A Stunning Performance!

Sophomore Kat Dotson did something on March 15 during a 16-2 (6 inn.) win over Tennessee State in Nashville, Tenn., that no Lady Vol and few in NCAA softball history had ever accomplished, by registering a staggering NINE RBIS IN A SINGLE GAME. The Savannah, Ga., native broke a 15-year old Big Orange record set on April 2, 1996, during a win over Wingate by former Lady Vol Carrie Swinford. That occurred the season before the Southeastern Conference even began sponsoring softball. DOTSON’S EFFORT TIED FOR THE SIXTH-BEST SINGLE-GAME RBI PERFORMANCE IN ALL OF NCAA DIVISION I SOFTBALL HISTORY. Dotson also recently had a stretch of FOUR CONSECUTIVE GAMES WITH A HR (March 5-11 -- Furman, Georgia Southern-twice and #23 Kentucky). tying her for SECOND IN NCAA DIVISION I SOFTBALL HISTORY FOR THE LONGEST SUCH STREAK. There’s not a great deal of history between Tennessee and Iowa as the teams have met just twice, splitting the previous contests, 1-1. During Co-Head Coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly’s initial season at UT, the #16 Hawkeyes routed the unrated Lady Vols, 13-1 (5 inn.), on Feb. 24, 2002, at the Georgia State Round Robin in Atlanta, Ga. Tennessee re-paid that favor exactly four years later on Feb. 24, 2006, as a Monica Abbott-led and No. 2-ranked Big Orange crew blasted #25 Iowa, 11-2 (5 inn.) at the NFCA Lead-off Classic in Columbus, Ga. Former Lady Vol All-Americans Tonya Callahan (3-for-3, HR, two RBIs) and Lindsay Schutzler (2-for-4, two RBIs) led the UT offense in that contest.

As of March 16th, a pair of Lady Vols possess current hit streaks of six games or more.

Sophomore Kat Dotson is currently on a NINE-GAME HITTING STREAK during which she’s hit .567 overall (17-of-30) with an amazing six HR’s and 28 RBIs and a slugging percentage at an astronomical 1.367. Senior Kelly Grieve is on a six-game skein during which she’s posted a .550 mark (11-of-20) with a HR and eight RBIs. Accepting a Major Invite!!!

Tennessee sophomore Raven Chavanne has officially accepted an invitation to the 2011 USA Softball Women’s National Team tryout camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., over June 12-17. The approximately 17 athletes selected to represent USA Softball will compete in over seven different events in four different countries, including the World Cup of Softball VI and the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico (Oct. 17-23).

Chavanne played in the summer of 2010 for the U.S. Women’s Futures National Team that finished second at the World Cup of Softball 5. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native hit .389 overall with three runs scored, two steals and an RBI for Team USA. Chavanne was at her best in the event with a 3-for-3 effort while registering the eventual game-winning run during a 2-1 upset of defending Olympic gold medalist Japan.

A Disappointing League Start for UT The Big Orange dropped to 9-6 all-time in Southeastern Conference openers after dropping a 9-6 decision at #23 Kentucky on March 11. UT held a 5-4 lead into the sixth inning of the lidlifter before watching the Wildcats rally for the victory. After recovering on Saturday to rout the ‘Cats 10-0, the Big Orange lost a 5-4, 10-inning heartbreaker to UK to drop the initial league series of the season two games to one. Tennessee was within one strike of a 4-1 triumph in the finale before allowing a game-tying, three-run HR to Kentucky catcher Megan Yocke.

Road Warriors!

The Lady Vols should change their team name to “The Road Warriors” considering what they’ve already been through this season. Since leaving on Feb. 11th to open the season in the Stetson Leadoff Classic in DeLand, Fla., through the end of a recent road trip to battle Kentucky and Tennessee State, THE BIG ORANGE WERE ON THE ROAD FOR 20 OF THE FIRST 33 DAYS OF THE 2011 SEASON. During that time UT played 25 games over those 33 days, 26 contests if you count its exhibition victory over the Dutch National Team.

We Went Streaking!!!!

Tennessee posted a SEASON-BEST 11-GAME WINNING STREAK from Feb. 22 (Southern Utah) through March 6 (Georgia Southern) before seeing its skein end in a 9-6 loss at #23 Kentucky. The streak marked the longest for the Big Orange since posting a 17-game winning streak from February 7-March 6, 2009. The 2007 Lady Vol squad continues to hold the school mark of 26 straight victories over a stretch from March 17-April 28, 2007.

Almost Cycling It Up...

With Tennessee baseball’s Matt Duffy becoming just the second Vol ever to hit for the cycle during a win over New Orleans on March 9, it made me remember how very close the Lady Vol softball team has come during the 2011 season to registering the second known cycle in program history.

