• UT junior and Los Angeles native Renaldo Woolridge played his high school basketball at HarvardWestlake School, where he was teammates with Trojans Alex Stepheson and James Dunleavy. • Woolridge isn’t the only member of the Tennessee basketball family with ties to California or the Los Angeles area. Director of Basketball Operations Ken Johnson grew up in Los Angeles and attended Belmont High School. Senior Associate Athletics Director Desiree Reed-Francois is a 1994 graduate of UCLA, where she rowed. And freshman forward Kenny Hall grew up in the San Fernando Valley Area before relocating to Stone Mountain, Ga., for high school. • Tennessee is in the midst of a 13-day stretch in which it plays five games (1-2 thus far). • Under Bruce Pearl, the Volunteers are 40-3 at home against non-conference opponents. However, in its last game at Thompson-Boling Arena, UT dropped an 89-82 decision to Oakland (Dec. 14). • Senior point guard Melvin Goins is tied for the SEC lead in steals with 2.1 per game. • The Vols are shooting .463 from the field at home this season. Tobias Harris averages a team-best 17.2 points at Thompson-Boling Arena while shooting .556 from 3-point range. • The Vols already have defeated a pair of top-10 opponents this season, toppling No. 7 Villanova in New York City on Nov. 26 and No. 3 Pitt in Pittsburgh on Dec. 11. Both contests were won in convincing fashion, as Tennessee led for a total of 34:30 in the two games combined. • UT’s Dec. 11 victory over third-ranked Pitt in Pittsburgh was Bruce Pearl’s 450th career win as a head coach. Now in his sixth season on Rocky Top, Pearl owns a 133-48 (.735) record with the Vols. • The Volunteers won the 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off Championship last month at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Tennessee is just the second SEC team ever to win the prestigious NIT Season Tip-Off championship in the world’s most famous arena (Florida, 1987).
2010-11
VOLUNTEERS BASKETBALL
Tennessee Trends • In all nine of his seasons as a Division I head coach, Bruce Pearl’s teams have won at least 10 games in conference play. • Bruce Pearl is 24-16 vs. ranked teams at UT. • UT is 75-7 (.915) when scoring 80 or more points under the direction of Bruce Pearl. • UT is 58-5 (.921) during the Pearl era when it holds opponents to 40 percent shooting or worse. • Five of UT’s nine opponents this season have shot worse than 36 percent from the field, and the Vols’ field goal percentage defense stands at .379. • UT’s 13.7 offensive rebounds per game rank second in the SEC, trailing only South Carolina (14.8). • Melvin Goins ranks tied for first in the SEC in steals (2.0 spg), Scotty Hopson is sixth in the league in scoring (16.1 ppg), and Brian Williams is tied for sixth in rebounding (8.0 rpg). • Tobias Harris ranks eighth in the SEC in scoring (15.0 ppg); that’s fourth among league freshmen. Noting USC In their second season under veteran head coach Kevin O’Neill, the Trojans are off to a 6-5 start and are coming off a two-point loss at Kansas last weekend ... The Men of Troy have lost six straight road games, dating to last season ... Talented guard Jio Fontan transfered to USC from Fordham last January and made his Trojans debut at Kansas Saturday (started, scored 15 points) ... Sophomore forward Nikola Vucevic is averaging a double-double with 16.2 points and 10.4 rebounds ... Fontan and Vucevic are among five Trojans averaging at least 10.0 points per game ... The Trojans dismantled a top-25 Texas team 73-56 back on Dec. 5 ... Southern Cal is averaging 68.8 points per game while shooting .449 from the field and .354 from 3-point range.
