• The Volunteers won the 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off Championship last week at Madison Square Garden in New York City. After outstanding performances in wins over VCU and seventh-ranked Villanova, Tobias Harris was named to the All-Tournament Team and Scotty Hopson was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and also earned SEC Player of the Week honors. • Tennessee is just the second SEC team ever to win the prestigious NIT Season Tip-Off championship in “the world’s most famous arena.” Florida won the event in 1987. • Tennessee leads the SEC in 3-point field-goal defense (.268) and ranks second in field-goal percentage defense (.354) and rebounding (42.6). • Freshman Tobias Harris, from Dix Hills, N.Y., leads the Vols in minutes (27.4) and shares the team scoring lead with Scotty Hopson at 15.8 points per game . • Senior point guard Melvin Goins is tied for the the SEC lead in steals with 2.5 per game. • Vols head coach Bruce Pearl is just two wins away from career win No. 450. • After using stifling defense to reach the NCAA Elite Eight last season, the Vols are picking up where they left off. Tennessee is holding its opponents to 66.8 points per game and just .354 shooting from the field. The Vols have held four of five opponents to less than 36 percent shooting this year. • Raiders guard James Gallman, a sophomore from Knoxville’s Fulton High School, played in the Pilot Rocky Top League two summers ago and was a teammate of Renaldo Woolridge. • Tennessee’s coordinator of video scouting, Houston Fancher, is a 1988 graduate of Middle Tennessee (Physical education). • Tennessee is playing its 102nd season of varsity basketball and its sixth season under head coach Bruce Pearl. The Vols lost 49 percent of last year’s scoring, and 41 percent of the 2010-11 roster is new.