2011 TENNESSEE LADY VOL SOFTBALL A brief history lesson shows us that former UT All-American Tonya Callahan managed the only known cycle (single, double, triple and HR in the same game) in the annals of Big Orange softball during a 6-1 win over Hofstra on Feb. 16, 2008, at the USF Best Western Tournament in Tampa, Fla. Tennessee has already had a player flirt with the rarified cycle on THREE OCCASIONS through just the first 25 games of 2011. Senior center fielder Kelly Grieve went 3-for-3 with a single, a triple and a HR before walking in her final at-bat to end up just a double short of the cycle against Cal Poly on Feb. 18 in Las Vegas, Nev. Sophomore right fielder Kat Dotson has amazingly almost turned the cycle trick twice this year. The Savannah, Ga., native doubled, singled, fouled out to third and tripled as part of a 3-for-4, four-RBI effort against San Diego State in Cathedral City, Calif., on Feb. 24. She singled, homered, singled and tripled on March 5 as part of a 4-for-4, three RBI performance during a victory over Furman at the Tennessee Classic.

Tennessee Boasts Five of the Top 15 Hitters in the SEC! The most recent Southeastern Conference stats were just awash with Lady Vols. As of March 15 (prior to the Tennessee State game), Tennessee boasted five of the top 15 hitters by average in the league as Kat Dotson sat second (.493), Raven Chavanne was fifth (.473), Kelly Grieve was eighth (.456), Lauren Gibson was 12th (..400) and Shelby Burchell was 15th (.391). The quintet is a major part of the reason that the Big Orange also boasted the league’s top team batting average of .379, well ahead of Alabama who was second at .356.

Dominance Thy Name is “Dottie” Kat Dotson, a.k.a. “Dottie,” is making her All-American freshman campaign of 2010 look tame in comparison to what she’s doing early on thus far in 2011.

The Savannah, Ga., native currently leads the Lady Vol squad in batting average (.507 on 38-for-75), RBIs (49), slugging (1.000) and on-base percentage (.591) and also owns nine HR’s over her first 25 games to TRIPLE THE HR OUTPUT FROM HER ENTIRE ROOKIE SEASON. Her 49 RBIs are also 12 more than the 37 RBIs she registered during her initial season. On a Southeastern Conference level, she is currently rated first in RBIs, second in average and on-base % and third in slugging percentage (as of March 15).

As a result of her efforts over five contests from March 3-6 (vs. Evansville and at the Tennessee Classic), during which she hit .667 (10-of-15) with a double, triple, three HR’s and 13 RBIs, DOTSON PICKED UP A MARCH 7TH NOD AS THE SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK. The award marked the second for a Lady Vol over the first four weeks of the 2011 season (Chavanne on Feb. 14) as well as the second SEC Player of the Week honor for Dotson during her collegiate career (previous was on March 29, 2010).

Great Against Teams In-State!

Tennessee kicked off its 2011 schedule against in-state schools on Tuesday, Feb. 15, versus ETSU in Knoxville, posting an 18-0 (5 inn.) victory. Tennessee State went down in six innings on March 15, via a 16-2 count.

The Lady Vols have made a habit of dominating its series’ with in-state schools since starting the UT program in 1996. All-time, the Orange & White is now an incredible 97-3 overall against a combination of 10 Tennessee schools. Co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly have gone 63-0 against in-state programs since arriving at Rocky Top. UT HAS ALSO WON 69 STRAIGHT GAMES AGAINST IN-STATE OPPONENTS SINCE SUFFERING ITS LAST DEFEAT BACK ON MARCH 22, 2000, AGAINST MTSU. In fact, two of Tennessee’s three all-time in-state losses came against Chattanooga when coached by...Karen Weekly in 1999.

The Lady Vols are 17-0 against Austin Peay, 16-0 against Tennessee Tech and 14-0 versus Belmont, 16-1 versus Middle Tennessee, 14-0 in games with ETSU. UT is also 9-0 versus Tennessee State, 6-0 against Lipscomb, 3-2 against Chattanooga and 1-0 versus Memphis and UT-Martin.

The Bomb Squad!!!!

The “LADY VOL BOMB SQUAD” is off to a powerful start thus far through its opening 25 games. Tennessee has combined to bash 32 home runs (the most of any Weekly coached UT team after 25 games), including a team-best nine by sophomore Kat Dotson (hit just three during her All-American rookie season in 2010) and eight by junior Shelby Burchell (previous single-season high was five in 2009). The school record of 52 was established back in 1996 (the year before the SEC began sponsoring softball) and has since been equaled by the 2002 and 2005 UT squads. Tennessee is over halfway to that mark in 2011 with approximately 31 regular-season games plus any postseason action still to come. The statistical comparisons through the opening 25 games between last year’s Tennessee WCWS team and this one are stunning. (Ellen) Renfroe’s On a Roll!

That would be freshman Ellen Renfroe as the 6-0 right hander is 7-1 with a 1.84 ERA and 63 strikeouts over her last 38 innings in the circle as UT posted victories over #25 BYU, Loyola Marymount, #2 UCLA, Evansville, Louisiana Monroe, Furman and Georgia Southern.

After striking out a career-high nine LMU hitters in just four innings of relief in a 7-2 triumph on Feb. 25, the Jackson, Tenn., one-upped herself the very next day by firing a complete-game with a then career-best 10 strikeouts as Tennessee upset the defending national champion Bruins, 7-1.

For her efforts in Cathedral City, Calif., Renfroe was profiled in a Graham Hays article that had top-billing on the front page of the ESPN.com “College Sports” section on March 1.

