OPPONENTS AT A QUICK GLANCE

After making quick work of Louisville on the road Wednesday, sweeping the Cardinals in straight sets, the No. 16 Lady Vol volleyball team returns home to host Mississippi State on Sunday afternoon. Tennessee has now won six-straight matches, including a victory over 13th-ranked Florida in four sets last Friday. Last year, Tennessee won all but two home SEC matches in the friendly confines of Thompson-Boling Arena.

The midweek showdown with Louisville marks the eighth consecutive year that the Lady Vols and Cardinals have meet in a non-conference match. Mississippi State enters the match with an overall record of 10-13 and 5-9 against the SEC. Prior to its trip to Knoxville on Sunday, State travels to Lexington, Ky., to square off against the Wildcats on Friday evening.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT The No. 16 University of Tennessee Lady Vol volleyball team notched a pair of home victories this past weekend over then No. 13 Florida and South Carolina to improve to 20-3 overall and 13-1 in conference play. Against Florida, the Big Orange defense was tremendous, limiting the Gator offense, which leads the conference and nation in hitting percentage, to just .160, while winning the match in four sets. Versus South Carolina, the Lady Vols hit a season-best .446 to make quick work of the Gamecocks, sweeping USC in three. UT hit .175 to Florida’s .160, which marked the first time the Gator’s have been outhit all year. Tiffany Baker was outstanding in both matches, as she registered double-doubles in each match. Against UF, she blasted 13 kills to go along with 11 digs, while in the USC match, the Carrolton, Texas, native tallied 15 kills and dug up 12. Four Lady Vols hit over .400 in the South Carolina match, as in addition to Baker, sophomore Kelsey Robinson notched double-double number 17 on the year with 13 kills and 10 digs. Junior Leslie Cikra hit a match-high and career-best .636 and totaled eight kills, while fellow junior DeeDee Harrison slammed seven kills and hit .417.

THE SEC (HISTORICALLY SPEAKING) Tennessee has won at least 15 SEC matches each of the last three seasons leading up to 2011, finishing with 15 in 2008 and 2010 and 16 in 2009. Rob Patrick is 157-91 in his career in the SEC. In 13 of his 15 seasons, he led the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record against the conference. In 2004, Tennessee stormed through the league with a 15-1 record, tying for first in the SEC and winning the SEC Tournament a week later.

PATRICK’S MILESTONE WINS

ROB PATRICK /// HEAD COACH Two-time National Coach of the Year Rob Patrick has developed a tradition of excellence since coming to Tennessee 15 years ago. Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation’s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven years, including a run to the Final Four in 2005. His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from 1998-2006 marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from 1978-84. The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in seven of the last nine campaigns. Prior

to Patrick’s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in 1988. Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including title-game victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively. During that stint, Stanford never lost a home match en route to participating in the 1995 NCAA Final Four and winning three consecutive Pac-10 titles.

In July, former Iona College head coach Alan Edwards joined the UT staff as the team’s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. “I am very excited about adding Alan to our coaching staff,” Patrick said. “He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, both as a head coach and assistant coach from a number of Division-I programs, and is someone who I feel will be able to assimilate himself into our team very quickly.” Edwards was most recently the head coach at Iona for the past five seasons, where he led the Gaels to a 75-79 overall record and four appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. During his time in New Rochelle, Edwards mentored one of the top defensive players in NCAA history in Allison Neiters. One of the top volleyball performers in Iona College and MAAC history, she shattered the Iona and conference career record for digs with 2,682, the fifth highest all-time total in the NCAA. Neiters was named the 2007 and 2008 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and 2009 MAAC Libero of the Year, as well as the league’s Defensive Player of the Week 17 times during her career. She was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Honor Roll member, two-time CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict selection and earned Iona’s Academic Merit Award for holding a 3.50 or above grade point average.

After a standout career at Mississippi State as a player and coaching the past three seasons as an assistant at ETSU, Rachel Cooper joined the Tenneessee staff in May. Prior to her time as an assistant coach at ETSU, Cooper served as a graduate assistant with the Buccaneers, where she assisted in recruiting and coordinated team travel and community service. “The thing that most impresses me about Rachel is her work ethic,” Patrick said. “I’ve gotten to know her in recent years when she has come to work our camps and I am very excited that we have been able to add her to our coaching staff. She has experience in recruiting and understands the day-to-day responsibilities involved with running a high-level volleyball program. “Rachel was also an outstanding player in the SEC and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in our conference. Her personality is very engaging and inviting, and I expect that our players will be able to easily relate to her.” A Roscoe, Ill., native, Cooper was a four-year letter winner and starting outside hitter for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. A two-year captain and team Most Valuable Player, Cooper was also the first Bulldog athlete ever named SEC Player of the Week. She finished her career third all-time in kills with 1,405.

