Goins Returns, Plays Career-High 24 Minutes Senior point guard Melvin Goins was forced to leave the Vols’ win over Belmont last Tuesday in the second half after suffering a left side contusion ... Goins did not dress for UT’s game against Missouri State the following day ... But after taking a few days off and spending a lot of quality time with Vols athletic trainer Chad Newman, Goins was able not only to start in Wednesday’s win over VCU, but he also played a career-high 24 minutes ... The San Diego, Calif., native tallied eight points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals vs. the Rams.

Vols Ranked In 22 Straight AP Polls Tennessee has been ranked in 22 consecutive AP polls dating back the 2009-10 preseason poll ... It’s the second longest streak of its kind during the Bruce Pearl era, trailing a period of 32 straight poll appearances from 2007-09 ... Last season, only nine teams—Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Purdue, West Virginia, Michigan State, Villanova, Georgetown and Tennessee—went the entire season without failing to appear in the AP top 25. Impressive Debut For Harris True freshman Tobias Harris dropped a seemingly effortless 18 points on Chattanooga during his collegiate debut Nov. 12 at Thompson-Boling Arena ... Harris led the Vols in scoring, minutes (26) and field goals made (7) while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and draining his only 3-point attempt during Tennessee’s 20-point win ... Harris also added five rebounds and an assist to his stellar performance ... His 18-point Tennessee debut surpassed that of any current Vol, any Vol during the Pearl era and even former UT All-Americas Allan Houston (17) and Ron Slay (17).

NIT Season Tip-Off Using “Experimental Arc” In some men’s multi-team events, such as the NIT Season Tip-Off, a “restricted area” arc located two feet from the center of the basket will be placed in the lane ... This “experimental rule” is an extension of last year’s rules change that made it illegal for a secondary defender to take a charge underneath the basket ... By placing the arc on the court, officials, players and coaches will have a visual aid to determine the proper positioning by a defender to draw a charge ... If a player’s foot is touching or inside the arc, officials have been instructed not to call a charge. Associated Press Poll

VOLUNTEERS BASKETBALL

Can UT Bench Run Deep Once Again? Last season, Tennessee’s bench outscored the opponents’ bench by 10 points per game (22.7 to 12.7) ... UT’s non-starters scored in double digits 35 times last year, and nine different Vols averaged at least 13.0 minutes played per game ... UT is averaging 20.5 points from its bench this season. Lots Of Length This Year With an average height of 6-5, this year’s Tennessee roster boasts great length once again ... A total of 10 players—or 64.8 percent of the team—is 6-5 or taller ... Only point guard Melvin Goins, at 5-11, is less than 6-feet-tall ... Impressively, five Vols are 6-8 or taller, with center Brian Williams checking in at a team-high 6-10. Hopson On Verge Of Joining Elite Club Junior guard Scotty Hopson is 177 points shy of becoming the 43rd member of Tennessee’s 1,000point club. Two Coaching Milestones Loom For Pearl Head coach Bruce Pearl, in his 19th collegiate season, needs only three wins to reach 450 for his career ... Pearl could potentially log his 150th win at Tennessee as well this season, as he is 20 wins from that milestone ... Pearl has averaged 25.2 wins per season in his five full years on Rocky Top. Tennessee Approaching 1,500th All-Time Win With 1,475 wins to the program’s credit, Tennessee needs just 25 wins to reach 1,500 all-time victories, dating to the inaugural 1908-09 season. Tough Break For Bone Senior guard Josh Bone sustained a fractured left wrist during the Vols’ exhibition win over Brevard Nov. 3 ... Dr. Robert Ivy, of Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic, said Bone is expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks ... As a junior walk-on last season, the Nashville, Tenn., native played an important role in several Tennessee victories, most notably wins over Ole Miss and Ohio in the NCAA Tournament ... He was placed on scholarship by head coach Bruce Pearl this past summer. Pearl Predicts Physicality, Bone Concurs Vols head coach Bruce Pearl has mentioned multiple times this preseason that this is his most physical team at Tennessee ... According to senior guard Josh Bone: “We put a big emphasis on being more physical this year. Defense will be a big key to how far we go. Judging by our early workouts, we’re going to apply a lot of ball pressure on every position on the floor. It’s not going to be easy for our opponents. I know I wouldn’t want to be on the other team having to play against us this year.” Strong National Television Presence Tennessee will play 19 nationally televised games this regular season (CBS, ESPN, ESPNU or ESPN2).