Most recently Renfroe was on the end of an extremely disappointing defeat as she took the loss in UT’s 5-4, 10-inning marathon against #23 Kentucky, despite tallying a NEW CAREER-BEST OF 13 STRIKEOUTS OVER A CAREER-HIGH 7.1 INNINGS IN THE CIRCLE. Burchell’s Blowing Up! After showing potential during her first two years at Rocky Top, junior first baseman Shelby Burchell has truly emerged as an offensive weapon for the Big Orange early on in this 2011 campaign. The Columbia, Tenn., native entered the season as a career .259 hitter with nine HR’s and 48 RBIs. SHE IS CURRENTLY HITTING AT A .394 CLIP (28-OF-71) WITH EIGHT HRS AND 28 RBIS THROUGH THE FIRST 25 GAMES OF 2011. Burchell has already surpassed her single-season career-high for HRs (five in 2009) and hits (25).

Watch Out For the Lady Vol “Big Inning” The Lady Vols have long made the “Big Inning” a major part of its offensive repetoire. So far in 2011, Tennessee has plated at least three runs in an inning 37 TIMES. In fact, UT has posted at least one three-run outburst in a frame during 20 of its 25 games played this season.

Quick Out of the Gate The Lady Vols waste no time in jumping on their opponents this season. Amazingly, TENNESSEE HAS TALLIED AT LEAST ONE RUN DURING THE FIRST INNING IN 15 OF THEIR 25 CONTESTS IN 2011 AND ARE 14-1 IN THOSE MATCH-UPS. The largest outburst of the season in the initial frame was nine runs in the second meeting with Michigan State. IN FACT, 46 OF THE LADY VOLS’ RUNS HAVE COME IN THE FIRST INNING WHILE 120 OF UT’S 213 TOTAL RUNS (56%) HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE OPENING THREE FRAMES.

2011 TENNESSEE LADY VOL SOFTBALL Who Scores First REALLY Matters A trend is developing in 2011 as the team that scores first during Tennessee softball contests usually ends up putting the “W” in the victory column. THE LADY VOLS ARE 17-1 THIS YEAR WHEN TALLYING THE FIRST RUN ON THE SCOREBOARD AND JUST 4-3 WHEN THEIR OPPONENT SCORES FIRST. The only time Tennessee lost after scoring first was in the marathon 5-4, 10-inning defeat at #23 Kentucky on March 13.

The Grand Salami!

After registering five grand slams during the 2010 season, the Tennessee Lady Vols are off to a powerful start with FOUR GRAND SLAMS THUS FAR IN THE FIRST 25 GAMES OF 2011. Juniors Jessica Spigner and Shelby Burchell each blasted their second career “grand salamis” in wins over Boise State (2/18) and Cal Poly (2/18) on the same day, respectively. Senior Kelly Grieve registered her first career grand slam during an 18-0 (5 inn.) win over ETSU on Feb. 15. Sophomore Kat Dotson got her first career grand slam as part of a record setting nine RBI effort in UT’s 16-2 (6 inn.) rout of Tennessee State on March 15. It wasn’t until Game #24 of 2010 that UT posted its third grand slam of the season, while it took just seven contests for the 2011 Big Orange crew to pull the feat.

Chasing Some Personal Milestones Lady Vol Co-Head Coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly are within (or have already) reach of some impressive coaching milestones. Karen Weekly (now has 709 WINS) achieved the 700-win plateau in Cathedral City, Calif., with UT’s 4-1 win over #25 BYU, while her husband Ralph currently sits at 987 TRIUMPHS, just 13 from reaching a staggering total of 1,000 wins.

An Unprecedented Streak...

Unprecedented not for wins, that occurred back in 2006 when UT won its first 24 games of the season, but for CONSECUTIVE RUN-RULE VICTORIES. By run-ruling its FIRST SEVEN OPPONENTS of 2011, Tennessee surpassed its longest such streak (at any time) of five straight run-rule triumphs established during both the 2005 & 2006 campaigns.

Tennessee is now averaging 8.52 runs per contest this year, has outscored its 25 foes by a 213-47 total and now has 13 RUN-RULE VICTORIES. Tennessee Classic History Since getting back in the business of hosting tournaments with the opening of the Lee Softball Stadium prior to the 2008 season, the Lady Vols have registered a perfect 20-0 mark (16-0 combined in the 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2011 Tennessee Classics and 4-0 at the 2010 Tennessee Inviational).

Since the Weeklys arrival to start the 2002 campaign, UT is 30-0 in its home-hosted, regular-season tourneys. Over the entire 16-year program history, the Big Orange maintains a 81-13 overall mark in regular-season tournaments in Knoxville.

A Touch of CLASS! Lady Vol senior outfielder Kelly Grieve has been chosen as one of 30 NCAA Division I softball candidates for the fifth-annual Lowe’s Senior CLASS award. The honor is presented to a senior softball player who best demonstrates her ability on the field, in the community and in the classroom. The Asheville, N.C., native currently owns a 3.24 grade-point average in animal science/pre-veterinary medicine in hopes of applying to Vet School after graduation and was honored in 2010 as a first team ESPN Academic All-District IV selection.