WHO’S BACK? Tennessee is returning three starters and a libero from last year’s roster: juniors DeeDee Harrison and Leslie Cikra, sophomore Kelsey Robinson and sophomore libero Ellen Mullins. Robinson was a SEC All-Freshman Team selection in her first season with the Lady Vols at outside hitter. Additional returners include sophomore setter Kylann Scheidt, senior setter Kelsey Mahoney and sophomore outside hitter Carly Sahagian.

WHO’S NEW? For one, most of the coaching staff is new. Patrick added two new assistants in the offseason: Alan Edwards, who was head coach at Iona; and Rachel Cooper, who was as an assistant at East Tennessee State. On the court, the Lady Vols feature plenty of new faces with the eighth-ranked recruiting class in the country. JETER OUT FOR SEASON Senior leader Kayla Jeter will miss the entire 2011 season with a knee injury, associate athletics director for sports medicine Jenny Moshak reported. Jeter suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee at team practice Aug. 19. Recovery time is estimated between six and nine months.

Jeter enjoyed her best season as a junior in 2010, earning first-team All-SEC and AVCA All-America honorable mention honors. The Solon, Ohio, native ranked second on the squad with 340 kills (2.98/set) and led UT with 19 solo blocks.

SEC COACHES’ SURVEY SAYS The Southeastern Conference coaches selected Tennessee to finish second in the Eastern Division, and they picked up two votes to win the SEC regularseason title. LADY VOLS IN THE RANKINGS Coming off two home wins this past weekend over No. 13 Florida and South Carolina, UT climbed four spots to No. 16 in the most recent AVCA coaching poll after receiving 578 points. The squad returned to the top 25 on Sept. 26, as it was ranked 23rd following wins over South Carolina and No. 6 Florida on the road. Despite going 3-0 to start the season, the Big Orange dropped out of the poll after week one.

PAST & PRESENT NOW WE’RE ROLLING Coming off a heartbreaking loss at No. 25 Kentucky in a five-set thriller on Oct. 12, the Wildcats ended the Lady Vols 11-match winning streak. However, since that match, the Lady Vols have won five-straight matches, and are in sole possesion of first place in the SDEC standings. The UK loss ended UT’s streak of 11 straight SEC wins, which dated back to last season. This season, the 8-0 start by the Big Orange in league play tied for the best conference start in UT history.

SHE CAN DIG IT! Sophomore libero Ellen Mullins continues to be a force in the back row for the Lady Vols. Against UK, she dug a career-high 31 balls, which is the most in an SEC match this season. On the season, she ranks fifth in the conference with an average of 3.84digs per set. Mullins bettered her previous career high by 11, as she notched 20 digs against Dayton on Sept. 3. Her 31 digs is the third most digs by an SEC player this year, and just the 4th time this year an SEC player has reached the 30 dig mark and the 10th most by a Lady Vol in program history.

MR. 300 With a sweep over Georgia in the Southeastern Conference opener on Sept. 16, Tennessee Lady Vol head coach Rob Patrick recorded his 300th career win, all of which have come at UT. Patrick now has the highest winning percentage of any UT volleybal coach (.671), along with the most victories (312).

THE ORIGINAL ORANGE PANTS When UT head football coach Derek Dooley headed out of the Neyland Stadium tunnel in orange pants for the season-opener against Montana, he created a buzz around Knoxville, and even nationally. However, what some may not know is that Lady Vol head volleyball coach Rob Patrick had already donned the orange pants a year ago against Kentucky on Sept. 30, 2010. The match was televised on ESPNU . The Lady Vols swept the Wildcats in that match and Patrick’s orange pants record now stands at 2-1.

CAN’T MISS TELEVISION Tennessee games have aired 8 times on an ESPN network over the years and the Lady Vols are 5-3 in those matches. Overall, the team has won 12 of their last 15 televised matches. The Lady Vols are slated to appear on television at least one more time this season, when the team hosts LSU on Nov. 20 in a match that will be broadcasted by CSS.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS  LOUISVILLE Coming off its first conference loss versus Pittburgh on Oct. 23, the Cardinals (17-6, 8-1) bounced back to defeat South Florida on the road this past Friday. Versus USF, the Cardinals hit .402 as a team and outdug the Bulls 40-33. U of L notched six aces, led by Emily Juhl’s two, while Caitlin Welch had a match-high 17 digs. Juhl was caused problems for the Bulls defense, as she posted 10 kills and record a .500 hitting percentage. Against Pitt, U of L went on a 9-3 down the stretch in the opening frame to earn a 25-21 set win. It was all for not however, as the Panthers won the ensuing three sets to snap the Cards’ eight match unbeaten streak in BIG EAST action. Lola Arslanbekova paces the U of L offense, as she averages a team-best 5.00 kills per set. Her 410 kills is more than double any other member of the team.

