Big Orange Slices... The All-Time Series Against the Bulldogs A stretch of 14 wins out of its last 18 match-ups against Georgia (dating back to April 7, 2007) has pushed Tennessee in front in its all-time series against the Bulldogs (UT leads 28-27) for the first time since back during the 2000 campaign. The Lady Vols enter Wednesday night’s doubleheader versus UGA having taken the last five meetings between the two squads, including a pair of SEC Tournament match-ups (May 13, 2010, in Fayetteville, Ark., UT won 6-4; May 14, 2011, Oxford, Miss., UT won 6-5 in 8 inn.) and a WCWS contest (June 4, 2010, in Oklahoma City, Okla., UT won 7-5). Last season the Big Orange ventured to Athens, Ga., on April 6 and promptly ended Georgia’s 37-game home winning streak with a DH sweep, 5-1 and 9-4. The two squads later faced off on May 14 with the SEC Tournament Championship on the line in Oxford, Miss. The ‘Dawgs raced to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first but watched the Lady Vols battle back to tie the count and force extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth, Shelby Burchell launched a solo HR to center off then-UGA pitcher Alison Owen, granting Tennessee the program’s second league tournament title. A Rugged Early Slate Tennessee hasn’t been bashful about facing off against top competition thus far in 2012. The Big Orange has already faced off against 12 TEAMS THAT WERE PART OF THE 2011 NCAA TOURNAMENT FIELD OF 64, posting a 11-6 record in those match-ups. Included are victories over #1 and defending national champion Arizona State, San Diego State, Texas Tech, Western Michigan, #20/17 Georgia Tech, Illinois State, Memphis, #3/4 Florida, #1 Alabama and Kentucky (two wins) with losses against #4/3 Cal, at #13 Texas, vs. #3/4 Florida (two defeats), #1 Alabama and Kentucky. It’s a Walk-Off! No...not that kind of walk-off like from the movie “Zoolander,” but rather softball victories in the final atbat. Tennessee owns FOUR WALK-OFF WINS during the 2012 campaign, two of the run-rule variety and another two via regulation, with all of them occurring at Lee Softball Stadium. The first came during an 8-0 (5 inn.) triumph over ETSU on March 3 as junior Whitney Hammond singled in the winning tally in the fifth. On March 9 in the series opener against #3/4 Florida, a Gator error on a dropped throw at first with two outs in the
