• SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Nov. 18 that he was suspending UT head coach Bruce Pearl for the first eight games of SEC play this season. It is, in effect, an eight-day suspension, as Pearl is prohibited from participating in any team activities during the days of those eight contests. • Sixth-year associate head coach Tony Jones is serving as head coach during Pearl’s suspension. • For NCAA official records purposes, UT’s results during the suspension will be credited to Pearl. • While Vanderbilt will be Tony Jones’ focus Saturday, he shares collegiate ties to another institution in Nashville, as he lettered in basketball at Fisk University. An NAIA school, Fisk boasts several noteworthy alums, including NAACP co-founder W.E.B. Du Bois and poet Nikki Giovanni. • It’s the question on everyone’s mind: Will Tony Jones wear the orange blazer Saturday? For the full story on the history behind the orange blazer, see Page 2. • This is the fourth straight season Tennessee has taken part in a regular-season ESPN College GameDay matchup. That’s the longest active streak in the nation. The Vols are 2-1 in GameDay games. • Tennessee coordinator of video scouting Houston Fancher worked as an assistant coach under Jan van Breda Kolff at Vanderbilt during the 1995-96 season. That staff also included former Vandy and NBA standout Charles Davis and eventual Tennessee head coach Buzz Peterson (2001-05). • One of the top freshmen in the country, forward Tobias Harris has five double-doubles this season, including three straight and four in UT’s last five games. • The Vols already have defeated three ranked opponents this season, toppling No. 7 Villanova in New York City on Nov. 26, No. 3 Pitt in Pittsburgh on Dec. 11 and No. 21 Memphis in Knoxville on Jan. 5. All three contests were won in convincing fashion, as Tennessee led for a total of 114:30 in the three games combined (trailed for only 5:30 of game time). • The Vols won the 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off Championship in November at Madison Square Garden.