On the Road Again...

Maybe Willie Nelson’s famous song should have been Tennessee softball’s new theme as the Lady Vols went on a marathon 11-game/11-day road trip through Las Vegas, Nev., for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic and Cathedral City, Calif., for the prestigious Cathedral City Classic over Feb. 18-27. UT COMPLETED ITS TRIP WITH A 9-2 RECORD. Last February, the Big Orange went on a 10-day jaunt through Las Cruces, N.M., and Cathedral City, Calif., recording a 7-2 overall mark combined at the Troy Cox Classic (5-0 and won the championship) and the Cathedral City Classic (2-2) Prior to the 2010 excursion, Tennessee also went on a 10-day trip, stretching from Feb. 15-24, 2007. The Orange & White should remember that fondly, having swept through the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev., a side visit for a single contest against Cal State Fullerton and the Palm Springs Classic with a perfect 11-0 record.

Just Put Raven Out There From the Start...She’ll Usually Be There Anyway Raven Chavanne makes a habit of getting the Lady Vol offense off and running to open games. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native has now reached base leading off UT’s first turn at the plate 14 TIMES IN 25 GAMES during 2011 and 46 TIMES OVER 89 CAREER CONTESTS. Included in that total are 30 singles, 10 walks, four hit by pitches and twice reaching via an error.

In opportunities leading off any inning for Tennessee during her brief career in the Orange & White, CHAVANNE HAS NOW REACHED 77 TIMES IN 141 TOTAL CHANCES OR 55% OF THE TIME she’s had an opportunity to set the table for the UT offense (22-OF-41 IN 2011, 54%) Ring-A-Round the Lineup Card Tennessee’s offense has made a habit in recent years of taking numerous trips through the batting order while putting up big run totals. Dominant in February & March Since Weeklys Arrival Since the Weeklys arrived in 2002 to take over the Tennessee program, the team has seen incredible success during the opening month of the season. IN FEBRUARY, THE BIG ORANGE BOAST A RECORD OF 143-26-1 SINCE STARTING 2002 AND ARE A STAGGERING 96-10 SINCE THE BEGINNING OF 2005. Tennessee won 33 straight February contests during a streak that stretched from the opening of the 2006 campaign through part of 2008 until a 4-1 loss to USF on Feb. 17, 2008. The only February defeats since ‘05 are to No. 1 California (2005), Notre Dame (2005), USF (2008), No. 21 and eventual ‘09 national champ Washington (2009), No. 6 and eventual ‘10 national champ UCLA (2010), UCF (2010), Pacific (2010), No. 10 Stanford (2010 & 2011) and UNLV (2011).

IN THE MONTH OF MARCH, TENNESSEE OWNS A 168-43 RECORD SINCE OPENING THE 2002 CAMPAIGN. The best month during that eight-year stretch occurred in 2007 when the Lady Vols went 24-2 overall.

Didn’t Take Long for the SEC to Notice the Big Orange!

Well that didn’t take long as the Southeastern Conference awarded its initial SEC Player of the Week award (2/14) to a member of the Big Orange. Sophomore outfielder Raven Chavanne got a great “Valentine’s Day” present from the league office by reaping the third SEC weekly honor of her career after hitting .692 with a team-best two HR’s and 10 RBIs at the Stetson Lead-off Classic.

She had picked up previous nods as the SEC Player of the Week and the SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 22 and March 1, 2010, respectively.

Chavanne Went On Another Impressive Streak!

Sophomore outfielder Raven Chavanne managed a streak of 10 CONSECUTIVE PLATE APPEARANCES REACHING SAFELY VIA HIT OR WALK (11 if you count her reaching via a Stetson error during a Feb. 12 match-up) over a four-contest stretch (Stetson, Boston College, Michigan State, ETSU).

In fact, out of first 18 total plate appearances in 2011, Chavanne failed to reach base in some manner just three times.

Perhaps the most amazing part of her total effort is that seven of those plate appearances (a perfect 6-for-6 hitting and a walk) occurred during games against Boston College and Michigan State on Sun., Feb. 13, a day SHE WAS SUFFERING THE EFFECTS OF FOOD POISONING. This isn’t the first time the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native has been involved in a big streak of some kind. The most impressive to date occurred during her rookie season as Chavanne reached over 22 straight plate appearances by hit, walk, error or fielder’s choice and also had a skein of eight straight base hits.

A Powerful Statement in Florida...

During its four-game tournament title run at the Stetson Leadoff Classic in DeLand, Fla., the Lady Vols made quite a statement by outscoring its opponents by a 44-2 margin with four consecutive run-rules, hitting .475 as a team, posting five doubles, seven home runs, swiping 13 bases and registering double-digit run totals in each contest.

