STRONG START FOR LADY VOLS  No. 4/4 Tennessee jumped out to an impressive start to the 2013 season last week in the Red Desert Classic, UT notched wins over Southern Utah, Idaho State, Utah State, South Dakota and BYU.  The Lady Vols 18 runs scored against Southern Utah marked the most ever in a season opener in team history and the most for the program since an 18-0 win over ETSU on Feb. 15, 2011.  UT’s win over Southern Utah also marked the 800th in program history.  Tennessee is hitting .424 entering this weekend’s tournament and averaging a whopping 10.6 runs per game.  Here are UT’s hitting leaders through the first weekend of play: Hannah Akamine: .778 BA (7-for-9), one HR, five RBIs, six runs Rainey Gaffin: .667 BA (4-for-6), one triple, three RBIs, three runs Cheyanne Tarango: .636 BA (7-for-11), two homers, one double, six RBIs, seven runs Raven Chavanne: .571 BA (8-for-14), one homer, two doubles, seven RBIs, seven runs  Here are UT’s pitching leaders through the first weekend of play: Ellen Renfroe: 2-0, 1.17 ERA, 12 IP, 14 Ks, .159 opp. BA Ivy Renfroe: 1-0, 1.50 ERA, 4.2 IP, six Ks, .000 opp. BA

SERIES NOTES UT-NC State (UT leads 1-0)  Tennessee and North Carolina State have played just once before in the history of both programs. On March 9, 2006, UT took a 9-0 win over the Wolfpack. That win came in the 2006 USF adidas Tournament in Tampa, Fla. Tonya Callahan and Liane Horiuchi hit home runs and Monica Abbott pitched a 12-strikeout, two-hitter in a 9-0 UT win.

UT-Coastal Carolina (UT leads 5-0)  The Lady Vols hold a 5-0 edge in their all-time series against Coastal Carolina. The teams last played on Feb. 9, 2007 as Monica Abbott tossed a 13-strikeout one-hitter in UT’s 8-0, five-inning win in Chapel Hill, N.C.  Tennessee has a 2-0 edge on the Chanticleers in neutral site games.  UT has outscored Coastal Carolina 52-4 in the history of the series. Back in the team’s first meeting in 1996, Tennessee took a 23-0 win in Knoxville.

UT-USF (USF leads 8-7-1)  USF leads the tightly-contested all-time series, 8-71. The teams last played on Feb. 17, 2008, with the Bulls taking a 4-1 win in Tampa.  Under the direction of co-head coaches Ralph Weekly and Karen Weekly, Tennessee is 2-1-1 against USF. The Lady Vols’ last win against the Bulls was an 8-0, five-inning decision on March 11, 2006, in Clearwater, Fla. Monica Abbott tossed the 14th no-hitter of her career and fanned 13 batters and Tonya Callahan and Katherine Card each drove in a pair of runs in the UT victory.  When the series is played in Tampa, USF has a 6-2-1 all-time edge in the series. UT’s last win vs. the Bulls in Tampa was a 4-3 decision on Feb. 1, 2002.