 MISSISSIPPI STATE Eager to shake a season-long five match losing skid, Mississippi State begins its six-match November schedule this weekend when the Bulldogs (10-13/5-8 SEC) hit the road for matchups with the league’s top two teams, front-running Tennessee (20-3/13-1 SEC) and Kentucky (21-4/12-2 SEC). Friday’s match at UK begins a four-match road run for the Bulldogs. State dropped a pair of home matches to the SEC West’s top two teams last weekend, bowing in straight-sets to Arkansas before dropping a closely-contested five-set battle with defending SEC West champion LSU. Senior Caitlin Rance totaled 32 kills with 13 digs and five blocks last weekend, raising her teamleading season kills total to 364, second-most in the SEC, and climbing to eighth among MSU’s career kills leaders with 1,059. Rance logged her 25th career doubledouble in Sunday’s regionally-televised (CSS) match against LSU. Junior rightside hitter Faith Steinwedell paced MSU at the net last week with eight blocks, while freshman middle Lainey Wyman tallied seven rejections, raising her team-leading total to 86. She leads all SEC freshmen in both kills (206) and blocks (86) and is eight blocks away from the MSU record for rookie season blocks.

WE DON’T MESS AROUND By notching their 20th win in just the 23rd match of the year versus South Carolina on Sunday, the Lady Vols have made it to the 20 win milestone in the third fastest amount of time in Tennessee history. The 1973 team won their first 20 in a row, while the 2004 squad reached 20 wins in 22 matches.

HOME SWEET HOME The Lady Vols have had a lot of success this season, no matter what town or venue they are playing in. However, the Lady Vols have protected their home court, as the team is a perfect 9-0 in matches played in Thompson-Boling Arena this year. Since the start of SEC play, UT has only dropped three sets in the friendly confines of TBA.

ABOVE .500 AGAIN By winning 13 of its first 14 conference matches this year, Tennessee is assured of having an SEC record of above .500. Head Coach Rob Patrick has now lead the Lady Vols to a .500 or better record in 13 of his 15 seasons at Rocky Top.

LAST SEASON VS. LOUISVILLE - 10/27/10 KNOXVILLE: Nikki Fowler was one of three Lady Volunteers to post a double-double versus Louisville, accomplishing the feat for the 50th time in her career, as the 22nd-ranked University of Tennessee volleyball team snapped Louisville’s eight-match winning streak in its final non-conference match of the 2010 regular season, 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 28-26, at TBA. Fowler’s milestone double-double consisted of a team-best 20 kills and 15 digs, while she hit at a stellar .341 clip with just five errors in a squad-high 44 attacks. Joining Fowler in the double-double parade were Kelsey Robinson and Kylann Scheidt. Back at her normal outside hitter position, Robinson tied her career high with 11 kills and added a team-high 17 digs for her third double-double, while Scheidt did so for the first time in her young career with 29 assists and a personal-best 16 digs. Leah Hinkey and Leslie Cikra notched double-digit kill totals as well, to give the Big Orange four players with 10 or more kills in a single match for the second time last season. Also for UT, Kayla Jeter and DeeDee Harrison who tallied eight and six kills, respectively.

LAST SEASON VS. MISS. STATE - 10/15/10 KNOXVILLE: The No. 24 University of Tennessee volleyball team used a balanced and efficient offensive attack as well as a stifling defensive effort to sweep past Mississippi State, 25-16, 25-17, 25-18. Nikki Fowler served as the off ensive catalyst for the Big Orange, blasting out a match-high 13 kills while hitting at a torrid .478 clip. Kayla Jeter and Dee Harrison each added nine kills. - 11/7/10 STARKVILLE: The 22nd-ranked University of Tennessee volleyball matched its longest winning streak of the season with its sixth consecutive victory by making quick work of Mississippi State, 2517, 25-18, 25-15. Kayla Jeter led the way with a match-high 11 kills, in addition to tallying four blocks, three digs and an ace. DeeDee Harrison pounded out 10 putaways on just 13 swings for a stellar .615 attack average.

