when Wilkinson made a run up the left side and sent a low cross into the box. Texas A&M goalkeeper Renee McDermott dove for the ball, but the ball just missed Anna McClung for a shot on an open net. UT had another good look at a goal in the 33rd minute when Michele Christy had a shot hit the crossbar. Texas A&M had a 13-2 shot advantage in the first half with Groom and Kelley Monogue taking three each before the break. The Aggies scored their second goal in the 59th minute when Groom knocked in a bouncing ball inside the sixyard box off a header assist by Janae Cousineau. Tennessee had some standout defensive plays late in the game. In the 69th minute, UT was called for a foul inside the six-yard box while defending a corner kick. Groom took the penalty kick for the Aggies and Simmons made the save, diving to her left. Gabby Santorio made a terrific save in the 70th minute, clearing a ball off the goal line. Groom achieved the hat trick in the 89th minute, breaking past Santorio and a diving Simmons for a score on the left side of the net.

RECAP JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Amy Neal scored in the 15th minute, Gabby Santorio scored in the 36th minute, Susan Ferguson scored in the 77th minute and the Tennessee defense contained the nation’s top-ranked offense on Sunday in a 3-0 win over ETSU at Summers-Taylor Stadium. With the win, Tennessee (5-4-0) snaps ETSU’s (8-2-0) six-game home winning streak. UT enjoyed an 18-11 shot advantage on the night. Tennessee goalkeeper Jamie Simmons (5-4-0) made four saves on the night and posted her fourth shutout of the season. ETSU’s offense was averaging 4.38 goals per game entering Sunday’s contest - the best scoring offense in the nation. In the 15th minute, Kiah Allen played a free kick from the right corner. Her ball into the box was deflected out to Carlyn Baldwin at the top of the 18 and Baldwin sent a soft pass into the six-yard box to find Neal. Neal put the ball into the right side of the net for her third goal of the season and the fifth of her career. UT had several good looks in the ETSU box in the first half. Susan Ferguson had a shot from outside the box hit the crossbar in the sixth minute. In the 18th minute, Hannah Wilkinson beat the defense on the left side and Neal had a shot go wide right on a 1v1 with the goalkeeper. On a corner kick in the 36th minute, Neal sent a shot off the right post and Santorio headed it in off the rebound to push Tennessee’s lead to 2-0. The goal was Santorio’s first of the season and her first goal since scoring in the 59th minute at Mississippi State on Sept. 23, 2012. With five seconds remaining in the first half, ETSU made a run into the left side of the Tennessee box and a deep cross sent in was cleared off the back line by Allie Sirna to defend UT’s 2-0 lead heading into the break. At halftime, UT had an 11-3 shot advantage and a 2-1 edge on corner kicks. On an ETSU corner kick the 62nd minute, ETSU’s Molly Collinson ripped a shot from the middle of the box that Simmons punched away with leap to her right. Simmons came up big again with a diving save in the 68th minute to turn away a rocketed shot to the left side by Hannah Short. Ferguson scored her first goal of the season in the 77th minute after Cheyenne Spade played a nice ball into the right side of the box and Ferguson kicked it into the right side off of Elliott’s fingertips. The goal was the second goal of Ferguson’s career and the first time she found the back of the net since she scored in the 38th minute of 2-0 win at Kennesaw State on Aug. 31, 2012.