Vols Sign Pair Of ESPNU Super 60 Guards On Nov. 10, Tennessee signed a pair of guards ranked in the ESPNU Super 60 ... Shooting guard Kevin Ware (Conyers, Ga.) and point guard Chris Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) ... Both signees plan to enroll at UT next summer ... “We got two great guards who are both great-character kids,” Bruce Pearl said. “They stuck with their family, and I won’t forget that.” ... A 5-foot-10, 165-pound point guard, Jones led Memphis Melrose High School to the state championship in 2010 before transferring to Oak Ridge (N.C.) Military Academy ... A 6-foot-4, 170-pound shooting guard, Ware is a senior at Rockdale County High School, which entered this season ranked second in the state of Georgia ... UT’s current roster already includes four other Georgia natives in junior guard Cameron Tatum (Lithonia), sophomore forward Kenny Hall (Stone Mountain) and freshmen guards Trae Golden (Powder Springs) and Jordan McRae (Midway).

ESPN’s College GameDay Returns For Historic Men’s/Women’s Doubleheader UT’s meteoric rise in prominence under coach Bruce Pearl continues this season, as ESPN announced in August that the Volunteers will be featured in one of its popular College GameDay Driven by State Farm® matchups for the fourth straight season ... This season’s GameDay broadcast will precede the franchise’s first-ever same-school doubleheader ... The Vols host the Commodores Jan. 15 at noon ET, and then the Lady Vols, led by coaching icon Pat Summitt, will play the Vanderbilt women at 8 p.m. ET ... This marks the second time in three years that College GameDay will broadcast live from Thompson-Boling Arena ... And with North Carolina and UCLA not taking part in GameDay matchups this season, Tennessee now owns the nation’s longest active streak of GameDay appearances (four). UT Leads SEC In Wins Since 2005-06 Tennessee’s 57 SEC wins since the 2005-06 season are the most in the conference over that period ... The Vols are the only SEC squad to record double figure league wins in each of the last five years (regular season). School Tennessee Kentucky Florida Vanderbilt Miss. State

Noting the Volunteers Bench • Nine Vols average at least 13.5 minutes played per game. • In three games this season, at least nine Vols have scored. Full-Time Coaching Staff Intact For Fifth Straight Season Bruce Pearl’s full-time coaching staff, which includes associate head coach Tony Jones and assistants Steve Forbes and Jason Shay, is in its fifth season completely intact ... The group has never failed to lead the Vols to 20 wins or a berth in the NCAA Tournament ... Director of Basketball Operations Ken Johnson is in his sixth season on staff ... Mark Pancratz, who played for Pearl at UW-Milwaukee, is in his fifth season at UT and his second in the role of “assistant to the head coach” ... Former Appalachian State head coach Houston Fancher rounds out the Vols’ full-time staff as “coordinator of video scouting” ... Former Coastal Carolina letterman Logan Johnson joined the staff prior to this season as a graduate student manager. Vols Must Wait For Maymon’s Debut Sophomore forward Jeronne Maymon (pronounced: jur-ON MAY-min) transferred to UT from Marquette during the holiday break last season ... To fulfill the NCAA’s transfer residency requirements, the 6-7, 258-pound Maymon has to wait until Fall 2010 semester grades have been posted before he can take the court with the Vols ... A native of Madison, Wis., Maymon will add depth and toughness to the UT frontcourt. Fields Could Challenge School Blocks Records Senior forward John Fields, who enrolled at UT this summer after earning his degree from UNC Wilmington last spring (and is thus eligible immediately without having to sit out a year), could challenge Tennessee’s single-game and single-season blocked-shot records ... Fields, who played his first two collegiate seasons at East Carolina, ranks second on ECU’s career blocks list with 104 ... Last year at UNCW, he set a school record for blocks in a season with 59 ... The UT single-game record is six blocks (five times by four Vols), while C.J. Black holds the season record with 73 in 1997-98. Numerous Degrees Within Reach According to team academic counselor Kelly Brock, five current Vols are on pace to earn their degree by the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year ... Those players are Josh Bone, Melvin Goins, Michael Hubert, Steven Pearl and Brian Williams ... To date, every single Vol who has played four seasons under Bruce Pearl has left UT with his degree.

