OPPONENTS AT A QUICK GLANCE
Following two victories on the road against Southeastern Conference foes South Carolina and Florida, the Lady Vols will close out their four-match SEC road trip with stops in Baton Rouge, La., and Fayetteville, Ark. Friday’s match against LSU will be a showdown between two SEC division leaders. Tennessee leads the East, while the TIgers sit atop the leaderboard in the West. Something will have to give, as UT has only lost once on the road this season, while LSU has only dropped one match at home. Tennessee has won seven straight meetings over the Arkansas dating back to Nov. of 2007. The overall series however is much closer, as the two teams have met 28 times, with each team winning 14 matches.
LSU enters Friday’s match against UT with an overall record of 10-3. Someone’s “O” has got to go, as both the Tigers and the Lady Vols are perfect in conference matches. Tennessee is 4-0 against SEC opponents, while LSU is 3-0. Arkansas has played three SEC opponents this season in Alabama, Ole Miss and Mississippi State. In their only match last weekend, the Razorbacks swept MSU, 3-0 at home.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT The Lady Vols are coming off a memorable weekend on the road, in which the team defeated South Carolina on Friday and topped the No. 6 Florida in a five-set thriller on ESPNU Sunday evening. In both matches this past weekend, sophomores Kelsey Robinson and Carly Sahagian each registered double-doubles. Sahagian tied a career-high in kills with 19 at UF, along with 13 digs. Robinson blasting 17 kills in addition to 12 digs versus Florida to give her double-double number nine. The SEC took note of Sahagian’s efforts, naming her the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. The awards weren’t done yet, as junior DeeDee Harrison earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week. In the matches versus USC and UF, Harrison blocked a total of 12 shots, with an average of 1.33 blocks per set. She also set career-highs in blocks assists and total blocks against South Carolina with seven and eight, respectively.

THE SEC (HISTORICALLY SPEAKING) Tennessee has won at least 15 SEC matches each of the last three seasons leading up to 2011, finishing with 15 in 2008 and 2010 and 16 in 2009. Patrick is 148-90 in his career in the SEC. In 12 of his 14 seasons, he led the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record against the conference. In 2004, Tennessee roared through the conference with a 15-1 record, tying for first in the SEC and winning the SEC Tournament a week later.

PATRICK’S MILESTONE WINS
ROB PATRICK /// HEAD COACH Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 15 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in seven of the last nine campaigns. Prior
to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988. Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively. During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

In July, former Iona College head coach Alan Edwards joined the UT staff as the team’s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. “I am very excited about adding Alan to our coaching staff,” Patrick said. “He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, both as a head coach and assistant coach from a number of Division-I programs, and is someone who I feel will be able to assimilate himself into our team very quickly.” Edwards was most recently the head coach at Iona for the past five seasons, where he led the Gaels to a 75-79 overall record and four appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. During his time in New Rochelle, Edwards mentored one of the top defensive players in NCAA history in Allison Neiters. One of the top volleyball performers in Iona College and MAAC history, she shattered the Iona and conference career record for digs with 2,682, the fifth highest all-time total in the NCAA. Neiters was named the 2007 and 2008 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and 2009 MAAC Libero of the Year, as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week 17 times during her career. She was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Honor Roll member, two-time CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict selection and earned Iona’s Academic Merit Award for holding a 3.50 or above grade point average.
After a standout career at Mississippi State as a player and coaching the past three seasons as an assistant at ETSU, Rachel Cooper joined the Tenneessee staff in May. Prior to her time as an assistant coach at ETSU, Cooper served as a graduate assistant with the Buccaneers, where she assisted in recruiting and coordinated team travel and community service. “The thing that most impresses me about Rachel is her work ethic,” Patrick said. “I’ve gotten to know her in recent years when she has come to work our camps and I am very excited that we have been able to add her to our coaching staff. She has experience in recruiting and understands the day-to-day responsibilities involved with running a high-level volleyball program. “Rachel was also an outstanding player in the SEC and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in our conference. Her personality is very engaging and inviting, and I expect that our players will be able to easily relate to her.” A Roscoe, Ill., native, Cooper was a four-year letter winner and starting outside hitter for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. A two-year captain and team Most Valuable Player, Cooper was also the first Bulldog athlete ever named SEC Player of the Week. She finished her career third all-time in kills with 1,405.