RECAP KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee and Alabama went to double overtime on Friday in a hard-fought match at Regal Soccer Stadium and the Crimson Tide’s Maruschka Waldus knocked in a header in the 101st minute to hand UT a 1-0 loss in its SEC home opener. The loss marked Tennessee’s (5-5-0, 0-2-0 SEC) firstever home loss to Alabama (6-3-1, 1-1-0 SEC). Tennessee maintains a 10-5-1 edge in the all-time series. UT goalkeeper Jamie Simmons made four saves in a grind-it-out battle that ended with Waldus’ golden goal off a corner kick by Merel van Dongen 42 seconds into the second overtime period. Alabama had a 13-9 edge on shots and each team finished with four corner kicks. The teams played an even first half. Alabama had a 6-4 edge on shots in the first half and Tennessee had two corner kicks to just one for the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s Theresa Diederich took a free kick from the right side in the 19th minute but Josie Jennings and the five-player UT wall turned it away at the top of the 18. In the 26th minute, Amy Neal got in the end of a cross inside the six-yard box, but her header went high over the crossbar. Tennessee had another good look at a first-half goal in the 38th minute when Susan Ferguson ripped a shot from 25-yards out. Alabama goalkeeper Emily Rusk leaped up for the save. The team’s 14 shots on goal were its most since posting 15 shots on goal at Mississippi State on Sept. 23, 2012. UT enjoyed an 11v10 advantage for the majority of the game after Mississippi State defender Kayleigh Henry was issued a red card in the 11th minute for a slide tackle from behind just outside the MSU 18. Tennessee scored four goals in the first half. In the 13th minute, Amy Neal sent a pass in for McClung, who fired from the left side of the 18 and the ball bounced inside the crossbar to give UT a 1-0 advantage. Tennessee (6-6, 1-3-0 SEC) battled hard in the second half to try to rally back from the first-half deficit, but Georgia (8-2-1, 3-1-1 SEC) held its ground to hold off several UT attacks. The Bulldogs had an 18-10 shot advantage in the game. Georgia took a 1-0 lead off a corner kick from the left side in the 14th minute. Rachel Garcia’s header off the corner was blocked by the UT defense, but Carli Shultis took the rebound near the 18 and rocketed a shot to the right side of the goal to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs grew their lead in the 25th minute when Gabby Seiler broke into the right side of the box and scored on a shot to the left post. Spade and Tennessee responded quickly after UGA’s second goal. Shortly after subbing into the game in the 26th minute, Spade fired from about 15 yards out on the right side of the box to the right post to pull UT to within 2-1 in the 27th minute. The goal was Spade’s third on the season and the seventh of her career. Georgia had a 10-4 shot advantage and a 3-2 edge on corner kicks at the half. In the 49th minute, UT had a good look at a goal when Amy Neal broke loose on a breakaway down the right side and sent a low cross inside the 18 to Anna McClung. Tennessee put together some good offensive looks in the final 25 minutes of the first half. In the 21st minute, Kiah Allen sent took a free kick at midfield, sending a ball into the box to find Amy Neal for a header that went over the crossbar. In the 27th minute, Auburn’s Kala Falkner was issued a yellow card for taking down Carlyn Baldwin from behind on the left side of the 18. Anna McClung took the ensuing free kick and fired a shot over the crossbar. UT had another opportunity off a set piece in the 33rd minute. Baldwin was fouled from behind, setting up a Tennessee free kick from the left side of the Auburn third. Auburn keeper Alyse Scott saved a header by Gracie DeGooyer off Michele Christy’s free kick. At the half, Auburn had a 6-5 edge on shots and a 3-0 advantage on corner kicks. An Auburn foul in the 55th minute on the left side set up a free kick for Christy from 25 yards out. Christy sent a mid-level cross into the six that was just a little bit too far in front of Aaran Parry for a header on the right side. In the 72nd minute, Susan Ferguson made a spin move in the top right corner of the box for a shot that went two feet over the cross bar. Ferguson had a header from the right side go wide left in the 73rd minute. Auburn’s Alex Massey broke loose up the middle in the 80th minute for a one-on-one with Simmons, but UT’s junior goalkeeper made a terrific diving save to her right to prevent the goal. Auburn applied pressure late in regulation and the Tennessee back line survived a barrage of AU shots in the closing minutes. Auburn had three corner kicks in the final six minutes of the game and UT foul at the top of the 18 set up an Auburn free kick in the 88th minute. The Tennessee defense held to force overtime. Tennessee opened overtime in aggressive fashion. In the 92nd minute, Ferguson dribbled up the right side and made a move into the 18 before firing a shot that hooked right of the right post at the last second. UT had four shots in the second overtime period. Tennessee’s best look came in the 104th minute when McClung sent a cross into the box from the left side and Christy connected for a header that went wide right of the top right shelf.