OUTLIVE: Round 3

The Tennessee basketball program’s OUTLIVE initiative has raised close to $255,000 for cancer research and prevention education since its inception during the 2008-09 season ... So far, OUTLIVE has helped the UT Medical Center Cancer Institute provide more than 23,000 cancer screenings throughout East Tennessee .... The highly successful OUTLIVE initiative was the idea of former graduate manager Brooks Savage (now a full-time hoops staffer at Tulane), who was inspired to action after witnessing the impact cancer had on the UT basketball team (Bruce Pearl’s mother is a cancer survivor; former Vol Chris Lofton quietly and courageously underwent treatment for testicular cancer during his senior season in 2007-08) ... Bruce and Brandy Pearl have a goal to help raise $1 million for the OUTLIVE program over five years, and the couple is hosting an “Evening In Orange” fundraising event in April that is expected to raise more than $1 million in just that one night alone ... Much of those proceeds will go toward the expansion, renovation and construction of the facilities at the UTMC Cancer Institute ... Tennessee throttled Florida 79-63 in the inaugural OUTLIVE game in January 2009 before shocking second-ranked Kentucky 74-65 in last season’s OUTLIVE contest in February ... This season’s OUTLIVE game is the Feb. 19 clash with Georgia.

Hamilton Named to Div. I-A Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee At the September meeting of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association, Tennessee athletics director Mike Hamilton was named to the Executive Committee of the organization ... The Executive Committee consists of industry leaders among those who serve in the AD role at Division I-A schools, including a representative from each of the 11 Division I-A conferences ... Hamilton is serving as the representative from the SEC. Vols Taking The Court In New, State-Of-The-Art adidas Uniforms This Season Tennessee is one of 11 programs this season that is unveiling the lightest and most technologically advanced college basketball uniforms ever ... Designed and developed by adidas, the uniforms are 30 percent lighter and dry twice as fast as previous uniforms to help enhance the Vols’ performance by keeping players cooler, drier and more comfortable on the court ... Made from 60 percent recycled materials, the uniforms feature adidas’ Formotion technology, which reduces seams, decreases friction between the garment and the player’s skin and optimizes the player’s natural movement through specially constructed material ... adidas reduced uniform weight and increased player comfort by switching front and back numbers from heavier, dense materials to a more breathable mesh ... The jersey moves heat and sweat away from the body through a combination of moisture management materials, ventilation channels and three dimensional garments, helping the uniform dry twice as quickly ... All 30 NBA teams also will wear Revolution 30 jerseys this season featuring similar adidas technology. Vols Part Of Loaded 2011 Maui Field The Vols will make their second appearance at the EA Sports Maui Invitational next season ... Along with the perennial tournament host school, Chaminade, the 2011 field includes Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee and UCLA ... Four newly-added Division I mainland tournament teams will be announced at a later date ... The Vols previously competed in the Maui Invitational in 2004, finishing fourth ... And as an assistant coach at Iowa, Bruce Pearl helped lead the Hawkeyes to the 1987 Maui title, with wins over Stanford, Kansas and Villanova. Tennessee Earns Fifth-Straight 20-Win Season Last season, Bruce Pearl’s Volunteers logged 20 wins for the fifth time in his five-year tenure on Rocky Top ... Tennessee now has 23 all-time 20-win seasons to date ... In 18 full seasons as a college head coach, Pearl has now led his team to at least 20 wins 17 times ... That’s darn good.

VOLUNTEERS BASKETBALL

Legends In The Rafters Four Tennessee basketball legends are memorialized with banners in the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters ... During a halftime ceremony on March 1, 2006, banners honoring longtime head coach Ray Mears (1962-77) and beloved radio “Voice of the Vols” John Ward (1964-99) were unveiled ... The UT men’s basketball program had never retired a jersey prior to the 2006-07 season, but after nearly 100 years of hardwood history, Bernard King (1975-77) was the first player to earn that distinguished honor ... King’s No. 53 jersey was officially retired during a halftime ceremony at the Feb. 13, 2007, home game against Kentucky (UT won 89-85) ... Then on March 2, 2008, Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) became the second UT player to receive the ultimate honor, when his No. 22 jersey was unveiled in the rafters during halftime of Tennessee’s 63-60 victory over Kentucky.

