• UT has won 10 of its last 11 SEC openers and is 5-0 in such games during the Pearl era. • SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Nov. 18 that he was suspending UT head coach Bruce Pearl for the first eight games of SEC play this season. It is, in effect, an eight-day suspension, as Pearl is prohibited from participating in any team activities during the days of those eight contests. • During his 587 previous games as a collegiate head coach, Bruce Pearl has never missed a game for any reason (funeral, child’s birth, illness, etc.). • Sixth-year associate head coach Tony Jones is serving as head coach during Pearl’s suspension. • Fifth-year assistant coach Steve Forbes graduated from Southern Arkansas in 1988. He played baseball for the Muleriders and spent one year as the SID at his alma mater before moving on to coaching. • Wednesday’s 104-84 thrashing of No. 21 Memphis marked the first time in the “bragging rights” series that either team had scored 100 points. It was also the most points allowed by the Tigers in a regulation game since the 1987-88 season (112-104 loss to Virginia Tech on March 5, 1988). In the last 24 seasons, Memphis has surrendered 100 points only nine times. • After posting a perfect 6-0 record during the month of November, the Vols stumbled to a 3-4 mark in December. Under Pearl, Tennessee is 26-15 during the month of January. • Junior shooting guard Scotty Hopson needs just nine points to become the 43rd all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club. He has scored at least nine points in 12 of 14 games this season. • The Vols already have defeated three ranked opponents this season, toppling No. 7 Villanova in New York City on Nov. 26, No. 3 Pitt in Pittsburgh on Dec. 11 and No. 21 Memphis in Knoxville on Jan. 5. All three contests were won in convincing fashion, as Tennessee led for a total of 74:30 in the three games combined (trailed for only 5:30 of game time). • The Vols won the 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off Championship in November at Madison Square Garden.
