THE STORYLINES BEATING THE BEARS
• UT defeated No. 5 Baylor, 4-0, in the ITA National Indoors first round on Friday to advance to its first National Indoor quarterfinal since 2002. • The Lady Vols claimed the doubles point for the seenth time this season, getting wins from the top two positions. Brynn Boren, Kata Szekely and Caitlyn Williams capped the scoring with wins in singles. • It was the first time Baylor had been shut out since Feb. 16, 2007.
ITA NATIONAL INDOOR HISTORY
• The Lady Vols are participating in their third consecutive ITA National Indoor Team Championships and 14th overall. All-time, UT is 10-21 in the tournament and netted opening round wins in 1992, 1998, 2002, & 2012. The Lady Vols faced USC in the 2000 National Indoors opening round, falling 7-1.
y SCORING SYSTEM
HOW THEY GOT HERE
• Tennessee recorded its first two wins of the 2012 season, defeating UC Davis, 5-0, and Tulsa, 4-0, to advance to its third consecutive ITA National Indoor Team Championships (Feb. 10-13) in Charlottesville, Va. • Blanking both opponents, Tennessee’s first two wins came in shutout fashion for just the fourth time in school history.
SCOUTING USC
• UT is 0-2 all-time against USC, both competitions being held in neutral sites. The first meeting came in 1990, a 7-2 loss in Gainesville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. • USC is ranked 16th and sits undefeated at 6-0. The Women of Troy upset No. 8 UNC, 4-2, Friday to advance. • Like UT, half of USC’s lineup is composed of freshmen. Four (2-5) of their players are undefeated in dual-match play at a combined 23-0.
New to the college game? All that matters is which team gets to four points first. In dual matches, teams first play a best-of-three doubles competition. Whichever team wins two of the three matches earns one point. Teams then play six singles matches, each worth one point. The team that takes four of the seven total available points wins the match. (Note: Doubles matches are eight-game pro sets. Singles matches are best-of-three sets.)

MORE NOTES: SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK (X’s 2)
• Sarah Toti has been recognized as the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week in each the first two weeks of the season. • Toti is just the third student-athlete to earn the honor in back-to-back weeks and just the second to open their career with the accolade. Doubles partner Brynn Boren was the first to do so last season. • The Las Vegas, Nev., native is the fifth Lady Vol in UT history to earn the honor. Boren was selected a UTrecord three times last season, while senior Natalie Pluskota garnered the recognition twice as a rookie. • Toti earned her second straight SEC honor after extending her singles winning streak to four and her doubles winning streak to nine, both marking career bests.
DOUBLE THE PLEASURE, DOUBLE THE FUN
• Tennessee has been stellar in doubles action thus far, winning 16 of its 18 overall matches. The Lady Vols have won the doubles point in all seven contests. The duo of Brynn Boren and Sarah Toti lead UT at 7-0, while Joanna Henderson and Kata Szekely are 4-0, and Natalie Pluskota and Caitlyn Williams are 5-2. • The Boren-Toti combination is UT’s only mainstay from last fall, while the other two duos are playing together for the first time. Dating back to Nov. 11, Boren and Toti have won a career-high 10 consecutive matches. They’ve done it against the best too, winning six of seven matches in 2011-12 against ranked competition.
SZEKELY’S START
STREAKING TO SUCCESS
• Tennessee has won five consecutive matches, all against ranked opponents, two against Top 10 teams and four against Top 25 foes. • The Lady Vols have posted three shutouts in that span and outscored their opponents 24-3.
• Junior Kata Szekely is the only Lady Vol that is undefeated in both singles (5-0) and doubles (4-0) dual-match play. • Szekely opened the season with the highestranked wins of her career vs. Virginia, defeating No. 30 Lindsey Hardenbergh, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (6) and UNC’s No. 16 Lauren McHale (6-3, 6-2).

(On Tennessee’s win over Baylor on Friday) “I think our team came into the tournament confident, especially after beating Michigan. They just all believed they could win today and that made a huge different. If you don’t have a full team that believes in themselves, it doesn’t matter. I’m just so proud of them. They played great and competed really hard.”