AN OPPONENTS NIGHTMARE Sophomore Kelsey Robinson has been tremendous through 23 matches, producing 10 performances of at least 20 kills so far this season. In nine of those matches, she has also recorded a double-double. (The list of double-doubles is in the box on the right.) No Lady Vol had as many 20-kill matches in all of 2010. All-American Nikki Fowler reached the mark four times last year to lead the team. Meanwhile, Robinson has already surpassed her double-double total from last season, when she had five matches with at least 10 kills and 10 digs. Perhaps not suprisingly, she is a national leader offensively. She leads the conference and ranks 18th nationally in kills per set (4.42). She also ranks 10th in Division I in points per set (5.14).

NIFTY 50 Freshman Mary Pollmiller’s first year in Orange and White is off to a fantastic start. Because of injuries at the setter position, she has played all but a handful of points. Her average of 11.68 assists per set is the second-best in the SEC and also ranks 11th nationally. She has 11 matches of at least 50 assists this season, the last one coming in a 3-1 Lady Vol victory over Georgia. This season she has also produced five double-doubles, registering 50 or more assists in three of those performances.

THE SEC IS TAKING NOTE On Monday, the Southeastern Conference handed out an award to the sixth different Lady Vol this season, as freshman Tiffany Baker was tabbed the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. By having six different student-athletes be recognized, it is the most in UT history and ties for the most in SEC history (UF also had six players earn honors in 2007). Baker was not the only Lady Vol to get an award, as classmate Mary Pollmiller earned Freshman of the Week honors. Baker had double-doubles in each match and increased her season averages in almost every statistical category. Pollmiller had 41 assists in a sweep of South Carolina, aiding UT to a season-high .446 hitting percentage versus the Gamecocks.

NATIONALLY KNOWN Kelsey Robinson has been an offensive force through 15 matches this season. Her play has caught the attention of both the Southeastern Conference and on the national level. On Oct. 10 she was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while a day later she grabbed Sports Imports/AVCA Division I National Player of the Week Honors for her efforts against Alabama and Ole Miss. Robinson notched double-doubles in both matches versus the Rebels and Crimson Tide and now leads the SEC with 14 double-doubles. Versus the Rebels, Robinson recorded her second 20-20 game of the season, as she blasted 20 kills and had 20 digs. In a three-set sweep of Alabama on Friday, she registered 15 kills, 13 digs and three assists. She also received the SEC Offensive POW accolde on Sept. 5 after her performance at the Illinois State Farm Classic. She has also earned MVP honors at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and Virginia Tech Invite, along with being named to the all-tournament team at the Illinois State Farm Classic.

MULLINS’ FIRST HONOR After setting a career-high in digs and being a consistent presence in the Lady Vol back row, the Southeastern Conference announced that Tennessee sophomore libero Ellen Mullins has been named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 24. It was the first time the Nashville native has been recognized by the SEC, as she averaged a team-best 5.75 digs per set this weekend on the road against Kentucky and Mississippi State. Against UK, the Nashville, native set a career-high in digs with 31, which ranks second all time in UT history during the 25-point rally scoring era, and is the most digs by any SEC player in a conference match this season.

TO NOTE... For the second time in less than a month, Mary Pollmiller was tabbed the SEC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 3 for her efforts at LSU and Arkansas. Against the Tigers and Razorbacks, Pollmiller had a hand in 80 percent of the kills, tallying 92 of Tennessee’s 102 assists and added five kills of her own. She first earned SEC Freshman of the Week on Sept. 12 following her outstanding setting performance in Blacksburg, Va. She is one of just two freshmen currently in the SEC top 10 in assists per set, as she leads the league in assists, averaging 11.72 assists per set.

24 NO MORE! The number 24 may be just a number to some, but for the Tennesseee Lady Vol volleyball team, it is a significant number in both matches versus Florida this season. Most recently, in a 3-1 win over UF at home, the Big Orange snapped Florida’s streak of winning 24 consecutive sets. The Gators had not dropped a set prior to UT traveling to Gainesville earlier this season and beating UF in five. By downing the No. 6 Gators on Sept. 25, Tennessee broke Florida’s streak of 24 straight SEC wins, which dated back to their last conference loss in 2009 — which was also against Tennessee. It’s been seven years since the Lady Vols defeated Florida on its home court, as the 2004 squad topped Florida in the regular season finale, then returned a week later to win again in Gainesville to capture the SEC Tournament crown.