The USC Series UT leads the all-time series with Southern California 4-2, dating to 1967 ... The Big Orange are 1-1 against the Trojans in Knoxville ... The last meeting in the series saw UT fall to the Trojans at USC’s Galen Center 77-55 last season on Dec. 19, 2009 ... The Vols are 16-7 all-time against current members of the Pacific 10 Conference, including an 0-1 mark during the Bruce Pearl era. Tennessee To Face Its Former Head Coach This home-and-home series took on some added intrigue on June 20, 2009, when USC athletic director Mike Garrett named Kevin O’Neill head coach of the Trojans basketball program ... O’Neill was the head coach at Tennessee from 1994-97, compiling a 36-47 (.434) record and leading UT to an NIT appearance in 1996. Pearl Has Some Pac 10 History When Bruce Pearl’s mentor, Dr. Tom Davis, took over the basketball program at Stanford in 1982, Pearl followed from his alma mater, Boston College, as an assistant coach ... At the age of 23, Pearl was promoted to associate head coach for the Cardinal ... Davis and Pearl ended a streak of 20 consecutive losing seasons in Palo Alto with a 19-win season in 1983-84 and also recruited four future NBA draft picks ... After four seasons at Stanford, Pearl followed Davis to Iowa in 1986. Woolridge Familiar With Stepheson, Dunleavy As a prep standout at Harvard-Westlake High School in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles, Vols junior Renaldo Woolridge was a teammate of USC players Alex Stepheson and James Dunleavy ... Woolridge has not played in Tennessee’s last three games, as he is recovering from a right ankle injury.

Last Clash With USC Tennessee traveled head-on into a West Coast buzzsaw last season on Dec. 19, 2009, falling at Southern California 77-55 in Los Angeles ... Three Trojans posted double-doubles, and point guard Mike Gerrity played tremendously in his USC debut ... A transfer, Gerrity was declared eligible the morning of the game, and he totaled 12 points (10 at the foul line), 10 assists and five rebounds in the Trojans’ upset win ... USC frontcourt players Alex Stepheson (19 points, 15 rebounds) and Nikola Vucevic (15 points, 10 rebounds) also starred in the win, playing 40 and 39 minutes, respectively ... Tennessee was out-rebounded 43-21 and totaled just five assists in the game ... The Vols did log nine steals (USC had only one) and forced 20 turnovers, but shot just 34.5 percent (20-of-58) ... UT was 2-of22 from 3-point range (.091) and 13-of-25 from the foul line (.520) ... Scotty Hopson led the Vols with 16 points, and backup point guard Melvin Goins added 10.

VOLUNTEERS BASKETBALL
Charlotte Recap Its not often that a team that holds its opponents to .302 shooting from the field ends up on the losing end of things, but that’s exactly what happened to Tennessee Friday, as the Vols suffered a 49-48 setback to Charlotte at Time Warner Cable Arena ... The game marked the first time under coach Bruce Pearl that the Vols lost to a team with a losing record; the 49ers improved to 5-6 with the win ... UT out-rebounded Charlotte 41-36 and outscored the 49ers 38-14 in the paint ... The Vols also had the advantage in second-chance points (17-9) and bench scoring (11-9) ... Freshman forward Tobias Harris had his first career double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds ... Scotty Hopson struggled shooting from the field (6-of-19) but scored a team-high 13 points ... Sophomore forward Jeronne Maymon made his UT debut and totaled six points, eight rebounds and one assist in 16 minutes off the bench ... Charlotte was led by guards Jamar Briscoe and Derrio Green, who scored 14 and 13 points, respectively. Up Next: Belmont Tennessee plays a rare same-season rematch when it hosts Belmont Dec. 23 (7:30 p.m. ET, SportSouth) for the second time this season ... The Vols lead the all-time series 3-0, dating to 2004 ... Tennessee never faced Belmont prior to the Pearl era (Belmont was an NAIA school until it became an NCAA Division I member in 1996) ... All previous meetings have taken place in Thompson-Boling Arena and were single-digit margins ... On Dec. 20, 2004, it was a one-possession game inside off two minutes before UT pulled away to post a 77-68 victory ... On Dec. 20, 2008, Bruins guard Alex Renfroe earned a trip to the foul line with three seconds on the clock and a chance to send the game to overtime, but he could not convert ... UT’s average margin of victory vs. Belmont is 6.6 points (80.3 ppg to 73.7 ppg).