Brown and Sirna also earned NSCAA Scholar All-Region accolades. Senior midfielder Tori Bailey was recognized for her outstanding work in the community, earning SEC Community Service Team honors. The year started with a bang as Tennessee crushed Oklahoma, 3-1, in the season opener on Aug. 23. The win marked UT’s seventh-straight season-opening victory and Brown managed to score in a season opener for the fourth-consecutive year. Tennessee’s first match against a ranked opponent was Aug. 30 at then-No. 17 UCF. UT battled back from a 1-0 halftime deficit thanks to a pair of well-placed free kicks by junior Cheyenne Spade. Spade’s set pieces produced scores for senior Katie Lenz and junior Hannah Wilkinson and gave Tennessee one of its biggest wins of the year. The team’s win over the Knights sparked a four-match winning streak with consecutive 2-0 shutouts over James Madison, Dayton and Mercer. Wilkinson and junior goalkeeper Julie Eckel earned SEC weekly honors on Sept. 3 after Wilkinson scored the matchwinners against UCF and James Madison and Eckel made tremendous saves at UCF and shut down JMU. Wilkinson was also named the TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Week on Sept. 3. Spade was named to the CS360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll for her assists against UCF. Following shutout wins over Dayton and Mercer, Sirna, the anchor of the back line, was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week on Sept. 9. Over the course of the season, Sirna piled up numerous one-on-one disruptions and clears deep in the box to earn recognition as one of the elite individual defenders in the nation. UT opened SEC play in style with a 1-0 triumph over then-No. 20 Texas A&M on Sept. 20. Brown scored on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute and the Tennessee defense held strong against the Aggies. For the third year in a row, the Volunteers upset a ranked Aggie team. Sirna led the defense once again and earned TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week honors on Sept. 24. In a televised game at Alabama on Sept. 29, freshman Amy Neal enjoyed a breakout performance, sparking Tennessee in the second half with goals in the 54th and 63rd minutes. Despite Neal’s outstanding effort, the Crimson Tide came away with the win. Tennessee enjoyed a resounding 3-0 win over then-No. 25 and SEC Tournament semifinalist Ole Miss on Oct. 4. Brown netted the 15th match-winner of her illustrious career, tying the program record set by Kylee Rossi (2005-08).

On Oct. 31, Tennessee played its final match at Vanderbilt. Seniors Brown and Lenz scored goals in their final collegiate match to lead UT to a 3-0 win over the Commodores. Brown wrapped her Tennessee career ranked fifth in school history with 27 career goals. She also tied for fifth with 72 points and her 18 assists are the eighthmost by any UT player. As previously mentioned, her 15 match-winners are tied for the Tennessee record. Brown’s legacy as an outstanding all-around studentathlete will live on in the Caroline Brown Scholarship endowment, thanks to her parents Donna and David Brown. Eckel finished 2013 ranked second in Tennessee history with 254 career saves and 23 career shutouts. She also stands third in minutes in goal with 5683:20 and third in victories with 37. Her career goals-against average is 0.90. Eckel will enter 2014 with a chance to capture every Tennessee goalkeeping record. Sirna was the only Volunteer to play all 1,792 minutes of the season. She with long-overdue national recognition and SEC accolades to her name now, Sirna will be poised to have another sensational season leading the Tennessee defense in 2014. Playing in 16 matches, Wilkinson enjoyed another strong season. The junior forward had five goals and five assists despite seeing increased defensive focus on her after a 2012 All-American and All-SEC campaign. She scored the winners against UCF and JMU.
