THE STORYLINES MOST RECENTLY...

• UT won its third consecutive match Friday, dominating No. 24 Notre Dame, 6-1. The Lady Vols swept doubles and clinched the point for the fifth time this season. From there, four players won their third consecutive singles matches and five overall won in straight sets. • Up comfortably at 6-0, UT decided to retire Natalie Pluskota’s match. Pluskota was in her second set after winning the opening set in a 7-6 (4) tiebreaker.

LATEST ITA RANKINGS (FEB. 2)

• Per Thursday’s ITA Poll, UT moved up two spots to its highest ranking of the season at 17. UT opened the season ranked 18th (Jan. 3) and dropped to 19th after the first weekend (Jan. 24). UT has yet to play an unranked team and will add its third top-10 and fifth top-25 opponent Sunday against #10 Michigan (4-0).

y SCORING SYSTEM

ITA KICK-OFF CHAMPS

• Tennessee recorded its first two wins of the 2012 season last weekend, defeating UC Davis, 5-0, and Tulsa, 4-0, to advance to its third consecutive ITA National Indoor Team Championships (Feb. 10-13) in Charlottesville, Va. • Blanking both opponents, Tennessee’s first two wins came in shutout fashion for just the fourth time in school history.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN

• UT owns a 10-3 all-time record against the Wolverines, and has won all four meetings in Knoxville. After winning the first seven matchups, the two schools have traded the last six get-togethers. • The last time UM and UT met was in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Lady Vols defeated Michigan, 4-0, in Athens, Ga., to advance to the quarterfinals. • Michigan is undefeated at 4-0, coming off a 4-3 victory at No. 18 Vanderbilt on Friday.

New to the college game? All that matters is which team gets to four points first. In dual matches, teams first play a best-of-three doubles competition. Whichever team wins two of the three matches earns one point. Teams then play six singles matches, each worth one point. The team that takes four of the seven total available points wins the match. (Note: Doubles matches are eight-game pro sets. Singles matches are best-of-three sets.)

MORE NOTES: SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

• The Southeastern Conference released its first weekly honors of the 2012 season Wednesday. Tennessee freshman Sarah Toti was selected as the SEC Freshman of the Week for her performances against UC Davis and Tulsa. • Toti played a role in four of UT’s nine points over the weekend, winning her first two career dual-matches in singles, extending her doubles winning streak to seven (with Boren) and providing UT’s match-clinching point against Tulsa. Overall, Toti is 8-5 in singles and 15-3 in doubles. • The Las Vegas, Nev., native is the fifth Lady Vol in UT history to earn the honor. Brynn Boren was selected a UT-record three times last season, while senior Natalie Pluskota garnered the recognition twice as a rookie.

HOME SWEET HOME

• In home openers under co-head coaches Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick, posting 14 wins in 15 tries (.933). Since Patrick arrived in 1988, UT has gone 24-1 (.960) in its first match at home. • Tennessee has started 3-0 at home for the sixth consecutive year and 13th time in 15 years.

DOUBLE THE PLEASURE, DOUBLE THE FUN

• Tennessee has been stellar in doubles action thus far, winning 12 of its 13 overall matches. The Lady Vols have won the doubles point in all five contests. The duo of Brynn Boren and Sarah Toti lead UT at 5-0, while Joanna Henderson and Kata Szekely are 3-0, and Natalie Pluskota and Caitlyn Williams are 4-1. • The Boren-Toti combination is UT’s only mainstay from last fall, while the other two duos are playing together for the first time. Dating back to Nov. 11, Boren and Toti have won a career-high eight consecutive matches. They’ve done it against the best too, winning six of seven matches in 2011-12 against ranked competition.

SZEKELY’S START

• Junior Kata Szekely is the only Lady Vol that is undefeated in both singles (3-0) and doubles (3-0) dual-match play. • Szekely opened the season with the highestranked win of her career vs. Virginia, defeating No. 30 Lindsey Hardenbergh, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (6). She then topped that feat with a straight-set (6-3, 6-2) victory over UNC’s No. 16 Lauren McHale.

“QUOTABLE”  C0-HEAD COACH MIKE PATRICK (On Brynn Boren after Friday’s match) “She played super tonight. She faced a quality player and she has done a lot of work the last couple of weeks. I do not think she played her best tennis in New York and she knew that. She has come back and worked hard and is starting to play some really good tennis.”