Maymon Solid In UT Debut At Charlotte Sophomore forward Jeronne Maymon (pronounced: jur-ON MAY-min) transferred to UT from Marquette during the holiday break last season and made his Tennessee debut Friday at Charlotte ... In 16 minutes off the bench, Maymon recorded six points, eight rebounds and one assist ... To fulfill the NCAA’s transfer residency requirements, the 6-7, 258-pound Maymon had to wait until Fall 2010 semester grades have been posted and finalized before he could take the court with the Vols ... A native of Madison, Wis., Maymon adds depth and toughness to the UT frontcourt and will see most of his minutes at the No. 4 position. Hopson On Verge Of Joining Elite Club Junior guard Scotty Hopson is 93 points shy of becoming the 43rd member of Tennessee’s 1,000point club. Success On SportSouth The Vols are 10-0 all-time on SportSouth.

Tennessee No. 1 Per CollegeRPI.com Tennessee has an RPI of No. 1 nationally according to Jerry Palm’s CollegeRPI.com (updated Dec. 12) ... The “Ratings Percentage Index” is a formula used by the NCAA to aide in selecting teams and seedings for the NCAA Tournament ... RPI is made up of a team’s winning percentage (25%), its opponents’ winning percentage (50%), and the winning percentage of those opponents’ opponents (25%) ... UT’s average year-end RPI over the past five seasons is 12.4.
Pearl Predicted Physicality, Bone Concurred Bruce Pearl mentioned multiple times during the preseason that this is his most physical team at UT ... According to senior guard Josh Bone: “We put a big emphasis on being more physical this year. Defense will be a big key to how far we go. Judging by our early workouts, we’re going to apply a lot of ball pressure on every position on the floor. It’s not going to be easy for our opponents. I know I wouldn’t want to be on the other team having to play against us this year.”
November to Remember Tennessee posted a perfect 6-0 record in the month of November ... During the Pearl era, the Vols are 32-5 (.865) in November.
Impressive Debut For Harris True freshman Tobias Harris dropped a seemingly effortless 18 points on Chattanooga during his collegiate debut Nov. 12 at Thompson-Boling Arena ... Harris led the Vols in scoring, minutes (26) and field goals made (7) while shooting 7-of-11 from the floor and draining his only 3-point attempt during Tennessee’s 20-point win ... Harris also added five rebounds and an assist to his stellar performance ... His 18-point Tennessee debut surpassed that of any Vol during the Pearl era.
Vols Just Second SEC Team To Win NIT Tip-Off Tennessee is just the second team from the SEC ever to win the prestigious NIT Season Tip-Off tournament in New York City ... Florida won the event in 1987 before the Vols defeated Belmont, Missouri State, VCU and seventh-ranked Villanova to claim the 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off championship ... The title marks Bruce Pearl’s first tournament championship during his time at Tennessee. Harris, Hopson Bring Home NIT Hardware Junior guard Scotty Hopson was extraordinary in UT’s victories over VCU and seventh-ranked Villanova during November’s run to the NIT Season Tip-Off championship at Madison Square Garden ... Hopson averaged a team-high 18.0 points to go along with 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game en route to being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, as well as the SEC Player of the Week ... In his first collegiate appearance in his home state, freshman Tobias Harris (Dix Hills, N.Y.) averaged 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists while landing on the All-Tournament Team ... Hopson and Harris shot .462 and .417 from the field, respectively, in UT’s two wins at the Garden. Vols Ranked In 25 Straight AP Polls Tennessee has been ranked in 25 consecutive AP polls dating back the 2009-10 preseason poll ... It’s the second longest streak of its kind during the Bruce Pearl era, trailing a period of 32 straight poll appearances from 2007-09 ... Last season, only nine teams—Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Purdue, West Virginia, Michigan State, Villanova, Georgetown and Tennessee—went the entire season without failing to appear in the AP top 25. Tough Break For Bone Senior guard Josh Bone sustained a fractured left wrist during the Vols’ exhibition win over Brevard Nov. 3 ... Dr. Robert Ivy, of Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic, said Bone is expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks ... He had his cast removed Dec. 13 ... He played as a junior walk-on last season, and the Nashville, Tenn., native was placed on scholarship by head coach Bruce Pearl this past summer.