Individually, Raven Chavanne hit .692 overall (9-for-13) while leading the Tennessee team in every major offensive category at the Stetson Leadoff Classic, including those for runs (nine), hits (nine), doubles (two) home runs (two), RBIs (10), stolen bases (four), slugging percentage (1.308) and on-base percentage (.733). Despite suffering from the effects of food poisoning on Sunday during UT’s games against Boston College (3-for-3, HR, two RBIs) and Michigan State (3-for-3, 2B, 2 RBIs), the 5-8 sophomore outfielder managed to go a perfect 6-for-6 at the plate combined with five tallies, a double, a HR and four RBIs. She reached base safely 13 of the 15 times she stepped into the batter’s box (by hit, walk or error), was on base following each of her last 10 plate appearances and takes a streak of nine consecutive plate appearances reaching safely via hit or walk into the Big Orange’s Tuesday home-opening match-up against ETSU. Junior first baseman/catcher Shelby Burchell led the team with a .700 batting average (7-for-10) to go along with a HR and four RBIs, sophomore right fielder Kat Dotson hit .636 (7-for-11) with a HR and nine RBIs and sophomore second baseman Lauren Gibson posted a .545 average (6-for-11) with a HR and nine RBIs. During her opening weekend Lady Vol freshman shortstop Madison Shipman blasted her first collegiate homer while posting a .500 mark (5-for-10) at the plate, a double and four runs batted in. Rookie pitcher Ellen Renfroe led the way from the circle by going 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 12 K’s in 10 IP while tossing complete game shutouts in her first two collegiate starts. Junior Cat Hosfield (1-0, 0.00 ERA, 4 K’s in 5.0 IP) and sophomore Ivy Renfroe (1-0, 2.80 ERA, 4 K’s in 5.0 IP) also picked up complete-game wins.

A Fixture in the Rankings The Lady Vols are making a habit of finding themselves in the rankings according to the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll. TENNESSEE HAS NOW BEEN RANKED IN EACH OF THE LAST 109 POLLS DATING BACK TO THE PRESEASON RELEASE OF THE 2004 SEASON. A big opening weekend in ‘04 boosted UT from unranked status into the Top 25 at No. 19 and the squad hasn’t left since. The highest ranking achieved by Tennessee during that span occurred in 2007 when UT spent 11 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the way to a national runner-up finish.

Tennessee opened the 2011 campaign at No. 4 in the USA Today/NFCA rankings, UT’s highest starting position to begin the year since being rated No. 2 in the 2007 preseason listing. The Lady Vols also started at No. 3 prior to the 2006 season.

Tennessee took its sixth all-time trip to the prestigious Cathedral City Classic (formerly known as the Palm Springs Classic) in Cathedral City, Calif., over Feb. 24-26. UT had visited the event previously in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010, while also participating in the Cathedral City Kick-

The Orange & White maintain a 22-5 all-time record at the Cathedral City Classic and are 27-5 overall at the Big League Dreams Sports Park (site of event) if you include the ‘08 C.C. Kick-off. Tennessee was a perfect 5-0 this season with wins over UCSB, San Diego State, #25 BYU, Loyola Marymount and #2 UCLA. Home Openers = Victory Throughout Lady Vol softball history, the first contest of the year in the friendly confines of either Tyson Park or Lee Softball Stadium has usually equaled victory for the Orange & White. Tennessee has won its last 11 home openers dating back to a 6-5 home-opening loss to Kansas on March 10, 2000, and holds a 15-1 mark all-time in Knoxville lidlifters. Under the guidance of co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly, UT is a perfect 10-0 in such match-ups after crushing ETSU, 18-0 (5 inn.), on Feb. 15, 2011, at Lee Softball Stadium.

Extra Softball is Often No Trouble for the Lady Vols Tennessee now owns an 8-2 mark over its last 10 extra-inning contests since the start of the ‘09 season. The lone defeats in extra frames over the last three years occurred on March 21, 2010, when UT dropped a hard-fought, 7-6, contest to #6 Georgia in eight innings, and on March 13, 2011, in Lexington, Ky., when the Big Orange suffered a heart-breaking, 5-4 loss in 10 innings to #23 Kentucky.

We Got Win Number 700!

Now in its 16th year, Tennessee entered the 2011 season with an all-time record of 698-313-2. On opening day (Feb. 12) at the Stetson Leadoff Classic in DeLand, Fla., UT blasted Michigan State (11-2, 5 inn.) and Stetson (11-0, 5 inn.) to pick up all-time wins number 699 and 700.

Achieving the feat made the Big Orange the fourth program in SEC history to reach the milestone. Co-Head Coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly have guided UT to 486 wins over their nine+ years at the helm, an average of almost 52 wins a season.

Opened the Season with a “W” Tennessee is 9-7 all-time in season openers and 7-3 under co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly after blasting Michigan State 11-2 (5 inn.) to christen its 2011 campaign on Feb. 12 at the Stetson Leadoff Classic in DeLand, Fla. UT has now won seven of its last eight season openers with the lone loss occurring on Feb. 12, 2010, to eventual national champion #8 UCLA at the NTC Division I Elite Invitational.

Tennessee the Early Pick in Loaded SEC Eastern Division The No. 4-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol softball team was picked at the top of the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division according to the 2011 preseason poll of the league’s 11 softball coaching staffs. UT also garnered three votes as the choice to win the league’s regular season crown.

