Big Orange Slices... Chalk Up Another Rare Feat Achieved  Only once before in Lady Vol soccer history had two players totaled 10 or more goals during the same season. That occurred back during 1998 as Allison Campbell (17 goals) and Laura Lauter (12 goals) crossed into double-digits. Well Tennessee sophomore forward Caroline Brown (10 goals) and senior forward Emily Dowd (10 goals) have now joined that duo in 2011. Brown scored her 10th during the thrilling rally past Ole Miss on Oct. 7, while Dowd hit double figures with her match-winner against Mississippi State on Oct. 9. It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over!  The old adage proved especially true for the Big Orange soccer squad on Fri., Oct. 7, as Tennessee showed its match truly wasn’t over till it was over against Ole Miss. UT spotted the Rebels a 3-0 lead at the half before the Lady Vols began a stirring rally to post a 4-3 (OT) victory on senior forward Chelsea Hatcher’s “golden goal” at 91:33. The occurrence marked the LARGEST COMEBACK IN UT SOCCER HISTORY and also just the fourth time in UT annals that the team allowed three goals during a match and still managed to win. The Orange & White spotted #15 Duke a 3-1 halftime lead back on Aug. 27, 2004, before rallying for a 4-3 (OT) triumph. Tennessee also emerged victorious over Georgia (4-3, OT) on Oct. 27, 2000, and Colorado College (7-5) on Nov. 1, 1998. Looking at the Trends  At this point in any season certain trends begin developing statistically with a team and Tennessee soccer in 2011 is certainly no different. Entering the weekend of Oct. 14-16, the Lady Vols are an impressive 7-0-0 during day matches but just 4-3-0 during night contests. UT is a perfect 7-0-0 when leading at the half, but only 1-2-0 when behind at the break. The Big Orange is 10-0-0 in contests in which they total at least two goals and just 1-2-0 when scoring a single tally or less. Tennessee is also 9-0-0 when permitting one goal or less and just 2-3-0 when allowing two or more scores. Eckel Closing in on Freshman Keeper Records  Rookie net minder Julie Eckel is closing in on some long time freshman standards in Lady Vol goalkeeping history. Former Big Orange keeper Ellen Dean set the rookie records of 11 victories and 5.3 shutouts back in 1998 in helping Tennessee to a 12-8 overall record. Eckel currently sits at 11 WINS AND FIVE SOLO SHUTOUTS THROUGH JUST HER FIRST 14 MATCHES in the Orange & White, leaving the Cordova, Tenn., native with plenty of opportunity to surpass Dean’s standards down the stretch in 2011. Former Lady Vol GK Sarah Kitchin set the rookie mark for goals-against-average at 1.05 over just 10 matches as a sub back in 2006. Eckel is currently ahead of that standard in possession of a 0.92 GAA. Happened for the First Time Since 2006  Senior forward Emily Dowd has accomplished something that no Lady Vol has pulled off since Kylee Rossi back in 2006. What is that feat you ask? Why she’s the first UT player since 2006 to score two goals in a match at least three times in a single season. The Gainesville, Fla., native has already tallied a pair of scores during wins over Middle Tennessee, Coastal Carolina and Arkansas. In fact, since Head Coach Angela Kelly took over the program in 2000, Dowd and Rossi are the only Tennessee players to accomplish it. During Kelly’s time at Rocky Top no one has ever scored two or more goals in a match four times in a year.

A Career Match & Week for Alexis Owens!  Junior Alexis Owens truly made her first start of the 2011 campaign a memorable one by registering the FIRST TENNESSEE HAT TRICK since Kayla Lockaby turned the feat back on Sept. 8, 2002, and only the 10th in UT history, during the Big Orange’s 4-2 victory over #6 Florida (9/25). She had entered the match with just two career goals over 43 matches to that point in her collegiate career.

The Scouting Report Scouting Kentucky

 Tennessee maintains an 11-8 all-time advantage in its series versus Kentucky, and the two squads have split the last six meetings, 3-3. UT is 5-2 at the UK Soccer Complex, having won the last five in Lexington, Ky.  The Wildcats enter this weekend with a 10-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in SEC action. Its last time out UK dropped a 2-0 decision at home versus LSU. Kentucky’s league triumphs have come against Alabama (4-1), South Carolina (1-0) and Arkansas (2-1, OT). UK is 0-3 versus ranked teams in 2011.  Junior F Kelsey Hunyadi leads the Kentucky offense with eight goals and seven assists, while sophomore F Caitlin Landis owns four goals and a helper. Freshman GK Kayla Price possesses a 1.23 GAA, 56 saves and a 10-4 record with four solo shutouts between the pipes.

Scouting Vanderbilt

 Tennessee trails Vanderbilt 7-9-2 in the all-time series, making VU one of just two SEC teams (Florida) to own a winning record versus the Lady Vols. UT hasn’t had much success in Nashville against the Commodores as witnessed by a 2-4-1 mark.  The ‘Dores begin this weekend with an 8-6 overall record and a 2-4 tally in SEC play. VU is currently riding a two-match winning streak, however, after stunning then-SEC leading LSU (2-1, 2OT on Oct. 7) and topping Arkansas (2-0 on Oct. 9).  Senior F/MF Candace West guides the way for the Vandy offense with four goals and two assists for 10 total points, one of a quartet of VU players with at least two scores in 2011. Junior GK Jessica Amlaw has seen the most action in net (547:35), posting a 1.15 GAA, 23 saves and a 3-2 record with two shutouts.