Can UT Bench Run Deep Once Again? UT is averaging 16.8 points from its bench this season, but the opponents’ bench has outscored the Vols’ bench five times in nine games ... Last season, Tennessee’s bench outscored the opponents’ bench by 10 points per game (22.7 to 12.7) ... UT’s non-starters scored in double digits 35 times last year, and nine different Vols averaged at least 13.0 minutes played per game ... For a breakdown of this year’s bench stats on a game-by-game basis, see the box on the top right of this page. Lots Of Length This Year With an average height of 6-5, this year’s Tennessee roster boasts great length once again ... A total of 10 players—or 64.8 percent of the team—is 6-5 or taller ... Only point guard Melvin Goins, at 5-11, is less than 6-feet-tall ... Five Vols are 6-8 or taller, with Brian Williams checking in at a team-high 6-10. Strong National Television Presence Tennessee will play 19 nationally televised games this regular season (CBS, ESPN, ESPNU or ESPN2). Hubert, Pearl Graduated in December; Numerous Degrees Within Reach Current UT seniors Michael Hubert and Steven Pearl graduated in December, and according to team academic counselor Kelly Brock, four other current Vols are on pace to earn their degree by the conclusion of the 2010-11 academic year ... Those players are Josh Bone, John Fields (Master’s), Melvin Goins and Brian Williams ... Former Vol Chris Lofton completed his degree requirements this past summer and will walk this spring, while current Chicago Bulls guard C.J. Watson will finish his requirements this summer ... To date, every single Vol who has played four seasons under Bruce Pearl has left UT with his degree.

Noting the Volunteers Bench • 10 Vols average at least 13.5 minutes played per game. • In six games this season, at least nine Vols have scored. Vols Sign Pair Of ESPNU Super 60 Guards On Nov. 10, Tennessee signed a pair of guards ranked in the ESPNU Super 60 ... Shooting guard Kevin Ware (Conyers, Ga.) and point guard Chris Jones (Memphis, Tenn.) ... Both signees plan to enroll at UT next summer ... “We got two great guards who are both great-character kids,” Bruce Pearl said. “They stuck with their family, and I won’t forget that.” ... A 5-foot-10, 165-pound point guard, Jones led Memphis Melrose High School to the state championship in 2010 before transferring to Oak Ridge (N.C.) Military Academy ... A 6-foot-4, 170-pound shooting guard, Ware is a senior at Rockdale County High School, which entered this season ranked second in the state of Georgia ... UT’s current roster already includes four other Georgia natives in junior guard Cameron Tatum (Lithonia), sophomore forward Kenny Hall (Stone Mountain) and freshmen guards Trae Golden (Powder Springs) and Jordan McRae (Midway). ESPN’s College GameDay Returns For Historic Men’s/Women’s Doubleheader UT’s meteoric rise in prominence under coach Bruce Pearl continues this season, as ESPN announced in August that the Volunteers will be featured in one of its popular College GameDay Driven by State Farm® matchups for the fourth straight season ... This season’s GameDay broadcast will precede the franchise’s first-ever same-school doubleheader ... The Vols host the Commodores Jan. 15 at noon ET, and then the Lady Vols will play Vanderbilt at 8 p.m. ET ... This marks the second time in three years that College GameDay will broadcast live from Thompson-Boling Arena ... And with North Carolina and UCLA not taking part in GameDay matchups this season, Tennessee now owns the nation’s longest active streak of GameDay appearances (four).