WHO’S BACK? Tennessee is returning three starters and a libero from last year’s roster: juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie Cikra, sophomore Kelsey Robinson and sophomore libero Ellen Mullins. Robinson was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection in her first season with the Lady Vols at outside hitter. Additional returners include sophomore setter Kylann Scheidt, senior setter Kelsey Mahoney and sophomore outside hitter Carly Sahagian.
WHO’S NEW? For one, most of the coaching staff is new. Patrick added two new assistants in the offseason: Alan Edwards, who was head coach at Iona; and Rachel Cooper, who was as an assistant at East Tennessee State. On the court, the Lady Vols feature plenty of new faces with the eighth-ranked recruiting class in the country. SEC COACHES’ SURVEY SAYS The Southeastern Conference coaches selected Tennessee to finish second in the Eastern Division, and they picked up two votes to win the SEC regularseason title. JETER OUT FOR SEASON Senior leader Kayla Jeter will miss the entire 2011 season with a knee injury, associate athletics director for sports medicine Jenny Moshak reported. Jeter suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee at team practice Aug. 19. Recovery time

By downing the No. 6 Gators, Tennessee broke Florida’s streak of 24 straight SEC wins, which dated back to their last conference loss in 2009 — which was also vs Tennessee. It’s been 7 years since the Lady Vols defeated Florida on their home court, as the 2004 topped Florida in the regular season finale, than returned a week later to win again in Gainesville to capture the SEC Tournament crown.
Following the two wins over South Carolina and No. 6 Florida on the road, the Orange and White are now ranked No. 23 in the AVCA coaching poll after receiving 214 points. FLORIDA DOESN’T LOSE AT HOME Florida’s loss to Tennessee was just its 21st defeat at home since Head Coach Mary Wise took over the team in 1991, and just the 52nd loss at home in program history. By being unofficially ranked No. 26 on Sunday, Tennessee is just the second unranked team to defeat Florida in Gainesville since 1991, and the first in 17 years. WE’RE GOING STREAKING By defeating Florida on Sunday, the Lady Vols are in the midst of a seven-match winning steak, which is their longest winning streak since 2008 when they won 9 in a row. . The win over UF also marks the seventh straight conference win, dating back to last season.
CAN’T MISS TELEVISION Tennessee games have aired 7 times on an ESPN network over the years and the Lady Vols are 5-2 in those matches. Overall, the team has won 11 of their last 13 televised matches.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS LSU LSU continued its winning ways with a threegame sweep over Mississippi State last week. The Tigers improved to 3-0 to start SEC action for the fourth time in the last six seasons. LSU also moved to 50-3 versus its fellow SEC Western Division rivals dating back to 2006. Madie Jones has belted double digit kills in six straight matches. Desiree Elliott is also deadly, as she has reached 10 or more kills in eight consecutive outings. Malorie Pardo, who leads the SEC in assists per set, tallied 44 assists against MSU. Defensively, LSU bottled up the Bulldogs to a season-low .069 hitting percentage. Meghan Mannari has reeled in double figures in digs in 11 of her 12 appearances. Since 2005, LSU has collected a 150-47 record and claimed six consecutive SEC Western Division titles. The Tigers also have tallied the nation’s 11th-best winning percentage and is one of 18 programs nationally to secure six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances going back to 2005.
ARKANSAS In their lone match last weekend, the Razorbacks posted a straight-set victory over Mississippi State (25-14, 25-16, 25-19) at home. The win improved Arkansas’ overall record to 10-4 and conference tally to 2-1. Kelli Stipanovich had a match-high 14 kills with a .407 hitting percentage, while Jasmine Norton and Raymariely Santos each registered a double-double performance in the win. Norton had 12 kills and 10 digs to complete her third consecutive double-double effort, while Santos had 29 assists and 14 digs. Against MSU, the Razorbacks posted a .385 team hitting percentage, their highest in a conference match since 2007. Arkansas had five players hit over .400 with at least five kills. Defensively, libero Christa Alvarez had a match-high 15 digs and fellow freshman KC Dobbins came in off the bench to add 10 digs of her own. The Razorbacks face Kentucky on Friday before Sunday’s match against UT is televised by SportSouth.