With 17 accumulated points the Big Orange led No. 3 Georgia (18 pts.) by a single point and defending SEC East titlist No. 5 Florida (22 pts.) by five tallies. Kentucky (37 pts.) and South Carolina (46 pts.) rounded out the five programs in the division. Amazingly, the SEC East enters the 2011 campaign boasting three of the top five teams in the country per the preseason USA Today/NFCA rankings.

The defending SEC regular season and tournament champion Alabama Crimson Tide (10 pts.) was selected to repeat both its division title and SEC overall crown. The gap between the sixth-ranked Tide and No. 19 LSU was nine points, while Auburn rated third with 33 tallies. Arkansas (fourth/36 pts.), Mississippi State (fifth/39 points) and Ole Miss (sixth/51 pts.) completed the West standings.

According to an announcement by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) at its 2010 convention in San Diego, Calif., Tennessee Lady Vol Co-Head Softball Coach Ralph Weekly has been chosen as one of two inductees for the NFCA Hall of Fame Class of 2011. Weekly will join Ithaca Head Coach Deb Pallozzi in ceremonies to be held late next year at the annual NFCA Convention slated for Las Vegas, Nev. In a 23-year career that has spanned portions of three decades and included almost 1,000 overall victories, Weekly has been successful at every stop along the way. He guided Pacific Lutheran to a pair of NAIA national championships (1988 & 1992) during a nine-year stint in Tacoma, Wash., and helped build UT-Chattanooga into a Southern Conference force alongside his wife and co-head coach Karen Weekly from 1995-2001, winning four regular season and SoCon Tournament titles.

Since arriving at Rocky Top prior to the 2002 campaign, the Weeklys’ have built the Lady Vol softball program into a national powerhouse. Under the duo’s guidance, Tennessee had won 465 games (entering 2011) while registering four top-three finishes at the Women’s College World Series during the last six years (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010) and winning both the 2006 Southeastern Conference Tournament and 2007 SEC regular season championships. Along the way UT became the first league school to reach No. 1 in the national rankings, staying in the lofty position for a thenrecord 11 consecutive weeks back in 2007, and the first SEC squad to qualify for the best-of-three WCWS Championship Series (2007). During the Weeklys’ nine-season stay in Knoxville, Tennessee has reaped 18 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American selections, 30 NFCA All-Region nods, more than 30 combined All-SEC or SEC All-Freshman choices and an impressive 11 ESPN Academic All-Americans.

Weekly has also enjoyed a long and storied career involved with the USA Softball program, including serving as a hitting coach, third-base coach and team leader with the high-profile gold medal-winning 1996 (first-ever Olympic softball competition) and 2000 U.S. Olympic Softball squads.

2011 TENNESSEE LADY VOL SOFTBALL Tennessee Led the Nation With Three Players on USA Softball “Watch List” The 2011 Tennessee Lady Vol softball team managed a nation-leading three inclusions on the “Top 50 Watch List” for the 10th-annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year award as UT sophomore outfielder Raven Chavanne, senior outfielder Kelly Grieve and sophomore pitcher Ivy Renfroe were each tabbed to the prestigious list according to a release by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA).

California, Arizona State, Arizona, UCLA, Washington, Florida, Alabama, Hawai’i, Missouri, Michigan and Oklahoma followed UT by each boasting a pair of selections.

Tennessee softball has now had at least one player included on the organization’s preseason “Watch List” for eight consecutive seasons (20042011), including former Lady Vol All-Americans such as Monica Abbott, Kristi Durant, Sarah Fekete, Lindsay Schutzler, Tonya Callahan and Tiffany Huff. This marks the fifth time in the last six years (2006, 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011) that the Lady Vols have had at least two players chosen to the national watch list. UT had a program-high four individuals (Abbott, Durant, Fekete, Schutzler) included on the 2006 “Watch List” and three (Abbott, Callahan, Schutzler) incorporated as part of the 2007 version.

Preseason All-SEC Accolades for Renfroe, Chavanne The Tennessee Lady Vols boasted a pair of selections to the 13-member 2011 Preseason All-SEC Team as sophomore outfielder Raven Chavanne and sophomore pitcher Ivy Renfroe were tabbed to the listing through a vote by the league’s softball coaching staffs.

On her way to 2010 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American, NFCA All-Southeast Region, All-SEC and SEC All-Freshman honors as well as being named a Top 25 Finalist for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year trophy, Chavanne hit a team-leading .455 overall with a squad-best 95 hits, 64 runs scored, five doubles, five triples, three home runs and 26 RBIs while swiping a UT-best 37 stolen bases and posting a .511 on-base percentage in her initial campaign at Rocky Top. Renfroe registered a sterling 31-6 mark from the circle with a 2.41 ERA and 235 strikeouts in 232.1 innings of work to go along with 15 complete games and six solo shutouts during her freshman season. For her efforts she earned Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region, All-SEC, SEC All-Freshman, All-SEC Tournament and All-Women’s College World Series accolades. Making a Memorable First Impression At the Stetson Leadoff Classic in DeLand, Fla., on Feb. 12, 2001, freshman Ellen Renfroe became the 10th Lady Vol pitcher to win her starting debut while clad in the Orange & White by tossing a complete-game, three-hit shutout with six K’s. 2011 TENNESSEE LADY VOL SOFTBALL We Love the Spotlight!