OUTLIVE: Round 3 The Tennessee basketball program’s OUTLIVE initiative has raised close to $255,000 for cancer research and prevention education since its inception during the 2008-09 season ... So far, OUTLIVE has helped the UT Medical Center Cancer Institute provide more than 23,000 cancer screenings throughout East Tennessee .... The highly successful OUTLIVE initiative was the idea of former graduate manager Brooks Savage (now a full-time hoops staffer at Tulane), who was inspired to action after witnessing the impact cancer had on the UT basketball team (Bruce Pearl’s mother is a cancer survivor; former Vol Chris Lofton quietly and courageously underwent treatment for testicular cancer during his senior season in 2007-08) ... Bruce and Brandy Pearl have a goal to help raise $1 million for the OUTLIVE program over five years, and the couple is hosting an “Evening In Orange” fundraising event in April that is expected to raise more than $1 million in just that one night alone ... Much of those proceeds will go toward the expansion, renovation and construction of the facilities at the UTMC Cancer Institute ... Tennessee throttled Florida 79-63 in the inaugural OUTLIVE game in January 2009 before shocking second-ranked Kentucky 74-65 in last season’s OUTLIVE contest in February ... This season’s OUTLIVE game is the Feb. 19 clash with Georgia.

Vols Taking The Court In New, State-Of-The-Art adidas Uniforms This Season Tennessee is one of 11 programs this season that is unveiling the lightest and most technologically advanced college basketball uniforms ever ... Designed and developed by adidas, the uniforms are 30 percent lighter and dry twice as fast as previous uniforms to help enhance the Vols’ performance by keeping players cooler, drier and more comfortable on the court ... Made from 60 percent recycled materials, the uniforms feature adidas’ Formotion technology, which reduces seams, decreases friction between the garment and the player’s skin and optimizes the player’s natural movement through specially constructed material ... adidas reduced uniform weight and increased player comfort by switching front and back numbers from heavier, dense materials to a more breathable mesh ... The jersey moves heat and sweat away from the body through a combination of moisture management materials, ventilation channels and three dimensional garments, helping the uniform dry twice as quickly ... All 30 NBA teams also will wear Revolution 30 jerseys this season featuring similar adidas technology. Vols Part Of Loaded 2011 Maui Field The Vols will make their second appearance at the EA Sports Maui Invitational next season ... Along with the perennial tournament host school, Chaminade, the 2011 field includes Duke, Georgetown, Kansas, Memphis, Michigan, Tennessee and UCLA ... Four newly-added Division I mainland tournament teams will be announced at a later date ... The Vols previously competed in the Maui Invitational in 2004, finishing fourth ... And as an assistant coach at Iowa, Bruce Pearl helped lead the Hawkeyes to the 1987 Maui title, with wins over Stanford, Kansas and Villanova. Tennessee Earns Fifth-Straight 20-Win Season Last season, Bruce Pearl’s Volunteers logged 20 wins for the fifth time in his five-year tenure on Rocky Top ... Tennessee now has 23 all-time 20-win seasons to date ... In 18 full seasons as a college head coach, Pearl has now led his team to at least 20 wins 17 times ... That’s darn good.

Legends In The Rafters Four Tennessee basketball legends are memorialized with banners in the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters ... During a halftime ceremony on March 1, 2006, banners honoring longtime head coach Ray Mears (1962-77) and beloved radio “Voice of the Vols” John Ward (1964-99) were unveiled ... The UT men’s basketball program had never retired a jersey prior to the 2006-07 season, but after nearly 100 years of hardwood history, Bernard King (1975-77) was the first player to earn that distinguished honor ... King’s No. 53 jersey was officially retired during a halftime ceremony at the Feb. 13, 2007, home game against Kentucky (UT won 89-85) ... Then on March 2, 2008, Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) became the second UT player to receive the ultimate honor, when his No. 22 jersey was unveiled in the rafters during halftime of Tennessee’s 63-60 victory over Kentucky.