FLORIDA DOESN’T LOSE AT HOME Florida’s loss to Tennessee was just its 21st defeat at home since Head Coach Mary Wise took over the team in 1991, and just the 52nd loss at home in program history. By being unofficially ranked No. 26 on Sunday, Tennessee is just the second unranked team to defeat Florida in Gainesville since 1991, and the first in 17 years. Now with 3 victories in Gainesville, no other team has more wins over the Gators at home under Coach Wise than the Lady Vols. GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM The Lady Vols volleyball squad was one of just four teams at Tennessee to earn a perfect 100% on the latest graduation success rate report that was released on Oct. 25.

LADY VOL DUO GETS REWARDED For the first time since Oct. 20, 2008, a pair of Lady Vols in junior DeeDee Harrison and sophomore Carly Sahagian were bestowed conference honors. On Sept. 26. Carly Sahagian was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, while Harrison earned the conference’s Defensive Player of the Week. Sahagian was terrific against South Carolina and Florida, tallying 31 kills, 26 digs, three blocks and two services aces. She recorded double-doubles in both of those matches, and blasted a career-high 19 kills at UF. Against USC and UF, Harrison was a standout allaround performer. She blocked a total of 12 attacks, with an average of 1.33 blocks per set and set careerhighs in blocks assists and total blocks against the Gamecocks. Offensively, she notched double-digits in kills in both matches.

WE’RE SWAMP PEOPLE When it comes to the standard in the SEC, it has been set by the Florida Gators. However, as of late, Tennessee has caused problems. - Since Nov. 20, 2009, Florida is 31-3 in SEC matches. All three losses are to Tennessee. - In that same time frame, the Gators have lost 10 sets to the Lady Vols, compared to only 10 sets to the other nine SEC teams combined.

The Lady Vols finished off the first half of their SEC double round-robin schedule in first place with a 9-1 mark, which is their best record at the half way point since the conference went to the format in 2006. The next best start came in 2009, as that team went 8-2 in its first 10 against conference opponents. The team went 7-3 last season and in 2006.

DOMINATING ‘D’ The Tennessee defense was terrific against Mississippi State last on Oct. 16, as the team held the Bulldogs to a .025 team hitting percentage. In the match, the highest MSU hit in any set was at .056, which came in the second frame. MSU hitting percentage of .025 is the 12th lowest average the Big Orange has held a team to since 2001.

RECORD WATCH Through just 24 matches this season of the 2011 season, two Tennnessee records during the 25-point rally scoring era, which dates back to 2008, have been broken. Freshman Mary Pollmiller shattered the total assists record, as the Littleton, Colo., native currently has 1,093 assists on the year. Current Lady Vol Kelsey Mahoney previously held the record, as she tallied 842 helpers in 2009. Outside hitter Kelsey Robinson is not only dominate in registering kills, but the sophomore is a weapon at the service line. On the season, Robinson has 37 service aces, which is a Lady Vol best. In digs, sophomore Ellen Mullins has dug up 359 balls this season, which ranks sixth. Junior DeeDee Harrison is the team leader in blocks, as she has 96 putbacks on the year, which ranks eighth.

TOP 25 VOLLEYBALL CROWDS The Lady Vols had nine of their top 25 highest crowds during the 2010 season, including a seasonhigh 1,431 against Florida on Sept. 19. Twenty-two of Tennessee’s top 25 highest crowds have come in the four years since Thompson-Boling Arena became the team’s primary venue.

After spending 10 seasons in Stokely Athletics Center, the Lady Vol volleyball team is in its fourth year playing in Thompson-Boling Arena on the banks of the Tennessee River. Since beginning to play in the facility full-time in 2008, the Lady Vols are 43-7 in home matches, including a perfect 7-0 this season.  Record at Thompson-Boling Since 2008

With an average home attendance of 983 in 2010, the Lady Vols demolished the previous school record of 772 set the year before. UT also finished with a program record for total home attendance with 13,761 fans. Through nine matches this year, Tennessee is on pace to shatter its 2008 overall total and average. Three of the four top crowds in UT history have been in this season.

NEW COURT To the casual observer, the Lady Vols’ court looks very much the same as always with the checkerboard orange and white beyond each baseline, but the playing surface is brand new. The court was assembled for the first time in Thompson-Boling Arena last week and is slightly elevated off the ground, which makes for more spring on the court. The Lady Vols’ new practice court is also designed this way.

RECORD SETTER For their Friday-night match against No. 13 Florida on Oct. 28, an announced crowd 2,012 fans were in attendance to see UT win in four sets, marking the second-highest attendance in program history. The record crowd of 3,311 against Georgia in 2005 happened right before a basketball game.