The Tennessee Lady Vols are SET TO BE FEATURED ON TELEVISION 10 TIMES during the 2011 campaign via ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SportSouth or CSS. Following a regional broadcast on SportSouth against South Carolina at 12:30 p.m. ET on March 26, UT will kick-off its nationally televised slate by hosting Auburn at the Lee Softball Stadium on Fri., April 1st, live on ESPNU at 8 p.m. ET. Six of the scheduled broadcasts will occur on the road as UT ventures to Baton Rouge, La., to face LSU on Sat., April 16th, at 11 a.m. CT live on ESPN2, and then wraps up the regular season by traveling to Gainesville, Fla., to battle defending SEC Eastern Division Champ Florida on Sat., May 7th, at noon ET on ESPN and on Sun., May 8th, on ESPNU at 3 p.m. ET. Also slated for regional road broadcast are both ends of an April 6 doubleheader at Georgia via CSS and a single game at Ole Miss on SportSouth (April 10 at 2 p.m. ET).

Just one year removed from signing the nation’s top-rated collegiate softball recruiting class, Tennessee co-head coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly have followed up on that success by pulling in what ESPN RISE HAS DEEMED THE NO. 2 CONTINGENT IN THE COUNTRY FOR 2011.

Composed of a trio of student-athletes, including pitcher/infielders Cheyanne Tarango and Haley Fagan as well as catcher/infielder Hannah Akamine, the Lady Vols ranked second out of a stellar group that included five Pacific 10 schools, three Southeastern Conference programs and single members of both the Big 10 and Big 12.

A native of Escondido, Calif., Hannah Akamine is the third of a trio of sisters to play collegiate softball, joining her siblings former Arizona pitcher Sarah Akamine and current Penn State pitcher/utility player Lisa Akamine. Having played at catcher, shortstop and in the outfield during her interscholastic career, she has recorded stat totals of .306 with seven RBIs as a freshman and .389 with five HR’s and 20 RBI during her sophomore campaign at Escondido H.S. She was injured during her junior season in 2010. For her stellar efforts during the ‘09 season, Akamine was chosen by the San Diego Hall of Champions to its 2009 Breitbard Athletic Association All-California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) San Diego Section Second Team. Having played 16-U and 18-U Gold ball for the San Diego Legacy, Akamine helped guide her squad to a pair of Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Nationals appearances (2008, 2009) with a ninth-place finish in 2009. She chose to come to Tennessee from among a list of schools that included Hawai’i, Penn State and Alabama, claiming that being a Lady Vol has been her dream since she was eight years old.

An in-state product out of Cornersville, Tenn., Haley Fagan has been a two-sport standout in both softball and basketball at Cornersville H.S. The 6-0 right handed pitcher/first baseman helped lead her high school program to back-to-back third-place finishes at both the 2008 and 2009 Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) Class A State Girls’ Softball Tournaments as well as consecutive TSSAA Sectional and Region 6-A titles (2008 & 2009) and three straight District 11-A championships (2008, 2009, 2010). Fagan, who owns 29 career pitching wins and an earned run average of 1.25, picked up numerous honors following her junior campaign in 2010, including selections to the Middle Tennessee Softball Coaches Association All-Mid State First Team and nods as both TSSAA All-District 11-A and as the District 11-A Most Valuable Player. As a member of Tennessee Fury Gold, Fagan participated in both the ASA Gold and ESPN/RISE Premier High School Division National Tournaments in 2010. Previously in Gold action, she helped Team Worth to the 2009 ASA 16-U National Tournament and to a national championship victory at the 2009 American Fastpitch Association Nationals. On the hardwood, she has been equally honored, being chosen as 2009 & 2010 TSSAA AllDistrict 11-A and All-Region 6-A while helping Cornersville to consecutive District 11-A basketball crowns in 2009 and 2010. She helped her squad to the 2009 TSSAA Region 6-A and Sectional titles on the way to Murfreesboro, Tenn., and the initial Tennessee State Class A Girls’ Basketball Tournament appearance in her school’s history.

A highly decorated player out Anaheim Hills, Calif., Cheyanne Tarango ventures to Tennessee with an impressive list of accolades in tow.

Most recently, she joined current Lady Vol freshman Madison Shipman as a member of the USA Softball Junior Women’s National Team that posted a perfect 9-0 mark on the way to a gold medal finish at the III Pan American Championship in Bogota, Colombia, over Aug. 6-15, 2010. During the U.S. squad’s dominant run, Tarango scored a pair of runs, knocked in three RBIs and recorded the win from the circle by firing three innings of three-hit pitching work with a trio of K’s as the Red, White & Blue drilled Mexico, 15-3 (6 inn.), in pool play. A 2010 ESPN/RISE Third Team AllAmerican, 2010 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) High School First Team All-West Region selection and one of the 2010 “Top Five Softball Players in Orange County,” at Canyon H.S., Tarango has also been tabbed as All-State, All-CIF, All-Orange County and All-Century League following all three years of her high school career (2008, 2009, 2010). As a junior in 2010, Tarango hit .413 at the dish with five HR’s and 17 RBIs while posting a 20-7-1 mark from the circle with a 0.70 ERA and 219 K’s. She hit .366 with seven HR’s and 22 RBIs as a sophomore in 2009 with a 24-8 pitching mark, a 1.08 ERA and 234 strikeouts. During her rookie season at Canyon, Tarango went 22-8 from the circle with a 1.57 ERA and 290 K’s while tallying a .357 average with four big flies and 21 RBIs. She was honored as the Century League Most Valuable Player (one of two such selections in her career – 2009 & 2010) in helping lead her high school squad to the 2009 league title. In her most recent Gold action, playing the last two summers with the Worth Firecrackers, Tarango was a part of back-to-back Fireworks Colorado 18-U Gold & Canada Cup 18-U Gold titlists while helping her squad to a third-place finish at the 2009 ASA Gold Nationals. She picked Tennessee from a list of schools that included California, UCLA and Notre Dame.