Tennessee Stands Alone Tennessee is the only Division I school ever to rank in the top five nationally in attendance for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball in the same year ... UT accomplished that feat for the seventh time in 2009-10.
Unbelievable Increase In Attendance Tennessee’s average home attendance has increased by 6,943 fans per game since Bruce Pearl’s arrival on Rocky Top ... Tennessee’s increase in attendance is higher than the average attendance of more than 200 Division I programs, including teams from the SEC, ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac 10, C-USA, WAC, Mountain West and Missouri Valley conferences ... Tennessee ranked fifth nationally home attendance in Pearl’s first year at UT and has ranked fourth each year since.
Home Crowds of 20,000 Nothing New For Vols Tennessee has played in front of 41 home crowds of 20,000 or larger during the Bruce Pearl era ... The crowd of 22,326 for the 2009 Gonzaga game marked the largest at ThompsonBoling Arena since capacity was reduced from 24,535 to 21,678 prior to the 2007-08 season ... The Vols drew 20,613 fans for their season-opening win against Chattanooga Nov. 12.
Tennessee Fourth In The Nation In Attendance For Fourth Straight Year Tennessee finished last season ranked fourth nationally in average home attendance for the fourth consecutive year ... The Vols have finished in the top five nationally for five straight years ... Below is a look at 2009-10’s attendance leaders: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

The Volunteers At Thompson-Boling Arena Thompson-Boling Arena is hosting its 24th season in 2010-11 ... The Vols have won nearly 75 percent of their games in Thompson-Boling Arena and have ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance 11 times, including an active streak of five consecutive seasons in which UT has ranked in the top five. • Tennessee is 274-93 (.747) in 23 seasons in Thompson-Boling Arena. • Since the 1998 season, the Vols are 174-34 (.837) in Thompson-Boling Arena. • The Vols are 80-24 against SEC teams at home over the last 11 seasons. • Tennessee has won 27 of its last 31 SEC games at Thompson-Boling Arena. • UT has won 101 of its last 111 home games against non-conference opponents. • UT is 40-3 in home games against non-conference opponents under Bruce Pearl. • Tennessee finished both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons with a 16-0 home record. • This is the third straight season in which Sporting News has tabbed Thompson-Boling Arena the “best homecourt advantage” in the Southeastern Conference.
Vols Look To Build New Home Win Streak The Vols are looking to build a new home win streak after a Dec. 14 loss to Oakland ... After posting backto-back 16-0 home records in 2006-07 and 2007-08, the Vols turned in an uncharacteristic 10-5 mark at Thompson-Boling Arena in 2008-09 before going 15-1 last year ... Now in his sixth season at UT, Bruce Pearl is 74-8 at Thompson-Boling Arena. Season-Ticket Sales Strong Again Tennessee has sold 14,800 season tickets thus far, with the only available season-ticket packages remaining located in the arena’s upper level, mostly above Row 10 ... Last year’s season-ticket sales topped out at 15,100 (the second consecutive year the Vols sold more than 15,000). Vols Enjoying World-Class Facilities The University of Tennessee invested more than $35 million into its basketball facilities between the end of the 2006-07 campaign and the start of 200708 ... During that eight-month period, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena ... The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million centerhung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities ... The renovations took Thompson-Boling’s capacity down from 24,535 to 21,678 ... The Vols’ new state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room ... Prior to last season, a pedestrian bridge was constructed leading from the G-10 parking garage to the arena, an elevator was added at the arena’s northwest end as a customer service amenity and new exterior signage was installed on the building’s facade ... The UT athletics department is now renovating the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena in, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs. Vols Among Nation’s “Most Valuable” Programs In the spring of 2010, the Tennessee men’s basketball program was included on Forbes.com’s list of the 20 “most valuable” college basketball programs in the country ... The figures showed UT hoops with a value of $14.1 million and a profit of $8.6 million in 2009-10.