Tennessee Stands Alone Tennessee is the only Division I school ever to rank in the top five nationally in attendance for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball in the same year ... UT accomplished that feat for the seventh time in 2009-10.

Unbelievable Increase In Attendance Tennessee’s average home attendance has increased by 6,943 fans per game since Bruce Pearl’s arrival on Rocky Top ... Tennessee’s increase in attendance is higher than the average attendance of more than 200 Division I programs, including teams from the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac 10, C-USA, WAC, Mountain West and Missouri Valley conferences ... Tennessee ranked fifth nationally home attendance in Pearl’s first year at UT and has ranked fourth each year since.

Home Crowds of 20,000 Nothing New For Vols Tennessee has played in front of 41 home crowds of 20,000 or larger during the Bruce Pearl era ... The crowd of 22,326 for the 2009 Gonzaga game marked the largest at ThompsonBoling Arena since capacity was reduced from 24,535 to 21,678 prior to the 2007-08 season ... The Vols drew 20,613 fans for their season-opening win against Chattanooga Nov. 12.

Tennessee Fourth In The Nation In Attendance For Fourth Straight Year Tennessee finished last season ranked fourth nationally in average home attendance for the fourth consecutive year ... The Vols have finished in the top five nationally for five straight years ... Below is a look at 2009-10’s attendance leaders: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

School Games Kentucky 18 Syracuse 19 Louisville 19 Tennessee 16 North Carolina 19

The Volunteers At Thompson-Boling Arena Thompson-Boling Arena is hosting its 24th season in 2010-11 ... The Vols have won nearly 75 percent of their games in Thompson-Boling Arena and have ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance 11 times, including an active streak of five consecutive seasons in which UT has ranked in the top five. • Tennessee is 273-92 (.748) in 23 seasons in Thompson-Boling Arena. • Since the 1998 season, the Vols are 173-33 (.840) in Thompson-Boling Arena. • The Vols are 80-24 against SEC teams at home over the last 11 seasons. • Tennessee has won 27 of its last 31 SEC games at Thompson-Boling Arena. • UT has won 100 of its last 109 home games against non-conference opponents. • UT is 39-2 in home games against non-conference opponents under Bruce Pearl. • Tennessee finished both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with a 16-0 home record. • This is the third straight season in which Sporting News has tabbed Thompson-Boling Arena the “best homecourt advantage” in the Southeastern Conference.

Vols Riding Eight-Game Home Win Streak The Vols own a current eight-game home win streak ... After posting back-to-back 16-0 home records in 2006-07 and 2007-08, the Vols turned in an uncharacteristic 10-5 mark at Thompson-Boling Arena in 2008-09 before going 15-1 last year ... Now in his sixth season at UT, Bruce Pearl is 73-8 at ThompsonBoling Arena. Season-Ticket Sales Strong Again Tennessee has sold 14,800 season tickets thus far, with the only available season-ticket packages remaining located in the arena’s upper level, mostly above Row 10 ... Last year’s season-ticket sales topped out at 15,100 (the second consecutive year the Vols sold more than 15,000). Vols Enjoying World-Class Facilities The University of Tennessee invested more than $35 million into its basketball facilities between the end of the 2006-07 campaign and the start of 200708 ... During that eight-month period, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena ... The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million centerhung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities ... The renovations took Thompson-Boling’s capacity down from 24,535 to 21,678 ... The Vols’ new state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room ... Prior to last season, a pedestrian bridge was constructed leading from the G-10 parking garage to the arena, an elevator was added at the arena’s northwest end as a customer service amenity and new exterior signage was installed on the building’s facade ... The UT athletics department is now renovating the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena in, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs. Vols Among Nation’s “Most Valuable” Programs In the spring of 2010, the Tennessee men’s basketball program was included on Forbes.com’s list of the 20 “most valuable” college basketball programs in the country ... The figures showed UT hoops with a value of $14.1 million and a profit of $8.6 million in 2009-10.