Through the Years for UT The Lady Vols are in their 16th season of softball. The first six seasons were under the direction of Jim Beitia, while Feb. 12th began the 10th year of the tenure of Co-Head Coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly.

Charting the No-Hitters...UT Now Has 34 No-No’s with Eight Perfect Games The Lady Vol program owns a staggering 34 no-hitters in program history and eight perfect games. The majority belong to former four-time All-American and Olympian Monica Abbott. The most recent no-hitter came on April 8, 2010, as then-freshman Ivy Renfroe added her name to the lengthy list with a one-walk, seven-strikeout blanking of Western Carolina in UT’s 11-0 (5 inn.) rout. A 2010 SEC All-Tournament selection, an ESPN Academic All District IV choice and an inclusion to the Top 50 Watch List for the annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year award, Grieve posted 26 multi-hit and nine multi-RBI games in 2010…Recorded an eight-game hitting streak from April 14-May 1 during which she hit .414 overall (12-for-29) in a stretch against Arkansas, Presbyterian, #4 Florida and at #4 Alabama…Set the tone during the NCAA Super Regional opener at No. 2 Michigan by going 2-for-3 with three, two-out RBIs in UT’s 5-0 rout…Hit .333 with three runs scored during UT’s four contests at the WCWS…Stole 26 bases in 32 attempts during the season and tallied 12 doubles with three triples, three HR’s and 30 RBIs.

On her way to Louisville Slugger/ NFCA All-American, All-Southeast Region and All-SEC honors in 2010 as well as a Top 25 Finalist for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year trophy, Chavanne hit a team-leading .455 overall with a squad-best 95 hits, 64 runs scored, five doubles, five triples, three home runs and 26 RBIs while swiping a UT-best 37 stolen bases…Raven was among the NCAA batting average leaders all season long, finishing at No. 7 in the country…She guided the Lady Vol squad in multi-hit games with 29, including a quartet of four-hit efforts…

She even posted strings of eight consecutive hits, reached over 22 straight plate appearances by hit, walk, error or fielder’s choice and posted a UT-best 11-game hitting skein.

Garnered 2010 Louisville Slugger/ NFCA All-American, All-Southeast Region and All-Southeastern Conference honors and was also named SEC Co-Freshman of the Year…Dotson posted a .391 batting average with 19 multihit and 10 multi-RBI games…Scored 54 runs, tallied five doubles, three triples, three HR’s and 37 RBIs while swiping 29 bases…Registered a career-high four hits on March 23rd versus Kentucky with a double and three RBIs…Blasted a gamewinning, two-run HR at Auburn in the sixth inning to guide Tennessee past AU, 2-1…Was named USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week on March 30th after hitting .769 (10-for-13) against Kentucky and Ole Miss with six RBIs and a string of seven consecutive hits.

Picked up Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region honors in 2010 after hitting .350 with a team-best 14 doubles, 34 runs scored, eight home runs and a squad-high 58 RBIs…Also picked up a pitching victory during a 10-0 (5 inn.) triumph over Austin Peay…Hit her first career grand slam versus #11 Oklahoma and a three-run home run versus #16 Ohio State, accounting for all of UT’s scoring in both victories…

Blasted two homers in a win over Illinois State, doubled twice in a single game against both Illinois State and at Arkansas and posted three hits in a single game on five occasions in 2010…Led Tennessee with 17 multi-RBI contests to go along with 14 multi-hit efforts...Currently rates seventh in UT’s career record book for HR’s with 22.

Posted a 31-6 mark with a 2.41 ERA and 235 K’s in 232.1 innings with 15 complete games and six solo shutouts during her freshman campaign on the way to Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Region, All-SEC, All-SEC Tournament and All-WCWS honors…Is the only pitcher besides Monica Abbott in UT history to post 30 or more wins in a single season…Finished 14th in all of NCAA Division I in pitching victories and fifth in saves (five)…Tossed a spectacular two-hit shutout in the NCAA Super Regional opener at No. 2 Michigan, flirting with a no-hitter into the seventh…

Became the second pitcher in Lady Vol history to win a game at the WCWS, posting victories over #3 Arizona and #9 Georgia…Also had wins over ranked teams #11 Oklahoma (first career win), #16 Ohio State and #16 LSU.