LSU - 10/10/10 BATON ROUGE: The Tennessee volleyball team dropped a hard-fought slugfest to 15thranked LSU on the road, falling 25-23, 30-28, 23-25, 25-20, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The two teams traded blows throughout, as the contest was a back-and-forth affair featuring a total of 43 tie scores and 17 lead changes. Kelsey Mahoney notched a double-double, leading the team with 31 assists and tallying 12 digs. Kelsey Robinson added a strong effort with a matchhigh 24 digs - 11/12/10 KNOXVILLE: Playing a rare Friday matinee at Thompson-Boling Arena, the University Tennessee volleyball team both out-hit and out-blocked LSU, but dropped a tight 3-1 decision to the Tigers, 25-18, 23-25, 24-26, 21-25. Kelsey Robinson led the Lady Vol attack, recording her fourth career double-double while posting a career-high 16 kills to go along with 14 digs and a pair of blocks.
LAST SEASON VS. ARKANSAS - 10/8/10 FAYETTEVILLE: Down and seemingly out on numerous occasions, the No. 22 University of Tennessee volleyball team dug down deep and found just enough to escape with a come-frombehind, 22-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 17-15, victory on the road at Arkansas The Lady Volunteers not only fought their way back from down two sets, but shook off a pair of match points to claim the win. Nikki Fowler posted her most dominating performance off the year, pounding out a season-high 24 kills on an amazing .440 hitting with only two errors in 50 swings. - 11/14/10 KNOXVILLE: The Tennessee volleyball team closed out the home portion of its 2010 schedule with an impressive sweep over Arkansas, 25-17, 25-15, 25-15. The Lady Volunteers never trailed in the match and posted their best defensive performance of the season, holding the Razorbacks to a season-low .000 hitting percentage. As a team, Tennessee hit .287 and nearly doubled-up Arkansas in the kills category with 41 to just 22 for the Razorbacks.

LADY VOL DUO GETS REWARDED For the first time since Oct. 20, 2008, a pair of Lady Vols in junior DeeDee Harrison and sophomore Carly Sahagian were bestowed conference honors. Sahagian, the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, was terrific against South Carolina and Florida, tallying 31 kills, 26 digs, three blocks and two services aces. She recorded double-doubles in both of those matches, and blasted a career-high 19 kills along with 13 digs at UF. Against USC, she registered 12 kills and 13 digs. On the season, Sahagian now has five double-doubles and ranks seventh in the league in hitting percentage, with a clip of .343. Against USC and UF, Harrison, the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, was a standout allaround performer. She blocked a total of 12 shots, with an average of 1.33 blocks per set and set careerhighs in blocks assists and total blocks against the Gamecocks. Offensively, she notched double-digits in kills in both matches. In 2008, former standout Nikki Fowler was the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week, along with current Lady Vol Kelsey Mahoneybeing named the Freshman of the Week.
NIFTY 50 Freshman Mary Pollmiller’s first year in Orange and White is off to a fantastic start. Because of injuries at the setter position, she has played all but a handful of points. She has seven matches of at least 50 assists this season, the last one coming in the Lady Vols’ five-set win against Florida on the road and on national TV.

OFF TO A FAST START After taking care of business at home, sweeping Georgia and Auburn in straight sets, and knocking off South Carolina and Florida on the road, the Tennessee Lady Vols are off to their best conference start since 2004. Seven years ago, the 2004 squad registered 32 overall wins and only lost once during its SEC slate. Overall at11-2, the Orange and White are also off to their best start since 2006, when that team won 13 of its first 15 matches.

Sophomore Kelsey Robinson has been tremendous through 13 matches, producing eight performances of at least 20 kills so far this season. In seven of those matches, she has also recorded a double-double. (The list of 20 kills & doubles doubles is in the box on the right.) No Lady Vol had as many 20-kill matches in all of 2010. All-American Nikki Fowler reached the mark four times last year to lead the team. Meanwhile, Robinson has already surpassed her double-double total from last season, when she had five matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs. Perhaps not suprisingly, she is a national leader offensively. She leads the conference and ranks sixth in kills per set (4.77). She also ranks fourth in Division I in points per set (5.58).

She has earned MVP honors at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Virginia Tech Invite, along with being named to the all-tournament team at the Illinois State Farm Classic. A FRESHMAN FIRST Mary Pollmiller was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 12 following her outstanding setting performance in Blacksburg, Va. She is one of just two freshmen currently in the SEC top 10 in assists per set, joining LSU’s Malorie Pardo. Pollmiller ranks second in the conference in assists, averaging 11.67 assists per set, trailing only Pardo, who averages 11.88.

GOOD TO BE HOME After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its fourth year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River. Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 41-7 in home matches, including a perfect 5-0 this season. SEASON ATTENDANCE FIGURES With an average home attendance of 983 in 2010, the Lady Vols demolished the previous school record of 772 set the year before. UT also finished with a program record for total home attendance with 13,761 fans. Through five matches this year, Tennessee is almost two-thirds of the way to match its 2008 total. NEW COURT To the casual observer, the Lady Vols’ court looks very much the same as always with the checkerboard orange and white beyond each baseline, but the playing surface is brand new. The court was assembled for the first time in Thompson-Boling Arena last week and is slightly elevated off the ground, which makes for more spring on the court. The Lady Vols’ new practice court is also designed this way.
